  • The Seoul metropolitan government has installed soundproofing walls in road tunnels to improve the tunnel environment for pedestrians. To evaluate the efficiency of these soundproofing walls, we measured noise levels and concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ and ultrafine particles (UFP) in tunnels with or without these walls. Although noise and UFP levels were significantly lower in the tunnels with soundproofing walls, $PM_{2.5}$ levels were significantly higher: but were significantly lowered by use of a ventilation system. When $PM_{2.5}$ and noise levels were simultaneously measured in a tunnel with soundproofing wall, noise level was significantly reduced but $PM_{2.5}$ level was significantly higher. It is concluded that the soundproofing wall can protect pedestrians from noise, but not PM. Installation of a ventilation system is recommended for protection of pedestrians in tunnels with soundproofing walls.

  • Radon-222 exhalation rate from several domestic building materials were experimentally measured by using radon cup method, in which a CR-39 plastic is used as a passive radon detector. The radon detection factor of CR-39 detector determined in a series of calibration experiments was $0.164{\pm}0.005(tracks\;cm^{-2}/Bq\;d\;m^{-3})$, which is consistent with those reported by other investigators. The radon exhalation rates of several building materials (brick, red brick, concrete block, granite plate, concrete floor and wall) ranges from $6.8{\times}10^{-6}\;(granite plate)\;to\;75.0{\times}10^{-6}Bq/m^2-sec(brick)$ with the increasing order of granite plate, red brick, concrete wall, concrete block, concrete floor and brick. It showed that the CR39 radon cup can be efficiently utilized in measuring the radon-222 gas exhalation rate from building materials.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure the absorbed dose and to calculate the effective dose for one periapical radiography using the portable and wall type dental X-ray machines. Materials and methods: Thermoluminescent chips were placed at 25 sites throughout the layers of the head and neck of a tissue-equivalent human skull phantom. The man phantom was exposed with the portable and wall type dental X-ray machines. For one periapical radiography taken by portable dental X-ray machine, the exposure setting was 60 kVp, 2 mA and 0.2 seconds, while for one periapical radiography taken by wall type dental X-ray machine, exposure setting was 70 kVp, 8 mA and 0.074 seconds. Absorbed dose measurements were performed and equivalent doses to individual organs were summed using ICRP 103 to calculate effective dose. Results: In the upper anterior periapical radiography using portable dental X-ray machine and in the lower posterior periapical radiography using both machines, the highest absorbed dose was recorded at the mandible body. The effective dose in upper anterior periapical radiography using portable and wall type dental X-ray machines was $4{\mu}Sv$, $2{\mu}Sv$, respectively. In the lower posterior periapical radiography, the effective dose for each portable and wall type dental X-ray machines was $6{\mu}Sv$, $2{\mu}Sv$. Conclusion: It was recommended that the operator use prudently potable dental X-ray machine because that the effective dose in the periapical radiography using wall type dental X-ray machine was lower than that in the periapical radiography using portable dental X-ray machine.

  • The paper relates to a study on the conduction heat transfer characteristics according to the heating temperature of lightweight panel wall material. Plywoods, marbles, heat resistant glasses, as well as general gypsum board and fire-proof gypsum board, which have been widely used for lightweight panel wall material, were selected as experiment samples, and heating temperatures were set as $100^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. Next, each of the heating temperatures were introduced on the bottom part of the wall material for 30 minutes, and analyses were made on the heat transfer characteristics to the backside part on the top part through conduction. As results of the experiment, the maximum backside temperatures were measured up to $190^{\circ}C$ for a general gypsum board, $198^{\circ}C$ for a fire-proof gypsum board, $189^{\circ}C$ for a plywood, $321^{\circ}C$ for a marble, and $418^{\circ}C$ for a heat resistant glass as heating temperatures were introduced maximum of $600^{\circ}C$. In addition, the maximum change rate of conduction heat transfer were measured up to 85 W for a general gypsum board, 95 W for a fire-proof gypsum board, 67 W for a plywood, 1686 W for a marble, and 3196 W for a heat resistant glass as the maximum heating temperatures were introduced up to $600^{\circ}C$. Also, carbonization characteristics of the wallpapers were measured to visually check the danger of conduction heat transfer, and the results showed that smokes were first generated on the attached wallpapers for the heating temperature $600^{\circ}C$, which were 1021 s for a general gypsum board, 978 s for a fire-proof gypsum board, 1395 s for a plywood, 167 s for a marble, and 20 s for a heat resistant glass, and that the first generation of carbonization were 1115 s for a general gypsum board, 1089 s for a fire-proof gypsum board, 1489 s for a plywood, 192 s for a marble, and 36 s for a heat resistant glass.

  • The suspension bridge between Myodo and Gwangyang is located in the main navigation channel to Gwangyang Harbor. So, there is need for the collision protection against large vessels. In this paper, the method of risk analysis and non-linear numerical analysis are conducted to consider the ship collision effects. The results of risk analysis, the annual frequency of collapse is more than the acceptable frequency 0.0001. Therefore, as a ship collision protection, island protection with concrete block quay wall is planned. The ship collision force on the pylon is less than the lateral capacity of pylon from the nonlinear numerical analysis.

  • The ship collision analysis of steel pile group as protection system of bridge in navigable waterways was performed to analyze the structural characteristics of protective structure during ship collision. The analysis encompassed finite element modeling of ship and pile, modeling of material non-linearity, hard impact analysis, displacement-based analysis and soft impact analysis for collision scenarios. Through the analysis of hard impact with a rigid wall, impact load for each collision type of ship bow was estimated. In the displacement-based analysis the estimate of energy which protection system can absorb within its maximum horizontal clearance so as to secure bridge pier from vessel contact during collision was performed. Soft impact analysis for various collision scenarios was conducted and the collision behaviors of vessel and pile-supported protection system were reviewed for the design of protection system. The understanding of the energy dissipation mechanism of pile supported structure and colliding vessel would give us the optimized design of protective structure.

  • Concrete is an outstanding material in terms of its impact and blast resistance performance. However, there a limitation of concrete is its risk of collapse due to the brittle failure and spalling. Increasing the thickness of members was used as a method to enhance the protective performance of concrete, despite the resulting inefficient space. To solve this problem, different types of fiber reinforced concrete were developed. Recently, another type of fiber reinforced concrete is also being developed and applied as a material that offers protection against impacts and blasts by increasing the flexural toughness of concrete. In this study, the test was conducted to evaluate the impact resistance performance of fiber reinforced concrete and mortar according to impact of high-velocity projectile. A concrete T-wall was also tested to evaluate its protective performance from fragment by 155mm-thick artillery shell. The test results revealed that improving flexural strength through fiber reinforcement inhibited cracks and spalling of rear, and spalling of front by high-velocity impact. As such, it is expected to improve the protective performance of the T-wall and reduce the thickness of the member.

  • A test facility to measure the performance of a KM(Kick Motor) is constructed, and prediction of blast wave propagation over the facility is performed to check if the safety of test personnel in MCC(Main Control Center) can be guaranteed even for the most severe explosion. Assuming that the initial explosion energy is contained in a sphere under the pressure of 500, 1000, 1500 psi, respectively, the radius of the sphere is determined for each pressure to set the mass of contained explosion gas to 35 kg. The material properties of explosion gas are set to be the ones of KM propellant combustion gas under normal condition. To reduce the effort and time required for a complex three-dimensional modeling, the flowfield is approximated to axismmetry. Calculations are performed for all three initial pressure conditions, and the analysis of the result is given for 1500 psi which is expected to be the worst case. The maximum pressure is 3.5 psig while the minimum pressure is -1.2 psig on the outer wall of MCC, and the maximum pressure difference between the inner and outer walls of protection wall amounts to 3.0 psi.

  • Structure and differentiation mechanism of the seed coat of Panax ginseng are studied with light and electron microscopes to clarify the developmental processes of seed coat and the structural changes during the differentiation of the seed. The seed coat of ginseng is differentiated from the inner cell layers of ovary wall, which can be compared with the seed coat differentiated from integument(s) in other plants. The single integument is differentiated into endothelium, which is degenerated to one layer of 4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in thickness, composed of remants of cell wall components in fully ripened seed. The ripened seed coat is composed of three layers; fringe layer, inner layer and palisade layer, and all of the them are crossed at right angles with one another. This may be the cause of protection of the kernel from other mechanical injuries. The thickness of fully ripened seed coat is about 300~600 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and arrangements of sclereids are irregular. However, the raphe region of seed coat is thin about 200 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in thickness and sclereids in that region are arranged regularly. This is the important cause for the cleavage of the seed coat during post-maturation process. The vascular bundles on the raphe are still remaining after sarcocarps are removed, and one of the branches of vascular bundles entered into the seed coat through the hilum and extended to chalazal region. During post-maturation process, the supply of water being necessary for growth of embryo may be accompolished by the vascular bundles entered into the seed coat through the opened hilum.
