  • The thickness and the spectrum of the complex refractive index in the region 1.5~4.5 eV, of an MNA/PMMA thin film fabricated by spin casting are determined. The film thickness and the refractive index in its transparent region is calculated by modeling the spectroscopic ellipsometry data. The extinction coefficient spectrum is obtained from the absorption spectrum in its non-transparent region. The best fit oscillator parameters of the classical Lorentz oscillator and a quantum mechanical oscillator are found. The complex refractive index spectrum by these oscillators are compared. The present technique can be applied to get the thickness and the complex refractive index of unknown polymer films and thus it will be useful in optical characterization of those films.

  • We report on a continuous-wave (cw) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) optimized for mid-infrared emission above 5.0 ㎛. The OPO is based on a magnesium-oxide-doped periodically poled LiNbO3(MgO:PPLN) crystal with a fan-out grating design. A linear two-mirror cavity resonating both at the pump and signal wavelengths is stabilized to the pump laser by using the modified Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) method. The idler wavelength is continuously tunable from 4.7 ㎛ up to 5.3 ㎛ by varying the poling period of the fan-out grating crystal. Pumped by a diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) laser with a power of 1.1 W at 1064 nm, the maximum idler output power is measured to be 5.3 mW at 4.8 ㎛. The output power above 5.0 ㎛ is reduced to the hundreds of ㎼ level due to increased absorption in the crystal, but is stable and strong enough to be measured with a conventional detector.

  • The charateristics of switching between two modes in a ring dye laser has been analyzed by the Monte-Carlo computer simulation. The effect of including pump fluctuations in the first-passage-time (FPT) distributions was compared with the distribution with the quantum fluctuation. The results show the same tendency in both cases, such as steep increases from 0 to peak an exponential decrease in long time range. However the introduction of pumping fluctuation is turned out to shorten the mean FPT. The variation of the mean FPT is examined for the various fluctuationrelated parameters. The mean FPT is lengthened when pump parameter a is increased while it is shorted when Q. $\GAMMA$ are decreased. eased.

  • We report on the parameter-dependent optical characteristics of the unidirectional single-mode lasing square ring cavities. Using the taper-step section in the square cavities, the resonant direction can be selected and we characterize the optical losses by changing the taper lengths. Various kinds of square ring cavities are fabricated, based on InGaAsP/InGaAs multiple quantum well semiconductor materials. From the experimental results we obtain the optimized taper length for a given device structure, while maintaining unidirectional single-mode lasing.

  • Monolithic NOR and INVERTER active optical logic devices inte- grated with surface-emitting microlasers, heterojunction photo- transistors(HPT) in parallel and resistors in series are characterized. The differential quantum efficiency of the typical AlGaAs superlattice microlaser integrated in the active optical logic devices is 15%. Current gain of the HPT is 57, when emitter-collector voltage and input optical power are 4 V and $50{\mu}W$, respectively. $57{\mu}W$ of output power from the active optical logic device decreases to zero when $47{\mu}W$ of input optical power is incident on the HPT part of the active logic device.

  • We present a quantum interference experiment with frequency-entangled pairs of photons with wavelength of 640 nm and 660 nm produced in the process of parametric down-conversion. When photon pairs in different angular frequencies $\omega$$_1$and $\omega$$_2$are registered by two detectors the coincidence counts exhibits a two-photon fringe as a function of relative time delay $\delta$$\tau$ of two photons within the coherence time depending on the arrangement of the detector pairs.

  • The influences of decorrelation on phase sensitivity are studied with a computer simulation based on the Bayesian theorem, when correlated photons produced by parametric down-conversion are incident on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Although the down-converted photons show a perfect correlation in the production process, this degree of correlation may be decreased by reflection, absorption, and scattering during propagation. It is found that this decorrelation results in phase sensitivity degradation, and that the sensitivity is related to the detector quantum efficiency. The results show that when the phase difference between the two paths is smaller the phase sensitivity is better. etter.

  • Measurements of the Faraday rotation and magnetization of terbium-doped Hoya FR5 glass and cerium-doped Hoya FR4 glass have been made as a function of temperature T in the range 4.2 K -10 K and of magnetic field H of up to 80 kG at the $Ar^+$ laser wavelength of 514.5nm. The saturations of magnetization and Faraday rotation above H/T> $5kG.K^{-1}$ can be analyzed by the quantum theory of paramagnetism. Calculated parameters show that the large Verdet constant of $Ce^{3+}$ glass is due to the effective $4f\rightarrow5d$ electric dipole transition effect and that of $Tb^{3+}$ glass is due to the magnetization effect.effect.

  • In this study, we present a detailed investigation of luminescence properties of a blue light-emitting diode using InGaN/GaN (indium component is 17.43%) multiple quantum wells as the active region grown on patterned sapphire substrate by low-pressure metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). High-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman scattering (RS) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements are employed to study the crystal quality, the threading dislocation density, surface morphology, residual strain existing in the active region and optical properties. We conclude that the crystalline quality and surface morphology can be greatly improved, the red-shift of peak wavelength is eliminated and the superior blue light LED can be obtained because the residual strain that existed in the active region can be relaxed when the LED is grown on patterned sapphire substrate (PSS). We discuss the mechanisms of growing on PSS to enhance the superior luminescence properties of blue light LED from the viewpoint of residual strain in the active region.

  • The noise temperature of existing millimeter-wave receivers is already within two or three times quantum noise limit. One of practical ways to increase the observation speed of single dish radio telescope without longer integration time is use of multi-beam focal plane array receiver as demonstrated in several large single dish radio telescopes. In this context the TRAO (Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory), which operates a 143n Cassegrain radio telescope, is planning to develop a 4 x 4 beams focal plane array SIS receiver system for 86-115 GHz band. Even though millimeter-wave HEMT LNA-based receivers approach the noise temperature comparable to the SIS receiver at W-band, it is believed that the receiver based on SIS mixer seems to offer a bit more advantages. The critical part of the multi-beam array receiver will be sideband separating SIS mixers. Employing such a type of SIS mixer makes it possible to simplify the quasi-optics of receiver. Otherwise, an SSB filter should be used in front of the mixer or some sophisticated post-processing of observation data is needed. In this paper we will present a preliminary design concept and components needed for the development of a new 3 mm band multi-beam focal plane array receiver.
