We study the stellar populations of the brightest group galaxies (BGGs) in groups whose halos have different dynamical states, using observational data from the GAMA survey. The two independent indicators to probe the dynamical state of the halo are the magnitude gap between two most luminous galaxies (∆M12) and offset between BGG and the luminosity center (Doffset) of the group. Such indicators complement each other in identifying relaxed and unrelaxed galaxy groups in our samples. We find that the BGGs of unrelaxed groups have significantly bluer NUV-r colours than in relaxed groups. This is also true at fixed sersic index. We find the bluer colours cannot be explained away by differing dust fraction, suggesting there are real differences in their stellar populations. SFRs derived from SED-fitting tend to be higher in unrelaxed systems. This could be partly because there is a greater fraction of BGGs with non-elliptical morphology, but also because unrelaxed systems are expected to have larger numbers of mergers, some of which may bring fuel for star formation. The SED-fitted stellar metallicities of BGGs in unrelaxed systems also tend to be higher, perhaps because the building blocks of the unrelaxed systems were more massive and had more time to enrich themselves. We find that the ∆M12 parameter is the most important parameter behind the observed differences in the relaxed/unrelaxed groups. We also find that groups selected to be unrelaxed using our criteria tend to have higher velocity offsets between the BGG and their group.

In VLBI(Very Long Baseline Interferometry), the observed data created in many observatories which are far away from each other should be collected in correlation center for data analysis. Traditionally, observed data is moved by transportation such as car or airplane. But it is replaced with data transfer over the network rapidly as the advancement of information technology, and therefore, international cooperative research is also now more widely expanding. e-KVN(electronic Korean VLBI Network) has been upgraded two times so the network interface of KVN has been evolved to the highest specification of 100GbE. During this time period, the portion of network usage for VLBI observations and experiments in KVN has been increased exponentially. In this paper, we describe KVN VLBI system and network technology for the performance upgrade and advanced status monitoring between three radio astronomy observatories and Daejeon correlation center with KREONET(Korea Research Environment Open NETwork). Furthermore, future plan of e-KVN for the implementation of wide band VLBI observation will be also briefly discussed.
We present the results of simultaneous observations of SiO v = 1, 2, J = 1-0, $^{29}SiO$ v = 0, J = 1-0, and $H_2O$$6_{16}-5_{23}$ maser lines toward 152 known $H_2O$-only maser sources (the sources which are previously detected only in the 22 GHz $H_2O$ maser emission) using Yonsei and Tamna 21-m radio telescopes of the Korean VLBI Network from 2009 June to 2011 January. Both SiO and $H_2O$ maser emission were detected from 62 sources giving a detection rate of 40.8 %. SiO-only maser emission was detected from 27 sources, while $H_2O$-only maser was detected from 22 sources. We have identified 19 new detections of SiO maser emission for previous non-detection sources and 51 new detections of SiO maser for previously not observed sources. Characteristics of all observed sources in the IRAS two-color diagram is investigated including their evolutionary sequence and mutual relations between SiO and $H_2O$ maser emission. These observational results will be useful for statistical study of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and future VLBI observation.

We present the preliminary results of CO outflow survey toward the 56 Very Low Luminosity Object (VeLLO) candidates at CO J=2-1 and J=3-2 transitions with two radio telescopes of the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) and the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE). The survey is aimed to understand the origin of the formation of low-mass stars or substellar objects. The VeLLO is a very faint (${\leq}0.1$$L_{\odot}$) object deeply embedded in dense molecular clouds and believed to be a proto-brown dwarf which will be a brown dwarf or a faint protostar which has just formed with little mass accretion or which is in quiescent stage of episodic accretion. The candidates were searched for over all nearby ($d{\leq}450$ pc) Gould belt clouds and listed in a new catalogue of the VeLLO candidates by Kim et al. (2014 submitted). To diagnose present status and future fate of the VeLLOs, we conducted a systematic observation for the CO molecular outflows of the 56 VeLLOs to infer how accretion is being made around the VeLLOs. We found 17 VeLLO candidates either having a prominent wing in line profiles or showing bipolar intensity distribution of high velocity components. We will discuss the physical properties of these CO outflows and the identity of the VeLLO candidates.
FLASH is a blind neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption line survey, eventually targeting about 100,000 background radio continuum sources in the entire southern sky using the full 36-antenna of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Our primary goal is to search for associated and intervening HI absorption lines in the intermediate redshift range 0.4 < z < 1.0. The survey aims to understand the evolution of HI gas in galaxies as well as various physical mechanisms in active galactic nuclei, such as accretion and feedback processes. In this poster, we give an overview of the FLASH survey and present the preliminary results from our first 100-hrs of pilot observations. The latest survey data covers 1,000 square degrees and is ideal for validating observation and data processing in the continuous 300MHz-width low frequency ASKAP band (700-1000MHz). One of the crucial objectives of the pilot survey is to establish the analysis methodology that will be applied to upcoming large absorption surveys in the future. We discuss our data quality validation and present some detections of associated/intervening HI absorption lines. These absorption lines allow us to trace the cold gas properties of active and normal galaxies at higher redshifts where the HI emission line is too weak to be detectable.
Interstellar cabon monoxide and its isotopes were observed with the 13.7m radio telescope of the Daeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory toward Orion Molecular Cloud-1 (OMC-1). We derive the excitation temperature, optical depth, column density, and isotopic abundance ratios from the observed lines of $^{12}CO,^{13}CO,\;and\;C^{18}O$ inside of the region of $11'{\times}11'$. The optical depths of $^{13}CO$ were obtained to be 0.1~0.4, while those of $C^{18}O$ to be 0.01~0.03. The isotopic ratios $^{12}C/^{13}C$ were also estimated to be 2~60. We could not find the radial isotopic ratio $^{12}C/^{13}C$ gradient in the OMC-1.

We have developed an algorithm for tracking coronal mass ejection (CME) propagation that allows us to estimate CME speed and its arrival time at Earth. The algorithm may be used either to forecast the CME's arrival on the day of the forecast or to update the CME tracking information for the next day's forecast. In our case study, we successfully tracked CME propagation using the algorithm based on g-values of interplanetary scintillation (IPS) observation provided by the Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research (ISEE). We were able to forecast the arrival time (Δt = 0.30 h) and speed (Δv = 20 km/s) of a CME event on October 2, 2000. From the CME-interplanetary CME (ICME) pairs provided by Cane & Richardson (2003), we selected 50 events to evaluate the algorithm's forecast capability. Average errors for arrival time and speed were 11.14 h and 310 km/s, respectively. Results demonstrated that g-values obtained continuously from any single station observation were able to be used as a proxy for CME speed. Therefore, our algorithm may give stable daily forecasts of CME position and speed during propagation in the region of 0.2-1 AU using the IPS g-values, even if IPS velocity observations are insufficient. We expect that this algorithm may be widely accepted for use in space weather forecasting in the near future.
This paper presents the results of one of early sciences with Korean VLBI Network (KVN): a large fringe survey of compact radio sources at 43GHz. We established the catalog of correlated flux densities in three ranges of baseline projection lengths of 637 sources from a 43 GHz (Q-band) survey observed with the Korean VLBI Network. Of them, 623 sources have not been observed before at Q-band with VLBI. The goal of this work in the early science phase of the new VLBI array is twofold: to evaluate the performance of the new instrument that operates in a frequency range of 22--129 GHz and to build a list of objects that can be used as targets and as calibrators. We have observed the list of 799 target sources with declinations down to $-40{\circ}$. Among them, 724 were observed before with VLBI at 22 GHz and had correlated flux densities greater than 200 mJy. The overall detection rate is 78%. The detection limit, defined as the minimum flux density for a source to be detected with 90% probability in a single observation, was in a range of 115--180 mJy depending on declination. However, some sources as weak as 70 mJy have been detected. Of 623 detected sources, 33 objects are detected for the first time in VLBI mode. We determined their coordinates with the median formal uncertainty 20 mas. The results of this work set the basis for future efforts to build the complete flux-limited sample of extragalactic sources at frequencies 22 GHz and higher at 3/4 of the celestial sphere.

In the field of VLBI, If the quality of the connected network between the VLBI station and the correlation center is ensured, the existing inefficiency of repeatedly storing the observation data in each station and the correlation center can be overcome. In other words, the data center can be unified with the correlation center where data analysis is performed, which can improve data processing speed and productivity. In this paper, we design a massive VLBI data system that directly transmits and stores the observation data stream obtained from the VLBI station to the correlation center via the high - speed network KREONET. Based on this system, VLBI test observations confirmed that the observation data was stored perfectly in the recording system of the correlation center without a single packet loss.
The Korean VLBI Network (KVN) will open a new field of research in astronomy, geodesy and earth science using the newest three Elm radio telescopes. This will expand our ability to look at the Universe in the millimeter regime. Imaging capability of radio interferometry is highly dependent upon the antenna configuration, source size, declination and the shape of target. In this paper, imaging simulations are carried out with the KVN system configuration. Five test images were used which were a point source, multi-point sources, a uniform sphere with two different sizes compared to the synthesis beam of the KVN and a Very Large Array (VLA) image of Cygnus A. The declination for the full time simulation was set as +60 degrees and the observation time range was -6 to +6 hours around transit. Simulations have been done at 22GHz, one of the KVN observation frequency. All these simulations and data reductions have been run with the Astronomical Image Processing System (AIPS) software package. As the KVN array has a resolution of about 6 mas (milli arcsecond) at 220Hz, in case of model source being approximately the beam size or smaller, the ratio of peak intensity over RMS shows about 10000:1 and 5000:1. The other case in which model source is larger than the beam size, this ratio shows very low range of about 115:1 and 34:1. This is due to the lack of short baselines and the small number of antenna. We compare the coordinates of the model images with those of the cleaned images. The result shows mostly perfect correspondence except in the case of the 12mas uniform sphere. Therefore, the main astronomical targets for the KVN will be the compact sources and the KVN will have an excellent performance in the astrometry for these sources.
