A breeding plan was carried out on four commercial strains of silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) 101, 102, 103 and 104 to improve some important traits. Genetic gain or response to selection $({\Delta}G)$, heritability of cocoon shell weight (CSW) and specific combining ability effects were estimated to determine the strains that can be improved. Strain 101 had lowest heritabitity, ${\Delta}G$ and viability. Strain 102 was acceptable in selection response but its viability was low. Therefore these two strains were not suitable for more selection. As a result, only lines 103 and 104 were chosen for further improvement. Intra population selection based on independent culling level method practiced from third to sixth generation for both productive and viability traits simultaneously. While CSW and CW had increasingly enhanced during primary generations, they went slightly up after third generation. According to negative genetic correlation, viability decreased during primary generations, but after third generation that paid attention to balanced development of both productive and viability traits, viability increased so that the pupation rate reached to $91\%$ in 103 and $97\%$ in 104 for last generation $(G_8)$.

Successful silkworm breeding attempts were made at Andhra Pradesh State Sericulture Research and Development Institute (APSSRDI), Hindupur, India in developing productive bivoltine silkworm hybrids. One hundred hybrid combinations involving 10 parents (five each of oval and peanut) were evaluated in complete diallel pattern and identified the combination APS$_{83}$$\times$ APS$_{102}$ as most promising. This hybrid showed economic merit for the characters fecundity (524 eggs/laying), pupation percentage (96.0$\%$), cocoon yield per 10,000 larvae by weight (19.0 kg), cocoon weight (1.85 g), shell weight (41.7 cg), shell ratio (22.5$\%$), filament length (1,004 m), reelability (88.4$\%$), raw silk recovery (18.4$\%$) and neatness (92 point) over the control hybrid APS$_{9}$$\times$ APS$_{8}$ The breeding process and identification of APS$_{83}$$\times$ APS$_{102}$ is discussed in the paper.

An attempt was made to identify superior bivoltine silkworm hybrid suitable for monsoon and spring season of Uttar Pradesh. Breeds with superior cocoon characters and their more popularity in an area were major parameters on basis of which breeds from different regions were selected. Six bivoltine hybrids of silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) of different geographical regions were reared in monsoon (three hybrids) and spring season (three hybrids) during 2000-2002 i.e., for three years at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow. Their performances were analyzed statistically for nine characters. The analysis made on a number of traits viz., hatching percentage, larval duration, pupation rate, yield /10000 larvae (by no.), yield /10000 larvae (by weight), cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, cocoon shell ratio, showed the superiority of one bivoltine hybrid out of the three bivoltine hybrids studied in each season. $SH6{\times}{NB_4}{D_2}$ was found to be superior in major cocoon parameters in both the seasons i.e., monsoon and spring season of Uttar Pradesh.

Manifestation of heterotic genetic interaction was studied in different hybrids made between multivoltine recurrent backcross (RBL)/congenic lines (Con. L) during unfavourable season when temperature and relative humidity are > $30^{\circ}C$ and 86%, respectively. A few number of silkworm race or strain or breed like Nistari (N + p or Np) can sustain the temperature above 3$0^{\circ}C$ and RH above 86%. The present heterosis study screened a hybrid i.e., CB$_{5}$Lm5RBL1M$_{6}$DPC-LmE$^1$RBL and its reciprocal provided heterobeltiotic effect on survival by number and pupation rate at a magnitude of 20% (p < 0.01) and yield by weight of 10% (p < 0.01). Beside all the hybrids expressed heterosis over check - Nistari (N + p) with better quality silk. Therefore, aforesaid hybrid may be useful for utilization at commercial level during adverse seasons of West Bengal.gal.
Several selected rice varieties Tong-il (Suweon #213-1), Jinheung, IR747, Suweon #229 and so forth were evaluated for their resistance to the striped rice borer, Cltilo suppressalis Walker. The resistance appears to be non-preference and antibiosis in nature. Under laboratory and greenhouse conditions, resistance to striped rice borer was manifested by the low larval weight, percentage of pupation and number of eggs recorded. In the cage test, varieties Suweon #240 and Shenshuraku appeared to be non-preferred by the borer moths for oviposition. Under field condition, variety Tetep received the lowest percentage of infested tillers.
The local distribution and life cycle of Mahasma aurea (Butler) attacking Ginkgo biloba L. in Seoul and Incheon areas were studied during 1994 - 1996. The species had one generation a year. The overwintered 3rd larvae begin to feed on buds of the host plant from mid May and then on the leaves until early June. Newly hatched larvae mostly infested the leaves from mid August to late September. Pupation took place from mid June to early July, and the moths emerged in early July.
This study created the running water (Bandibooliwon) and lentic water (Sooryunwon) artificial habitats of Luciola lateralis in Hwadamsup, Gwangju-si, Gyunggi-do from April 2014 to February 2016. Through various habitat types, metapopulation was formed, and more sound population was induced to be maintained via interactions between habitats. We investigated coenosite at the habitat creation-target site, and 20 species in the lentic water site and 38 species in running water site were found. After releasing L. lateralis, we checked the status of settlement of L. lateralis larvae through traps and macroscopy, controlled the flow velocity of the habitats in line with the life cycle of L. lateralis (hatching, larva period, landing, pupation, copulation, and oviposition), and shaped gentle slope at water side, and planted moss. We artificially supplied melanian snails (Semisulcospira sp.), the food source, in the running water site and induced stable feeding. Also, We created artificial insectary, bred larvae stably in winter, and secured firefly population for a festival. Through night time observation, the time most suitable for a festival was confirmed to be from 20:30 to 22:00.
Seasonal occurrence in each stages of rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, was studied in paddy field transplanted on May 25, Siehung, 1989. The peak of overwintered adults was late May an that of newly emerged adults was early August. Oviposition occurred in late May and late June and its peak was observed on early June. Larvae were observed from early June to early August and pupation occurred from early July to late August. The first adults of newly emerged rice water weevil was observed on early July and its emergence peak was early August.

Breeding programme was initiated during November, 1995 with the main objective to breed productive multivoltine breeds/ hybrids with suitable genetic constitution to suit the fluctuating tropical climate prevailed in India. Two multivoltine breeds viz., BL-24 and BL-27 selected were as breeding resource materials from the silkworm germplasm maintained at Central Sericul-tural Research and Training Institute, Mysore. By adopting hybridization, backcrossing inbreeding and selection, a new multivoltine breed namely BL-67. This breed spins light greenish yellow cocoons and cocoon shape is oval with medium to coarse grains. The evolved breed was crossed with five tropical bivoltine breeds viz., NB4D2, CSR2, CSR5, CSR18 and CSR101 to study the combining ability, and identified a superior hybrid, BL67 ${\times}$ CSR101, named as CAUVERY, The hybrid is characterized by high pupation rate (>95%), high shell weight (> 35 cg), high cocoon shell ratio (> 20%), longer filament length (> 900 m) and high neatness (93) with a renditta of 6.5 producing 2A-3A grade silk. The hybrid is selected for Race Autho-rization test of Central Silk Board.

Combining ability and hybrid vigour analysis was carried out in hybrids between newly developed non-susceptible lines to BmDNV1 and popular bivoltine breeds for certain quantitative traits viz. Pupation rate, Cocoon yield, Cocoon weight, Cocoon shell weight and Cocoon shell ratio, Survival rate against BmIFV and BmNPV. General combining ability (GCA) effects revealed that among the lines CSR2DR was found good general combiner exhibiting significant GCA effects for six characters, out of seven traits evaluated. Among testers CSR28DR was found as good combiner exhibiting significant GCA effects for six traits. Out of 36 hybrids made between $resistant{\times}resistant,\;resistant{\times}susceptible\;and\;susceptible{\times}susceptible$ breeds, one hybrid $CSR21DR{\times}CSR28DR$ exhibited significant SCA effects for six traits. The selected hybrid $CSR21DR{\times}CSR28DR$ also exhibited significant positive heterosis and heterobeltiosis expressions for maximum traits and could be exploited as commercial silkworm hybrid resistant to important viral diseases.
