A local radial point interpolation method (LRPIM) based on local residual formulation is presented and applied to solid mechanics in this paper. In LRPIM, the trial function is constructed by the radial point interpolation method (PIM) and establishes discrete equations through a local residual formulation, which can be carried out nodes by nodes. Therefore, element connectivity for trial function and background mesh for integration is not necessary. Radial PIM is used for interpolation so that singularity in polynomial PIM may be avoided. Essential boundary conditions can be imposed by a straightforward and effective manner due to its Delta properties. Moreover, the approximation quality of the radial PIM is evaluated by the surface fitting of given functions. Numerical performance for this LRPIM method is further studied through several numerical examples of solid mechanics.
The theory for a new electromagnetically biased diskless combined radial and axial magnetic bearing is developed. A typical magnetic bearing system is composed of two radial magnetic bearings and an axial magnetic bearing. The axial magnetic bearing with a large axial disk usually limits rotor dynamic performance and makes assembling and disassembling difficult for maintenance work. This paper proposes a novel electromagnet biased integrated radial-axial magnetic bearing without axial disk. This integrated magnetic bearing uses two axial coils to provide the bias flux to the radial and axial air gaps of the combined bearing. The axial magnetic bearing unit in this combined magnetic bearing utilizes reluctance forces developed in the non-uniform air gaps such that the axial disk can be removed from the bearing unit. The 4-pole homopolar type radial magnetic bearing unit is also designed and analyzed. Three dimensional finite element model for the bearing is also developed and analyzed to illustrate the diskless combined magnetic bearing.
Background: Radial head arthroplasty allows a high degree of customizability, and implant polarity has emerged as an important variable. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to evaluate differences in functional and clinical outcomes between patients receiving monopolar and bipolar radial head prosthetic implants. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were employed, and 65 articles were identified in three databases. Twelve articles contained non-English or insufficient text and were consequently excluded, and 20 others did not contain sufficient data or follow-up. The remaining 33 articles were qualitatively and quantitatively reviewed. Results: In total, 33 populations were identified, with 809 unduplicated patients: 565 with monopolar and 244 with bipolar implants. In these respective patients, the mean follow-up was 40.2 and 56.9 months. Average Mayo Elbow Performance Score were 86.7 and 87.4 (P=0.80), respectively; average Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand scores were 17.9 and 14.7 (P=0.47), and average final flexion/extension arcs were 119.4° and 118.7° (P=0.48). Revision rates were 4.07% and 6.56%, while complication rates were 19.65% and 20.08% in the respective monopolar and bipolar patients. These increased relative risks associated with bipolar implants were not significant. Conclusions: Radial head implant polarity does not appear to affect functional outcomes. While bipolar prosthetic design may increase the risks of revision and complications, the increases were not significant. Level of evidence: IV.

Background: In elbow fracture-dislocation, partial excision of the comminuted radial head fracture that is not amenable to fixation remains controversial considering the accompanying symptoms. This study was undertaken to evaluate the results of radial head partial excision when the comminuted radial head fracture involved <50% of the articular surface in all-arthroscopic repair of elbow fracture-dislocation. Methods: Patients were divided into two groups based on the condition of the radial head fracture. In Group A, the patients had a radial head comminuted fracture involving <50% of the articular surface, and underwent arthroscopic partial excision. Group B was the non-excision group comprising patients with stable and non-displacement fractures. Follow-up consultations were conducted at 6 weeks and at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery. Results: In all, 19 patients (Group A: 11; Group B: 8) met the inclusion criteria and were enrolled in the study. At the final follow-up, all 19 patients showed complete resolution of elbow instability. No significant differences were observed in the range of motion, visual analogue scale score, and Mayo elbow performance score between groups. Radiological findings did not show any complications of the radiocapitellar joint. However, nonunion of the coracoid fracture was observed in 3 patients (Group A: 1; Group B: 2), without any accompanying instability and clinical symptoms. Conclusions: Considering that the final outcome is coronoid fracture fixation and lateral collateral ligament complex repair for restoring elbow stability, arthroscopic partial excision for radial head comminuted fractures involving <50% of articular surface is an effective and acceptable treatment for elbow fracture-dislocation.
Background: Climate change has altered the various ecosystem processes including forest ecosystem in Himalayan region. Although the high mountain natural forests including treelines in the Himalayan region are mainly reported to be temperature sensitive, the temperature-related water stress in an important growth-limiting factor for middle elevation mountains. And there are very few evidences on growth performance of planted forest in changing climate in the Himalayan region. A dendrochronological study was carried out to verify and record the impact of warming temperature tree growth by using the tree cores of Pinus roxburghii from Batase village of Dhulikhel in Central Nepal with sub-tropical climatic zone. For this total, 29 tree cores from 25 trees of P. roxburghii were measured and analyzed. Result: A 44-year long tree ring width chronology was constructed from the cores. The result showed that the radial growth of P. roxburghii was positively correlated with pre-monsoon (April) rainfall, although the correlation was not significant and negatively correlated with summer rainfall. The strongest negative correlation was found between radial growth and rainfall of June followed by the rainfall of January. Also, the radial growth showed significant positive correlation with that previous year August mean temperature and maximum temperature, and significant negative correlation between radial growth and maximum temperature (Tmax) of May and of spring season (March-May), indicating moisture as the key factor for radial growth. Despite the overall positive trend in the basal area increment (BAI), we have found the abrupt decline between 1995 and 2005 AD. Conclusion: The results indicated that chir pine planted population was moisture sensitive, and the negative impact of higher temperature during early growth season (March-May) was clearly seen on the radial growth. We emphasize that the forest would experience further moisture stress if the trend of warming temperatures continues. The unusual decreasing BAI trend might be associated with forest management processes including resin collection and other disturbances. Our results showed that the planted pine forest stand is sub-healthy due to major human intervention at times. Further exploration of growth climate response from different climatic zones and management regimes is important to improve our understanding on the growth performance of mid-hill pine forests in Nepal.
Dipole model based analytical expression is proposed to estimate the length and depth of the rectangular defect on ferromagnetic pipe. Among the three leakage profiles of Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL), radial and axial leakage profiles are considered in this work. Permeability variation of the specimen is ignored by considering the flux density as close to saturation level of the inspected specimen. Comparing the profile of both the components, radial leakage profile furnishes the better estimation of defect parameter. This is evident from the results of error percentage of length and depth of the defect. Normalized pattern of the proposed analytical model radial leakage profile is good agreement with the experimentally obtained profile support the performance of proposed expression.
A moving mesh system is one of the critical parts in a computational fluid dynamics analysis. In this study, the RBF(Radial Basis Function) which shows better performance than hybrid meshes was developed to obtain the deformed grid. The RBF method can handle large mesh deformations caused by translations, rotations and deformations, both for 2D and 3D meshes. Another advantage of the method is that it can handle both structured and unstructured grids with ease. The method uses a volume spline technique to compute the deformation of block vertices and block edges, and deformed shape.
In this paper, we proposed the method judging whether transmission system is radial system or loop system using simple set theory. And we proposed the method judging whether power device's operation causes of blackout or not. Using proposed method, we developed automatic judgement system of radial system for preventing power device's wrong control in SCADA. Finally, we simulated a variety of case study using SCADA simulator with developed system, and verified reliability of the result and performance of developed system.
A magnetically suspended robot joint is developed, which is free of dust and oil generation. Two radial bearings consisting of cone-shaped magnet cores control the rotor motion in the axial and radial directions. A linearized dynamic model is developed for active control of the magnetic bearing system. The control algorithm is constructed such that the axial displacement of the joint is controlled by radial control current to the pairs of facing radial bearings. The stability and control performance is tested through numerical simulation based on the nonlinear model. Experiments are also performed to verify the theoretical development.
