  • Phase transition of the Lennard-Jonesian binary system with a free surface was studied by employing molecular dynamics simulation. The main focus of this study was to investigate the effect of size misfit and solute concentration on phase transition during heating and quenching. For a binary system with a free surface, the melting point and the critical quenching rate decrease as size misfit and solute concentration increase.

  • We have developed a high performance powder, which has a quenching efficacy not only for short-chain fatty acids and amines, but also for vinyl ketones (l-octen-3-one, cis-l,5-octadien-3-one), newly found as other key compounds in axillary malodor. By investigating various powders known to have a quenching efficacy, we finally developed a highly porous silica bead containing magnesium oxide. We found that the superior deodorant effect performed by this powder was the result of multiple effects due to both an excellent physical adsorption capability from its high porosity and a specific adsorption of vinyl ketones by magnesium in the powder. An antiperspirant formulation containing both this powder and a Morus alba extract showed good efficacy as a deodorant.

  • The mixed atomized iron powders with 0.3% graphite and 1% Ni powders were cold pressed and sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 30 min under pure Ar gas atmosphere. Some of the sintered specimens were intercritically annealed at $760^{\circ}C$ and quenched in water (single quenching). The other sintered specimens were first fully austenized at $890^{\circ}C$ and water quenched. These specimens were then intercritically annealed at $760^{\circ}C$ and re-quenched in water. The experimental results showed that the wear coefficient effectively decreased in the double quenched specimen.

  • The mechanism of interaction of two drugs viz., amoxicillin and cloxacillin with bovine serum albumin has been investigated using fluorescence absorption and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The quenching mechanism of fluorescence of bovine serum albumin by amoxicillin and cloxacillin was discussed. The binding sites number n and apparent binding constant Kwere measured by fluorescence quenching method. The thermodynamic parameters obtained from data at different temperatures were calculated. The distance r between donor (bovine serum albumin) and acceptor (amoxicillin and cloxacillin) was obtained according to Forster theory of non-radiative energy transfer. The effect of common ions on binding constant was also investigated. The results of synchronous fluorescence spectra, UV-vis absorption spectra and circular dichroism of BSA in presence of amoxicillin and cloxacillin show that the conformation of bovine serum albumin changed

  • Three anthrylazacrown ethers in which the anthracene fluorophore π system is separated from the electron donor atoms by one methylene group were synthesized, and their photophysical study was accomplished. These fluorescent compounds showed a maximum fluorescence intensity at pH=5 in aqueous solutions and a decrease in fluorescence intensity upon binding of paramagnetic metal cations (Mn 2+ (d 5 ), Co 2+ (d 7 ), Cu 2+ (d 9 )). The decrease in fluorescence intensity may be attributed to the paramagnetic effect of metal cations to deactivate the excited state by the nonradiative quenching process. The benzylic nitrogen was found to play an important role in changing fluorescence intensity. From the observed linear Stern-Volmer plot and the fluorescence lifetime independence of the presence of metal ions, it was inferred that the chelation enhanced fluorescence quenching (CHEQ) mechanism in the system is a ground state static quenching process. Enhanced fluorescence was also observed when an excess Na + ion was added to the quenched aqueous solution, and it was attributed to cation displacement of a complexed fluorescence quencher.

  • By using the general theoretical framework proposed recently for treating the fluorescence quenching kinetics, we investigate the effect of light pulse intensity on the decay of fluorescence which follows excitation of fluorophors by the light pulse of very short but finite duration. It is seen that conventional theory breaks down when the exciting light pulse has a pulse width comparable to the fluorescent lifetime and its intensity is very high. We also find that even when the light intensity is not too high, conventional theory may fail in either of the following cases: (i) when the quencher concentration is high, (ii) when there is an attractive potential of mean force between the fluorophor and quencher, or (iii) when the energy transfer from the fluorophor to the quencher may also occur at a distance, e.g., via dipole-dipole interaction. The validity of the predictions of the present theory may thus be tested by fluorescence quenching experiments performed under such situations.

  • The present study deals with the effect of dual cathode buffer layer (CBL) on the performance of bilayer of 4,4'-cyclohexylidenebis[N,N-bis(4-methylphenyl)benzenamine] (TAPC) and fullerene (C70)-based organic solar cell (OSC) with low donor concentration. OSC devices with CBLs have been fabricated using thermal vapor deposition technique. We report the use of lithium fluoride (LiF) and molybdenum trioxide ($MoO_3$) as CBLs. The insertion of LiF between C70 and aluminium (Al) electrode enhances the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of device from 1.89% to 2.47% but quenching of photogenerated excitons is observed at interface of C70 and LiF layers. Incorporation of $MoO_3$ between LiF and Al electrode further enhances PCE of device to 3.51%. This has also improved the material quality and device properties, by preventing the formation of gap states and diminishing exciton quenching.

  • Dwarf galaxies are the most abundant objects in the universe. Hence, understanding the dwarfs is important but relatively little is known due to the lack of computing power and limitations in the telescope resolution. We thus use the state-of-the-art NewHorizon simulation, which is a set of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, to dissect the quenching mechanism working on dwarf galaxies by inspecting the star formation and mass history of individual galaxies. It is known that internal (AGN, SN, stellar feedback) and external (major and minor mergers, ram pressure stripping, strangulation) mechanisms affect the quenching of dwarfs. Because of the combination of these mechanisms, periodicity in the star formation history of the dwarf galaxies is expected. To check for their periodicity, Fourier transform was performed on the star formation history. By comparing the physical timescales and the periodicity, we determine the dominant effect working on the dwarfs. Then, we compare the dominant effects working on the galaxies according to their varying properties.

  • A study has been investigated on the effect of mechanical properties (tension strength, rotary bending fatigue strength, wear resistance, hardness) according to the carbide particle size variation by the treatment of 1) quenching tempering, and 2) quenching, subzero treatment and tempering. The material used in this investigation was a typical bearing steel, high C high Cr, AISI E 52100. The result obtained in this study were as follows : (1) Finer the carbide particle size increasing the hardness and retained austenite in same quenching condition. (2) Finer the carbide particle size reduced the tension and rotary bending fatigue which were resulted from austenite grain growth and carbide precipitation on grain boundry that induced by carbide refine heat treatment. (3) Finer the carbide particel size increasing the wear resistance which were resulted by uniform distribution of carbide and increased hardness induced by microstructural uniform hardenability of matrix. (4) When the carbide particles were refinded, subzero treatment is effective only wear resistance and hardness.
