Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the quality of life (QOL) of adolescents who have inflammatory bowel disease. Methods: This was a descriptive comparative study, and participants were 58 adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease and 55 healthy adolescents. The Korean version of $PedsQL^{TM}$ 4.0 scale was used. Ten adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease were also interviewed. Data were analyzed with SPSS Win. Results: Average score on QOL for these adolescents was statistically lower (p<.001) than healthy adolescents, especially for physical and school functioning. QOL of the adolescents who had the disease for more than 4 years, and were taking 3 or more medications was lower QOL than other adolescents with this disease. In interviews, adolescents complained of physical malfunctioning. In emotional functioning, they worried about the reoccurrence of bloody diarrhea, and mood changes. As for social functioning, dietary restrictions, gastrointestinal symptoms, and poor peer relationships were primary concerns. Lastly, in school functioning, frequent absences and lower academic performance were problems. Conclusion: Considering these results, adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease felt anxious because of the uncertain origin of their disease and unpredictable course of the illness. Interventions should include diaries on food, along with education and counseling as nursing interventions.
Purpose: The aims of this study were to examine the work, client, and personal environments of community health practitioners, including the level of their professional quality of life (ProQOL), and identify the factors affecting their ProQOL. Methods: Data were collected using a web-survey questionnaire, which was completed by a sample of 308 community health practitioners currently working in Korea. The questionnaire included items on ProQOL; three dimensions labeled compassion satisfaction, burn out, and secondary traumatic stress; job stress; job satisfaction; sense of community; and general characteristics. Results: The mean scores for the three dimensions were $39.2{\pm}6.44$ (compassion satisfaction), $31.9{\pm}3.59$ (burn out), and $26.4{\pm}5.05$ (secondary traumatic stress). A multiple linear regression revealed that compassion satisfaction varied significantly according to the satisfaction with job choice, sense of community, job stress, and job satisfaction. The factors affecting burn out were sense of community and work load, while the factors affecting secondary traumatic stress were education, job stress, and job satisfaction. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that comprehensive intervention focusing on improving the sense of community and job satisfaction and reducing job stress is essential to promote community health practitioners' ProQOL.

This study was performed to determine the levels of quality of life(QOL) according to the grade of long-term care service in the elderly people who affiliated from long-term care insurance, and to reveal its association with socio-demographic characteristics, health status and health related behaviors. The interviews were performed, during the period from March 1st, to May 31th, 2009, to 410 elderlies in rural areas. As a results, the levels of QOL were lower in the group of higher grade of long-term care insurance. In hierarchial multiple regression analysis, the factors influencing on the level QOL were age, Living status, Subjective health status, Bed ridden status, Disability of body, Urinary incontinence, Amnesia and Frequency of going out. Especially, the health status variables were higher related with QOL than other variables.
Purpose: We compared the quality of life (QOL) and nutritional outcomes following both Billroth I (BI) and Billroth II (BII) reconstructions after a subtotal gastrectomy in order to identify which reconstruction would produce a better QOL and nutritional outcomes and to provide better follow-up management. Materials and Methods: We studied 273 patients without evidence of recurrent disease following a curative distal subtotal gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Among them, 135 underwent a BI reconstruction and 138 a BII reconstruction. The nutritional status was assessed by using levels of hemoglobin, serum albumin, iron, and vitamin B12 and by calculating the relative body weight, the body mass index, and the percentage of body fat. The QOL was measured by using the Troidl score and by treatment-specific symptoms based on the criteria, somewhat modified by the authors, of Korenaga and others. Results: There was no significant difference in QOL between the BI and the BII groups. More than half of the patients revealed anemia, regardless of the type of reconstruction. The serum vitamin $B_{12}$ level of the BII group was lower than that of the BI group. The BII group showed a tendency toward lower hemoglobin levels and serum iron concentrations than the BI group did. Conclusions: The quality of life was not impaired in most patients after either a BI or a BII reconstruction. However, both resulted in iron deficiency anemia, although the incidence was higher after a BII reconstruction. The patient's serum iron and vitamin B12 should be measured periodically and these must be administered if the measurements reveal a below normal range.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship among the attitudes on exercise, physical activity and quality of life (QOL) in hemodialysis patients. Methods: A total of 42 patients in a hemodialysis unit participated in this study. Physical activity level was measured directly by 6 minute walking test and grip strength test. Structured questionnaires were also used for measuring their attitudes on exercise, physical activity and QOL. Participants' medical records were reviewed for obtaining their biochemical and clinical information. Statistical analysis was performed using Pearson correlation, and multiple liner regression. Results: A significant positive correlation between participants' attitudes and physical activity level measured by International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was found. And the physical activity level measured by Korea Activity Scale/Index (KASI) was significantly related to QOL. Conclusion: This study shows that QOL of the hemodialysis patients was significantly associated with their physical activity level.
This survey is to increase the quality of life by improved oral health. Total 572 Youngnam area residence joined the survey and answered for the subjects of general aspect & health activity, self-determined oral health status, oral health knowledge, oral health activity, food behavior, OHIP-14,THI, QOL. Survey was analyzed by SPSS (Ver. 12.0). Result of the study is summarized as follows; 1. Among total 572 residents, women were 58% and 20~29 aged were 35.5%, highest. In academic background, High school graduated were 59.6%. In average monthly income view, Lower than 1.5 million KRW was 43.5%, 49.3% replied drinks 1~3 times a month. No smoking group was 73.1%. No exercise group was 35.5% and every day exercise group was 11.4%. In self evaluating about oral health status question 40.4%(231) replied as bad, which was highest. 2. Women have higher score about oral health knowledge. Woman and Every day exercise group have better score about oral health practice. Man, 40~49 aged, more than 2.51 million KRW avg' income, every day exercise groups has good score about diet related question. 3. OHIP-14 has lower score as age is older, as more income. THI shows higher score from woman, 20~29, more income group and QOL has higher score from more than college educated, every day exercise groups. 4. Similar correlation indexes on QOL are OHIP-14, diet, oral health knowledge, oral health practice listed in order of effect size. Self-determined oral health index is important to improve quality of life along with health activity, especially oral health recognition index is different depends on age and monthly income that addresses it is necessary to deliver training with carefully designed oral health training program development.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of upper extremity exercise training on the motor activity, the ADL and the health related quality of life. Method: A non-equivalent pretest-posttest design was used. Study subjects were conveniently selected 40 hemiplegic patients(20 experimental subjects, 20 control subjects) who had been enrolled in two community health centers. After biofeedback training the subjects of experimental group were given constraint-induced movement, involving restraint of unaffected U/E in a sling for about 6 hours over a period of two weeks, while at the same time intensively training the affected U/E. Outcomes were evaluated on the basis of motor activity(amount, quality) of plegic side, ADL(ADL, IADL) and health related QOL(SF-36). Results: 1. After 2 weeks of treatment, the amount of use and the quality of motor activity of affected U/E were significantly higher in subjects who participated in exercise training than in subjects in the control group. 2. There were no significant differences in ADL and IADL between experimental and control groups. 3. After 2 weeks of treatment, the health related QOL was significantly higher in subjects who participated in exercise training than in subjects in the control group. Conclusion: The above results state that the U/E exercise training could be an effective intervention for improving the motor activity and the health related QOL of chronic hemiplegic patients. Long-term studies are needed to determine the lasting effects of constraint-induced movement.
Objective : Recently questionnaires that reflect the quality of life (QOL) in asthma patients were developed. We aimed to identify the clinical effects of Gamipaima-tang and the side effects of Gamipaimo-tang in asthmatic patients. Materials and Methods : The subjects are consisted of 34 patients with asthma who had been treated with Gamipaimo-tang for four weeks. Gamipaima-tang is an herbal decoction which has been used as a traditional therapeutic agent for asthma. Pulmonary function test (PFT) was checked before and after 4-week treatments. Quality of Life Questionnaire for Adult Korean Asthmatics (QLQAKA) was checked before and after 2 weeks and 4 weeks of treatment. Results : Treatment with Gamipaima-tang for four weeks resulted in significant increase in FVC%, $FEV_{1.0}%$, PEFR%, and QLQAKA. The total efficacy rate in the patient group was 52.9% after 4 weeks. The total efficacy rate of the step 4 group (n=18, 55.6%) classified by Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) was higher than that of the step 3 group (n=13, 46.2%) classified by GINA. Conclusion : This study shows that Gamipaima-tang has the effects of improvement of pulmonary function and quality of life in asthmatic patients. Obviously further research concerning this is still necessary.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of therapeutic massage (TMP) and home exercise program (HEP) on pain, range of motion (ROM), depression, and quality of life (QOL) after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair in middle-aged women. Methods: Nineteen middle-aged women who underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair were enrolled in the study. All subjects were assigned randomly to the experimental group (n=9) or the control group (n=10). The subjects in both groups performed HEP for 30 minutes, three times per day, for eight weeks. The subjects in the experimental group also performed HEP, with TMP being performed for 30 minutes, 16 sessions for eight weeks. All subjects were evaluated with a visual analogue scale (VAS), shoulder ROM, self-rating depression scale (SDS), and Korean brief version of WHO quality of life scale (WHOQOL-BREF). A paired t-test was performed to test the significant differences between before and after the intervention. An independent t-test was conducted to test the significant differences between the groups. Results: Following the intervention, both groups showed significant differences than before the intervention in the VAS, shoulder ROM, SDS, and WHOQOL-BREF (p<0.05). There were significant differences in the ROM of shoulder flexion, SDS, and WHOQOL-BREF between the groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that intensive TMP is an effective method for improving shoulder flexion mobility, depressive symptom, and QOL in middle-aged women after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a swallowing rehabilitation program for elderly on the stage of dysphagia, nutritional status, and swallowing-quality of life. Methods: The research design was Pretest-Posttest Nonequivalent Groups Design. The subjects of this study consisted of 85 elderly patients hospitalized at geriatric hospitals between August 23rd and October 25th in 2012. Eighty five research subjects were assigned to experimental (42 patients) and control (43 patients) groups. The rehabilitation program was provided to the experimental group 5 days per week for 8 weeks. The effects were evaluated by measurement of Mid-upper Arm Muscle Circumference (MAMC), Total Lymphocyte Counts, albumin, Total Cholesterol, and Swallowing Quality of Life (SWAL-QOL). The collected data were analyzed with x2-test and independent t-test using PASW WIN 18.0. Results: Changes in the stage of dysphagia were not significant (p>.05). In nutrition status, the degree of MAMC points in the experimental group was significantly increased compared with that in the control group (t=2.36, p=.021). In swallowing quality of life, the score of SWAL-QOL in the experimental group was significantly increased, particularly burden (t=3.34, p=.002), frequency (t=2.68, p=.011), fear (t=2.44, p=.019), mental health (t=2.47, p=.018), and sleep (t=2.08, p=.044). Conclusion: Based on the results, this swallowing rehabilitation program for elderly would be helpful in promoting their nutritional status and swallowing-QOL in geriatric hospitals.
