  • Grading and sorting fresh cut flowers are time consuming process. In Korea, cut flowers are sorted mostly by human inspection due to the lack of adequate machinery. In this paper, quality evaluation factors of cut flowers are discussed, and types of sorting machines existing in the market are introduced . Aspects of computer image processing in evaluation the quality of cut flowers are also discussed.

Dose Effect of Phytosanitary Irradiation on the Postharvest Quality of Cut Flowers

  • The present study was conducted to determine the effects of electron beam irradiation on the postharvest quality of cut flowers. Cut flowers were irradiated with electron beam at 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1,000, and 2,000 Gy with a 10 MeV linear electron beam accelerator to evaluate their irradiation tolerance. Postharvest quality was determined by monitoring fresh weight loss, flower longevity, flower diameter, flowering rate, visual quality of flowers and leaves, and chlorophyll content. Cut flowers showed a radiation-induced damage with increasing the irradiation dose. Flower longevity and fresh weight of cut flowers decreased when the irradiation dose was increased. Flower bud opening was also inhibited in a dose-dependent manner. The effective irradiation doses for 10% reduction of postharvest quality (ED10) values were 144.4, 451.6, and 841.2 Gy in the 'Medusa' lily, 'Montezuma' carnation, and 'Rosina White' eustoma, respectively. Although tolerance of cut flowers to electron beam irradiation vary according to species, cultivars, or maturity stage conditions, it is conceivable that 'Montezuma' carnation and 'Rosina White' eustoma could be tolerated and maintained overall postharvest quality up to 400 Gy, the generic irradiation dose approved by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) for postharvest phytosanitary treatments.

Vase Life and Quality of Cut Flower by Wet Solution according to Shipping Period and Temperature in Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Jinba'

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of wet storage solution, transport period and temperature on vase life and quality of cut flowers in standard chrysanthemum 'Jinba'. Immediately after transport, the fresh weight and flower diameter of cut flowers did not show a difference according to wet storage solutions regardless of the transport period, but as the transport period increased, the fresh weight and flower diameter increased. The flower bud stage at harvest was maintained due to the small changes in flower diameter, and the freshness of leaves was better when transported at 5℃ than at 25℃. When transported at 25℃, the longer the transport period, the lower the quality of cut flowers as some petals opened up and showed early flowering after transport. In preservative solutions, quality of cut flowers transported at 25℃ was lower than that at 5℃ due to fresh weight and diameter according to the longer transport period. The vase life of cut flowers was 1.0 day, 0.8 day, and 7.3 days longer when transported for 3, 5, and 7 days respectively at 5℃ than at 25℃. The quality of cut flowers was better due to increase in fresh weight and flower diameter, as well as vase life in wet storage solutions of ClO2 and Chrysal OVB than in tap water, regardless of transport period and temperature. There was no difference in fresh weight and vase life between ClO2 and Chrysal OVB, but flower diameter was greater in ClO2 than in Chrysal OVB. Therefore, for long-term transport of cut standard chrysanthemum 'Jinba', wet storage transport in ClO2 at 5℃ was found effective in maintaining the quality and vase life of cut flowers.

기계시각을 이용한 장미와 국화 절화의 품질 계측장치 개발 (Development of a System to Measure Quality of Cut Flowers of Rose and Chrysanthemum Using Machine Vision)

  • Rose and chrysanthemum are the most popular flowers in Korean floriculture. Sorting flowers is a labor intensive operation in cultivation of the cut flowers and needed to be mechanized. Machine vision is one of the promising solutions for this purpose. This study was carried out to develop hardware and software of a cut flower sorting system using machine vision and to test its performance. Results of this study were summarized as following; 1. Length of the cut flower measured by the machine vision system showed a good correlation with actual length of the flower at a level of the coefficients of determination (R$^2$) of 0.9948 and 0.9993 for rose and chrysanthemum respectively and average measurement errors of the system were about 2% and 1% of the shortest length of the sample flowers. The experimental result showed that the machine vision system could be used successfully to measure length of the cut flowers. 2. Stem diameter of the cut flowers measured by the machine vision system showed a correlation with actual diameter at the coefficients of determination (R$^2$) of 0.8429 and 0.9380 for rose and chrysanthemum respectively and average measurement errors of the system were about 15% and 7.5% of the shortest diameter of the sample flowers which could be a serious source of error in grading operation. It was recommended that the error rate should be considered to set up grading conditions of each class of the cut flowers. 3. Bud maturity of 20 flowers each judged using the machine vision system showed a coincidence with the judgement by inspectors at ranges of 80%∼85% and 85%∼90% for rose and chrysanthemum respectively. Performance of the machine vision system to judge bud maturity could be improved through setting up more precise criteria to judge the maturity with more samples of the flowers. 4. Quality of flower judged by stem curvature using the machine vision system showed a coincidence with the judgement by inspectors at 90% for good and 85% for bad flowers of both rose and chrysanthemum. The levels of coincidence was considered as that the machine vision system used was an acceptable system to judge the quality of flower by stem curvature.

Prediction of the Vase Life of Cut Lily Flowers Using Thermography

  • This study was conducted in order to predict the vase life of cut lily 'Woori Tower' flowers using a non-destructive thermal imaging technique. It was found that the temperature of cut lily flowers was maintained at 20℃ and was slightly lower than the air temperature until they bloomed. On the 11th day, when flowers bloomed, the temperature of leaves and flowers was measured to be 18.75±0.38℃ and 19.23±0.32℃ respectively, and their difference with ambient temperature was over 3℃. The flower temperature increased slightly when the vase life of cut lily flowers ended, and the temperature difference between the air and leaf temperature (1.77℃) and between the air and flower temperature (1.39℃) got smaller. No visible aging symptom was observed, but it was found that the temperature had risen due to water losses and less functional stomata. The vase life of cut lily flowers can be predicted based on changes in temperature and it will be also possible to predict the potential quality and vase life of cut flowers before harvesting them in greenhouses.

Sorting Cut Roses with Color Image Processing and Neural Network

  • Quality sorting of cut flowers is very essential to increase the value of products. There are many factors that determine the quality of cut flowers such as length, thickness, and straightness of stem, and color and maturity of bud. Among these factors, the straightness of stem and the maturity of bud are generally considered to be more difficult to evaluate. A prototype grading and sorting machine for cut flowers was developed and tested for a rose variety. The machine consisted of a chain-drive feed mechanism, a pneumatic discharge system, and a grading system utilizing color image processing and neural network. Artificial neural network algorithm was utilized to grade cut roses based on the straightness of stem and maturity of bud. Test results showed 89% agreement with human expert for the straightness of stem and 90% agreement for the maturity of bud. Average processing time for evaluating straightness of the stem and maturity of the bud were 1.01 and 0.44 second, respectively. Application of neural network eliminated difficulties in determining criteria of each grade category while maintaining similar level of classification error.

벌개미취 절화의 품질향상과 수명연장을 위한 전·후처리제의 효과 (Effect of Pretreatment and Holding Solution on Vase Life and Quality of Cut Flowers of Aster koraiensis Nakai)

  • 본 연구는 수확 후 몇가지 전, 후처리가 자생식물인 벌개미취의 수명과 품질에 미치는 영향을 구명하여 벌개비취를 상품성이 있는 절화로 개발하고자 수행되었다. 수확 후 3% sucrose + $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQC + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;AgNO_3+50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA와 3% sucrose + $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQC + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;AgNO_3$ + $150mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ citric acid 용액에 16시간 동안 전처리한 경우 증류수구보다 절화수명이 1.4배 길어졌다. 3% sucrose + $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQC + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;AgNO_3$ + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA와 3% sucrose + $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQC + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;AgNO_3$ + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;GA_3$ 보존용액에 계속 침지한 벌개미취는 증류수에 비해 절화수명이 1.6배와 1.7배 길어졌다. 이 처리에서 생체중이 증가되고 수분균형도 늦게까지 플러스 값을 유지하여 절화수명이 길어짐을 알 수 있었다. 벌개미취 절화수명에 생체중과 수분균형이 매우 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 판단되었다.

백합의 품종 및 구근크기가 절화품질에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Bulb Circumference and Cultivar on the Cut Flower Quality in Lily.)

  • 본 연구는 고품질 절화백합 생산을 하기 위해 실제 유통 중인 7품종을 구주를 달리 하여 식재하고, 채화 후 구주와 품종이 절화품질에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보고자 수행하였다.절화품질을 측정한 결과, 화뢰장은 'Medusa', 품종, 절화장은 'Mother's Choice' 품종에서 가장 긴 것으로 확인되었다. 줄기휨각도는 'Mother's choice' 품종과 'Ismael' 품종을 제외한 모든 품종이 $30^{\circ}$ 이상으로 나타났다. 화경장, 화서장, 경경, 꽃 수, 중량 모두 구주가 클수록 좋은 결과를 보였다. 절화품질 중 화뢰장, 절화장, 꽃 수에 영향을 미치는 요인은 구주의 크기이며, 휨각도는 품종과 구주의 크기 모두 영향을 받지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 이와같이 절화품질은 품종보다는 구주에 영향을 받으며 크기가 커질수록 좋은 결과가 나타나는 것으로 확인되었다.

수출용 국화 '백마'의 수송온도 및 수확시기에 따른 절화 품질과 수명 (Effects of Shipping Temperature and Harvesting Stage on Quality and Vase Life of Cut Flowers in Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Baekma' for Export)

  • 본 연구는 수출용 스탠다드 국화 '백마'의 모의 수송온도와 개화단계에 따른 절화의 품질과 수명에 미치는 영향을 조사하여 적정 수송온도와 수확시기를 구명하고자 실시하였다. 개화 4단계의 '백마' 절화를 수확하여 $5^{\circ}C$에서 24시간 수송한 후 5, 20, $35^{\circ}C$에서 48시간 모의 수송하여 절화의 품질을 조사하였다. 또한 개화 1단계에서 6단계까지의 절화를 수확하여 $5^{\circ}C$에서 72시간 동안 모의 수송한 후 절화의 품질을 조사하였다. 수송온도가 높아질수록 유통박스 내의 $CO_2$ 농도는 급격히 높아졌으며, $O_2$ 농도는 크게 감소하였다. $35^{\circ}C$$20^{\circ}C$보다 $5^{\circ}C$에서 수송하는 것이 절화수명이 3.8일 연장되었으며, 잎의 엽록소 함량도 345.7로 가장 많았다. 또한 $35^{\circ}C$보다 $5^{\circ}C$ 수송조건에서 절화의 생체중과 흡수량이 높게 유지되었을 뿐만 아니라 화경도 보존용액에서 8일째에 2.3cm 더 길었다. 개화 6단계보다 개화 1-2단계에서 수확한 절화의 수명이 5.2-5.5일 연장되었다. 그러나, 개화 1단계부터 3단계까지의 절화들은 개화 4-6단계보다 생체중이 낮았을 뿐만 아니라 화경도 1.3-2.5cm 더 작았다. 또한 개화 4-6단계의 절화는 개화 1-3단계의 절화에 비해 상대적으로 흡수량이 많은 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 일본 수출용 '백마'는 설상화의 개화상태와 품질을 고려한다면 개화 4단계의 절화를 $5^{\circ}C$ 조건에서 수송하는 것이 가장 바람직하다고 판단되었다.

오리엔탈 나리 '시베리아' 절화의 포장내 건식저장 기간별 수분함량과 품질 변화 (Changes in Moisture Content and Quality of Oriental Hybrid Lily (Lilium oriental cv. Siberia) Cut Flowers during Storage at Cold and Dry Condition and Subsequent Exposure to Ambient Temperature)

  • 오리엔탈 나리 '시베리아'의 건식저장 기간에 따른 절화 보존 시 수분함량 변화와 절화수명을 구명하고자 하였다. 본 실험에서 저장 기간에 따라 저온 저장($5^{\circ}C$)을 한 다음 절화수명에 관계된 수분 및 품질 변화와 개화 정도를 검토하여 '시베리아' 나리의 절화 수확 후 관리 기술에 관계된 기본적인 자료를 얻고자 하였다. '시베리아' 나리를 채화하여 저온에서 건식저장 기간에 따라 3일, 6일, 12일한 후 절화보존 동안에 생체중 변화, 수분균형, 개화정도 등을 조사하였으며 대조구로서 상온 건식저장과 비교하였다. 저온 건식저장 후에 '시베리아' 나리의 수분함량은 건식저장 기간에 영향을 받아 저장하는 기간이 짧을수록 높아져 저장 3일이 다른 처리구보다 높아지는 경향을 보였다. 꽃의 수분함량은 절화보존 시 지속적으로 증가하는데, 저장 기간이 짧을수록 수분이 높게 유지되었다. 생체중 변화는 건식저장 기간에 영향을 받아 저장 기간이 짧았던 것에서 생체중의 증가 정도가 컸으며 음(-)의 값에 이르는 기간이 늦어지는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 절화보존 시 생체중 변화는 저온 건식저장 3일이 생체중 증가 정도가 완만하게 변하며 수분균형도 8일째에 음(-)의 값에 도달하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 저장 온도 차이에 따른 생체중 변화는 상온에서 저장한 절화가 저온저장보다 증감 정도가 더 빠른 것으로 나타났다. 개화정도는 '시베리아' 나리의 건식저장 기간이 길어질수록 개화시기가 빨라지며, 절화가 빨리 시들어 상품으로써 유지 기간이 짧아졌다. 개화상태를 비교해 보면 3일 저온 건식저장이 다른 처리보다 개화하는 속도가 늦었으나 절화수명은 다른 처리구보다 길게 나타났다. '시베리아' 나리의 저온 건식저장은 저장 기간이 짧을수록 저장 후 수분함량이 높고 수분 균형값이 음(-)에 늦게 도달하였으며 개화상태가 좋고 절화수명도 길어지는 것으로 나타났다. '시베리아' 나리는 건식저장을 통한 작물체내 수분 함량 감소가 절화보존 시 개화 특성에도 영향을 미쳐 저장기간이 길수록 절화수명이 감소하여 상품 가치를 떨어뜨렸다. '시베리아' 나리 절화를 소비자가 이용 시, 상품 가치 유지를 위해서는 기존 결과의 6일 동안 저온 건식저장도 절화수명을 단축시키므로 저장 기간을 최소화하는 것이 절화 품질 유지를 위해 바람직하다고 판단된다.
