  • This study was conducted to estimate groundwater reserves within a designated depth. Three methods were applied to one representative county in southern Gyeongsang province, South Korea, to estimate the groundwater reserves in the aquifers. Estimated amounts of groundwater reserves in the region ranged from $20.2{\times}10^9m^3$ to $68.7{\times}10^9m^3$ (average $37.9{\times}10^9m^3$). Groundwater recharge obtained with a recharge ratio of 16.6% was $1.1{\times}10^9m^3/year$. Exploitable groundwater with an assumption of decadal-cycle minimal rainfall of 977.0 mm/year was approximated as 72% ($0.8{\times}10^9m^3/year$) of the total replenished water by recharge. The volume of recharge and exploitable water accounted for only 1.1% and 0.8% of groundwater reserves, respectively, which indicates substantial capacity of the reservoir to supply groundwater in an event of unexpected droughts. Nonetheless, each groundwater well should strictly comply with its allocated pumping rate to avoid alluvial groundwater depletion.

  • Recently, concern has arisen regarding the lowering of groundwater levels in the hinterland caused by the development of high-capacity radial collector wells in riverbank filtration areas. In this study, groundwater levels are estimated using Modflow software in relation to the water volume pumped by the radial collector well in Anseongcheon Stream. Using the water volume data, an artificial neural network (ANN) model is developed to determine the amount of water that can be withdrawn while minimizing the reduction of groundwater level. We estimate that increasing the pumping rate of the horizontal well HW-6, which is drilled parallel to the stream direction, is necessary to minimize the reduction of groundwater levels in wells OW-7 and OB-11. We also note that the number of input data and the classification of training and test data affect the results of the ANN model. This type of approach, which supplements ANN modeling with observed data, should contribute to the future groundwater management of hinterland areas.

  • In seasonal frozen areas with climatic features, which have a temperature difference in the winter and thawing season, changes of mechanical properties of the soil in the zone could be seen between the freezing and thawing surface. In particular, in soil with many fine particles, a softening of the roadbed usually occurs from frost and thawing actions. The lower bearing capacity is a rapidly progressive the softening of roadbed, and occurred a mud-pumping by repeated loading. In this study, the three kind of sandy soil with contents of fine particles were conducted by directly shear box test with the number of cyclic in freeze-thawing and the water content of soil. Subsequently, the relationship between the shear strength and freeze-thaw cycling time was obtained. The shear strength was decreased with the increase of the freeze-thaw cycling time. A shear stress deterioration of the soil with power function modal is proposal.

  • Many urban areas in Korea suffer from repeated flood damage during intensive rainfall due to an increase in impervious areas caused by rapid urbanization and deteriorating sewage systems. A centralized stormwater management system has caused severe flood damage in an area that has proven unable to accommodate recent climate change and a rise in precipitation. Most flooding prevention projects that have been recently implemented focus on increasing drainage system capacity by expanding the size of sewer pipes and adding pumping stations in downstream areas. However, such measures fail to provide sustainable solutions since they cannot solve fundamental problems to reduce surface runoff caused by urbanization across the watershed. A decentralized stormwater management system is needed that can minimize surface runoff and maximize localized retention capacity, while maintaining the existing drainage systems. This study proposes a stormwater management corridor for the flood-prone watershed in the city of Dongducheon. The corridor would connect the upstream, midstream, and downstream zones using various methods for reducing stormwater runoff. The research analyzed surface runoff patterns generated across the watershed using the Modified Rational Method considering the natural topography, land cover, and soil characteristics of each sub-watershed, as well as the urban fabric and land use. The expected effects of the design were verified by the retainable volume of stormwater runoff as based on the design application. The results suggest that an open space network serve as an urban green infrastructure, potentially expanding the functional and scenic values of the landscape. This method is more sustainable and effective than an engineering-based one, and can be applied to sustainable planning and management in flood-prone urban areas.

  • In this study, spatial patterns of the urban flood vulnerability index in Seoul are examined by considering climate exposure, sensitivity, and adaptability associated with floodings for recent 5 year (2006~2010) period by the smallest administrative unit called Dong. According to the results of correlation analyses based on the IPCC(Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)'s vulnerability model, among many variables associated with urban flooding, rainwater tank capacity, 1-day maximum precipitation and flood pumping station capacity have statistically-significant, and relatively-high correlations with the number of flood damage in Seoul. The flood vulnerability map demonstrates that the extensive areas along Anyang and Joongnang streams show relatively high flood vulnerability in Seoul due to high sensitivity. Especially in case of Joongnang stream areas, climatic factors also contribute to the increase of flood vulnerability. At local scales, several Dong areas in Gangdong-gu and Songpa-gu also show high flood vulnerability due to low adaptability, while those in Gangnam-gu do due to high sensibility and climate factor such as extreme rainfall events. These results derived from the flood vulnerability map by Dong unit can be utilized as primary data in establishing the adaptation, management and proactive policies for flooding prevention within the urban areas in more detail.

  • A new type of sand bypassing system is proposed for recovering the eroded beach in this study. This system provides an added methodology to the soft defence which is main recovery method for the coastal shore protection in the world. The study proposes a conceptional design and manufacturing procedure for the relatively small size machine of sand bypassing. In order to get the discharging volume information, the power capacity of the system is tested in the field. The discharge rate of the new system shows up to the expected maximum of 618 ton/hr which is 9.6% lower than that by theoretical calculation. It gives a resonable agreement in this system when the flow is assumed to be of the high density. In this study, the delivering volume of sand is estimated according to the discharge rate. The combination of 300 mm(12 inch) intake and 250 mm(10 inch) discharge pipe line has the pumping capacity of $103\;m^3/hr$ which is nearly the same as that of South Lake Worth Inlet sand bypassing system, Florida, U.S.A.. The proposed system added the mobility to its merit. The unit price of Florida's sand bypassing is $$8~9/m^3$ (US). The system would be economically suitable for small volume of sand because no additional equipment is necessary for the intake. The diesel fuel of 25~30 l/hr was consumed during the system operation. The multiple working system would be the next investigation target for large volume of sand.

  • Recently climate change and increase of surface runoff caused the urban flooding. Traditional way of dealing with urban flooding has been to increase the sewer capacity or construction of pumping stations, however, it is practically almost impossible because of time, money and traffic problems. Multipurpose DRMS (Decentralized Rainwater Management System) is a new paradigm proposed and recommended by NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency) for both flood control and water conservation. Suwon City has already enacted the ordinance on sound water cycle management by DRMS. In this study, a flood prone area in Suwon is selected and analysis of DRMS has been made using XP-SWMM for different scenarios of RT installation with same total rainwater tank volume and location. Installing one rainwater tank of 3,000$m^3$ can reduce the peak flow rate by 15.5%. Installing six rainwater tanks of 500$m^3$ volume in the area can reduce the peak flow rate by 28%. Three tanks which is concentrated in the middle region can reduce peak rate more than evenly distributed tanks. The method and results found from this study can be used for the design and performance prediction of DRMS at a flood prone area by supplementing the existing sewer system without increase of the sewer capacity.

  • Sand dams are structures that can be used as auxiliary water resources in case of drought as sand accumulates due to barriers crossing valley rivers and valley water is stored in the voids, increasing the water level. This structure, which is mainly used in arid regions such as Africa, has not been installed in Korea. In Korea, there are only a few cases where water is taken from debris barriers that prevent debris flow. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of water supply when the sand dam is installed downstream of the existing intake barrier in Seosang-ri valley, Chuncheon. For this purpose, modeling was performed by linking the basin hydrologic model and reservoir routing model. Changes in the water level, storage and discharge in the sand dam reservoir according to the size and intake of the sand dam are presented on a case-by-case basis. As a result of application, it was found that the water supply capacity due to the sand dam installation was improved at 95% reliability. Especially, when the size is L × B × Ho = 25 m × 15 m × 1 m and the pumping rates from intake barrier and sand dam are (Q1, Q2) = (30, 20), (35, 15) ㎥/day, the efficiency was the best for water supply of 50 ㎥/day.

  • Micro-sized Peltier coolers are generally employed for uniformly distributing heat generated in the multi-chip packages. These coolers are commonly classified into vertical and planar devices, depending on the heat flow direction and the arrangement of thermoelectric materials on the used substrate. Owing to the strong need for evaluation of performance of thermoelectric modules, at present an establishment of proper theoretical model has been highly required. The design theory for micro-sized thermoelectric cooler should be considered with contact resistance. Cooling performance of these modules was significantly affected by their contact resistance such as electrical and thermal junction. In this paper, we introduce the useful and optimal design model of small dimension thermoelectric module.

  • The deposition of solids in combined sewer systems results in a loss of flow capacity that may restrict flow and cause a local flooding and enhanced solids deposition. In order to solve these problems and proper pipe management, estimation of solid loads from sewer and surface in a drainage basin is needed but this task is very difficult and extremely expensive. In this study, generalized procedures for estimating sewer solid loads during dry weather in combined sewer systems and for estimating solid loads on surface in a drainage basin developed by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency were applied and analyzed in Gunja drainage basin in Korea. As result, the estimated solid loads from sewer and surface are 205.8,759kg/yr and 1,321,993kg/yr respectively, and total solid loads is 1,527,752kg/yr. The estimated solid removal from street cleaning, dredging from pipe system and pumping house is 1,486,636kg/yr. Therefore, the applied methods show resonable results. More reliable estimation can be achieved if long-term measurements and adjustment of estimation equations are carried out, and this estimation methods can be used usefully for the management of combined sewer system with reduction of cost and effort.
