  • Criticality alarm systems (CASs) are mandatory in nuclear plants for prompt alarm in the event of any criticality incident. False criticality alarms are not desirable as they create a panic environment for radiation workers. The present article describes the design enhancement of the CAS at each stage and provides maximum availability, preventing false criticality alarms. The failure mode and effect analysis are carried out on each element of a CAS. Based on the analysis, additional hardware circuits are developed for early fault detection. Two different methods are developed, one method for channel loop functionality test and another method for dose alarm test using electronic transient pulse. The design enhancement made for the external systems that are integrated with a CAS includes the power supply, criticality evacuation hooter circuit, radiation data acquisition system along with selection of different soft alarm set points, and centralized electronic test facility. The CAS incorporating all improvements are assembled, installed, tested, and validated along with rigorous surveillance procedures in a nuclear plant for a period of 18,000 h.

  • In this study, we studied the effect of $Co^{60}$ gamma-radiation on the FBGs written in photo-sensitive and commercial Ge-doped single-mode optical fibers. The FBGs were exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of 17.8 kGy at the dose rate of 300 Gy/min. According to the experimental data and analysis results, the lowest Bragg wavelength shift (18 pm) was obtained by a grating written in photosensitive fiber without $H_2$-loading.

  • In order to compute the radiated sound from a vibrating structure, the Rayleigh's integral equation has to be derived from the Helmholtz equation using Green's function. Generally, the surface velocity in the Rayleigh's integral equation uses the root mean square(rms) velocity. The calculation value is too large, because it's not considered cancelation. On the other hand. using the complex velocity, the sound pressure is calculated too small, because it considers that sound is perfectly canceled out. Therefore, this thesis proposes a correction factor(CF) which considers vibration modes and the method by which to calculate the radiating sound pressure. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental values, and the proposed method can be verified with confluence.

  • The theory of characteristic modes for coaxial waveguide with periodic axial slots is used to derive the weighted eigenvalue equation for calculating the characteristic values and the characteristic currents. Once the characteristic values and the characteristic currents are obtained, the important quantities such as the equivalent magnetic current, radiation patterns, and RCS are determined. Numerical results of the equivalent magnetic currents, radiation patterns, and RCS are compared with those obtained by use of the method of moments. A fairly good correspondence is observed between them.

  • Instrumentation radar in a test range has an important role to measure target's TSPI(time, space, position, information). It is well known that it tracks a target stably using a beacon mode. But it may fail to track a target in a certain region using a beacon mode. In this paper, we modeled a simple missile shape similar to ATCMS with two beacon antenna and analyzed an antenna radiation pattern using MLFMM(Multi Level Fast Multipole Method) method. Using the analyzed result of the radiation pattern of the antenna and the attitude data of target, we simulated beacon tracking performance of an instrumentation radar. As a result of simulation, we showed that an instrumentation radar may lose the target because it tracks a area of the beacon antenna pattern.

  • The characteristics of the unstable impinging circular jet were investigated based on the frequency characteristics and the sound field of the impinging-tones. Two symmetric modes Si and S2, associated with low frequency and high frequency respectively, and one helical mode H have been observed by measuring frequency and phase-distribution around the jet. Radiation characteristics of impinging-tone were studied by measuring axial directivity. It was founded that the radiation patterns of symmetric and helical mode are different and it is toward the plate as the impinging distance increased. By estimating the convection velocity of the unstable jet, it was founded that the convection speed decreases with the frequency and its decreasing pattern varies with unstable modes S1, S2 and H, respectively.

  • The radiation characteristics of leaky antenna from the dielectric-coated conducting cylinder with periodic corrugation are investigated theoretically for the infinite and finite periodic structures. For the infinite periodic structure, mode-matching method is applied. The integral equation is derived for the finite periodic structure by use of the Fourier transform and mode expansion and a simultaneous linear equation is obtained. The influences of the corrugation slot width, corrugation depth, dielectric thickness, cylinder radius, and finite corrugation number on the radiation characteristics (leakage constant, phase constant, and radiation pattern) are investigated. The results of the finite periodic corrugations are compared with those of the infinite extent structure and good agreement is found. To reduce high side lobe levels of the uniform finite periodic structure, tapering process on the beginning and end section of antenna and nonuniform quasi-period slot arrays are considered. Especially, for the corrugation period, width and depth used for a corrugated surface wave antenna, through the proper tapering process, end-fire radiation pattern with reduced side lobe levels is given.

  • A dual-mode annular ring antenna for both global positioning system(GPS) and satellite digital multimedia broad-casting(DMB) is designed. The proposed antenna consists of a coupling feed line and four slots on the annular ring patch. The gap between the feed line and the annular ring patch is used for an input impedance matching, and the slot length is used for adjusting the resonant frequency of the $TM_{21}$ mode at the DMB frequency. The antenna was fabricated and measured. The experimental results show that the antenna resonants at the GPS and DMB frequencies with suitable bandwidths, and had a broadside radiation pattern at the GPS band and a conical beam radiation pattern at the DMB band.

  • The effective dose and the organ absorbed dose, which are given to a breast in the cases of using and not using the bismuth breast protection shield for the protection of a breast with the coronary artery CT angiography, have been measured and compared for the manual exposure control (MEC)and the automatic exposure control (AEC). In the cases of using and not using the bismuth breast protection shield, it has been found that the measured dose shows the reduction of about 23 to 26% for the MEC and about 22 to 25% for the AEC when the shield is used compared to the case of not using it. By comparing the shield and non-shield cases for the AEC and the MEC, it can be said that the value measured by carrying out the scanning process with the AEC mode has decreased by about 24 to 30% compared to the case of applying the MEC mode. Such a result shows that it is recommended to use the AEC mode for the reduction of the patient's exposure dose during the CT examination.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of the horn antenna for the high power transfertation system is stuided and several kinds of a horn antenna are compared and finally a conical hem antenna using multi-mode is proposed. In the high power system, the efficiency of power transfer is very important. Therefore the feeding hem of a reflector must have a circular symmetric radiation pattern. And the side lobe must be suppressed to reduce a spillover power loss and interference. By using multi-mode in a circular hem antenna, the whole length can be shorter and the radiation pattern can be adjusted according to the shape and direction of a reflector. This is confirmed by the experiments.
