Antioxidative Properties of Ginseng Leaf Flavonoids on Cellular Membranes

  • The major flavonoid component of Ginseng leaf is trifolin, a glycoside of kaempferol. To evaluate the antioxidative properties of trifolin and kaempferol on cellular membranes, we compared them with the other flavonoids through the 102-Induced photohemolysis of rabbit erythrocytes. All the flavonoid aglycones including kaempferol, quercetin and baicalein protected effectively the cells from the 102-caused damage in a dose- dependent manner, by scavenging 102 and free radicals in the cellular membranes. The solubilization of the flavonoid aglycones into micelles or erythrocyte membranes was deduced from spectro-photometric and microscopic observations. The flavonoid glycosides were not protective or less protective than their corresponding aglycones, and trifolin was the only glycoside that exhibited a solubilization into the membranes and a significant protection against the photohemolysis. We also tested some phenolic compounds contained in Ginseng, and found that they did not prevent the photohemolysis so effectively as kaempferol or trifolin.

수포작용제 방호성능이 향상된 선택투과막 제조 (Preparation of Selectively Permeable Membrane Materials with Enhanced Protective Capability against Blister Agents)

  • 수증기 투과성과 DMMP 방호성능을 가지는 cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) 기반의 선택투과막에 대해 여러가지 첨가제를 적용하여 CEES에 대한 방호성능 개선을 시도하였다. 시험결과, CAB/PEI 기반의 선택투과막은 수증기 투과성은 그대로 유지하면서(${\geq}1,800g/m^2/day$), CEES에 대한 방호성능의 개선을 보여주었다($7.1{\sim}11.5{\mu}g/cm^2{\cdot}24hr$). 이 중, $Ag^+$ 이온과 이온교환수지 혼합물을 포함한 CAB/PEI 선택투과막에서 가장 우수한 방호성능을 확보하였다. 그리고 시험한 모든 선택투과막은 생물학작용제를 모사할 수 있는 다양한 크기의 에어로졸 입자($0.005{\sim}3{\mu}m$)에 대해서도 방호성능을 가짐을 확인하였다.

  • The study on penetrant transport in glassy polymers has been actively pursued for decades because of its growing significance in polymer processing and related applications such as not only membranes, but corrosion protective coatings, microlithography, microelectronic fabrication, etc. In membranes application of polymeric materials, successful utilization requires understanding of how solvents penetrate, swell, and sometimes dissolve polymeric materials under various environmental conditions, as their permselecdve performance is significantly affected by it. The expose of polymer membranes to solvents may result in the structural failure due to mechanical softening, embrittlement or crazing.

Alginic acid-silica hydrogel coatings for the protection of ssmotic distillation membranes against wet-out by surface-active agents

  • Alginic acid-silica hydrogel films was prepared for testing as protective coating materials for PTFE OD membranes. Unprotected hydrophobic membranes are subject to wet-out when contacted by surface-active agents. Films were characterised using SEM, XRD, DSC, mechanical strength measurements, and water-swelling measurements. In OD trials using coated membranes, no wet-out occurred over the 15 h duration of three consecutive 5 h OD trials using orange oil-water mixtures. In the case of detergent solutions, the coating afforded protection to the membrane for 4-5 h. In a separate trial, no wet-out occurred when the coated side of the membrane was placed in contact with 1.2 wt % orange oil for 72 hours.

  • We make several membranes with multilayer structure and characterize protective performance in various ways. Multilayer membrane is composed of shell fabric, support membrane, functional polymer membrane and liner fabric. In this research, we apply cellulose acetate derivatives as base polymer in functional polymer membrane and characterize water resistance, water vapor permeation, protective performance against DMMP and aerosol. Test results show that cellulose based polymer with polyethyleneimine possess performance with good water vapor permeation and excellent protective capability against DMMP equivalent to Saratoga type's protective suits. Also, these materials possess aerosol protective performance and water resistance.

  • Poly(L-lactide) microcapsules containing hydrophilic penetrate were prepared by interfacial precipitation method through solvent evaporation from w/o/w emulsion. Effect of four determinative process parameters on the particle size distributions, morphologies, and release properties of microcapsules coated with poly(L-lactide) was investigated. Moreover, susceptible functional cotton fabrics treated with the mentioned microcapsules were prepared and laundry test up to 15 times were done to determine fastness properties. As a result, the prepared poly(L-lactide) microcapsules with a more sharp-distributive, rounder, and more permeable membranes could be prepared by means of protective colloid concentration, solution volume and stirring rate.

Veterinarians as a Risk Group for Zoonoses: Exposure, Knowledge and Protective Practices in Finland

  • Background: Veterinarians may encounter a variety of zoonotic pathogens in their work. Methods: We conducted two cross-sectional questionnaire studies among veterinarians in Finland. Participants were recruited during two Annual Veterinary Congresses. In 2009, 306 veterinarians participated in an extensive questionnaire study, and in 2016, 262 veterinarians participated in a more focused study that included two same questions. Results: In 2009, the majority (90.9%) of the participating veterinarians reported having been occupationally exposed to zoonotic pathogens. Zoonotic infections (15.0%), needle stick incidents (78.8%), bites (85.0%), as well as infected skin lesions (24.2%) were reported. In 2009, 8.2% of the participants fully agreed with the statement "I have good knowledge of zoonoses and their prevention"; in 2016, the proportion was 10.3%. The reported use of protective practices and personal protective equipment in connection with specific veterinary procedures indicated that there was room for improvement, particularly in protection from pathogens that are transmissible via inhalation and mucous membranes. Conclusion: The results confirm that veterinarians are commonly occupationally exposed to zoonotic pathogens. Education should aim to improve and maintain the knowledge of zoonoses and their prevention. Use of protective practices should be advocated.

땅빈대 추출물의 세포 보호 효과 및 성분 분석에 관한 연구 (Cellular Protective Effect and Component Analysis of Euphorbia humifusa Extracts)

  • In this study, the cellular protective effect, antioxidative property and component analysis of Euphorbia humifusa extracts were investigated. The ethyl acetate fraction ($3.68\;{\mu}g/mL$) and aglycone fraction ($3.15\;{\mu}g/mL$) of Euphorbia humifusa extract showed prominent free radical (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH) scavenging activity ($FSC_{50}$). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activity ($OSC_{50}$) of Euphorbia humifusa extract on ROS generated in $Fe^{3+}$-EDTA/$H_2O_2$ system was investigated using the luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay. The ethyl acetate fraction ($0.43\;{\mu}g/mL$) and aglycone fraction ($0.35\;{\mu}g/mL$) of extract showed higher ROS scavenging activity than L-ascorbic acid ($1.50\;{\mu}g/mL$). The cellular protective effects of fractions of Euphorbia humifusa extract on the rose-bengal sensitized photohemolysis of human erythrocytes were investigated. The ethyl acetate fraction and aglycone fraction of extract protected cellular membranes against ROS in a concentration dependent manner ($5{\sim}25\;{\mu}g/mL$), and was more effective than (+)-${\alpha}$-tocopherol, lipid peroxidation chain blocker. Aglycone fraction from Euphorbia humifusa extract showed 2 bands in TLC and 2 peaks in HPLC. In HPLC chromatogram of aglycone fraction, peak 1 and peak 2 were identified as quercetin and kaempferol, respectively. And these components are very effective as antioxidant. Thus, these results indicate that fractions of Euphorbia humifusa extracts can function as antioxidant in biological systems, particularly skin exposed to UV radiation by scavenging $^1O_2$ and other ROS, and protect cellular membranes against ROS. Fractions of Euphorbia humifusa extracts can be applicable to new functional cosmetics for antioxidant.

그라비올라로부터 분리된 Kaempferol 및 Nicotiflorin의 1O2으로 유도된 세포손상에 대한 보호 효과와 그 메커니즘 (Cellular Protective Effects and Mechanisms of Kaempferol and Nicotiflorin Isolated from Annona muricata against 1O2-induced Damage)

  • 본 연구에서는 그라비올라의 주성분인 nicotiflorin을 분리하고 그 아글리콘 성분인 kaempferol을 얻어 세포 보호 효과 및 그 보호 메커니즘을 규명하였다. L-Ascorbic acid 및 (+)-${\alpha}$-tocopherol을 대조군으로 하여, $^1O_2$로 유도된 세포 손상에 대해 nicotiflorin 및 kaempferol의 보호 효과를 측정한 결과 nicotiflorin < (+)-${\alpha}$-tocopherol < kaempferol 순으로 보호 효과가 증가하였다. L-Ascorbic acid는 세포 보호 효과를 보이지 않았다. 이들의 세포 보호 효과 메커니즘을 밝히기 위해 singlet oxygen 소광 속도 상수, 자유라디칼 소거 활성, ROS 소거 활성 및 적혈구 세포 침투율을 측정하였다. 실험 결과, kaempferol과 그 배당체인 nicotiflorin의 세포 보호 효과에 있어서 큰 차이는 세포막에의 침투가 가장 큰 요인으로 확인되었다. 대조군 L-ascorbic acid가 항산화능은 크지만 실험 조건에서 세포막에 침투가 잘 안되어 세포 보호 효과가 나타나지 않은 것으로 확인되었다. Kaempferol과 (+)-${\alpha}$-tocopherol의 비교를 통해 세포 침투뿐만 아니라 라디칼 소거활성 및 ROS 소거 활성도 세포 보호 효과에 기여하는 것으로 나타났다. 결론적으로, 광증감 반응으로 유도된 세포막 파괴에 대한 보호작용은 항산화제들의 세포 침투, 자유라디칼 및 ROS 소거 활성이 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다.
