  • In this study, a survey was conducted on Chinese students in a university in Busan, in order to investigate the relationship between oral health-related self-efficacy and quality of life according to smoking experience of Chinese students living in South Korea. The results of analyzing collected data with the SPSS 24.0 program showed that students without smoking experience had higher scores in brushing, oral health-related self-efficacy and oral health-related quality of life than those with smoking experience. Brushing self-efficacy was positively correlated with oral health-related self-efficacy, and oral health-related self-efficacy was positively correlated with oral health quality of life, which were all statistically significant. It was found that the presence or absence of smoking experience was associated with oral health promotion and improvement of quality of life in foreign students. Thus, the results of this study are expected to be used as basic data by conveying the necessity of developing oral health promotion programs for healthy living of foreign students.

  • Background: This study aimed to analyze correlations between depression, cognitive function, oral health state, ability to perform activities of daily living, oral dryness symptoms, and oral health-related quality of life, and determine factors influencing the latter. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study based on questionnaires completed by 260 participants with suspected dementia, residing in South Korea. Psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, and dental hygienists visited clinics in the participating regions for examination and questionnaire administration. General characteristics, the geriatric depression scale, ability to perform activities of daily living, cognitive function, oral health state, and oral health-related quality of life were analyzed. Independent t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were conducted, identifying factors affecting oral health-related quality of life. Data analysis was performed using SPSS ver. 20.0 (IBM Corp., USA), and the significance was set at p<0.05. Results: Approximately 65.0% of participants were female, 63.5% were in their 70s, and 90.0% had health insurance. About 21.5%, 42.0%, and 36.5% were normal, slightly impaired, and had dementia, respectively. High cognitive impairment was associated with poor oral health. Sex, education levels, marital status, and living arrangements influenced oral health-related quality of life. According to the regression analysis, geriatric depression and oral dryness affected the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index scores. Conclusion: In conclusion, oral dryness and depression levels among elders influenced oral health-related quality of life. The results showed that to enhance elders' oral health-related quality of life, it is essential to not only improve their oral health state, but also relieve oral health problems, especially oral dryness, and take into consideration their psychological aspects.

Methods: The subjects were83 elderly people including 42 elderly people of intervention group and 41 elderly people of control group. A dentist and a dental hygienist carried out the direct oral examination. The self-reported questionnaire was completed and the oral examination consisted of decayed tooth, missing tooth, filling tooth, functioning tooth, plaque index, salivary flow rate, and range of motion in mouth opening. OHIP-14 was used to assess the oral health related quality of life. For three months, oral exercise was done twice per week in the experimental group. Results: Before oral exercise, there was no significant difference between the intervention group and control group. After 3 months, there was a significant improvement in plaque reduction and range of motion in mouth opening between two groups (p<0.001, p<0.001). Oral health related quality of life was observed in the intervention group (p<0.001). Conclusions: The oral exercise using toothbrushing remarkably improved the oral health related quality of life in the elderly people.

Complex sample logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the effects of OHP and ODT on health-related quality of life. Results: As a result of confirming the effect of OHP and ODT on the quality of life, which are indicators of the quality of life, HINT-8 had a significant effect even in Model 2, adjusted for demographic characteristics, with a significant difference (p<0.01). Conclusions: The above results confirmed that persons who promote oral health have a significant effect on HINT-8, a quality of life scale developed for Koreans. Therefore, continuous oral care is required to improve quality of life.

  • This study conducted oral examinations and individual interviews on migrant multi-cultural family women in Daegu and measured their socio-demographic characters, oral health conditions and OHIP-14 in an aim to investigate the relevance between the oral health of migrant multi-cultural family women living in some big cities and their quality of life. Based on data finally collected from 189 women, the t-test, ANOVA and binary logistic regression analysis were conducted and the conclusions are as follows: The average number of decayed teeth was 2.23, loss teeth was 1.48, and treated teeth was 5.58. Women from the Philippines had more number of loss teeth than those from other countries, and women from China relatively had a small number of filled permanent teeth. The quality of life related to oral health was found to be poor in proportion to the number of loss teeth. A comparison of life quality related to oral health depending on loss teeth showed that life quality related to oral health was lowest in the areas of mental discomfort, physical ability decrease, mental ability decrease, social ability decrease and social disadvantage. Life quality related to oral health was found to be low in proportion to the number of permanent teeth with decay experience and poor monthly household income, which shows that the number of permanent teeth with decay experience and monthly income are mostly related to life quality related to oral health. As migrant multi-cultural family women's life quality related to oral health is low in proportion to the number of loss teeth and decayed teeth, it needs to develop a program to improve their oral healthrelated life quality and conduct follow-up research to verify its effect.

Methods: The current research design isa nonequivalent control group protest-posttest design with two groups of elders from two different senior centers in D city. Tools for the research include paper of salivary absorption (WF41-1850, Whatman, Germany), 6 items for subjective oral dryness and OHIP-14 for oral health related to quality of life. The data were analyzed to test three hypotheses by using the SPSS 22.0 program. Results: The three hypotheses were significantly accepted. The subjective oral dryness score was lower in the experimental group than in the control group (t=-2.45, p=.022). Salivary absorption was higher in the experimental group than in the control group (t=3.83, p<.001).Oral health related quality of life was better in the experimental group than in the control group (t=-2.11, p=.044). Conclusion: The oral self-care program has appeared to be effective on oral dryness and an oral health related quality of life in the elderly. Therefore, it can be suggested that the oral self-care program is applicable as an intervention program motivating the elderly to maintain oral health.

  • This study was conducted to investigate correlation between oral health belief and oral health-related quality of life (OHIP-14) based on oral health education experience. A survey was conducted on adults living in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam region. Collected data was analyzed using SPSS 25.0. As a result, adults with oral health education experience had significantly higher scores in subfactors of oral health belief and subfactors of oral health-related quality of life than adults without oral health education experience. There were correlations between factors in oral health education experience, oral health belief, and oral health-related quality of life. Therefore, operating oral health education program by life cycle will promote oral health as well as will help to enhance the importance and necessity of oral health education by improving quality of life.
