Inhibitory activity of active compound isolated from Ruta chalepensis leaf was examined against alcohol dehydrogenase and, upon comparison to those of four commercially available compounds (quinoline, quinoline-3-carboxaldehyde, quinoline-3-carboxylic acid, and quinoline-4-carboxylic acid) and 1,10-phenanthroline as alcohol dehydrogenase inhibitor, was characterized as quinoline-4-caboxaldehyde by spectral analyses. Inhibitory effects ($IC_{50}$) of quinoline-4-caboxaldehyde and quinoline derivatives varied depending on chemicals and concentrations used. The $IC_{50}$ values of quinoline-4-carboxaldehyde, quinoline-3-carboxaldehyde, quinoline, quinoline-3-carboxylic acid, and quinoline-4-carboxylic acid were 0.04, 0.3, 0.8, >1, and >1 mg/mL, respectively. These results suggest inhibitory action of quinoline-4-carboxaldehyde against alcohol dehydrogenase as prospective therapeutics for treatment of alcoholic liver diseases such as alcohol hepatitis and cirrhosis resulting from chronic alcohol abuse.

The hydrodenitrogenation of quinoline dissolved in n-heptane was studied over sulfided Ni-Mo/$\gamma-Al_2O_3$ catalyst at the range of the temperature between 553 K and 673 and the total pressure between $20 \times 10^5$ Pa and $60 \times 10^5$ Pa in a fixed bed flow reactor. Quinoline conversion was very high at relatively low temperature and total pressure, and decreased with quinoline partial pressure. The thermodynamic equilibrium between quinoline and Py-THQ existed in wide ranges of experimental conditions and shifted in favor of quinoline at higher temperature. At the range of the temperature betwwen 553 K and 673 K and at the total pressure $60 \times 10^5$ Pa, the quinoline reaction rate was 1st order with respect to the concentr4ation of quinoline and its apparent activation energy was 7.15 Kcal/mole.
The bacterium NFQ-1 capable of utilizing quinoline (2,3-benzopyridine) as the sole source of carbon, nitrogen and energy was enriched and isolated from soil samples of dead coal pit areas. Strain NFQ-1 was identified as Pseudomonas nitroreducens NFQ-1 by BIOLOG system, and assigned to Pseudomonas sp. NFO-1. Pseudomonas sp. NFQ-1 was used with the concentration range of 1 to 10 mM quinoline. Strain NFQ-1 could degrade 2.5 mM quinoline within 9 hours of incubation. Initial pH 8.0 in the culture was reduced to 6.8, and eventually 7.0 as the incubation was proceeding. 2-Hydroxyquinoline, the first intermediate of the degradative pathway, accumulated transiently in the growth medium. The highest concentration of quinoline (15 mM) in this work inhibited cell growth and quinoline degradation. Pseudomonas sp. NFQ-1 was able to utilize various quinoline derivatives and aromatic compounds including 2-hydroxyquinoline, p-comaric acid, benzoic acid, p-cresol, p-hydroxybenzoate, protocatechuic acid, and catechol. The specific activity of catechol oxygenases was determined to approximately 184.7 unit/㎎ for catechol 1.2-dioxygenase and 33.19 unit/㎎ for catechol 2,3-dioxygenase, respectively. As the result, it showed that strain NFQ-1 degraded quinoline via mainly orthp-cleavage pathway, and in partial meta-cleavage pathway.
Furo[3,2-h]quinoline derivatives were synthesized as a gastric $H^+$/$K^+$-ATPase inhibitors. The oxycyclization of 7 and 8-positions in quinoline potentiated the inhibitory activity, while no significant changes in biological activity were observed by the variation of substituents in furan ring. The several furo[3,2-h]quinoline derivatives were worthy of in vivo investigation for their anti-secretory and anti-ulcer activity.
The adsorption characteristics of quinoline yellow by granular activated carbon were investigated experimently in the batch adsorber and packed column. The adsorptivity of activated carbon for quinoline yellow were largely improved by acidic pH and higher temperature. When the pH was 3 at $60^{\circ}C$, quinoline yellowcould be removed 97 percent of initial concentration(10 mg/L). It was estabilished that the adsorption equilibrium of quinoline yellow on granular activated carbon was successfully fitted by Freundlich isotherm equation in the temperature range from $25^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$. The estimated values of k and ${\beta}$ are 38.71~166.60, 0.380~0.490, respectively. The breakthrough curve of activated carbon-packed column depends on the design variables such as initial concentration, bed height, and flow rate.
Wet oxidations (WO) of quinoline in aqueous solution were carried out at $225^{\circ}C$ and $250^{\circ}C$. In the WO at $250^{\circ}C$, quinoline was degraded completely within 30 min and the reduction in total organic carbon (TOC) of 63% was achieved during 120 min. However, the rate of the reduction in TOC was only 13% within 240 min during the WO at $225^{\circ}C$. Nicotinic and acetic acid were found to be main intermediates formed during the oxidation of quinoline. With the addition of the homogeneous catalyst $CuSO_4$ or more easily oxidizable phenol, WOs of quinoline were also carried out under moderate conditions at $200^{\circ}C$. The catalytic WO with $CuSO_4$ of 0.20 g/L showed the destruction rates of quinoline and TOC comparable to those in the WO at $250^{\circ}C$. The WOs of quinoline-phenol mixture exhibited induction periods to degrade quinoline and phenol during which free radicals were produced to initiate WOs. With increasing initial concentrations of phenol at a given initial concentration of quinoline, the induction periods in the destructions of quinoline and phenol became shorter and the reduction in TOC increased from 60% to 75% during 180 min of the WOs. The reduction rate of an induction period decreased as increasing the initial concentration ratio of phenol to quinoline. On the other hand, phenol degradation in the WOs of quinoline-phenol mixtures required a longer induction period and proceeded slower compared to the case of the WO of phenol.
This study was to isolate an active component of the chloroform fraction from the methanol extract of Ruta chalepensis leaves and to measure inhibitory effects against ${\alpha}$-glucosidase or ${\alpha}$-amylase. The inhibitory compound of R. chalepensis leaves was isolated using chromatographic methods and identified as quinoline. Quinoline and its structurally related derivatives were tested for their inhibitory activities by evaluating the $IC_{50}$ values against ${\alpha}$-amylase or ${\alpha}$-glucosidase and were compared with that of acarbose. Based on the $IC_{50}$ values, quinazoline exhibited the greatest inhibitory activity ($20.5{\mu}g/mL$), followed by acarbose ($66.5{\mu}g/mL$), and quinoline ($80.3{\mu}g/mL$) against ${\alpha}$-glucosidase. In case of ${\alpha}$-amylase, quinazoline had potent inhibitory activity, followed by quinoline ($179.5{\mu}g/mL$) and acarbose ($180.6{\mu}g/mL$). These results indicate that R. chalepensis extract, quinoline, and quinazoline could be useful for inhibiting ${\alpha}$-glucosidase or ${\alpha}$-amylase.
New quinoline compounds were designed, synthesized, and examined with submitochondria. Most compounds showed high activity against NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase. Inhibition activity was mainly affected by the length of the lipophilic part, regardless of bulkiness or location of a phenyl group in the side chain. The $\beta-methyl$ group was demons)rated to be the optimal functionality on the nuclei of the quinoline derivatives so 4hat either deletion or insertion of a methylene on the group eliminated its activity.
