Evaluation of Garlic Germplasm for Resistance to Leaf Blight Caused by Stemphylium vesicarium (마늘 유전자원의 Stemphylium vesicarium에 의한 잎마름병 저항성 평가)

  • Leaf blight caused by Stemphylium vesicarium is one of the most important fungal diseases of garlic (Allium sativum L.) worldwide, which results in a reduction of quality and yield. The breeding of resistant cultivars is an efficient approach to decrease the use of chemical fungicides and minimize crop losses. In this study, to find the resistant garlic resources against S. vesicarium, we evaluated the resistance degree of 20 garlic germplasms. To do this, garlic seedlings at four-leaf stage were rubbed with nonabsorbent cotton and then inoculated with spore suspension (3.0×105 spores/ml of potato dextrose broth) of S. vesicarium by spray method. Three to seven days after inoculation, the infected leaf area (%) of garlic seedling was measured. 'Daeseo' and 'Namdo' were included as susceptible and resistant control cultivars, respectively. After 3 to 7 days of incubation, the infected leaf area (%) of garlic seedling was measured. Our results showed that IT245512, IT245528, and IT244068 lines exhibited the highest resistance against S. vesicarium, whereas IT257134 and IT253043 lines were more susceptible than the susceptible cultivar 'Daeseo'. Based on the results, the resistant genetic resources selected in this study can be used a basic material for resistant garlic breeding system against leaf blight.

Studies on Brewing of Apple Wine -Apple wine containing lower concentration of alcohol- (사과주(果實酒)양조(釀造)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) -저농도주정함유(低濃度酒精含有) 사과주에 관(關)하여-)

  • This study aims to brew apple wine containing lower concentration of alcohol by fermentation and to retain $CO_2$ gas in apple wine, and investigation for the possibility of storage at room temperature was performed. A Saccharomyces sp. was proved to be acceptable for production of base wine as its higher fermentation rate at $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$. However, B-2 was most reasonable for post-fermentation of apple wine as this strain strongly ferments sugars at low temperature $(4^{\circ}C)$. The yield of apple juice increased by maceration of apple pulps. The yield was about 5 % more than that of the unmacerated juice, whereas acid content was decreased by 10% compared with control. When stored apple wine containing 9% alcobol was introduced $1{\sim}3%$ sucrose at $7{\sim}8^{\circ}C$ for 100 days or more, the $CO_2$ pressure of apple wine in bottle shows $3kg/cm^2$ by bottle-pressure meter. It showed good storage of the wine at room temperature. $CO_2$ gas pressure in apple wine containing 6% alcohol, $5{\sim}10%$ hop extract, and 2% sugar was $2kg/cm^2$, he result also showed possibility of storage. Whereas 6% concentration of alcoholic apple wine without hop extract caused unusual fermentation during storage at the same condition. The desirable conditions for high quality apple wine should have $CO_2$ pressure of $2kg/cm^2$ or more and should be added $1{\sim}2% sugar to base wine. From these results, it can be concluded that the brewing of lower alcoholic apple wine is possible.

Effect of High Temperature on Leaf Physiological Changes as Chlorophyll composition and Photosynthesis Rate of Rice (벼 등숙기 고온이 잎의 엽록소구성과 광합성 및 생리적 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • High temperature impairs rice grain yield and quality. To understand the effect of high temperature on leaf physiological activity and grain filling, two cultivars of rice that Dongan and Ilpum were exposed to high temperature during ripening stage. Grain filling rate, perfect grain ratio and grain weight of high temperature ($27^{\circ}C{\pm}4^{\circ}C$) treated both rice cultivars were decreased than those of control temperature ($22^{\circ}C{\pm}4^{\circ}C$) treated. The reduction rates of grain filling ratio, perfect grain ratio and grain weight of high temperature treated to control treated rice were higher in Ilpum than Dongan. Chlorophyll contents of rice leaves under high temperature at early ripening stage were higher than those of control temperature, but those were slowly decreased with no difference between temperature treatment since at mid ripening stage. Although chlorophyll a/b ratio under high temperature was decreased from heading to 15 days after heading, that was gradually increased since 15 days after heading. Protein concentrations of rice leaves for ripening stage was a similar pattern with chlorophyll changes. The rate of photosynthesis at 14 days after heading under high temperature was higher than those of control temperature, but there was no difference at those of 7 and 34 days after heading between two temperature treatment. Free sugars under high temperature treated leaves were lower than control temperature. Consequently, these results exhibit that high temperature accelerate leaf physiological activity as chlorophyll synthesis and photosynthesis rate unlike the deterioration of grain filling.

  • The utilization of soybean milk has lasted for past several thousand years, mostly in Orient as a Precious food or as a substitute for cow's milk. There are several hundred varieties in soybean that is called Glycine max Merryl There are three typical varieties, Yellow, Black and Green. However, these are due to pigment in soybean cuticle while their chemical constituents are similar (Table 2). Soybean milk is constituted of protein, fat and carbohydrate of soybean, and these constituents are extracted by hot water. Thus becomes emulsion which is highly digestible and nutritious for human diet. However, it was not found any report on the water extractability comparison between two different varieties Black cuticle soybean which is common in India and Yellow cuticle soybean which is common in Korea. Also there was no report on the comparison on the yield and organoleptic quality derived by varied process. Also several attempts were carried out to improve nutritional value as well as acceptability by use of food additives. A model of continuous soybean milk plant was introduced.

Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Slabs Connected with Hinge Joints of Remodelling Buildings (리모델링 건물의 활절점에 의하여 연결된 철근콘크리트 바닥판의 거동 평가)

  • Lately outmoded and functionally obsolete buildings constructed in 1960s and 1970s are often remodelled and restored. Even though there are not serious structural defects in the existing buildings, many old buildings have been reconstructed to improve residence quality or to extend residence area of the buildings. The experimental or theoretical research on plane expansion of RC apartments is quite scare. In this research, 12 specimens and 19 RC slabs connected by hinged joints were tested. The new slab was connected to the existing slab by hinge joints injecting dowel bars between two slabs. Main parameters of the slabs are types of the dowel bars (D13 and D19), spacing of the dowel bars (150mm, 300mm, and 450mm), and the locations of the steel bars in the existing slabs. The test results indicated that the shear strength of the RC test slabs having various types of dowel bars was about twice that calculated by the ACI 318-02 code. All slabs failed in concrete spatting and the dowel steel bars did not reach their yield strengths.

Functional cosmetic properties and antimicrobial activity of extracts from Saururus chinensis by elicitor treatment (Elicitor 처리에 의한 삼백초 추출물(Saururus chinensis)의 미용식품활성 및 피부상재균 억제효과)

  • In this study, the functional cosmetic activity of water and ethanol extracts from Saururus chinensis by elicitor treatment are examined. Anti-oxidative activity 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and antioxidant protection factor of elicitor treated S. chinensis extract increased in concentration dependent manner as concentration increased from 1.5 mg elicitor/leaf 1 g (group A) to 3.0 mg elicitor/leaf 1 g (group B). Also, 70% ethanol extract showed higher anti-oxidative activity than water extract. Elicitor treated S. chinensis extract showed similar inhibitory effect on elastase activity and whitening effect indicating low effect of elicitor on elastase inhibition and whitening effect. However, it showed high anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial activity compared to control group. Both group A and B showed high anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial activity then control group indicating that elicitor treatment is suitable for biomass method used for industrializing useful compounds. Therefore, elicitor treatment during S. chinensis cultivation will increase bioactivity in the plant source which will yield high quality for industrialization.

  • On April 4 to 6, 2005, there was a huge fire in Yangyang-gun, Kangwon-do, Korea, which burned over 250ha of forests and 246 buildings including 160 houses. The effects of reseeding rate and timing on productivity and nutritive value of forages in the forest fire burnt pasture in this study were investigated. The effect of reseeding could not be seen in the burnt pastures in terms of forage productivity and quality in short term but there was a long-term effect particularly with higher reseeding rates at later days after the fire on forage botanical composition. We concluded that forest fire brought reduction in pasture forage yield for a short period but it did not make a significant effect for a long term.

Variety, Cutting Date and Physiological Functionality for Production of Leaves in Goji Berry (Lycium chinense Mill.) (구기자 잎 생산에 알맞은 품종, 예취시기 및 생리활성 평가)

  • Goji berry (Lycium chinense Mill.) is one of medicinal plants. Its leaves has been used to manufacture the functional foods by replacing the dried-fruit because of low production costs. In order to produce the leaves of uniform quality, continuous selection and the establishment of cultivation techniques were required. Among the eleven recommended cultivars, 'Myeongan' showed high yielding and rapid regeneration after cutting. The dried-leaf yield was linearly increased from 106 kg/10a on May 16 to 287 kg/10a on June 20. An appropriate cutting date and cutting length (about 60-70 cm) was important factors for its efficient regeneration. The late cutting times were not suitable due to difficulties during plant harvesting because of stem rigidity and thorn generation. The betaine content of leaves ranged from 1.43 ~ 2.63% and significantly affected by the varieties and the cutting dates. The main physiological functionality of leaf was Angiotesin-1-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity, representing the anti-hypertensive. The other physiological functionalities, XOD inhibitory activity, antioxidant activity, tyrosinase inhibitory activity, SOD-like activity, α-glucosidase inhibitory activity and fibrinolytic activity, were not detected or less than 20%.

  • The Mass Flow Controller(MFC) has become crucial in semiconductor manufacturing equipments. It is an important element because the quality and the yield of a semiconductor process are decided by the accurate flow control of gas. Therefore, the demand for implementing the high speed and the highly accurate control of MFCs has been increasing. It is hard to find an article of the control algorithm applied to MFCs. But, it is known that commercially available MFCs adopt PID control algorithms. Particularly, when the system detects the flow by way of heat transfer, the MFC control problem includes the slow response and the nonlinearity. In this paper, MFC control algorithm with a superior performance to the conventional PID algorithm is discussed and the superiority is demonstrated through the experiment. A fuzzy controller was utilized in order to compensate the nonlinearity and the slow response, and the performance is compared with that of an MFC currently available in the market. The control system, in this paper, consists of a personal computer, the data acquisition board and the control algorithm carried out by LabWindows/CVI program on the PC. In addition, a method of estimating the actual flow from the sensor output with the slow response is presented. In conclusion, according to the result of the experiment, the proposed algorithm shows better accuracy and is faster than the conventional controller.

Triazine Herbicide Treatment and Survival Rate of Pearl Millet Seedlings (Triazine 제초제(除草劑) 처리(處理)와 진주(眞珠)조의 생존율(生存率))

  • Pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) has been found as a promising new forage crop of higher quality and yield in Korea since 1985. The objective of the study was to select preemergence herbicides for weed control in growing pearl millet in order to reduce production cost and with increased yields. Propazine (Milogard 4L) was the best in controlling weeds without its phytotoxicity at the standard application rate, and with the highest survival rate of seedlings of peal millet "Suwon 1" hybrid. Sprayings with Atrazine and Simazine caused lower survival rate of peal millet and with their light phytotoxicity as compared with manual weeding and Propazine spraying. Alachlor killed pearl millet seedlings almost completely. Pendimethalin also was not good for weed control of peal millet due to its severe phytotoxicity and with very low survival rate of pearl millet seedlings.
