  • Valence band photoemission spectroscopy (PES) measurements have been performed for $Co_{x}Pd_{100-x}$ alloy films using synchrotron radiation (x = 0, 25, 40, 65). Then the partial spectral weight distributions (PSW's) of Co 3d and Pd 4d electrons have been determined. The Co 3d PSW's exhibit some structures which are quite different from those of the Co film for x < 25 %, whereas they become very similar to those of the Co film for x > 40 %. For x < 25 %, the peak near the Fermi level ($E_F$) and a shoulder around 2 eV binding energy in the Co 3d PSW reflect large hybridization between Pd 4d and Co 3d electrons, suggesting that the hybridization might play an inportant role in determining perpendicualr magnetic anisotropy. The Pd 4d PSW's in Co-Pd alloy films are found to have larger FWHM's (full widths at half maximum), larger binding energies of the main peaks, and larger spectral intensities at $E_F$ than the PES spectrum of the Pd film. The FWHM of the Pd 4d PSW increases with decreasing Pd concentration, which are considered to reflect the disordering effect in the alloy formation or the change in the Pd 4d electronic structure due to hybridization between Co 3d and Pd 4d electrons.

  • Multistep detection was peformed to identify irradiated dried anchovy. In thermoluminescence (TL) analysis, non-irradiated samples represented a lower peak at about 28$0^{\circ}C$, but irradiated samples showed a higher peak at around 20$0^{\circ}C$. The normalization with a re-irradiation step at 1 kGy could verify the identification results. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy for bones separated from irradiated anchovy revealed specific signals (g=2.002,1.998) derived from a hydroxyapatite radical, which intensities were in proportion to the irradiation doses and still detectable even after 6 months of storage at -2$0^{\circ}C$. Six kinds of hydrocarbons (HC) were observed in dried anchovy samples and 1,7-hexadecadiene and 1-hexadecene were only detected in irradiated anchovy at 1 kGy or more. Also among 3 kinds of radiation-induced 2-alkylcyclobutanones (2-ACB) observed, 2-dodecylcy-clobutanone and 2-tetradecylcyclobutanone were unique in irradiated anchovy. As a result, the concentration of radiation-induced HCs and 2-ACBs were dependent on the irradiation dose and detectable after 6 months of storage. However, TL and ESR analyses were found simpler than the other methods for identification of irradiated boiled-dried anchovy.

  • The Reg. Guide 1.109 model was reviewed against its applicability to calculating radionuclide concentrations in agricultural products for operating nuclear facilities and an improved method was proposed. The model was so modified that the radionuclides deposited since the start of operation could be considered in assessing the root uptake. Translocation factors were introduced in the equation for calculating the concentrations in edible parts due to direct plant deposition. Values specific to Korea were set up for the input parameters of the modified model. The concentrations of $^{54}Mn,\;^{60}Co,\;^{90}Sr\;and\;^{137}Cs$ in rice seeds, Chinese cabbage and radish root were calculated for various hypothetical deposition histories using the Reg. Guide 1.109 model and the modified model with parameter values in the guide and those specific to Korea put in alternately. Through comparisons among the results, it could be expected that the use of the modified model with the input of parameter values specific to Korea would result In a more resonable and realistic assessment.

  • To investigate the effects of internal radiation of various intensityon the test crop(flax), seeds of four levels of activity($15.5{\times}10-4 $\mu$c/grain, 9.0{\times}10-2$\mu$c/grain, 2.2{\times}100$\mu$c/grain and 3.8{\times}10-1$\mu$c/grain)$ which had been obtained by immersing them into various concentrations of P-32 original solution (total activity: 90 mc, To: 3/21) for 24 hours at room temperature, were germinated, transplanted later into pots, and the rate of germination and the successive growth were observed, and the inorganic conents of the plant top were analyzed. The results are as follows: 1. At the early stage of germination, the plants manifested themselves both inhibitory and promotive effects at higher and lower activity levels respectively, compared those of the control. These difference of growth on account of different levels of activity appeared, however, to be gradually narrowed in the course of time after germination, except at the highest activity. 2. Two weeks after transplanting, the plants of the lowest activity showed more vigorous growth than those of control. The plants belonging to the other activity levels on the other hand, tended to be less growing, the higher the activity. However, this growth gap between treatments seemed to be progressively closed one month after transplanting. 3. Most of the leaves and stems of the plants belonging to the highest activity level ($3.8{\times}101$\mu$c/grain$) were withered during the early stage of growth, and this damage did not recover. 4. Practically no difference of growth was observed among treatments(excluding that of highest activity) one and half months after transplanting. 5. The fluorescence tended to be mroe delayed than the control, as the activity decreased. 6. There was a tendency that the number of pods harvested were larger in the plants treated with P-32 than that of the control. 7. The proportion of fiber in the plants at harvest appeared to be larger at lower activity and smaller at higher P-32 concentration than that of control. 8. As for the inorganic contents of the plant top harvested the floowing tendency was observed: (1) Nitrogen content was highest at the highest activity level at which the poorest growth ensued. (2) There was no clear difference of phosphorus content among treatments. (3) The contents of potassium and magnesium were higher than control at the medium levels of activity. (4) Calcium content of all treated blocks was found to be more than that of control.

  • The diffusion of Sr-85, Cs-137, Co-60 and Am-241 in compacted domestic bentonite was studied, using a diffusion cell unit in which diffusion took place axially from the center of cylindrical bentonite sample body. The effects of compaction density and heat-treated bentonite on diffusion were analysed. And the diffusion mechanism of radionuclide was also analysed by evaluating the measured diffusivity of anion Cl-36. The apparent diffusivities obtained for Sr-85, Cs-137, Co-60 and Am-241 were $l.07{\times}10^{-11},\;6.705{\times}10^{-13},\;l.226{\times}10^{-13}\;and\; l.310{\times}10^{-14}m^2/sec$, respectively. When the as-pressed density of bentonite increased from $1.8\;to\;2.0g/cm^3$, the apparent diffusivity of Cs-137 decreased by quarter. In the case of bentonite heat-treated to $150^{\circ}C$, no significant change in diffusivity was observed, which showed the possibility that the domestic bentonite could be used as a chemical barrier to retard the radionuclide migration at below $150^{\circ}C$. From the calculated pore and surface diffusivity, the surface diffusion due to the concentration gradient of radionuclide sorbed on the solid phase was found to dominate greatly in total transport process.

  • Background: Phosphate rock and its by-product are widely used in various industries to produce phosphoric acid, gypsum, gypsum board, and fertilizer. Owing to its high level of natural radioactive nuclides (e.g., $^{238}U$ and $^{226}Ra$), the radiological safety of workers who work with phosphate rock should be systematically managed. In this study, $^{238}U$, $^{232}Th$, $^{226}Ra$, and $^{40}K$ levels were measured to analyze the transport characteristics of these radionuclides in the production cycle of phosphate rock. Materials and Methods: Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence and gamma spectrometry were used to determine the activity of $^{238}U$, $^{232}Th$, $^{226}Ra$, and $^{40}K$. To evaluate the extent of secular disequilibrium, the analytical results were compared using statistical methods. Finally, the distribution of radioactivity across different stages of the phosphate rock production cycle was evaluated. Results and Discussion: The concentration ratios of $^{226}Ra$ and $^{238}U$ in phosphate rock were close to 1.0, while those found in gypsum and fertilizer were extremely different, reflecting disequilibrium after the chemical reaction process. The nuclide with the highest activity level in the production cycle of phosphate rock was $^{40}K$, and the median $^{40}K$ activity was $8.972Bq{\cdot}g^{-1}$ and $1.496Bq{\cdot}g^{-1}$, respectively. For the $^{238}U$ series, the activity of $^{238}U$ and $^{226}Ra$ was greatest in phosphate rock, and the distribution of activity values clearly showed the transport characteristics of the radionuclides, both for the byproducts of the decay sequences and for their final products. Conclusion: Although the activity of $^{40}K$ in k-related fertilizer was relatively high, it made a relatively low contribution to the total radiological effect. However, the activity levels of $^{226}Ra$ and $^{238}U$ in phosphate rock were found to be relatively high, near the upper end of the acceptable limits. Therefore, it is necessary to systematically manage the radiological safety of workers engaged in phosphate rock processing.

  • The hepatoprotective activity of flavonol glycosides rich fraction (F-2), prepared from 70% alcohol extract of the aerial parts of V calcarata Desf., was evaluated in a rat model with a liver injury induced by daily oral administration of $CCl_4$ (100 mg/kg, b.w) for four weeks. Treatment of the animals with F-2 using a dose of (25 mg/kg, b.w) during the induction of hepatic damage by $CCl_4$ significantly reduced the indices of liver injuries. The hepatoprotective effects of F-2 significantly reduced the elevated levels of the following serum enzymes: alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). The antioxidant activity of F-2 markedly ameliorated the antioxidant parameters including glutathione (GSH) content, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), plasma catalase (CAT) and packed erythrocytes glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) to be comparable with normal control levels. In addition, it normalized liver malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and creatinine concentration. Chromatographic purification of F-2 resulted in the isolation of two flavonol glycosides that rarely occur in the plant kingdom, identified as quercetin-3,5-di-O-$\beta$-D-diglucoside (5) and kaempferol-3,5-di-O-$\beta$-D-diglucoside (4) in addition to the three known compounds identified as quercetin-3-O-$\alpha$-L-rhamnosyl- (${\rightarrow}6$)-$\beta$-D-glucoside [rutin, 3], quercetin-3-O-$\beta$-D-glucoside [isoquercitrin, 2] and kaempferol-3-O-$\beta$-D-glucoside [astragalin, 1]. These compounds were identified based on interpretation of their physical, chemical, and spectral data. Moreover, the spectrophotometric estimation of the flavonoids content revealed that the aerial parts of the plant contain an appreciable amount of flavonoids (0.89%) calculated as rutin. The data obtained from this study revealed that the flavonol glycosides of F-2 protect the rat liver from hepatic damage induced by $CCl_4$ through inhibition of lipid peroxidation caused by $CCl_4$ reactive free radicals.

  • Ten commercially available red pepper powders were investigated using photostimulated-luminescence (PSL), thermoluminescence (TL) and electron spin resonance (ESR) analyses to confirm their irradiation status. The application of PSL, TL, and ESR analyses was also confirmed by in-house irradiation. In PSL-based screening, all samples gave negative photon counts (<700 PCs). The PSL calibration dose (1 kGy) showed a low sensitivity of 4 samples, while the others provided reliable screening results. TL glow curves demonstrated maximum peaks after $250^{\circ}C$ for the 6 samples; however 4 samples gave complex TL glow curves with maximum peaks in the range of $185-260^{\circ}C$ (radiation-specific), which could be the effect of an irradiated component in low concentration as the TL ratios of all samples were <0.1. Radiation-specific ESR features were absent in the all commercial samples. Variable irradiation detection properties were found; where the TL analysis showed the possible presence of an irradiated component in 4 samples requiring further monitoring and investigation.

  • Gamma irradiation was applied to develop fermented shrimp product with lower salt concentration, high sensory quality and storage stability. Shrimp was prepared with 15 and 20% of salt and fermented at $15^{\circ}C$. The sample was irradiated for 15% added salt at the 4th week and for 20% at the 6th week during fermentation with 0, 5 and 10 kGy absorbed doses. The irradiation was applied at optimum stage of fermentation determined when the content of amino nitrogen(AN) arrived approximately 400 mg%. Chemical properties such as amino nitrogen(AN), volatile base nitrogen(VBN), trimethylamine(TMA) and neutral protease activity were examined during whole fermentation. The AN, VBN, TMA and protease activity were not affected immediately after gamma irradiation. The more NaCl concentrations and irradiation dose, the less content of chemical compounds and protease activity was found. From the results of chemical properties, it was concluded that fermented shrimp with 15% of salt and irradiated at 10 kGy before optimum fermentation, or 20% and 5 kGy or above were maintained the sound quality during storage compared with the control.

  • Chitosan is a nontoxic natural chealtor which was made by chitin, and reduced a contamination of radiostrontium in animals. In this experiment, A different molecular weight of C-14 chitosan was intravenously administered to mice, and then the distribution of C-14 chitosan in the body was observed. Male mice (8 to 10 weeks, body weight of 30 to 35g) of ICR strain were used. C-14 chitosan was diluted with saline and then given intravenously in mice. After the administration of C-14 chitosan, mice was sacrificed at the 6th hour, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th day. Beta radioactivities in the blood, liver, kidney, liver, muscle, testis, and urine was measured using a liquid scintillation analyzer. Most of the C-14 chitosan was excreted through urine within 6 hours. Biodistribution of C-14 chitosan was similar despite the difference of moleclar weight. Higher distributions of radioactivities were found in the liver, kidney, spleen. The relative concentration in tissue increased for the 6 hours and then decreased. In conclusion, most of C-14 chitosan was excreted through urine despite the difference of molecular weight. and, low molecular weight of C-14 chitosan showed higher distribution than high molecular weight of C-14 chitosan in tissues.
