Question taxonomy is one of main approaches to understand the questioner's information need so that we can assign relevant answerers to the question submitted by the user. The goal of this study is to investigate question taxonomy of question and answering services, which are available online and in libraries and understand the characteristics of question answering services by type. In order to achieve the goal, this study examines the types of questions appeared in literature, specifically focusing on social reference, question answering systems, and reference services, and then provides a summary of question taxonomy found in question answering services.
In this paper, we describe a deep analysis of question for question answering system. It is difficult to offer the correct answer because general question answering systems do not analyze the semantic of user's natural language question. We analyze user's question semantically and extract semantic features using the semantic feature extraction grammar and characteristics of natural language question. They are represented as semantic features and grammatical morphemes that consider semantic and syntactic structure of user's questions. We evaluated our approach using 100 questions whose answer type is a person in the web. We showed that a deep analysis of questions which are comparatively short but enough to mean can analysis the user's intention and extract semantic features.

This paper describes a natural language question answering system that can be used by students in getting as solution to their queries. Unlike AI question answering system that focus on the generation of new answers, the present system retrieves existing ones from question-answer files. Unlike information retrieval approaches that rely on a purely lexical metric of similarity between query and document, it uses a semantic knowledge base (WordNet) to improve its ability to match question. Paper describes the design and the current implementation of the system as an intelligent tutoring system. Main drawback of the existing tutoring systems is that the computer poses a question to the students and guides them in reaching the solution to the problem. In the present approach, a student asks any question related to the topic and gets a suitable reply. Based on his query, he can either get a direct answer to his question or a set of questions (to a maximum of 3 or 4) which bear the greatest resemblance to the user input. We further analyze-application fields for such kind of a system and discuss the scope for future research in this area.
With the explosive increase in the number of online medical documents, the demand for question-answering systems is increasing. Recently, question-answering models based on machine learning have shown high performances in various domains. However, many question-answering models within the medical domain are still based on information retrieval techniques because of sparseness of training data. Based on various information retrieval techniques, we propose an answer snippet retrieval model for question-answering systems of medical documents. The proposed model first searches candidate answer sentences from medical documents using a cluster-based retrieval technique. Then, it generates reliable answer snippets using a re-ranking model of the candidate answer sentences based on various sentence retrieval techniques. In the experiments with BioASQ 4b, the proposed model showed better performances (MAP of 0.0604) than the previous models.
The performance of a novel medical question-answering engine called CliniCluster and existing search engines, such as CQA-1.0, Google, and Google Scholar, was evaluated using known-item searching. Known-item searching is a document that has been critically appraised to be highly relevant to a therapy question. Results show that, using CliniCluster, known-items were retrieved on average at rank 2 ($MRR@10{\approx}0.50$), and most of the known-items could be identified from the top-10 document lists. In response to ill-defined questions, the known-items were ranked lower by CliniCluster and CQA-1.0, whereas for Google and Google Scholar, significant difference in ranking was not found between well- and ill-defined questions. Less than 40% of the known-items could be identified from the top-10 documents retrieved by CQA-1.0, Google, and Google Scholar. An analysis of the top-ranked documents by strength of evidence revealed that CliniCluster outperformed other search engines by providing a higher number of recent publications with the highest study design. In conclusion, the overall results support the use of CliniCluster in answering therapy questions by ranking highly relevant documents in the top positions of the search results.

Recently, Linked Open Data has become a large set of knowledge bases. Therefore, the need to query Linked Data using question answering (QA) techniques has attracted the attention of many researchers. A QA system translates natural language questions into structured queries, such as SPARQL queries, to be executed over Linked Data. The two main challenges in such systems are lexical and semantic gaps. A lexical gap refers to the difference between the vocabularies used in an input question and those used in the knowledge base. A semantic gap refers to the difference between expressed information needs and the representation of the knowledge base. In this paper, we present a novel method using an ontology lexicon and dependency parse trees to overcome lexical and semantic gaps. The proposed technique is evaluated on the QALD-5 benchmark and exhibits promising results.
When confronted with a query, question answering systems endeavor to extract the most exact answers possible by determining the answer type that fits with the key terms used in the query. However, the efficacy of such systems is limited by the fact that the terms used in a query may be in a syntactic form different to that of the same words in a document. In this paper, we present an efficient semantic query expansion methodology based on a question category concept list comprised of terms that are semantically close to terms used in a query. The semantically close terms of a term in a query may be hypernyms, synonyms, or terms in a different syntactic category. The proposed system constructs a concept list for each question type and then builds the concept list for each question category using a learning algorithm. In the question answering experiments on 42,654 Wall Street Journal documents of the TREC collection, the traditional system showed in 0.223 in MRR and the proposed system showed 0.50 superior to the traditional question answering system. The results of the present experiments suggest the promise of the proposed method.
One of the factors that have the greatest influence on the error of the question answering system that finds and provides answers to natural language questions is the step of searching for documents or passages that contain correct answers. In order to improve the retrieval performance, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of documents and passages containing correct answers. This paper experimentally analyzes how many question words appear in the correct answer documents, how the location of the question word is distributed, and how the topic of the question and the correct answer document are similar using the corpus composed of the question, the documents with correct answer, and the documents without correct answer. This study explains the causes of previous search research results for question answer system and discusses the necessary elements of effective search step.

Rhetorical relations between two text fragments are essential information and support natural language processing applications such as Question - Answering (QA) system and automatic text summarization to produce an effective outcome. Question - Answering (QA) system facilitates users to retrieve a meaningful response. There is a demand for rhetorical relation based datasets to develop such a system to interpret and respond to user requests. There are a limited number of datasets for developing an Arabic QA system. Thus, there is a lack of an effective QA system in the Arabic language. Recent research works reveal that unsupervised learning can support the QA system to reply to users queries. In this study, researchers intend to develop a rhetorical relation based dataset for implementing unsupervised learning applications. A web crawler is developed to crawl Arabic content from the web. A discourse-annotated corpus is generated using the rhetorical structural theory. A Naïve Bayes based QA system is developed to evaluate the performance of datasets. The outcome shows that the performance of the QA system is improved with proposed dataset and able to answer user queries with an appropriate response. In addition, the results on fine-grained and coarse-grained relations reveal that the dataset is highly reliable.
