Three-dimensional steady and pulsatile flow experiments and numerical simulations have conducted to investigate the flow characteristics in the aortic bifurcation model. In vitro velocity measurements were made using both laser Doppler anemometry and pulsed Doppler ultrasound velocimetry. In this study, flow phenomena in the aortic bifurcation model are discussed extensively and the numerical results are compared with experimental results.
The present paper addresses magnetohydrodynamic pulsating flow and heat transfer of two immiscible, incompressible, and conducting couple stress fluids between two permeable beds. The flow between the permeable beds is assumed to be governed by Stokes' [28] couple stress fluid flow equations, whereas the dynamics of permeable beds is determined by Darcy's law. In this study, matching conditions were used at the fluid-fluid interface, whereas the B-J slip boundary condition was employed at the fluid-porous interface. The governing equations were solved analytically, and the expressions for velocity, temperature, mass flux, skin friction, and rate of heat transfer were obtained. The analytical expressions were numerically evaluated, and the results are presented through graphs and tables.

The ventricular assist device(VAD) helps to reduce the overload against the patient's native heart(NH). The pulsatile VAD pumps out the ventricular blood to the aorta with pulsatile flow. If the VAD pulsates simultaneously with the NH, the ventricle of the NH could confronts abnormally elevated aortic pressure, and this could deteriorate the ventricle rather than assist to recover it. Thus counterpulsation algorithms to avoid copulsation have been adopted by many VADs, but these methods utilize electrocardiography or arterial pressure signals, which may have difficulties to acquire consistently for a long period. In this study, the copulsation estimation algorithm for the counterpulsation is developed using the VAD outlet pressure signal. The VAD outlet pressure signal is good to maintain for a long time and the sensor part could be integrated to the VAD as a built-in module. From the VAD outlet pressure signal and its pump rate information calculated with Fast Fourier Transform, pulse peaks by the VAD and the NH were extracted and the next copulsation time at which the VAD and the NH would pulsate simultaneously was estimated. This estimation algorithm was implemented by using PC MATLAB software and tested for various pump rate conditions with mock circulation system. For each condition, the copulsation time was estimated successfully. Consequently, the results showed the possibility to use the outlet cannula pressure signal in the copulsation estimation.

Three-dimensional models of stenosis blood vessels were prepared using a 3D printer. The models included a straight pipe with axisymmetric stenosis and a pipe that was bent $10^{\circ}$ from the center of stenosis. A refractive index matching method was utilized to measure accurate velocity fields inside the 3D tubes. Three different pulsatile flows were generated and controlled by changing the rotational speed frequency of the peristaltic pump. Unsteady velocity fields were measured by a time-resolved particle image velocimetry method. Periodic shedding of vortices occurred and moves depended on the maximum velocity region. The sizes and the positions of the vortices and symmetry are influenced by mean Reynolds number and tube geometry. In the case of the bent pipe, a recirculation zone observed at the post-stenosis could explain the possibility of blood clot formation and blood clot adhesion in view of hemodynamics.

The use of a ventricular assist device (VAD) can raise the one-year survival rate without cardiac transplantation from 25% to 52%. However, malfunction of the VAD system causes 6% of VAD patients' deaths, which could possibly be avoided through the development of new VADs in which VAD malfunctions do not affect the patient's heart movement or hemodynamic state. A conventional VAD has an impeller or vane for propelling blood that can allow blood to regurgitate when the propelling force is weaker than the aortic pressure. In this paper, we developed a new pulsatile conduit-shaped VAD that has two valves. This device removes the possibility of blood regurgitation and has a small stationary area even when the pumping force is extremely weak. We estimated the characteristics of the device by measuring the outflow and the pressure of the pump in in-vitro and in-vivo experiments.

A Ventricular assist device (VAD) is one of the most efficient treatments to raise the survivability of the end stage heart failure patient. However, some of LVAD patients have died for the failures and improper control of LVAD. To detect critical dangers in LVAD, the monitoring methods of LVAD outflow have been requested, because it can be affected by patient's hemodynamic states and abnormal conditions of LVAD. In the case of an external pulsatile LVAD, the air movement through the air line can be used to estimate LVAD outflow. In this study, the air movement in the air-line of the extracorporeal pulsatile LVAD was measured with a differential pressure sensor between different points. The precise estimation of air movement could be achieved by additional measurement of air pressure. In a series of in-vitro experiments, the LVAD outflow were changed according to the afterload of LVAD and the differential pressure of LVAD didn't have close correlation with the LVAD outflow that were measured with an ultrasonic flowmeter at the same time. However, new precise estimation with the data from differential pressure and one point pressure in the air-line showed higher correlations with LVAD outflow.
The aim of this study is to apply engineering modeling tools to examine hemodynamics such as blood flow patterns or shear stress distributions, in order to determine the link between hemodynamics and cerebral aneurysms. Image-Based Simulation is used to analyze the realistic middle cerebral artery constructed from computed tomography raw data. As a result of simulation, high wall shear stress is appeared at the bifurcated region. And existence of the recirculation flow at the inlet of bifurcation($D_2$) is predict to affect at the development of the cerebral aneurysm.
Wall shear rate or stress is believed to be a major hemodynamic variable influencing atherosclerosis and artery-graft anastomic intimal hyperplasia. The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of radial wall motion, artery-graft compliance and diameter mismatch, and impedance phase angle on the wall shear rate distribution near an end-to-end artery-graft anastomosis model. The results show that radial wall motion of the elastic artery model lowers the mean wall shear rates under pulsatile flow condition by 15 to 20 % comparing to those under steady flow condition at the same mean flow rate. Impedance phase angle seems to have small effects on the mean and amplitude of the wall shear rate distribution. In order to study the effects of compliance and diameter mismatch on the wall shear rates, two models are studied-Model I has 6% and Model I has 6% and Model II has 11% smaller graft diameter. Divergent geometry caused by diameter mismatch near the distal sites reduces the mean wall shear rates significantly, and this low shear region is believed to be prone to intimal hyperplasia.
The two-dimensional unsteady incompressible viscous flow behind rectangular bluff bodies between two parallel plates was analyzed numerically. The steady state flow and the vortex flow behind rectangular bluff bodies in the channel were investigated for two regimes i.e., the laminar(Re = 100, 300, 500) and the turbulent flows(Re = 10⁴∼10/sup 6/). The vortex shedding was generated by a physical disturbance(6%) numerically imposed at the rear of the bluff bodies for a short time. It was observed that the perturbed flow became periodic after a transient period. And in the case of unsteady inflow, the sinusoidal pulsatile flow was applied as the inlet condition in the turbulent flow of Reynolds number of 1.0×10/sup 5/. FLUENT code was employed to solve the problems. The power-law scheme was used to get stable linearized equations and the PISO algorithm was applied to finding the solution of them.
The flow characteristics of developing unsteady laminar flow in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct are experimentally investigated by using laser doppler velocimerty (LDV) system with data acquisition and processing system of rotating machinery resolver(RMR) and PHASE software. The major flow characteristics of developing laminar pulsating flows are presented by mean velocity profilel velocity distribution of secondary flow, wall shear stress distributions, entrance lengths according to dimensionless angular frequency($\omega^+$), velocity amplitude ratio($A^1$), and time-averaged Dean number($De_ta$). The velocity profiles and wall shear stress distribution of laminar pulsating flow with dimensionlessangular frequency show the flow characteristics of the quasi-steady laminar flow in a curved duct. The developing region of laminar pulsatile flows in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct is extended to the curved duct angle of approximately $120^{\circ}$ under the present experimental condition.
