  • This paper suggest a method of inclusion probability proportional to size sampling that provides a non-negative and stable variance estimator. The sampling procedure is quite simple and flexible since a sampling design is easily obtained using mathematical programming. This scheme appears to be preferable to Nigam, Kumar and Gupta's (1984) method which uses a balanced incomplete block designs. A comparison is made with their method through an example in the literature.

  • S${\"{a}}$rndal (1996) and Knottnerus (2003) had a critical look at the well known variance estimator of Sen (1953) and Yates and Grundy (1953) in probability proportional to size sampling. In this paper, we point out that although their approaches can avoid the difficulties in variance estimation with respect to the joint probabilities, there exist the disadvantages in practice. Also, we describe a sampling procedure available in statistical software that are useful for the variance estimation.

  • Using multi-resolution, the mutiresolution proportional-integral-derivative(MRPID) controller functions as a filter to eliminate noise and disturbance which are included in error signals. If the sampling frequency is high, the response time will be delayed because of the remaining high frequency component although the overshoot is removed. However, if the sampling frequency is low, the response time will be enhanced by getting rid of signal components while the overshoot is increased. In this paper, the sampling frequency tuning method is used the response of the proportional integral derivative(PID) controller and the MRPID controller, and the parameter tuning method is considered the characteristic of the MRPID controller. The proposal method is verified by computer simulations.

  • The decision tree approach is most useful in classification problems and to divide the search space into rectangular regions. Decision tree algorithms are used extensively for data mining in many domains such as retail target marketing, fraud dection, data reduction and variable screening, category merging, etc. CHAID(Chi-square Automatic Interaction Detector) uses the chi-squired statistic to determine splitting and is an exploratory method used to study the relationship between a dependent variable and a series of predictor variables. In this paper we propose CHAID algorithm by cube-based proportional sampling and explore CHAID algorithm in view of accuracy and speed by the number of variables.

  • In this study a statistical water quality monitoring network design of Kyung-An stream is proposed. Water quality data for the design is obtained by QUAL2E model simulation. The observed monthly average water quality data from March to November in Kyung-An stream has been applied to this study. HEC-RAS model is also used for QUAL2E hydrauric parameter estimation. Before QUAL2E water quality parameter estimation, FORA is performed to reduce the number of parameters to be estimated, and then water quality parameters are calibrated with a observed monthly average data. Using these simulated water quality data, the number of gage station and its location are estimated by kriging theory and branch & boundary method. Such a network design is based on two case; average flow and low flow case, respectively. Next, proportional sampling method is applied to estimate the sampling frequency.

  • In this study, we make an effort to find a method to acquire sensitive information when sensitive populations are consisted of several clusters that vary in size. We suggest and systemize the theoretical validity for applying RRT(Randomized Response Technique) to PPS(Probability Proportional to Size) sampling method and derive the estimate and it's variance of the proportion of sensitive characteristic of population by using the suggested method. We compare the efficiency of the suggested technique by two-stage equal probability sampling. We examine practical aspects of the suggested method of RRT by PPS sampling through field survey.

  • A quasi ideal importance sampling simulation method combined in the conditional expectation is proposed for the structural reliability estimation. The quasi ideal importance sampling joint probability density function (p.d.f.) is so composed on the basis of the ideal importance sampling concept as to be proportional to the conditional failure probability multiplied by the p.d.f. of the sampling variables. The respective marginal p.d.f.s of the ideal importance sampling joint p.d.f. are determined numerically by the simulations and partly by the piecewise integrations. The quasi ideal importance sampling simulations combined in the conditional expectation are executed to estimate the failure probabilities of structures with multiple failure surfaces and it is shown that the proposed method gives accurate estimations efficiently.

  • When using the well-known variance estimator of Sen (1953) and Yates and Grundy (1953) in inclusion probability proportional to size sampling, we often encounter the problems due to the calculation of the joint probabilities. Sarndal (1996) and Knottnerus (2003) proposed alternative strategies for variance estimation to avoid those problems in the traditional method. We discuss some of practical issues that arise when they are used. Also, we describe the traditional strategy using a sampling procedure available in a statistical software. It would be one of the attractive choices for design-based variance estimation.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose a method of designing a systematic panel survey at the institutional level to lay the foundation for data-based decision-making using vocational training teachers and instructors as the population. In this study, the target population and sampling frame, which are the main elements necessary for planning a panel survey, are proposed. Also based on expert advice and empirical data analysis, the sampling unit and sampling method taking into account the outer and inner variables are presented, comprehensively considering the representativeness of data, the efficiency and sustainability of data collection. As a result of the study, with the unit of the panel as a vocational training institution, a two-stage stratified proportional sampling plan is proposed so that the institution selected as the panel and the vocational training teachers and instructors belonging to the institution can participate in the survey. Based on this, implications for the panel survey sample design are presented.
