Assessment of Agricultural Water Supply Capacity Using MODSIM-DSS Coupled with SWAT (SWAT과 MODSIM-DSS 모형을 연계한 금강유역의 농업용수 공급능력 평가)

  • This study is to evaluate agricultural water supply capacity in Geum river basin (9,865 $km^2$), one of the 5 big river basin of South Korea using MODSIM-DSS (MODified SIMyld-Decision Support System) model. The model is a generalized river basin decision support system and network flow model developed at Colorado State University designed specifically to meet the growing demands and pressures on river basin management. The model was established by dividing the basin into 14 subbasins and the irrigation facilities viz. agricultural reservoirs, pumping stations, diversions, culverts and groundwater wells were grouped and networked within each subbasin and networked between subbasins including municipal and industrial water supplies. To prepare the inflows to agricultural reservoirs and multipurpose dams, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was calibrated using 6 years (2005-2010) observed dam inflow and storage data. By MODSIM run for 8 years from 2004 to 2011, the agricultural water shortage had occurred during the drought years of 2006, 2008, and 2009. The agricultural water shortage could be calculated as 282 $10^6m^3$, 286 $10^6m^3$, and 329 $10^6m^3$ respectively.

A Study on the Release of Hatch Cover in Sand Carriers (모래운반선의 창구덮개 면제를 위한 시설기준에 관한 연구)

  • Only the sand carriers fitted with hopper doors can remove their hatch covers in current regulations. However, there is no sand carriers fitted with hopper doors in korea. Through the analysis of accidents, inspection of equipment installed on ships, and evaluation of stability and seakeeping performance concerning the sand carriers, it is expected that the current exemption requirement is modified for hatch covers for sand carriers. As the result, this paper proposed the removal of hatch covers and be fitted by tarpaulin instead to protect water ingress into the holds. This can be done by making the holds smaller designed to be filled full until the top of the hold without exceeding loadline. Also, the bilge pumps should have the sufficient capacity of pumping water out in the early stage of sand-water mixture to wetted condition in approximately 1 hour and be operationally ready in every voyage conditions.

Lifespan Extending Effects of Ligularia stenocephala (곤달비의 수명 연장 효과)

  • Ligularia stenocephala has a wide range of types of constituents with various pharmacological properties. Here in this study, we examined the effect of methanolic extract of L. stenocephala (MLS) on the lifespan and stress tolerance using Caenorhabditis elegans model system. We found that lifespan of wild-type worms was significantly lengthened in the presence of MLS in a dose dependent manner. MLS also elevated the tolerance of worms against osmotic, heat shock, and oxidative stress. We also demonstrated in vivo antioxidant capacity of MLS by checking intracellular reactive oxygen species levels as well as antioxidant enzyme activities such as catalase and superoxide dismutase. We further investigated several aging-related factors, including pharyngeal pumping rate and body length. Here, we showed that MLS exerts longevity effect independent of both factors. In addition, body movement of aged worms was significantly elevated, suggesting MLS could enhance healthspan as well as lifespan.

Residential Humidifying Elements Comprizing Horizontal Corrugated Channels (수평 코류게이트 채널로 구성된 가정용 가습 소자)

  • In this study, new materials and shapes for a residential humidifying element were investigated. These elements could replace the current Japanese folded-type rayon/PE elements. Samples were taken from three different materials - rayon/PET (50:50), kraft/PET (40:60), kraft/PET/carbon. Results showed that the humidification efficiencies of the new samples were lower than those of the Japanese product. The efficiencies were 59% for the Japanese product (rayon/PET), 62% for kraft/PET and 84% for kraft/PET/carbon. This could be due to lower rayon or kraft content in the present samples than that in the Japanese product. However, pressure drops in the present samples were significantly lower than that in the Japanese product, due to improved channel configuration. The humidification capacity at the same pumping power ($j_m/f^{1/3}$) was 60% to 82% higher for the kraft/PET/carbon sample compared with the Japanese product. Furthermore, the results are compared with theoretical predictions.

Bio-regeneration of Ion-exchange Resin for Treating Reverse Osmosis Concentrate (RO 농축폐액의 처리를 위한 이온교환수지의 생물재생)

  • In order to remove both nitrate and sulfate present in the concentrate of RO(reverse osmosis) process, a combined bio-regeneration and ion-exchange(IX) system was studied. For this purpose, both denitrifying bacteria(DNB) and sulfate reducing bacteria(SRB) were simultaneously cultivated in a bio-reactor under anaerobic conditions. When the IX column containing a nitrate-selective A520E resin was fully exhausted by nitrate and sulfate, the IX column was bio-regenerated by pumping the supernatant of the bio-reactor, which contains MLSS concentration of $125{\pm}25mg/L$, at the flowrate of 360 BV/hr. Even though the nitrate-selective A520E resin was used, the breakthrough curves of ionic species showed that sulfate was exhausted earlier than nitrate. The reason for this result is due to the fact that the concentration of sulfate in RO concentrate was 36 to 48 times higher than nitrate. The bio-reactor was successfully operated at a volumetric loading rate of 0.6 g $COD/l{\cdot}d$, nitrate-N loading rate of 0.13 g $NO_3{^-}-N/l{\cdot}d$, and sulfate loading rate of 0.08 g $SO_4{^{2-}}/l{\cdot}d$. The removal rate of SCOD, nitrate-N, sulfate was 90, 100, and 85%, respectively. When the virgin resin was fully exhausted and consecutively bio-regenerated for 2 days, 81% of nitrate and 93% of sulfate were reduced. When the virgin resin was repeatedly used up to 4 cycles of service and bio-regeneration, the ion-exchange capacity of bio-regenerated resin decreased to 95, 91, 88, and 81% of virgin resin.

Performance of HFC32/HFC125 Mixtures for Heat Pumps (HFC32/HFC125 혼합냉매의 히트펌프 성능 평가)

  • In this study, performance of R410A(50%R32/50%R125) and HFC32/HFC125 mixture is measured to examine the effect of composition shift of R410A used for various air-conditioners and heat pumps. The composition of HFC32/HFC125 mixture varies from the reference composition of R410A ${\pm}10%$ with 5% interval. Tests carried out in a heat pump bench tester at the evaporation and condensation temperatures of $7/45^{\circ}C$ and $-7/41^{\circ}C$ for summer and winter conditions, respectively. Test results show that both the coefficient of performance (COP) and compressor power of the HFC32/HFC125 mixture have the maximum difference of 2.0% as compared to those of R410A. Compressor discharge temperatures of HFC32/HFC125 mixture are increased up to $6.7^{\circ}C$ as compared to that of R410A. The amount of charge for HFC32/HFC125 mixture vary within 5.6% as compared to that of R410A. Overall, performance of R410A is not appreciably affected by the composition shift of ${\pm}10%$ of R32 under both air-conditioning and heat pumping conditions.

Development of Rehabilitation and Management Techniques for Old Water Distribution Systems (기존 상수도 노후관망의 개량 및 관리 기법의 개발)

  • Flow carrying capacity of water distribution systems is getting reduced by deterioration of pipes in the systems. The objective of this study is to develop a managerial decision-making model for the rehabilitation of water distribution systems with a minimum cost. The decisions made by the model also satisfy the requirements for the discharge and pressure at demanding nodes in the system. The replacement cost, pipe break repair cost, and pumping cost are considered in the economic evaluation of the decision along with the break ratio and interest ratio to determine the optimal replacement time for each pipe. Then, the hydraulic integrity of the water distribution system is checked for the decision by a pipe network simulator, KYPIPE, if the discharge and pressure requirements, the decision made for the optimal replacement time is revised until the requirements are satisfied. The model is applied to an existing water distribution system, the Metropolita Water Supply Project (1st Phase). The result shows that the decisions for the replacement time determined by the economix analysis are accepted as optimal and the hydraulic integrity of the system is in good condition.

Performance of R290 and R1270 as Alternative Refrigerants of R22 According to Temperature Variations of Evaporator and Condenser (증발기와 응축기 온도변화에 따른 R22 대체냉매 R290 및 R1270의 성능평가)

  • In this study, performance of 2 pure hydrocarbons R290 and R1270 was measured in an attempt to substitute R22 under 3 different temperature conditions. They were tested in a refrigerating bench tester with a hermetic rotary compressor. The test bench provided about 3.5 kW capacity and water and water/glycol mixture were employed as the secondary heat transfer fluids. All tests were conducted under the same external conditions resulting in the average saturation temperatures of $7/45^{\circ}C$ and $-7/41^{\circ}C$ and $-21/28^{\circ}C$ in the evaporator and condenser, respectively. Test results show that the coefficient of performance (COP) of these refrigerants is up to 11.54% higher than that of R22 in all temperature conditions. Compressor discharge temperatures were reduced by $14{\sim}31^{\circ}C$ with these fluids. There was no problem with mineral oil since the mixtures were mainly composed of hydrocarbons. The amount of charge was reduced up to 58% as compared to R22. Overall, these fluids provide good performance with reasonable energy savings without any environmental problem and thus can be used as long term alternatives for residential air-conditioning and heat pumping application.

Analysis of Female Windsurfers' Performance Using Global Positioning System Information During Competitions (여자 윈드서핑 선수의 경기 중 Global Positioning System 정보를 활용한 경기력 분석)

  • Objective: This study aimed to identify the different wind speed categories and competitive level among windsurfers through GPS variables to provide the useful information on the development of training programs for enhancing windsurfers' performance. Method: Data from 69 female athletes who participated in 27 races during the 2018-2019 windsurfing season were used for the analysis. Average board speed, total race time, total distance, upwind race time, downwind race time, beam reach race time were collected through GPS. Unconfirmed data were excluded along with penalty point data. The wind conditions were classified as light, light to medium, medium, medium to heavy, and heavy wind, the competitive levels were classified as level 1, level 2, and level 3. Results: As for the average board speed, the level 1 or level 2 group showed higher board speed than the level 3 group in all wind conditions except for the light wind. The total race time and upwind race time showed less time in level 1 or level 2 group than level 3 group in all wind conditions. The total distance, downwind race time and beam reach race time showed less distance and time in level1 group than level 3 group under sufficient wind conditions. Conclusion: Our results show that the aerobic capacity to sustain pumping during upwind course in wind conditions below 15 kts effects performance. In wind conditions of 15 kts or more, indicated that the board control for the fast board speed and small distance required during up, down, beam reach courses had an effect on competition performance. This information can be provided to windsurfers and coaching as basic data for training programs to improve performance.
