The study objective was to evaluate the enhanced removal of high concentrations of phosphorus from synthetic wastewater (solely phosphorus-containing) and real wastewater (pig manure) by using carbon nanotube (CNT)-coated steel slag. Generally, phosphorus removal by steel slag is attributed to Ca2+ eluted from the slag. However, in this study, CNT was used to control the excess release of Ca2+ from steel slag and increase the phosphorus removal. The phosphorus removal rate by the uncoated steel slag was lower than that of the CNT-coated steel slag, even though the Ca2+ concentrations were higher in the solution containing the uncoated steel slag. Therefore, the phosphorus removal could be attributed to both precipitation with Ca2+ eluted from steel slag in aqueous solution and adsorption onto the surface of the CNT-coated steel slag. Furthermore, the protons released from the CNT surface by exchanging with divalent cations acted to reduce the pH increase of the solution, which is attributed to the OH- eluted from the steel slag. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics of the CNT-coated steel slags followed the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of the uncoated and CNT-coated steel slags was 6.127 and 9.268 mg P g-1 slag, respectively. In addition, phosphorus from pig manure was more effectively removed by the CNT-coated steel slag than by the uncoated slag. Over 24 hours, the PO4-P removal in pig manure was 12.3% higher by the CNT-coated slag. This CNT-coated steel slag can be used to remove both phosphorus and metals and has potential applications in high phosphorus-containing wastewater like pig manure.

Most structural analyses are concerned with the deformations and stresses in a body subjected to external loads. However, in many fields, inverse problems have to be interpreted to determine surface tractions or internal stresses from displacements measured on a remote surface. In this study, the inverse processes are studied by using the finite element method for the evaluation of internal stresses. Small errors in the measured displacements often result in a substantial loss of stability of an inverse system. In order to improve the stability of the inverse system, the displacements on a section near the region of the unknown tractions are predicted by using orthogonal basis functions. We use the Gram-Schmidt orthogonal technique to determine two bases for the displacements on a section near the region of the unknown tractions. Advantages over previous methods are discussed by using numerical examples.
In this study, it was investigated on the boron separation ken synthetically prepared seawater. ion exchange resin used in the experiments was Amberlite IRA 743, containing glucamine functional group. The experiments were carried out as a function of the conditions of the pH, boron initial concentration and temperature of seawater in a batch reactor. As a result, optimum conditions for boron adsorption were at pH 8.5 and 313 K, respectively. The adsorption rate was increased very fast with increasing the temperature, but decreased with increasing the initial concentration of boron. Also, the kinetics for boron adsorption applied the pseudo-second order model, as follows: $$\frac{X}{1-X}=780[C_0]^{-1.65}t^{1.48}\;exp\;({-\frac{17883}{RT}}\)\;;\;pH8.5$$
Poly(butylene terephthalate- co-oxybenzoate)(PBOT) containing mesogenic oxybenzoate units in the main chain was synthesized through ester exchange reaction by melt mixing of poly(butylene terephthalate)(PBT) and p-acetoxybenzoic acid (ABA). From the kinetics of the copolymerization reaction, the activation energies and the rate constants of homopolymerization and copolymerization, k$_{h}$ and k$_{c}$, could be determined. From the reaction conditions of different compositions, 4/6, 5/5, and 6/4 of PBT/ABA, at 250, 260, and 27$0^{\circ}C$, it was revealed that copolymerization between PBT and ABA proceeds on a pseudo-second order reaction if the ABA content and its conversion are low. In this case, the ratio of rate constants of homopolymerization to copolymerization was in the range from 1.08 to 3.17, indicating that the copolymer with more notable block character was obtained at the higher mole fraction of ABA and at higher temperature.e.e.

A power line modem(PLM) which transfers data safely through power lines in houses or small offices is considered. When a power line is used for communications, transmitted signals could be affected by the channel characteristics such as frequency-selective fading, interference, and time-varying attenuation. In order to overcome these impairments, a direct sequence(DS) technique which is well known as an effective instrument against a variety of interferences and hostile channel properties is employed. Using a DS technique, however, requires more circuits such as PN code generator circuits, code modification circuits, and complicated synchronization circuits, and it also results in substantial acquisition delay. In this paper, some of these circuits are implemented via software programmed in the system controller, and the complicated synchronization circuits are replaced by simple circuits utilizing a 60 Hz power signal for synchronization. The synchronization ciruits used in this paper virtually eliminate the substantial acquisition delay, and is also designed to free influence of 60 Hz zero crossing jitters which reside in a power signal. As a result, a PLM using a DS technique is realized in the form of wall-socket plug, and the PLM hardware would be very much simplified.

The catalytic effects of several phase-transfer catalysts (PTC) on the liquid-liquid heterogeneous nucleophilic displacement reaction of thiocyanate on benzyl chloride have been determined. Reactions followed a pseudo-first order dependency on the benzyl chloride concentration and the observed rate constant $(k_{obsd})$ were linearly related to the concentration of catalyst and varied with variables such as reaction temperature and solvent. The sequences of catalytic activity of the displacement were $NH_4Cl$ < BTMAC < 18-crown-6 < BTEAC < PEG < TBAC < CTMAB. Enthalpies and entropies of activation associated with the displacement were 15∼20 Kcal$mo^{l-1}$, -12∼-29 eu. respectively and the reaction occurs in the interphase comprising of microemulsion.

$TiO_2$ powders were prepared via hydrolysis of titanium n-butoxide in n-butanol and hydrolysis mechanism of titanium n-butoxide was studied using UV-Vis spectrometer. Hydrolysis reactions were controlled to proceed to pseudo-first order reaction in the presence of excess water. The phases of $TiO_2$ powders, prepared under the these conditions, were identified by XRD and reaction rates were calculated by Gugggenheim method. Prepared powders were noncrystalline states in their initial stage of formation but transformed to crystalline rutile structure by heating. Reaction mechanism of titanium n-butoxide was proposed as Interchange-Associative(Ia) mechanism, based on the data of n-value and termodynamic parameters which were determined from the rate constants.
The present study investigated the photodegradation of synthetic organic dye; violet-3B, without and with the addition of C-N-codoped TiO2 catalyst using a visible halogen-lamp as a light source. The catalyst was synthesized by using a peroxo sol-gel method with free-organic solvent. The effects of initial dye concentration, catalyst dosage, and pH solution on the photodegradation of violet-3B were examined. The efficiency of the photodegradation process for violet-3B dye was higher at neutral to less acidic pH. The kinetics reaction rate of photodegradation of violet-3B dye with the addition of C-N-codoped TiO2 followed pseudo-first order kinetics represented by the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model, and increasing the initial concentration of dyes decreased rate constants of photodegradation. Photodegradation of 5 mg L-1 violet-3B dye achieved 96% color removal within 240 min of irradiation in the presence of C-N-codoped TiO2 catalyst, and approximately 44% TOC was removed as a result of the mineralization.

Batch adsorption experiments were performed to adsorb cadmium [Cd(II)], copper [Cu(II)], and lead [Pb(II)] onto sphagnum peat moss. According to the results, 10-50 mg/L of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) were effectively adsorbed and removed within 1 h by 1.0 g/L of sphagnum peat moss. The amounts of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) adsorbed on sphagnum peat moss increased with increasing the initial concentrations. The kinetics for the adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) on sphagnum peat moss was described well using the pseudo-second order model at different initial concentrations. The maximum adsorption capacities calculated from the Langmuir isotherm for Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(III) were 33.90, 29.15, and 91.74 mg/g, respectively. Experimental results showed that sphagnum peat moss was a very effective adsorbent on the adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II).
Zeolite (FZ), prepared from fly ash, was immobilized with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) to fabricate PAN/FZ beads. The prepared PAN/FZ beads were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The optimum ratio to prepare PAN/FZ beads was 0.3 g of PAN to 0.3 g of FZ. The diameter of the prepared PAN/FZ beads was about 3 mm. Sr and Cu ion adsorption experiments were conducted with PAN/FZ beads. A pseudo-second-order model fit the kinetic data for Sr and Cu ion adsorption by PAN/FZ beads well. The equilibrium data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacities were 96.5 mg/g and 74.6 mg/g for the Sr and Cu ions, respectively. Additionally, the values of thermodynamic parameters such as Gibbs free energy (${\Delta}G^o$), enthalpy (${\Delta}H^o$) and entropy (${\Delta}S^o$) were determined. The positive values of ${\Delta}H^o$ revealed the endothermic nature of the adsorption process and the negative values of ${\Delta}G^o$ were indicative of the spontaneity of the adsorption process.
