Whole, bast and core fibers of kenaf cultivar Tainung-2 were pulped under different pulping methods, thermomechanical and kraft pulping methods. The physical and optical properties of kenaf TMP(thermomechanical pulp) and KP(kraft pulp) handsheets were investigated and the results from the study are summarized as follows: Yields of TMP and KP were $77{\sim}87%\;and\;43{\sim}52%$, respectively. There was no significant change in apparent density between kenaf KP and USKP(unbleached softwood kraft pulp) but TMP showed a little lower apparent density. Bast pulp had the lowest apparent density regardless of pulping methods. Tensile strength of kenaf KP was higher than that of TMP but similar to that of USKP. Both TMP and KP handsheets of bast fraction showed the highest tear strengths among whole, bast, and core fractions. Core fraction showed the lowest tear strengths under different pulping methods. In general burst strength of kenaf pulp under different pulping methods was lower than that of USKP, and kenaf pulp had better stiffness than USKP. Brightness of kenaf KP and TMP was higher than that of USKP. There was no significant variation in opacity between kenaf pulp and USKP even though kenaf pulp showed a little lower opacity. The main difference in paper quality between the core fiber and bast fiber is derived from the fact that bast fiber is long and thin, whereas core fiber is short and thick.
The objective of this study was to investigate quality attributes of beef patties formulated with dried pumpkin pulp and seed mixture (PM). Four different meatball formulations were prepared where lean was replaced with PM as C (0% PM), P2 (2% PM), P3 (3% PM) and P5 (5% PM). Utilization of PM decreased moisture and increased ash content of the patties. Incorporation of 5% PM (P5) increased the pH value of both uncooked and cooked patties compared to C group. Increasing levels of PM increased water-holding capacity. No significant differences were found in cooking yield and diameter change with the addition of PM. Incorporation of PM increased fat and decreased moisture retention of the samples. $a^*$ values were decreased with PM addition, where $L^*$ values did not differ among treatments and $b^*$ values were similar in C, P3 and P5 samples. Textural properties were mostly equivalent to control samples with the incorporation of PM even at higher concentrations. The addition of PM did not significantly affect any of the sensory scores tested. These results indicated that utilization of PM presents the opportunity to decrease the amount of meat besides to improve healthier profile without causing negative changes in physical, chemical and technological quality of beef patties.
The print quality of a ink jet printer is generally affected by three major components of the printing process: printer, ink formulation, and paper. The result of this study indicated that the surface sized paper with oxidized starch and cationic starch differed ink jet print quality in terms of ink spread and black optical density of the print image. Paper properties, like air permeability and siting degree, which may influence the ink jet printing were also measured. It was found that black print quality was controlled by starch level and ionic charge on the paper surface. Cationic surface sizing starch improved black ink jet print quality.
The base paper of corrugated board is mainly produced from Korean old corrugated container (KOCC), and thus the recycling rate of KOCC is very high. However, there is a problem that the pulp quality is very low while the recycling rate of OCC is high. The fines content in KOCC, the main source of the corrugated board, amounts to nearly the half of the total stock, and its formation increases as recycling process repeats due to the hornification of fiber. There have been attempts to improve the drainage property of OCC by increasing the headbox concentration of the paper machine or by applying drainage-promoting polymer additives. However, these conventional methods have problems of weakened paper strength and lowered converting fitness caused by paper formation hindrance. The strength of linerboard could not be increased in case KOCC is used, because hornified OCC pulp can-not be sufficiently refined due to the lowered drainage property caused by fines formation. We studied about a new technique consisting of froth-flotation for fractionating pulp stock into a long fiber portion and fines fraction. This study will be developed in order to enhance the drainage and strength properties of a recycled OCC pulp by selective treatment of flocculant on fractionated OCC Fines.
The spent liquor (BSL) obtained from alkaline sulfite-anthraquinone (AS-AQ) cooking of pine bark was applied as a deinking agent. In the ONP deinking system, although BSL removed the small size of ink particles (${\geq}$$12.5{\mu}m$), it did not improve the brightness of pulp. The brightness of pulp slightly improved when treated with BSL at 150~$180^{\circ}C$. However, the brightness of the pulp was lower than that of a commercial deinking agent (oleic acid). It seems that BSL treated with a high temperature still had a high dispersing ability on the ink particles. Intensive oxidations were introduced, and remarkable deinking effects were observed at 13kgf/$cm^2$ oxygen pressure, $160^{\circ}C$ and 2h. When BSL treated at 13kgf/$cm^2$ oxygen pressure, $170^{\circ}C$ and a time period of 30~90 min is added to the pulp, at 0.1% or lower, the deinking effect became higher than that of oleic acid. On the other hand, additional alkali treatments during the oxidation possibility as a deinking agent when oxidized. However, since the oxidized BSL still has a high dispersing ability and lower molecular weight, several modifications need to be done in the near future in order to be applied as a high quality deinking agent.
Nippon Paper Industries, Co., Ltd. declared conversion of all the bleaching process to ECF, and most of the production had converted by now. To reduce ECF bleaching cost, we found that depending on electricity supply condition of the mill, utilization of ozone bleaching could be very effective. In addition, hot acid treatment of unbleached pulp also seemed to be effective for hardwood. In this study, several conditions for each technology were examined with the pulps from our own mills to reduce bleaching cost and to keep fiber quality acceptable level. In hot acid treatment study, with mild conditions (temperature lower than $90^{\circ}C$), sufficient reduction in Kappa number and hexenuronic acids content of the pulp were observed, while pulp viscosity was maintained. Moreover, to maintain strength of bleached pulp that subjected both to ozone bleaching and hot acid treatment, recommended Kappa number after ozone bleaching was more than 3. Based on these findings, two of our mills had installed medium-consistency ozone bleaching facilities and three mills installed hot acid treatment. Especially in Yatsushiro mill, both were installed in one bleaching line (A-ZD-E/P-D sequence), and running successfully.
CPAM has been applied to the paper industry for the purpose of wet-end improvement for a long time. And molecular weight and charge density have been managed most important quality factors to make CPAM for this application. Recently branched CPAM was developed to improve retention and drainage characteristics and we considered branch degree of CPAM as important factor as molecular weight and charge density. In this experiment, we tried to investigate physical and chemical properties to determine branch degree and flocculation efficiency using Arbocell pulp which was recently developed micro size pulp and finally we applied retention and drainage test under the ONP stock condition.
Exo-polygalacturonase (exo-PG) hydrolyzes pectin acids and liberates mono-galacturonate, which plays an important role in juice extraction, and has rarely been reported. Exo-PG (AfumExoPG28A) from Aspergillus fumigatus belongs to the glycoside hydrolase 28 family. In this study, its gene was cloned and the protein was expressed and secreted in Pichia pastoris with a maximal activity of 4.44 U/ml. The optimal temperature and pH of AfumExoPG28A were 55℃ and 4.0, respectively. The enzyme exhibited activity over almost the entire acidic pH range (>20.0% activity at pH 2.5-6.5) and remained stable at pH 2.5-10.0 for 24 h. The Km and Vmax values of AfumExoPG28A were calculated by the substrate of polygalacturonic acid as 25.4 mg/ml and 23.6 U/mg, respectively. Addition of AfumExoPG28A (0.8 U/mg) increased the light transmittance and juice yield of plantain pulp by 11.7% and 9%, respectively. Combining AfumExoPG28A (0.8 U/mg) with an endo-PG (0.8 U/mg) from our laboratory, the enzymes increased the light transmittance and juice yield of plantain pulp by 45.7% and 10%, respectively. Thus, the enzyme's potential value in juice production was revealed by the remarkable acidic properties and catalytic activity in fruit pulp.
