  • High speed brushless permanent magnet(PM) machines need a key technology to minimize the iron core losses in stator and the eddy current losses in the retained sleeve and magnets caused by slotting harmonics. Thus, slotless or iron-coreless brushless PM machines have been applied for a very high rotational speed and/or the ripple-free torque. Unfortunately, slotless or coreless PM machines have lower open-circuit field than slotted and/or iron-cored types, which cause to reduce power density. Fortunately, Halbach array can generate the strong magnetic field systems without additional magnetic materials. In this paper, the 4-pole Halbach array is applied to the high speed machine and is compared with the radial magnetized PM array in field system. The iron-/air-cored stator of PM machine is constructed with/without winding slots. Open circuit magnetic fields of each type are presented from the analytical method and finite element method. Consequently, it is confirmed that the Halbach array field system with slotless stator is more suitable to the high speed motor because it has high flux density, sinusoidal flux distribution than others.

  • In this study, Mooney-Rivlin 1st model and Mooney-Rivlin 3rd model are adopted as strain energy density functions of the rubber compounds of a radial tire. It is shown that the FE analysis using Mooney-Rivlin models for rubber compounds may provide good approximations by employing the appropriate strain range of experimental stress-strain data in a way to describe the stress-strain relationship accurately. Especially, Mooney-Rivlin 3rd model gives an accurate stress-strain relationship regardless of the fitting strain range used within the strain of 100%. The static nonlinear FE analysis of a tire inflation is performed by employing an axisymmetric model, which shows that the outside shapes of the tire before and after inflating the tire agree well with those of the real tire. Additionally, the deformations at crown center and turning point on sidewall, distribution of belt cord force, interlaminar shear strain are predicted in terms of variation of belt cord angle which is known as the most influential factor in inflation behavior of a tire.

  • The prediction and achievement of a proper rock fragmentation size is the main challenge of blasting operations in surface mines. This is because an optimum size distribution can optimize the overall mine/plant economics. To this end, this study attempts to develop four improved artificial intelligence models to predict rock fragmentation through cascaded forward neural network (CFNN) and radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) models. In this regards, the CFNN was trained by the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm (LMA) and Conjugate gradient backpropagation (CGP). Further, the RBFNN was optimized by the Dragonfly Algorithm (DA) and teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO). For developing the models, the database required was collected from the Midouk copper mine, Iran. After modeling, the statistical functions were computed to check the accuracy of the models, and the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of CFNN-LMA, CFNN-CGP, RBFNN-DA, and RBFNN-TLBO were obtained as 1.0656, 1.9698, 2.2235, and 1.6216, respectively. Accordingly, CFNN-LMA, with the lowest RMSE, was determined as the model with the best prediction results among the four examined in this study.

  • Ferromagnetic tunnel junctions were fabricated by dc magnetron sputtering and plasma oxidation process. The local transport properties of the ferromagnetic tunnel junctions were studied using contact-mode Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and the local current-voltage analysis. Tunnel junctions with the structure of sub./Ta/Cu/Ta/NiFe/Cu/Mn$\_$75/Ir$\_$25//Co$\_$70/Fe$\_$30//Al-oxide were prepared on thermally oxidized Si wafers. Al-oxide layers were formed with microwave excited plasma using radial line slot antenna (RLSA) for 5 and 7 sec. Kr gas was used as the inert gas mixed with $O_2$ gas for the plasma oxidization. No correlation between topography and current image was observed while they were measured simultaneously. The local current distribution was well identified with the distribution of local barrier height. Assuming the gaussian distribution of the local barrier height, the ferromagnetic tunnel junction with longer oxidation time was well fitted with the experimental results. As contrast, in the case of the shorter time oxidation junction, the current mainly flow through the low barrier height area for its insufficient oxygen. Such leakage current might result in the decrease of tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio.

  • Electron temperature, electron density and electron energy distribution function were measured in Radio-Frequency Inductively Coupled Plasma(RFICP) using a probe method. Measurements were conducted in argon discharge for pressure from 10 mTorr to 40 mTorr and input rF power from 100W to 600W and flow rate from 3 sccm to 12 sccm. Spatial distribution of electron temperature, electron density and electron energy distribution function were measured for discharge with same aspect ratio (R/L=2). Electron temperature was found to depend on pressure, but only weakly on power. Electron density and electron energy distribution function strongly depended on both pressure and power. Electron density and electron energy distribution function increased with increasing flow rate. Radial distribution of the electron density and electron energy distribution function were peaked in the plasma center. Normal distribution of the electron density, electron energy distribution function were peaked in the center between quartz plate and substrate. These results were compared to a simple model of ICP, finally, we found out the generation mechanism of Radio-Frequency Inductively Coupled Plasma.

  • In this papur, the STATCOM (STATic synchronous COMpensator) application for efficient operations of wind farm is described. The wind farm connected with the electric power network is one of good alternative energy sources. However, it would be also highly possible that interconnection of wind farm causes unwanted influences on distribution system operation, protection and control. This paper proposes the STATCOM application for reducing the negative effects from interconnection of wind farm with distribution networks. The simulation results show that STATCOM would be on effective and useful device to resolve the bad influences from wind farm on distribution networks and improve the operational efficiency of wind farm. In the simulation, the radial distribution network of IEEE 13 bus was modeled using PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • This paper presents a problem that reconfigure distribution power system using branch exchange method. Optimal reconfiguration problem calculates line loss, voltage condition about system states of all situations that become different according to line On/off status, and search for optimum composition of these. However, result is difficult to be calculated fast. Because radiated operation condition of system is satisfied using many connection and sectionalize switches in the distribution power system. Therefore, in this paper, optimization method for reducing system total loss and satisfying operating condition of radial and constraints condition of voltage is proposed using the fastest branch exchange. And optimal solution at branch exchange algorithm can be wrong estimated to local optimal solution according to initial operating state. Considering this particular, an initial operating point algorithm is added and this paper showed that optimal solution arrives at global optimal solution.

  • This paper presents the logic based islanding protection algorithm for distributed resources(DR) which are interconnected with distribution network. Due to the negative impacts from islanding operations of DR on protection, operation and management of distribution system, it is necessary to effectively detect the islanding operations of DR and disconnect it from distribution network rapidly. Generally, it is difficult to detect islanding operation by monitoring only one system parameter. The proposed islanding protection algorithm utilizes multi-criteria, voltage variation, phase displacement frequency variation, the variation of total harmonic distortion(THD) of current; therefore it effectively detects island operation of DR unit. We also verified the efficiency of the proposed algorithm using the radial distribution network of IEEE 34 bus model.

  • This paper describes a power flow method for distribution systems, applying the method of symmetrical component to back/forward sweep method. The proposed algorithm is effective for unbalanced radial distribution system, with process of distributed resource(PQ & PV node), AVR(Auto Voltage Regulator), shunt capacitor. This proposed method compared conventional back/forward sweep method with the using three phase unbalanced distribution systems with 34 nodes.
