PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the quiet pavement on reducing a barrier height by using a prediction tool called SoundPLAN. METHODS : Firstly, the prediction was carried out to evaluate the difference in the maximum noise level at a building facade between the normal and the quiet pavements without a barrier. After calculating the noise reduction effect by the quiet pavement, a comparable barrier height to obtain the same noise reduction effect with it was predicted according to designable factors including road-building distance(10 m, 20 m, 40 m) and road-barrier distance(5 m, 10 m, 20 m, 30 m). RESULTS : The result showed that within the considered designable factors, the maximum barrier height was 37 m, 52 m, and 55 m to have the same noise reduction effect by the quiet pavement reducing 1 dBA, 3 dBA, and 5 dBA, respectively. It was evaluated that the barrier height increased with the increase of the road-building and road-barrier distances. To simulate the real situation in urban areas and to evaluate the combined effect of the normal/quiet pavement and barrier, the barrier height was fixed as 6 m. It was predicted that the noise level would reduce to as low as 0.2 dBA by the combination of normal pavement and barrier. On the other hand, the combination of the quiet pavement and barrier reduced 1.2 dBA, 3.2 dBA, and 5.2 dBA, respectively, for quiet pavement reducing 1 dBA, 3 dBA, and 5 dBA. CONCLUSIONS : A guideline needs to be suggested to select appropriate noise abatement schemes by considering factors such as the roadbuilding and road-barrier distances.
PURPOSES : In this study, noise reduction effect of a two-layer porous asphalt pavement was investigated through site measurement and computer simulation. METHODS : To examine noise reduction effect, a 3 km long quiet pavement was installed by removing previous normal pavement, which had a rather low porosity. The studied site was a high-rise apartment building surrounded by the quiet pavement and Seoul ring road with heavy traffic volume, indicating relatively high background noise. RESULTS : The measurement result before and after installing the quiet pavement showed a noise reduction effect of 4.3 dB(A) at a distance of 7.5 m from the road. After validating the accuracy of simulation using SoundPLAN, the reduction in SPL(sound pressure level) at the facades by the quiet pavement was predicted by considering five different road conditions generating traffic noise from each road or in the combination of the quiet pavement and Seoul ring road. In the case of no noise from Seoul ring road, noise reduction at the facades was 4.2 dB(A) on average for 702 housing units. With background noise from Seoul ring road, however, the average SPL decreased to 2.0 dB(A). Regarding subjective response of noise, the number of housing units with a noise reduction of over 3 dB(A) was 229 out of 706 units (approximately 32%). For 77 housing units, the noise reduction was between 1~3 dB(A), while it was less than 1 dB(A) for 400 housing units. CONCLUSIONS : The overall result indicates that the quiet pavement is useful to reduce noise evenly at low and high floors compared to noise barriers, especially in the urban situation where background noise is low.

Two-lalyered quiet asphalt pavements are well known for their noise reduction capabilities compared to the conventional ones. This study was conducted to analyze the economic effects on two-layered quiet asphalt pavement rather than on one-layered. Noise prediction was performed on the data surveyed from the two-layered quiet asphalt pavement. In addition, the economic analysis was executed considering cost benefits using the noise prediction result. The permeability test was also investigated to evaluate the clogging recovery of two-layered quiet asphalt pavement. Analysis results revealed that the construction cost of two-layered quiet asphalt pavements was cheaper than that of the conventional soundproof walls. The two-layered quiet asphalt pavement with simulated clogging conditions was satisfied the permeability requirements of the permeable asphalt pavements. The permeability test results showed that the permeable time was recorded as 6.77 seconds for one cycle of cleaning job with 400 mL of water.
The study examines the quiet pavement using fine-size aggregates and warm-mix technique to reduce traffic noise. In order to evaluate the quality of pavement, mix design and laboratory tests were carried out. Test results showed that using 10mm aggregates can reduce the cantabro loss compared with 13mm aggregates due to increase contact area between aggregates. Mixing and compaction temperatures of warm mix quiet pavement should be determined by gyratory compactor test because it is used high viscosity asphalt binder. Using warm-mix additive could reduce compaction temperature by about $15^{\circ}C$. Noise measurement and permeability tests were conducted at the test road for evaluation of the field performance. All of quiet pavements meet the standard of permeability and have sufficient porosity. Noise reduction of the quiet pavement using fine-size aggregates is more effective than that using 13mm aggregates. In particular, the effect of noise reduction was noticeable at low speeds.

Our domestic economy has been developed very rapidly after 1960's. Also, it is dramatically increasing traffic on road and surround environmental issues. Especially, rapid economic growth has been induced large construction of pavement, and bigger and higher traffic for transportation. These are making air pollution, traffic noise and vibration. The social requirement against the revealed road environment and traffic sound reduction is being demanded. Traffic noise of city zone is showed over the environmental specification more than 57%. In order to overcome these situations, the social attention is being increased. The quiet pavement is the same format of permeable pavement, but is not same for functional performance. In this research, it has been carried out to evaluate the fundamental-mechanical properties of hot mix asphalt for quiet pavement. Especially, couple of laboratory tests are conducted like marshall stability, resilient modulus, indirect tensile test, and compaction energy analysis with gyratory compaction curve. Also, two-layer pavement system has been adopted for developing of quiet pavement. The basic performance of hot mix asphalt of quiet pavement show a satisfaction of specification of hot mix asphalt.

Reasonable methods are needed to predict the noise level of new/existing roads and to select means of noise reduction. In this study, the noise reduction effects of both soundproof walls and quiet pavements were predicted. The noise reduction effects of quiet pavements were predicted by measurement data obtained using the CPX method in test pavements. The noise reduction effect was predicted by KHTN program when applied to soundproof walls and quiet pavement. As a result, the predicted noise level was similar to the measured one. The design method was suggested by an economic analysis using noise benefit of predicted noise reduction. The research suggests that the optimum alternative has to be determined using noise prediction method and life-cycle cost analysis.
The rapid economic development induced the massive road constructions, becoming bigger and high-speed of the vehicles. However, it brings lots of social problems, such as air pollutions, traffic noise and vibration. Special concrete block for the base course of asphalt pavement is needed to decrease traffic noise such as tire's explosive and vehicles sound, applying Helmholtz Resonators theory to asphalt pavement. If it is applied to the area where it happens considerable noise such as a junction, the street of a housing complex and a residential street, it is one of alternative methods to solve the social requirements of noise problems. This research examines couple of laboratory tests for the sound absorption effect of the concrete block and the base concrete block for quiet pavement. The specimens, which is fixed hall-size, space, depth as the condition of this research, are analysed of noise reduction effect using different noise levels of vehicles. Judging from the analysis of test results with vehicle noise volume, measurement distance, a form and size of the hall using the base concrete block, the use of special concrete base and quiet asphalt surface showed a good alternative solution for decreasing traffic noise level, from 4dB to 9dB.

The effects of vehicles and pavement surface types on noise have been investigated at the Korea Expressway Corporation's Test Road along the southbound side of the Jungbu Inland Expressway, South Korea. The study was conducted in 2005 and 2006 through field measurements at nine surface sections of asphalt concrete and Portland cement concrete pavements using eleven vehicles. For the road noise analysis, the sound power levels (PWLs) of combined noise (e.g., tire/pavement interaction noise and power-train noise together) and tire/pavement interaction noise using various vehicles were calculated based on the novel close proximity (NCPX) and pass-by methods. Then, the characteristics of the PWLs were evaluated according to surface type, vehicle type, and vehicle speed. The results show that the PWLs of vehicles are diversely affected by vehicle speed and the condition of the road surface.
