  • Caro's acid (persulphuric acid) has been proposed as a promising reagent used in pulping of lignocellu-losic materials. Bagass was subjected to caro's acid pulping under different pulping conditions of per acid concentration (2~8 percent), pulping temperatures (40~$60^{\circ}C$) and pulping time (120~240 min). The influence of different parameters of caro's acid pulping process on the chemical and strength properties of the produced pulps had been studied. Peracid concentration and pulping temperature are the most important variables of the pulping process. High degree of delignification and good deliberation were achieved at moderate pulping conditions in the studied range. Pulping experiments of bagasse by using caro's acid had been carried out for determination of the optimum comditions of the process. In inch case to effectively tackle the problem, a specific design of an experiment is selected depending on the goals to be achieved in the experimentation. The study could enable us to excepect the bagasse pulp properties (yield, Kappa number, DP) that be stated as function of the independent variables of caro's acid pulping process (per acid concentration, pulping temperature and pulping time).

  • The rice husk is one of the major agricultural residue in KOREA. In this paper, the effects of various pulping conditions on the properties of rice husk pulp and handsheets made of rice husk fiber were evaluated in order to utilize the rice husk as an alternative source for wood pulp. Two typical alkali pulping, such as soda pulping and Kraft pulping were applied with various conditions of the pulping processes. The higher effective alkali and higher pulping temperature resulted in the higher efficiency in removal of lignin and ash, which leaded to the higher strength properties of handsheets made of rice husk fiber, but the lower yield of rice husk pulp. The better efficiency in production of rice husk pulp and the stronger handsheets were obtained by the Kraft pulping.

  • In general, the entire of paper mulberry bark, which is not cut into pieces with an appropriate length, have been used in the pulping. This kind of pulping method couldn't accomplish the improvement of beating and sheet forming efficiency. For this reason, we investigated the effects of the cutting length of paper mulberry bast fiber on pulping and Hanji (Korean traditional paper) properties, in order to develop high quality Hanji manufacturing process. The cutting length variation of paper mulberry white bast did not great effects on pulp yields. The pulp yields based on pulping methods were sulfomethylated pulping av. 57.4%, alkali-hydrogen peroxide pulping av. 55.4%, and alkaline pulping av. 53.5% respectively. The optical properties such as brightness, opacity, scattering coefficient, and absorption coefficient were slightly improved by the increase of paper mulberry white bast cutting length. The increase of paper mulberry white bast cutting length resulted in poor sheet formation. Physical properties such as breaking length, TEA, tear index, burst index, and folding endurance were slightly improved by the increase of cutting length. The modified pulping processes, which used sulfomethylated method and alkali-hydrogen peroxide method, showed better pulp and sheet properties than conventional alkaline pulping.

  • Variations in hexeneuronic acid content in hardwood alkaline pulps were investigated to evaluate their contribution to kappa number. Out of diverse chemical pulps the highest hexeneuronic acid content were measured in yellow poplar kraft pulping, which was assumed to enhance ca. 7.0 of kappa number determined by acid permanganate consumption. In yellow poplar soda-anthraquinone pulping, hexeneuornic acid was contributed to increment of 5.0-6.0 kappa number. In eucalyptus alkaline pulping, hexeneuronic acid content was not significantly different from soda-anthraquinone pulping. Increment of Kappa number by hexeneuronic acid was 4.5-5.6 depending on pulping method and pulping time at target temperature.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the pulping and papermaking characteristics of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera G.) leafstalk for the development of high performance paper. Anatomical and chemical properties of the lotus leafstalk were analyzed. The pulping and papermaking properties of the lotus leafstalk by conventional alkali and sulfomethylated pulping processes were also evaluated. The length and width of fibers were 0.06-3.32 mm (av. 1.23 mm) and 3.47-25.6 ${\mu}m$ (av. 20.7 ${\mu}m$), respectively. The length and width of vessel elements were 0.07-0.78 mm (av. 0.20 mm) and 14.1-330.0 ${\mu}m$ (av. 54.13 ${\mu}m$), respectively. The fiber length/fiber width ratio was 60.20. The extractives (cold water, hot water, 1% NaOH and ethanol-benzene) and lignin content of lotus leafstalk were higher than those of plant bast fiber. The contents of holocellulose, lignin, and ash were 73.8%, 24.3%, and 4.3%, respectively. The pulp yields based on pulping methods were sulfomethylated pulping av. 52%, and alkaline pulping av. 42%. The conventional alkaline pulping shows better pulp and sheet properties than the sulfomethylated pulping which was modified pulping processes. But the sulfomethylated pulping shows higher brightness than alkali pulping. In the consequence of FE-SEM observation, lotus leafstalk pulp consists of various kinds of thin walled fibers which have large amount of small pits.

  • Soda and kraft pulping experiments were carried out in order to investigate the pulping characteristics of bamboo grown in Vietnam. The merit of kraft pulping was not observed for bamboo pulping from the viewpoint of delignification and screened pulp yield. The improvements of delignification during soda and kraft pulping of bamboo were observed by the addition of AQ. The bamboo pulp leaded the bulkier structure than those made from SwBKP and HwBKP. The average fiber length was 1.62mm which is shorter than those of SwBKP, but longer than those of HwBKP. It was found that the physical properties of bamboo pulp sheet could be varied by the pulping method, cooking condition, AQ addition, bleaching and refining etc.

  • Linerboards have been produced by recycling recovered paper such as old corrugated containers(OCC). Usually linerboards produced during summer season show weak strength compared with those of produced during winter. In order to cope with the weak strength of linerboards produced during summer, and to confirm uniform quality, it is important to understand the seasonal effect on strength properties. Effect of pulping temperature of the OCC for linearboard production was investigated by controlling pulping temperatures at $18^{\circ}C$ and $51^{\circ}C$. Low pulping temperature ($18^{\circ}C$) caused more generation of fines in stock. Consequently retention and drainage of linerboard defibrated at high pulping temperature ($51^{\circ}C$) were better than those of $18^{\circ}C$. Strength properties of handsheet at low pulping temperature were higher than those of high pulping temperature and it could be confirmed that low pulping temperature during winter is one reason of seasonal variation of recycled linerboard strength. It is considered that surface modification of OCC fibers by harsh pulping action during winter caused increase of paper strength.

  • The pulping process in a papermaking process for a reconstituted tobacco sheet (RECON) was evaluated. For the practical information, the experiments were conducted in a real mill. Two pulping conditions were chosen and changed depending on the feasibility, such as the pulping temperature and the properties of pulping water. The higher pulping temperature resulted in the easier dissolution of solubles from the raw materials. However, the efficiency of screw press process was decreased by the higher pulping temperature, which resulted in the reduction of the HWS and the concentration in the #1 screw press filtrate. The addition of SEL(Strong extracted liquor) to pulper affected the efficiency of dissolution and the final concentration of #1 screw press filtrate. Although the higher SEL resulted in the less dissolution of the solubles from the raw materials, the concentration of the #1 screw press filtrate was greatly increased by the higher addition of SEL, which could provide much better efficiency to the following evaporation process of the filtrate and could increase the whole productivity.

  • Organosolv ethanolamine pulping for oil palm empty fruit bunches(EFB) were evaluated in this study. The screen yield by the ethanolamine pulping were higher than that by the soda pulping at the same operation conditions. The higher concentration of ethanolamine solvent resulted in the higher yield and the lower contents of residual lignin. The EFB pulp fibers were the narrower in fiber width but the higher in coarseness than those of the hardwood pulp fiber, while the fiber length of the EFB pulp fiber were similar to that of the hardwood fiber. The intrinsic zero span tensile testing showed the EFB pulp fiber by the 80% ethanolamine pulping were the stronger than the fiber by the soda pulping. The results of this study supported that the ethanolamine pulping could be used as an alternative pulping method for the EFB.

  • The traditional Hanji-making was confronted with lots of industrial disadvantages and economic problems, due to the original hand-made process. Recently, the studies on the automation of overall Hanji manufacturing process is carried out by applying the commercial chemical pulping method in order to expand industrial application or efficiency of non-wood fibrous materials. However, the application of commercial pulping methods to the bast tissues of paper mulberry leads to the chemical and mechanical deterioration of cellulosic fibers. In this study, the optimal cooking method using the bast parts of paper mulberry produced by an auto-scraping device was applied to minimize the damage of fiber strength for the paper yarn manufacture. The pre-steaming treatment and alkaline pulping systems were evaluated in removal efficiency of lignin and pectin materials within the bast tissue of paper mulberry. With the application of pre-steaming treatment and 2 stage pulping system using potassium carbonate and then sodium hydroxide, kappa values were decreased two times more in lignin removal than the single stage of pulping method. It was also identified from SEM images and ATR-FTIR spectra that the pectin components within cellular structure of bast tissue were easily removed and the debarked bast parts by a auto-scraping device were easily defiberized by 2-stage pulping sequence using potassium carbonate/sodium hydroxide pulping system.
