  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate mineralogical and chemical changes during natural weathering, and assess the mobility of major and trace elements. Yongwol power plant utilize anthracite coal which is mainly composed of illite, kaolinite, pyrophyllite and quartz in mineralogy. Coal and coal-derived fly ash samples were sampled by the electrostatic precipitator in Yongwol coal-fired power plant in Korea. Short term weathered fly ash were also collected in ash disposal mound, and two profile soil samples were taken from an ash near the power plant. Amorphous materials are the main component of the fly ash, and mullite, quartz, magnetite and heamatite are present in all coal-derived fly ash. In chemistry, Si and Al are the most abundant elements of the total content. The ash samples were fractionated into upper $90{\mu}m$ and under $45{\mu}m$ size. Finer particles show higher concentrations in metal contents including Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, V, Zn and Pb. Concentration of Zn and Pb are nearly 4 times higher concentration in the finer particles. For the profile samples, the concentrations of $SiO_2$, $Na_2O$, MgO and $K_2O$ generally show increasing trends with depth, whereas those of $Fe_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ appear to decrease with depth. Content of MnO does not show any specific depth trend. For the trace elements, Co, Cu, Ni and V show increasing concentrations with depth.

  • Transport of Escherichia coli ATCC 11105 through porous media was investigated in this study using two sets of column experiments to quantify the attachment-related parameters (sticking efficiency, attachment rate coefficient and filter factor). The first set of experiments was performed in quartz sand under different ionic strength conditions (1, 20, 100, 200 mM) while the second experiments were carried out in quartz sand mixed with metal oxyhydroxide-coated sand (0, 5, 10, 25%). The breakthrough curves of bacteria were obtained by monitoring effluent, and then bacterial mass recovery and attachment-related parameters were quantified from these curves. The first experiments showed that the mass recoveries were in the range of 13.3 to 64.7%, decreasing with increasing ionic strength. In the second experiments, the mass recoveries were in the range of 15.0 to 43.4%, decreasing with increasing coated sand content. The analysis indicated that the sticking efficiency, attachment rate coefficient and filter factor increased with increasing ionic strength and coated sand content. The value of filter factor in the first experiments ranged from 1.45 e-2 to 6.72 e-2 1/cm while in the second experiments it ranged from 2.78 e-2 to 6.32 e-2 1/cm. Our filter factor values are one order of magnitude lower than those from other studies. This discrepancy can be attributed to the size of sand used in the experiment. The analysis demonstrated that the travel distance of bacteria estimated using the filter factor can be varied greatly depending on the solution chemistry and charge heterogeneity of porous media.

  • The general red-mud minerals consist of hematite, sodalite, anatase, quartz, gibbsite and miner impurities. This gives serious environmental damage for the ocean disposal. It mixed with chloride compound and the content of chlorine is about 2,000-3,000ppm. This paper can be suggested the chloride reduction technology that is applied basically mineral processing by physical separation. Then it can be possible to produce the totally 24wt. $\%$ useful red-mud which chloride content is less then 400ppm.

  • Ni, Fe and NiFe alloy thin films were electrodeposited at a polycrystalline Au surface using a range of electrolytes and potentials. Coulometry and EQCM were used for real-time monitoring of electroplating efficiency of the Ni and Fe. The plating efficiency of NiFe alloy thin films was computed with the aid of ICP spectrometry. In general, plating efficiency increased to a steady value with deposition time. Plating efficiency of Fe was lower than that of Ni at -0.85 and -1.0 V but the efficiency approached to the similar plateau value to that of Ni at more negative potentials. The films with higher content of Fe showed different stripping behavior from the ones with higher content of Ni. Finally, compositional data and real-time plating efficiency are presented for films electrodeposited using a range of electrolytes and potentials.

  • There have been developed a number of methods to assess the abrasivity of rock materials with the increased use of mechanized rock excavation. These methods range from determination of abrasive and hard mineral content using petrographic thin section analysis to weight loss or development of wear flat on a specified cutting tool. The Cerchar abrasivity index (CAI) test has been widely accepted for the assessment of rock abrasiveness. This test has been considered to provide a reliable indication of rock abrasiveness for isotropic rocks. However, a great amount of rocks in nature are anisotropic. Hence, viability assessment of Cerchar abrasivity test for the anisotropic rocks is investigated in this research. The relationship between CAI value and quartz content for the isotropic rocks is well known in literature. However, a correlation between EQ, F-Schimazek value, Rock Abrasivity Index (RAI) and CAI of anisotropic rocks such as phyllite was done first time in literature with this research. The results obtained with this research show F-Schimazek values and RAI values should be considered when determination of the abrasivity of anisotropic rocks instead of just using Cerchar scratch test.

  • Seven-day-old 40 broiler chicks of both sexes were fed the conventional diet containing 0, 0.3, 6 and 0.9% Quartz porphyry(QP) and water ad libitum until 28 days of age. The excreta water content and nitrogen balance were measured during the experimental period. At the end of the trial, blood samples were collected to measure ammonia, glucose, triglyceride, and total cholesterol concentrations. In addition, intestinal ammonia concentrations were measured. The excreta moisture contents decreased significantly(P < 0.05) as QP levels increased(r= -0.96). Ammonia contents in the intestine tended to increase as QP levels increased, but the ammonia concentration in the blood was not affected by the QP levels. The blood glucose concentration was not changed but blood triglyceride concentration was lower in the 0.3% QP treatment than the other groups(P < 0.05), Total cholesterol concentration in the blood tended to increase as QP levels increased. The QP 0.3% treatment showed somewhat higher positive N balance than the other groups. The results of this experiment indicate that the dietary supplementation of QP could offer some benefits to broiler growers.

  • The inside of a quartz glass crucible for semiconductor processing, called a transparent layer, is manufactured using synthetic silica powder. Bubbles existing in the transparent layer of the crucible cause a problem of reducing the quality of the crucible as well as the yield of the silicon ingot. Therefore, the main goal of the synthetic silica powder, which is the raw material of the transparent layer, is to minimize the bubble generation factor. For this purpose, in the case of synthetic silica powder, it is necessary to minimize silanol groups, carbon and pores. In this study, synthetic silica gel was prepared using the sol-gel method, and changes in carbon content and specific surface area were investigated according to calcination temperature and dwelled time in a two-stage calcination process. The first-stage calcination process was performed between 500℃ and 600℃ and the second-stage calcination process was performed between 1000℃ and 1100℃. The dwelled time was carried out from 10 minutes to a maximum of 12 hours. The carbon content of the powder calcined at 1000℃ for 1 hour was 0.0031 wt.%, and the specific surface area of the powder calcined at 1100℃ for 12 hours was 16.6 m2/g.

  • Clear and homogeneous glass inclusions are well preserved at the rim of the quartz phenocrysts of tuff from Sunshin epithermal Au deposit, Haenam, although the host rocks experienced extensive silicification and argillic alteration. Glass inclusion vary in size from $5\;{\mu}m$ to larger than $200\;{\mu}m$ consisting of glass(60~80 vol%) + vapor bubble(15~30 vol%) $\pm$ daughter crystals(<10 vol%). Most of glass inclusions are cubic to rectangular in shape, indicating that the host quartz grew in the stability field of $\beta$-quartz. All the glass inclusions appear to be primary. Glass inclusions are composed of highly evolved high-K calc-alkaline rhyolites, which can represent the final liquidus phase of the magma system. The $Au_2O_3$ concentration (<0.30 wt%) is trivial in the glass, indicating there was no enrichment in the final residual melt. Textural characteristics suggest that magma was water-saturated shortly before or during the eruption. $H_2O$ content of the glass (ca. 2-4 wt%) suggests a water saturation pressure($P_{H2O}$) of about 300-900 bars. This pressure implies a minimum depth of 0.8-2.5 km for the magma chamber.

  • Recently there are difficulties in management of golf courses because of an ever increasing demand for golf as a leisure sports. Hence natural minerals as an amendment could be applied to improve and manage the physicochemical properties of the golf course soils in an environment-friendly way. In this study, quartz porphyry, which has been shown to be a good soil amendment for crop production, was tested for its effect on physicochemical properties of the golf course soil, growth of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) and changes of soil microbial communities in the soil. In general, amendment of 20% quartz porphyry into the soil turned out to be most effective in enhancing a proper growth of the grass leaves and roots. DGGE profile data showed that eubacterial species richness was also the highest at this level of the mineral treatment in which Actinobacteria and ${\alpha}$-Proteobacteria were the dominant phyla. This appeared to be attributed to a low level of soluble organic matter content and decreased concentration of cations such as $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $K^+$.
