  • Background: Resection of the radial head is a surgical indication for comminuted radial head fracture in which internal fixation is inaccessible. Some complications from the surgery can alter the function of the patient's elbow. The objective of this study was to assess functional outcome of the elbow after resection of the radial head. Methods: A retrospective longitudinal study was performed with patients who underwent radial head resection between 2008 and 2018. Elbow function was assessed by the Mayo Elbow Performance Index (MEPI) for 11 patients comprising three women and eight men. The mean follow-up was 47.6 months. The mean age was 41±10.3 years. Results: Nine patients had a stable and painless elbow. The mean extension-flexion arc was 97.73°±16.03°. The mean values of pronation and supination were 76.8° and 74.5°, respectively. The mean MEPI score was 83.2 points, and restoration of overall function was achieved in 81% of the cases. Poor function was noted in one in 10 that presented with a terrible triad. Conclusions: Resection of the radial head restored elbow functionality at a rate of 81%, which was a good outcome for patients.

  • The study is concerned with the two-dimensional thermo-viscoplastic finite element analysis for radial forging as an incremental forging process. The deformation and temperature distribution of the workpiece during radial forging are studied. The analysis of deformation and the analysis of heat transfer are carried out for simple upsetting of cylinder by decoupling the above two analyses. A method of treatment for heat transfer through the contact region between the die and the workpiece is suggested, in which remeshing of the die elements is not necessary. Radial forging of a mild steel cylinder at the elevated temperature is subjected to the decoupled finite element analysis as well as to the experiment. The computed results in deformation, load and temperature distribution are found to be in good agreement with the experimental observations. As an example of viscoplastic decoupled analysis of hot radial forging, forging of a square section into a circular section is treated. The stresses, strains, strain rates and temperature distribution are computed by superposing material properties as the workpiece is rotated and forged incrementally. It was been thus shown that proposed method of analysis can be effectively applied to the hot radial forging processes.

  • In the high radial nerve palsy caused by displaced humeral shaft fracture, radial nerve have to be explored in the fracture site. 5 cases of the ruptured radial nerve at the fracture site of the humerus from January 1993 through January 2005 were treated at first by open reduction and internal fixation with plates and screws fixation and then defective radial nerves were grafted with autogenous sural nerves by microsurgical epineurial and or perineurial neurorrhaphy. At average 30.4 months follow-up, 5 cases were recovered from motor and sensory deficit with solid bony union of the humerus shaft fracture. Authors have confirmed that ruptured radial nerve in the humerus shaft fracture grafted with autogenous sural nerve with microsurgical epineurial and or perineurial neurorrhaphy would be expected good motor and sensory recovery.

  • This study analyzed the impact of climatic and topographic factors on tree radial growth of Pinus densiflora and Quercus spp. in central regions of Korea. To find the relationship between annual tree radial growth and climatic factors, we took the core samples from individual trees and measured the tree radial width. On the assumption that the tree radial growth is related to the tree age, we estimated the radial growth by the tree age as an independent variable. Also, we estimated the standard growth, defined as the radial growth of trees aged 30. As results, we found the spatial auto-correlation in the radial growth of the red pine. Moreover, we also found the relationships between climatic and topographic and the standard growth using the GAM (Generalized Additive Model). Increase of temperature has negative impacts on the radial growth of Pinus densiflora, while it has positive impacts on the radial growth of Quercus spp.. On the other hands, increase of precipitation has negative impacts on the radial growth of both species. Lastly, we predicted the spatial distribution changes of Pinus densiflora and Quercus spp. using the temperature increase scenario and the Geographic Information System (GIS) based forest type map. We could predict that Pinus densiflora is more vulnerable than Quercus spp. to climate change so that the habitats of Pinus densiflora will be gradually changed to the habitats of Quercus spp. in eastern coastal and southern regions of Korea after 60 years.

  • Recently, the neutron irradiation for large diameter silicon (Si)-ingots of more than 8" diameter is requested to satisfy the demand for the neutron transmutation doping silicon (NTD-Si). By increasing the Si-ingot diameter, the radial non-uniformity becomes larger due to the neutron attenuation effect, which results in a limit of the feasible diameter of the Si-ingot. The current evaluation method has a certain limit to precisely evaluate the radial uniformity of Si-ingot because the current evaluation method does not consider the effect of the Si-ingot diameter on the radial uniformity. The objective of this study is to propose a new evaluation method of radial uniformity by improving the conventional evaluation approach. To precisely predict the radial uniformity of a Si-ingot with large diameter, numerical verification is conducted through comparison with the measured data and introducing the new evaluation method. A new concept of a gradient is introduced as an alternative approach of radial uniformity evaluation instead of the radial resistivity gradient (RRG) interpretation. Using the new concept of gradient, the normalized reaction rate gradient (NRG) and the surface normalized reaction rate gradient (SNRG) are described. By introducing NRG, the radial uniformity can be evaluated with one certain standard regardless of the ingot diameter and irradiation condition. Furthermore, by introducing SNRG, the uniformity on the Si-ingot surface, which is ignored by RRG and NRG, can be evaluated successfully. Finally, the radial uniformity flattening methods are installed by the stainless steel thermal neutron filter and additional Si-pipe to reduce SNRG.

  • The observed radial UBV colour variations (both B-V and U-B) of some globular clusters are examined for correlations with radial variations in the integrated spectra. The results show that the presence of a radial colour gradient is correlated with the presence of a gradient of the CN (and possibly the G-band) line strength, in the sense that the CN (and possibly the G-band) is stronger in the centre (where the cluster is redder) and becomes weaker in the outer region of the cluster (where the cluster is bluer). This may suggest that a primordial abundance, possibly nitrogen and carbon gradient was set up in the early stage of cluster formation.

  • The paper deals with a theoretical study on the redial vibration of cylindrical piezoelectric transducers The differential equations of piezoelectric radial motion have been derived in terms of the radial displacement and electrical potential. Applying mechanical and electrical boundary conditions has yielded the characteristic equations of natural vibration. Numerical resutls of the fundamental natural frequency have been compared with experimental observations for the transducers of several sizes, and have shown a good agreement.

  • In this paper, the workability of flange in the radial extrusion is analyzed in terms of the deformation pattern, the punch load and the forming limit by using simulation and experiment. A single action pressing is applied to both simulation and experiment. The analysis in this study is focused on the transient extrusion into the gap in radial direction with various gap heights and die corner radius. Based on the surface strains where surface cracking occurs, the forming patterns and strain-fracture relationships in producing radially extruded flange are obtained.

  • An important approach towards solving the scattered data problem is by using radial basis functions. However, for a large class of smooth basis functions such as Gaussians, the existing theories guarantee the interpolant to approximate well only for a very small class of very smooth approximate which is the so-called 'native' space. The approximands f need to be extremely smooth. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to study approximation by a scattered shifts of a radial basis functions. We provide error estimates on larger spaces, especially on the homogeneous Sobolev spaces.
