  • We present a novel service discipline, called linear service discipline, to serve multiple QoS queues sharing a resource and analyze its properties. The linear server makes the output traffic and the queueing dynamics of individual queues as a linear function of its input traffic. In particular, if input traffic is Gaussian, the distributions of queue length and output traffic are also Gaussian with their mean and variance being a function of input mean and input power spectrum (equivalently, autocorrelation function of input). Important QoS measures including buffer overflow probability and queueing delay distribution are also expressed as a function of input mean and input power spectrum. This study explores a new direction for network-wide traffic management based on linear system theories by letting us view the queueing process at each node as a linear filter.

  • In this study, we consider characteristics of waiting times in single-server 3-node tandem queues with a Poisson arrival process, finite buffers and deterministic or non-overlapping service times at each queue. There are three buffers: one at the first node is infinite and the others are finite. The explicit expressions of waiting times in all areas of the systems, which are driven as functions of finite buffer capacities, show that the sojourn time does not depend on the finite buffer capacities and also allow one to compute and compare characteristics of waiting times at all areas of the system under two blocking policies: communication and manufacturing blocking. As an application of these results, moreover, an optimization problem which determines the smallest buffer capacities satisfying predetermined probabilistic constraints on waiting times is considered. Some numerical examples are also provided.

  • A new approximation method for finding the steady-state probabilities of the number of customers present in queueing systems with Poisson arrivals and two servers with different deterministic service times with infinite waiting room capacity is developed. The major assumption made for the approximation is that the residual service times of the servers have mutually independent uniform distributions with densities equal to the reciprocals of the respective service times. The method reflects the heterogeneity of the servers only through the ratio of their service times, irrespective of the actual magnitudes and difference. The transition probability matrix is established and the steady-state probabilities are found for a variety of traffic intensities and ratios of the two service times; also the mean number of customers present in the system and in the queue, and server utilizations are found and tabulated. The method was validated by simulation and turned out to be very sharp.

  • An interesting problem in capacitated supply chains is how to guarantee customer service levels with limited resources. One of the common approaches to solve the problem is differentiating service depending on customer classes. High-priority customers receive a better service at the cost of low-priority customers' service level. One of common criteria to determine a customer's priority in practice is whether he has made a reservation before arrival or not. Customers with a reservation usually receive service based on the time the reservation was made. We examine the effect this advance information of customer arrival has on customer service levels. We show the trade-offs between the leadtime and other system characteristics such as the proportion of high-priority customers. when the service level is high. We also suggest how to differentiate service using the asymptotic ratio of the service levels for both types of customers.

  • As a result of the lack of methodology for the determination of navigational channel capacity and the consequence lack of effective management of traffic, navigational channels are often grossly underutilized or highly congested. The traditional rule of first-come-first-served admission of vessels to channels is not efficient as it assumes equal time intervals between entrance of consecutive vessels. A new vessel traffic management system is developed in this research and methodologies to measure the improvement in the channel capacity are developed. Methodology to measure the channel performances for three queue disciplines are developed. The effects of changes in major factors on the channel capacity model such as channel length, fleet mix and arrival rate, as well as changes in strategy are analyzed. Under given channel conditions, best strategy are recommended. Also, a method for effective stochastic channel capacity simulation was developed. The results of analysis and as ertions are compared with the results of simulation runs to prove their applicability.

  • Recently there has been an increasing interest in queueing models with disasters. Upon arrival of a disaster, all the customers present are noshed out. Queueing models with disasters have been applied to the problems of failure recovery in many computer networks systems, database systems and telecommunication networks in this paper, we suffest the steady state and sojourn time distributions of the M/G/l model with disaster and mass alway when the system is empty.

  • Supervisory control is an approach based on formal language. it is used to model and control discrete event systems in which each discrete event process is represented as an automation. A supervisor is a generator that switches control patterns in such a way that a given discrete evenet process behaves in obedience to various constraints. A flexible manufacturing cell (FMC) is one of discrete evenet systems. Functions necessary for the operation of an FMC are characterized by operational components and informational compoments. The operational components can be modeled using the finite state machines and the informational components can be modeled using the abstract formalism which describes supporting operations of the cell controller. In this paper, we addressed function required for FMC control specification, software engineering aspects on FMC control based on supervisory control, a concept of event queue for resolving synchronization problem, and complexity reduction. Based on the mathematical model of an FMC. we synthesized the controller by integrating a supervisor for FMC with control specification that specifies event-driven operation of the cell controller. The proposed control scheme is stable mathematically so that the system always behaves on a controlled way even under the existence of uncontrollable events. Furthermore, using an event queue concept, we can solve a synchronization problem caused by the violation of instantaneity assumption of supervisory control theory in real life situation. And also, we can propotype a control software rapidly due to the modularity of the proposed control scheme.

  • This paper proposes the shuttle protocol that can gather management information from managed systems in an efficient way. In this paper, we implement the protocol and evaluate the performance by simulation. The major feature of the shuttle protocol is a chained logical connection through managed systems, and management informations to be collected are circulated among specified managed systems in circular order on a logical ring connection. The data generated by an managed system are relayed to a neighbor managed system and the system sends its data which has additional management information to received data. Finally, a manager stationman get all of data generated by every managed system. we will show the analysis of management traffic patterns using conventional polling schemes and the shuttle protocol implementation viable to TCP/IP network and improving existing polling mechansims. Additionally, it is performed to evaluate the packet processing time and its distribution of a manager system and a gateway, and the queue length of packet and bit length of gateway against conventional polling schemes by simulation using OPNRT, a simulation-dedicated package.

  • Patients entering an emergency care center in a hospital usually visit medical processes in different orders depending on the urgency level and the medical treatments required. We formulate the patient flows among diverse processes in an emergency care center using the Jackson network, which is one of the queueing networks, in order to evaluate the system performances such as the expected queue length and the expected waiting time. We present a case study based on actual data collected from an emergency care center in a hospital, in order to prove the validity of applying the Jackson network model in practice. After assessing the current system performances, we provide operational strategies to reduce waiting at the bottleneck processes and evaluate the impact of those strategies on the entire system.
