A new rock brittleness index on the basis of punch penetration test data

  • Brittleness is one of the most important properties of rock which has a major impact not only on the failure process of intact rock but also on the response of rock mass to tunneling and mining projects. Due to the lack of a universally accepted definition of rock brittleness, a wide range of methods, including direct and indirect methods, have been developed for its measurement. Measuring rock brittleness by direct methods requires special equipment which may lead to financial inconveniences and is usually unavailable in most of rock mechanic laboratories. Accordingly, this study aimed to develop a new strength-based index for predicting rock brittleness based on the obtained base form. To this end, an innovative algorithm was developed in Matlab environment. The utilized algorithm finds the optimal index based on the open access dataset including the results of punch penetration test (PPT), uniaxial compressive and Brazilian tensile strength. Validation of proposed index was checked by the coefficient of determination (R2), the root mean square error (RMSE), and also the variance for account (VAF). The results indicated that among the different brittleness indices, the suggested equation is the most accurate one, since it has the optimal R2, RMSE and VAF as 0.912, 3.47 and 89.8%, respectively. It could finally be concluded that, using the proposed brittleness index, rock brittleness can be reliably predicted with a high level of accuracy.

  • The small punch creep (SPC) test has recently received much attention as a new alternative to the conventional uniaxial creep test because it needs only a miniature-sized specimen directly detached from an operating system or component without any serious sampling damages. However, it is difficult to obtain the equivalent uniaxial creep data directly from the SPC data. As a specimen is deformed by a punch in the SPC test, the test result is sensitive to the friction between them. Finite element analyses with various friction coefficients was performed and showed a tendency of increased SPC life with an increased friction coefficient. The necking position predicted by the SPC simulation with a proper friction coefficient showed good agreement with that observed from the real SPC test. Finally, a noble method to convert the SPC load and displacement rate into the equivalent uniaxial creep stress and strain rate, respectively, was established in this study.

  • This paper investigates the influence of aging time on creep properties via a small punch creep test and evaluates the microstructural change of P122 steel at $600^{\circ}C$. The area fraction of precipitates was quantitatively analyzed to identify the relationship between the creep rupture life and precipitates was coarsening behavior of precipitates along the grain boundaries was also investigated for various aging times. It is found that this coarsening behavior led to a loss of solution hardening and rewulte in a hardness drop and a reduction of creep life.

순 티탄늄 판재의 프레스 성형성 평가(제 1보) (Evaluation of press formability of pure titanium sheet)

  • 본 논문에서는 판형 열교환기 등에 널리 이용되고 있는 순 티타늄 판재의 프레스 성형성을 평가하기 위해 인장실험을 수행하였고 인장실험결과를 가장 잘 피팅할 수 있는 가공경화 모델을 제안하였다. 또한 항복곡면의 도출을 위해 단축변형, 평면변형, 순수전단변형 등 다양한 변형모드 하에서의 인장실험을 실시하였다. 이 제안된 모델을 Hora의 수정된 최대하중조건식에 적용하여 프레스 성형성을 평가하기 위해서 널리 사용되고 있는 성형한계선을 예측하였고 그 결과를 장출성형실험에서 구한 성형한계선과 비교하였다. 도출한 항복곡면을 잘 묘사하기 위한 이방성 항복조건식과 본 연구에서 제안된 가공경화 모델은 순 티타늄 판재의 프레스 성형성의 척도인 성형한계선을 잘 예측함을 알 수 있었다.

Zr-2.5Nb 합금의 크리프 물성 측정을 위한 SP 크리프 시험의 적용성에 대한 연구 (A Study on Applicability of SP Creep Testing for Measurement of Creep Properties of Zr-2.5Nb Alloy)

  • The pressure tubes made of cold-worked Zr-2.5Nb alloy are subjected to creep deformation during service period resulting in changes to their geometry such as longitudinal elongation, diameter increase and sagging. To evaluate integrity of them, information on the material creep property of the serviced tubes is essential. As one of the methods with which the creep property is directly measured from the serviced components, small punch(SP) creep testing has been considered as a substitute for the conventional uniaxial creep testing. In this study, applicability of the SP creep testing to Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube alloy was studied particularly by measuring the power law creep constants, A, n. The SP creep test has been successfully applied fur other high temperature materials which have isotropic behavior. Since the Zr-2.5Nb alloy has anisotropic property, applicability of the SP creep testing can be limited. Uniaxial creep tests and small punch creep tests were conducted with Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube alloy along with finite element analyses. Creep constants obtained by each test method are compared. It was argued that the SP creep test result gave results reflecting material properties of both directions. But the equations derived in the previous study for isotropic materials need to be modified. Discussions were made fur future research directions for application of the SP creep testing to Zr-2.5Nb tube alloy.

  • This paper describes the high temperature creep characteristics for virgin material of 9Cr1MoVNb steel using small punch creep(SP-Creep) test technique which is developing recently. In addition, the several results of SP-Creep test are compared with that of 2.25Cr- 1Mo steel which is widely used as boiler materials and that of conventional uniaxial creep test. The obtained SP-Creep curves show the creep behaviors of three regimes like that obtained from conventional uniaxial creep test, and SP-Creep properties are definitely depended on applied load and test temperature. The correlation of SP-Creep rate and creep rupture life with applied load has been determined like the correlation between creep rate/rupture life and stress in uniaxial creep test, and also is satisfied with Power law. The creep rupture times of newly 9Cr1MoVNb steel are higher than those of 2.25Cr1Mo steel at the same creep temperature and applied loading condition, and the decrease extent of creep rupture life with loads is very lower compared with 2.25Cr1Mo steel.

수소장입시킨 590 MPa DP강의 표면층 물성변화에 관한 수소의 영향 (The Effect of Hydrogen on the Variation of Properties at the Surface Layers of 590 MPa DP Steels Charged with Hydrogen)

  • It was investigated that the effects of hydrogen charging on the properties of 590 MPa Dual Phase(DP) steels at the surface layers. The hydrogen-charging time was changed from 5 to 50 hours and current densities from 100, 150, and 200 $mA/cm^2$, respectively. It was found that the hydrogen content in the specimen was increased with as the charging time and the current density. The microvickers hardness of the subsurface zone was increased from 215.3 HV to 239.5 HV due to the increase in current density and charging time. The comparison of the absorbed energies tested by a small-punch (SP) test showed that the absorbed energy of the specimen was greatly reduced from 436 to 283 $kgf-mm^2$ because of hydrogen embrittlement. It was confirmed that bulb aspects of fracture surface became more brittle with increasing hydrogen content.

순 티타늄 판재의 변형 특성 및 성형성 평가 (A Study on Plastic Deformation Characteristics and Formability for Pure Titanium Sheet)

  • In this paper, tensile test was performed on pure titanium sheet (CP Ti sheet) with HCP structure in each direction to evaluate mechanical and surface properties and analyze microstructural changes during plastic deformation. We also evaluated forming limits of Ti direction in dome-type punch stretching test using a non-contact three-dimensional optical measurement system. As a result, it was revealed the pure titanium sheet has strong anisotropic property in yield stress, stress-strain curve and anisotropy coefficient according to direction. It was revealed that twinning occurred when the pure titanium sheet was plastic deformed, and tendency depends differently on direction and deformation mode. Moreover, this seems to affect the physical properties and deformation of the material. In addition, it was revealed the pure titanium sheet had different surface roughness changes in 0 degree direction and 90 degree direction due to large difference of anisotropy, and this affects the forming limit. It was revealed the forming limit of each direction obtained through the punch stretching test gave higher value in 90 degree direction compared with forming limit in 0 degree direction.

  • Recently, there have been increased mush concerns about repair and rehabilitation works for aged concrete structures to keep up with rapid economic growth in Korea since the early 1970's. In particular, it is believed in these days that there are significantly increasing number of aged concrete bridge slabs, which are strongly needed to construct and rehabilitate by innovative construction method. The objective of this research is to develop the new construction method of concrete slab in bridge structure, which can contribute to minimize the traffic congestion during the repair and rehabilitation works of aged concrete slab, and can also sufficiently assure the quality through the minimization of in-situ works at the site. I-beams with punch holes, which are substituted instead of main reinforcing steels in concrete slabs, will be manufactured in accordance with the specification in the factory, and will be preassembled into the panel. After erecting the preassembled panels in the site, concrete will be poured into the slab panel. This test is to investigate physical properties of I-Beam with punch holes itself, and then to investigate structural properties of assembled I-Beam panels through static and fatigue test, of which can be utilized for the development of new construction method of concrete slab in bridge structure.

  • Recently, there are increasing much concerns about repair and rehabilitation works for aged Concrete Structures which had been constructed on around the 1970's for rapid economic growth in Korea. In particular, it is believed that there are many aged concrete slabs for Highway bridges in these days.
