  • The presence of high silica in bamboo hinders the use of this material for production of rayon grade pulp. Research has been carried out to overcome this deficiency and improve quality of rayon grade pulp with the modification in pulping and bleaching process. Effect of acid boosted water prehydrolysis, sulphuric acid pre-treatment of unbleached pulp, chlorination stage at lower pH and treatment of bleached pulp with $SO_2$ water were evaluated. Acid boosted water prehydrolysis of chips reduces prehydrolysis time by 50 minutes as compared to water prehydrolysis. Treatment of unbleached pulp with sulphuric acid reduces ash, acid insoluble, silica, calcium and iron contents of the pulp by 56, 31, 82, 84 and 60% respectively. The addition of acid, increase in kappa factor in $C_D$ stage and combination of both were effective in removing silica in the pulp. Treatment of final bleached pulp with $SO_2$ water removes silica to a great extent and improves optical properties of the pulp as compared to $H_2SO_4$ or PAA. Pretreatment of the pulp with acid and modification in the bleaching process can reduce silica substantially and improve the quality of rayon grade bamboo pulp.

  • Recycled pulp therefore play a very important role in the paper industry today as a substitute for virgin pulp. In many countries of the world, the paper industry could not exist as it does without recycled pulp. Because, this is mainly due to economic reasons. Particularly in our country, the additional reason is the scarcity of native pulpwood resources. Therefore, the use of recycled pulp is very important. This study was aimed to apply recycled pulp to textbook paper. So we made a paper containing 30% recycled pulp and investigated about print quality, such as color reproduction, trapping, contrast, dot gain, gloss and print through. The results showed that is similar to existing textbook papers.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to critically evaluate the quality, reliability and educational content of the information of vital pulp treatment videos available on YouTube. Materials and Methods: The keywords "pulpotomy" and "pulp capping" were searched on YouTube on 5th July 2020, until 60 English language videos of each search term with a duration shorter than 15 minutes were acquired. Video characteristics were recorded and Video Power Index (VPI) was calculated. Reliability and educational quality of videos were evaluated using the Modified DISCERN score, the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark criteria and Global Quality Scores (GQS). Videos were categorized by uploading source. Results: Regarding pulpotomy, 31.7% of the videos were uploaded by specialists and 68.3% were directed by non-specialists. In the case of pulp capping, the corresponding percentages were 45% and 55%, respectively. Videos uploaded by specialists had significantly higher modified DISCERN, JAMA and GQS scores compared to those uploaded by non-specialists. Endodontists tended to have the highest reliability and VPI scores. Conclusions: YouTube videos on vital pulp treatment contain low educational quality or incomplete information. Low popularity of dental pulp capping and pulpotomy videos may be attributed to the specialized nature of these procedures. As YouTube represents an important source for patient information about different health topics, reliable informative videos should be uploaded by specialized dental professionals.

  • The paper discusses the combined use of softwood and eucalyptus kraft pulps in the production of printing and writing papers. Looking for process and paper quality optimization, refining pilot plant trails were carried to identify the effects of refining type (mixed or separate) and intensities (specific edge load), and also furnish composition (amount of each pulp in mixture) on final paper quality and process costs. The basic effects on pulp fibers were evaluated against paper quality properties, such as physical strengths, bulk, vessel picking, opacity and porosity, as well as the interactions with papermaking process, such as estimates of paper machine runnability, paper breaks and industrial refining control. The results show that the furnish composition and the type of refining has a significant effect on properties related with both final paper quality and total costs. The best alternative for printing and writing papers was identified for mixed refining, under the lowest refining intensity, and with the highest dosage of eucalyptus pulp.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the feasibility of using deinked pulp of white ledger(DIP) for the manufacture of high quality premium tissue. The three types of tissues were prepared using the softener treated bleached DIP, softener treated mixed pulp of unbleached DIP and virgin pulp, and untreated mixed pulp of bleached DIP and virgin pulp, respectively, and their tensile index. softness, and brightness were measured and compared. The bulk and surface softness increased only slightly by the addition of softener(0.2% mineral oil) into the bleached DIP. The tensile index was decreased by 15∼30%, and the brightness was the range of 86% to 87% ISO. The softener(0.2∼0.8% mineral oil or dialkyl imidazoline) treatment of mixed pulp of unbleached DIP and virgin pulp Improved the bulk and surface of tissue considerably. However, the brightness was low as 85% ISO or below. Although the softness of the tissue made from bleached DIP blended with virgin pulp was the lowest among three types of tissues evaluated, its tensile index was the highest and brightness was 87∼88% ISO. Based on the results, it may be predicted that the bleached DIP blended with virgin pulp is the best raw material for the manufacture of high quality premium tissue if softener treatment is applied to mixed pulp, because the softness can be improved by the addition of softener. In general, the softness of tissue was improved with the increase in the amount of softener: However, the tensile index inversely proportional to the amount of softener added. Dialkyl imidazoline was more effective than mineral oil with respect to the improvement in softness, even though the loss in tensile index was severe with the treatment of dialkyl imidazoline.

  • Cellulose fibers is one of the most abundant in nature. It has many distinctive features: abundant in nature, biodegradable, non-toxic, eco-friendly, sustainable, easy to fabricate, hydrophilic, and cost-effective. Cellulose fibers, known as pulp, is produced from cellulose-containing materials by the pulping process. As the raw material, wood has been most commonly used while recycled pulp has been also used to some degree. Thus, pulp usually refers to wood pulp. Generally, the pulp and paper industry is regarded as the commodity market where the cost should be much more important than the quality. It also belongs to a mature market where the growth is slow, or even in decline. Accordingly, technological development has been rather stagnant for the industry. Recently, however, the pulp and paper industry has faced very serious challenges. First, due to digital technology, there has been a steady decline in the need for pulp and paper products. The digital industry has continuously replaced printed products such as books, newspapers, and magazines. Second, there has been a trend initiated by developed countries to limit the use of wood as the raw material for the sake of environmental protection. This forces the industry to find a more efficient use of wood pulp as well as finding alternative, non-wood sources. Third, as an individual becomes wealthier and more conscious of health-care, the quality of a product becomes more important than the cost. Thus, a paradigm shift is needed from the cost-conscientious to the quality conscientious. The objective of this article is to review the technologies aimed at engineering cellulose fibers for producing high-value added paper products.

  • Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) attacked pine was evaluated for pulp quality, chemical and physical properties, and bleachability. Chemical analyses showed that the dehydroabietic acid and total acetone extractives content were higher in the year 3 (grey) attacked MPB chips and lower in the year 5 (grey) attacked MPB chips as compared to a typical SPF (spruce/pine/fir) reference. Lignin and carbohydrate content of the MPB wood chips were comparable to the SPF. Similarly, there was little difference in kappa number, pulp yield and liquor consumption between the 3 and 5 year MPB attacked wood. Likewise there was no significant difference in the resulting tear strength, burst, or tensile strength. There appeared to be an improved bleaching response in the MPB attacked pulp as compared to the SPF reference, but this was accompanied by a slightly lower bleached pulp yield and higher bleach filtrate COD and solids content.

  • Purpose: Self-sufficiency in paper production is desired in Nigeria. This study was aimed at evaluating the performance of a locally fabricated batch pulp digester. Methods: The pulp yields of sheaths generated as waste in the production of bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris) laminates were determined at different liquor concentrations and treatment time after preliminary experiments to ascertain the conditions under which the sheath started to pulp. Moreover, the optimum pulping conditions and fiber characteristics were determined and estimated, respectively, to ascertain the pulp fiber suitability for paper production. Results: An optimum pulp yield of 65.1% was obtained at 50% NaOH and 25% $Na_2S$ liquor concentration (w/w) when the cooking time was 4 h. The results of fiber characterization of the pulp indicated an average fiber length of 2.19 mm with a low Runkel ratio of 1.63, both of which signify the suitability of the pulp for medium quality paper production. Conclusions: Softwood pulp can be blended with the fibers to improve the strength of the produced paper; further investigation should be carried out to use other non-woody plants for pulp and papermaking.

  • The aim of this article is to review the general property of the famous traditional Korean paper, "rice straw paper"(Bast-Fiber mixed with straw pulp), and to compare the paper qualities varying with the composition ratio of straw pulp, in order to revive the traditional paper in modem Korea. The experiment was carried out by making first the two different mixture papers, i. e., one is the paper of 50% bast fiber mixed with 50% straw pulp, and the other is the paper of 75% bast fiber with 25% oats straw pulp, and finally the 100% bast fiber paper was made for the purpose of comparison. The qualitative properties of these three kinds of paper with the different mixing ratio of the straw pulp were evaluated, and the findings of the experiment can be summarized as follow: 1. As to the quality aspects of the paper strength like tensile strength, breaking length, elongation, and tear strength, the test proved the 100% bast fiber paper as best, and the 50% mixed paper as the next good one. 2. In aspect of the printing adaptability such as density, opacity, brightness, whiteness, lab colors, air permeability, and roughness, the 50% mixed paper proved to be the best, due to the short cells in the straw pulp. 3. As to the air permeability, the larger ratio of straw pulp was found to be the lesser, and 75% bast fiber with 25% straw pulp mixture paper and the 100% bast fiber one were found 1/5 degree efficient. 4. In terms of the water absorption degree, 100% bast fiber paper was the fastest, but in case of mixture paper, 50% mixed one was a little faster up to the point of 1cm, while the two kinds of mixed ones appear to be almost similar to each other beyond the point. 5. The straw pulp mixed paper, especially the 50% mixed one was evaluated as the highest by the calligraphers who had experienced using the papers in terms of movement and feeling of the caligraphy and painting. In addition, although the 25% mixed paper is judged to be good for book printing because of the strength, the 50% mixed paper can be thought to be more desirable for painting and calligraphy. In conclusion, we will be able to make the quality paper with durability, by mixing the straw pulp with the bast fiber in proper ratio, following the tradition of Korean paper making.
