  • In order to evaluate the performance of fire-fighting agents used to protect structures from heat and fire damages, the thermal characteristics of fire-protection foams are experimentally investigated. The current research focuses on the destruction of a fire-fighting foam subjected to heat radiation. A simple repeatable test for fire-protection foams subjected to fire radiation is developed. This test involves foam generation equipment, a fire source for heat generation, repeatable test procedures, and data acquisition techniques. Results of the experimental procedure indicated that each thermocouple within the foam responded in a similar manner and gradually to a temperature of $15^{\circ}C{\sim}20^{\circ}C$. At this point, each trace generally rises to a temperature of approximately $90^{\circ}C$. The temperature gradient in the foam as time passes increases with increased foam expansion ratio. In addition, it is determined that the temperature gradient along the foam for depth decreases with increased foam expansion ratio.

  • This paper investigates the second-grade fluid between two parallel plates. Fluid is produced due to stretching. Convective heat and mass transfer features are elaborated with thermal and solutal stratification. Thermal radiation and chemical reactions are also assumed in heat and mass transport processes partial differential. Formulated non-linear partial differential equations are transformed into non-linear ordinary differential equations by utilizing the suitable transformation. Convergent series solutions are computed via Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM). Effects of Hartman number, temperature field, velocity distribution and Prandtl number are sketched and analyzed through graphs. It is noticed that velocity field first decreases and after some distance it shows increasing behavior by the increment.

  • The interaction of forced convection-conduction with thermal radiation in laminar boundary layer over a plate fin is studied numerically. The analysis is based on complete solution whereby the heat conduction equation for the fin is solved simultaneously with the conservation equations for mass, momentum and energy in the fluid boundary layer adjacent to the fin. The fluid is a gray medium and diffusion(Rosseland) approximation is used to describe the radiative heat flux in the energy equation. The resulting boundary value problem are convection-conduction parameter N$_{c}$ and radiation-conduction parameter m, Prandtl number Pr. Numerical results are presented for gases with the Prandtl numbers of 0.7 & 5 with values of N$_{c}$ and M ranging from 0 to 10 respectively. The object of this study is to provide the first results on forced convection-radiation interaction in boundary layer flow over a semi-infinite flay plate which can be used for comparisons with future studies that will consider a more accurate expression for the radiative heat flux. The agreement of the results from the complete solution presented by E. M. Sparrow and those from this paper for the special case of M=0 is good. The overall rate of heat transfer from the fin considering radiative effect is higher than that from the fin neglecting radiative effect. The local heat transfer coefficient with radiative effect is higher than that without radiative effect. In the direction from tip to base, those coefficients decrease at first, attain minimum, and then increase. The larger values of N$_{c}$ M, Pr give rise to larger fin temperature variations and the fin temperature without radiative effect is always higher than that with radiative effect.

  • Natural convection and radiation heat transfer in a square enclosure containing absorbing, emitting, and isotopically scattering(participating) media is studied numerically using the finite volume method. Various numerical methods are employed to analyze the radiative heat transfer. However, it is very difficult to choose the proper method. In present study, a finite volume method(FVM) and a discrete ordinates method(DOM) are compared in rectangular enclosure. The SIMPLER algorithm is used to solve the momentum and energy equations. Thermal and flow characteristics are investigated according to the variation of radiation parameters such as optical thickness and scattering albedo. The result shows that the accuracy and the computing time of FVM are better than those of DOM in regular geometry.

  • This work investigates the transient cooling characteristics of an Infrared (IR) detector cryochamber, which has a critical effect on the cooling load. The current thermal modeling considers the conduction heat transfer through a cold well. the gaseous conduction due to outgassing. and the radiation heat transfer. The transient cooling Performance. i.e. the penetration depth and cooling load, is determined using a finite difference method. It is found that the penetration depth increases as the bore conductivity increases. Gaseous conduction and radiation hardly affect the penetration depth. The transient cooling load increases as the bore conductivity increases. The effects of gaseous conduction and radiation on transient heat transfer are weak at initial stages of cooling. However, their effects become significant as the cooling Process Proceeds.

  • For this purpose, the authors proposed and proved usefulness of the modified mean skin temperature which is integrated mean radiation temperature and the effect of floor contacted heat conduction. The mean radiation temperature is applied form factor between half cross-legged human body and surrounding wall of indoor. In addition the floor contacted heat conduction is applied heat transfer coefficient of half cross-legged human body. Eight Korean young men were targeted for the experiment. From the experiment the authors excerpted physiological reaction and psychological reaction in Ondol environment which is combined physiccal environmental factor of artificial climate chamber, air and floor temperature. As a result of the experiment it is confirmed that heat conduction has more impact than heat exchange from existing research for the heat exchange between half cross-legged human body and surrounding wall in Ondol thermal environment. Thereby, it is proved the effectiveness of the modified mean skin temperature which is added floor contacted temperature to the Ondol thermal environmental evaluation index.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to evaluate the effects of $CO_{2}$ on heat transfer from hydrogen oxygen-enriched flame. Experiments were performed on flames stabilized by a co-flow swirl burner, which mounted on top of the furnace. Five composition conditions of oxidizer were chosen with replacing $N_{2}$ with $CO_{2}$. In a steady state, total and radiative heat flux rates from the flame to the wall of furnace has been measured using heat flux meters. Temperature distribution in furnace also has been checked. Increasing $CO_{2}$ ratio in the oxidizer, the dominant heat transfer mode was changed into convection from radiation. Temperature in the furnace decreased but total heat flux increased.

  • This study is investigated numerically on the heat transfer characteristics of surface radiation-natural convection interactions in a two dimensional enclosure assumed Ondol cavity. Mean Nusselt number of the bottom surface with surface radiation is increased by increasing wall emissivity and by decreasing dimensionless thickness of adiabatic wall. and is greater than that without radiation. Mean Nusselt number of the bottom surface for convection only with surface radiation is slightly smaller than that without surface radiation with decrease dimensionless thickness of adiabatic wall.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the combined effect of heating and gamma irradiation on the shelf-stability and quality of kimchi during storage at $35^{\circ}C$. The optimum condition for heat treatment of kimchi was considered at $60^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Irradiation after kent treatment was effective to inhibit the growth of microorganisms and prevent the quality change of kimchi during storage. In particular, microorganisms of kimchi co-treated with heat and 20 kGy-irradiation were not detected and sensory scores of that were the highest after storage at $35^{\circ}C$ for 14 days. Therefore, combination treatment of heat and irradiation was considered as the effective method to improve the shelf-stability of kimchi in the accelerated condition.
