This research conducted a component analysis and conservation treatment of "Sangryangmun," a material which had been written in 1965 and was discovered during the repair project for "Jinnamgwan" in Yeosu. The "Sangryangmun" has been stored in a cylindrical metal storage; however, defects, discolorations, hardening, and damages caused by pollutants were found. Based on the XRF analysis, rust in the cylindrical metal storage, which was made of Cu, was stuck on the surface of the "Sangryangmun". Using FT-IR and Pyrolysis-GC/MS analyses, carbonyl and compounds of fatty acids were detected; the organic material on the surface of the "Sangryangmun" was identified to have belonged to oil-based components. Therefore, it was presumed that the bast fibers of a mulberry was used in the paper. To determine the conservation materials, component analysis, condition survey, and preliminary test on adhesives were conducted. Moreover, the missing parts and partial linings were filled using mulberry-fiber paper, methyl cellulose, etc.
A fast and simple sampling and sample preparation device, (NTD) has been developed and applied to sample and analyze volatile components from ground coffee beans. Coffee fragrances and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were sampled by the NTD and then analyzed by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Divinylbenzene (DVB) particles (80/100 mesh size) were the sorbent bed of the NTD. More than 150 volatile components were first identified based on the database of the mass library and then finally 30 fragrances including caffeine were further confirmed by comparing experimental retention indices (i.e. Kovat index) with literature retention indices. Total sampling time was 10 minutes and no extra solvent extraction and/or reconstitution step need. Straight n-alkanes (C6-C20) were used as retention index probes for the calculation of experimental retention indices. In addition, this report suggests that an empty needle can be an alternative platform for analyzing polymers by pyrolysis-GC/MS.
The total hydrocarbon distribution of oil products obtained from the pyrolysis of four kinds of mixtures of polyethylene-polystyrene waste has been studied by multidimensional chromatography(high performance liquid chromatography followed by capillary gas chromatography)/mass spectrometry. Saturated, unsaturated and aromatic hydrocarbons in oil products were selectively pre-separated according to structural groups by HPLC and the weight fraction of each group was estimated by analysis of each component using GC-FID response factors. The hydrocarbon distribution of aliphatic fraction consists of $C_{5}$ to $C_{25}$ saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons. And that of aromatics fraction consists of benzene, toluene, xylene, styrene, propenyl benzene, naphthalene, and some of derivatives. Pyrolysis temperature did not affect the ratio of total weight fraction of aliphatic over aromatic hydrocarbon distribution in case of PS only and PE-PS mixtures (1:1 and 1:4 wt. ratio) as a feed while affected the ratio of total wt. fraction in case of PE only. The optimal temperature for the maximum oil production was $600^{\circ}C$ for pyrolysis of PS and 1:1 and 1:4 mixtures of PE and PS. The optimal condition for aromatic recovery was $600^{\circ}C$ with 1:1 mixture of PE and PS. In this condition, aromatic was produced up to 90% of total oil product. The maximum yield of toluene, xylene, styrene, and propenyl benzene were 8.6, 8.9, 51.0 and 7.4% of feed for pyrolysis PS at $700^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, only 1.3% naphthalene was recovered at $700^{\circ}C$ with 1:1 PE:PS(by wt.).

Pyrolytic characteristics of mixed plastics containing 22 wt.% HDPE, 17 wt.% LDPE, 27 wt.% PP, 12 wt.% PS, 16 wt.% ABS, 6 wt.% PVC have been studied in the batch-type microreactor of stainless steel. Thermal degradation experiments were performed at temperature of $410{\sim}450^{\circ}C$. The yield of each pyrolytic products were obtained by the weight measurement and molecular weight distribution of pyrolytic liquid products determined by the GC-SIMDIS method. It was shown that the yield and molecular weight of pyrolytic liquid product were decreased with the increase of reaction temperature and time. It was know that 20wt% of PVC composing of the mixed plastics was converted to the gas products of chloride during the pyrolysis process. The chain-end scission rate parameter was determined to be 50.2 kcal/mole of mixed plastics by the Arrhenius plot.
This study was carried out to present a analysis of pyrolytic degradation of 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzal dehyde(vanillin) pyrolyzed at $330^{\circ}C{\sim}920^{\circ}C$ by Curie-point pyrolyzer connected with GC/MSD by on-line system. Identified by GC/MSD were 100 pyrolytic products of vanillin. The pyrolysis of the compound gave benzene, phenol, 1,3-cyclopentadiene, methyl benzene, benzaldehyde, benzofuran, and cresol as major products, which were produced by pyrolytic degradation and synthesis of vanillin radicals.

Fast pyrolysis bio-oil has unfavorable properties that restrict its use in many applications. Among the main issues are high acidity, instability, and water and oxygen content, which give rise to corrosiveness, polymerization during storage, and a low heating value. Esterification and azeotropic water removal can improve all of these properties. A 500 g of Quercus mongollica which grounded 0.8~1.4 mm was processed into bio-oil via fast pyrolysis for 2 seconds at $550^{\circ}C$. The esterification consists of treating pyrolysis oil with a high boiling alcohol like n-butanol at $70^{\circ}C$ under reduced pressure (100 hPa). All products are analyzed for water mass fraction, viscosity, higher heating value, pH, FT-IR and GC/MS. The water mass fraction can be reduced by 91.4 % (from 31.5 % to below 2.7 %), the viscosity by 65.8 % (from 36.5 to 12.5 cP) and the higher heating value can be increased by 96.8 % (from 3,918 to 7,712 kcal/kg), the pH by 1.3 (from 2.7 to 4.0). FT-IR and GC/MS analysis indicated that labile acids, aldehydes, ketones and lower alcohols were transformed to stable target products. Using this approach, the water content of the pyrolysis oil is reduced significantly. These improvements should allow the utilization of upgraded pyrolysis liquids in standard boilers and as fuel in CHP (Combined heat and power) plants.
Rice straw is one or the main renewable energy sources in Korea. Bio-oil is produced from rice straw with a lab-scale equipment mainly with a fluidized bed and a char removal system. It was investigated how the reaction temperature affected the production of bio-oil and the efficiency of a char removal system. To elucidate how the temperature depended on the production of bio-oil, experiments were conducted at $466^{\circ}C,\;504^{\circ}C\;and\;579^{\circ}C$, respectively. The mass balance was established in each experiment, and the produced gas and oil were analyzed with the aid of GCs and a GC-MS system. The char removal system is composed of a cyclone and a hot filter. Tn the experiments, we observed that the production of bio-oil was decreased with temperature, and the bio-oil contained very useful chemicals.

The constituents of deposits on paper machine and holes/spots in paper have been studied by consequently a combination of analytical techniques, such as FTIR, Py-GC-MS, and. EDS. FTIR spectroscopy was used prior to Py-GC-MS and EDS analysis, as preliminary analysis technique. The analysis of organic components were carried out with the use of a pyrolysis unit connected to a GC-MS, and inorganic components in ash were analysed by SEM equipped with an EDS analyzer after pyrolysis at 59$0^{\circ}C$. The deposits on the dryer section were complex pitch, which was the mixture of the organic contents of fatty acid ester and starch, and the inorganic contents of talc, clay, and calcium carbonate. The complex pitch was estimated to come from the coated broke. We knew the deposits on the metering rod of sym-sizer were associated with the interaction of unstable AKD and CaCO$_3$. The compositions of holes or spots varied considerably and were associated with chemical interaction within the system. The holes, spots, and blotches in the finished paper were PE and PP that were streamed out from pulp sources, complex pitch that were caused by the interaction of the different additives in the system, polymer such as flexible PVC that used for the prop of palette, and hot melt as adhesives that came from the inadequate handling of broke. In addition, we identified that poly(caprolactam) which is used for forming fabrics or press felts, could be mixed with the raw materials by accident and results in streak on coating.

Using fluidized bed type fast pyrolysis system (capacity 400 g/h) bio-oils were produced from beech (Fagus sylvatica) and softwood mixture (spruce and larch, 50:50). The pyrolysis was performed for 1~2 s at the temperature of $470{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. Pyrolysis products consisted of liquid form of bio-oil, char and gases. In beech wood bio-oil was formed to ca. 60% based on dry biomass weight and the yield of bio-oil was 49% in soft wood mixture. The moisture contents in both bio-oils were ranged between 17% and 22% and the bio-oil's density was measured to $1.2kg/{\ell}$. Bio-oils were composed of 45% carbon, 47% oxygen, 7% hydrogen and lower than 1% nitrogen, which was very similar to those of original biomass. In comparison with oils from fossil resources, oxygen content was very high in bio-oils, while no sulfur was found. More than 90 low molecular weight components, classified to aromatic and non aromatic compounds, were identified in bio-oils by gas chromatographic analysis, which amounted to 31~33% based on the dry weight of bio-oils.
Lacquer has been used as a natural paint or adhesive in Korea since 2nd century B.C. It has been found to have been used as an adhesive as mentioned in old records and as seen in excavated relics, It was also mixed with flour, animal glue, or fish glue to produce lacquer adhesives. Qualitative analysis and evaluation of the applicability of lacquer and additives was performed in this study. The results of EGA analysis for lacquer additives confirmed that the pyrolysis temperature of lacquer, glucose glue, and animal glue. On the basis of this result, raw lacquer sample was checked that pyrolysis product that originated from urushiol side chain (R group). Components originating from glucose and amino acid were detected in glutinous rice paste and animal glue samples. In this study, the optimum pyrolysis temperature for each lacquer and additive mixture was determined from basic qualitative analysis data. By performing the qualitative analysis of each mixture, the applicability of this technique for analyzing real relics was evaluated.
