  • In this study, the damage to a concrete br~dge pier due to flre caused by the fall of an oil truck were investigated by the use of FEM and by tensile tests for reinfortements. And thtse results were analyzed and compared with the measured values. In the FEM calculations, the selected variable was the fire temperature $T_a=500-800^{\circ}C$. The fixed values were the heat transition coefficient ${\alpha}=2000W/m^2{\cdot}K$. the initial temperature of concrete $T_0=5{\circ}C$ and the fire duration t=30 minutes. As the results obtained from numerical calculations, the property darrlage zone ap,)eared to be 1.5-4.1cm and the structure damage zone appeared to be 8.7- 10.1cm from the concrete surface. And this results give values very similar to those measured, nanlelv 2-4cm and 8~10cm respectively. The results frorn tensile tests give no serious loss of the tensile strength.

  • Purpose of this study is to classify damaged lands according to the cause of the damage and their influences based on characteristic of the damaged lands in DeMilitarized Zone(DMZ) area, and utilize this study as a fundamental study for establishment of ecosystem restoration system. Literature review and field survey have been conducted to review the damage status of DMZ area. For field survey, first year and second year have been conducted, in which type of the damage has been reviewed in this study. In the result, types of damage have been classified into 6 categories: 'alteration of initial landform', 'loss of surface layer', 'land pollution', 'alteration of soil chemical property', 'decline of vegetation', and 'invasion of foreign species'. Restoration for each damage type is as following. First, for alteration of initial landform, the land is restored to the original landform prior to the damage and connection to surrounding ecosystem is considered. Second, for loss of surface layer, lost surface layer is restored or further loss is prevented with stabilization. Third, for land pollution, source of the pollution is eradicated or self-circulation with purification of polluted land is encouraged. Fourth, for alteration of soil chemical property, soil is restored of its original property with eradication of the pollution source and improvement of soil. Fifth, for decline of vegetation, current vegetation and anticipated alteration in future are considered and number of wild species is to be increased based on structure and characteristic of nearby vegetation. Sixth, for invasion of foreign species, prevention of dominance by risky species and facilitation ecological stability with ecological management are to be considered. Influence according to the cause of damage has occurred in secondary(indirect) influence or simultaneous occurrence of several damage types. Considering all these aspects, when type of the damage is complex, restoration process for each of former mentioned 6 damage types with solitary influence should be considered in unison.

  • In Korea, every year during the summer season, typhoons and torrential rains cause floods and damage to property. In particular, the Imjin River basin is characterized by steep slopes, narrow upstream areas, and low flat downstream areas, which are vulnerable to floods. In addition, damages occurred due to unauthorized discharge in the Hwanggang Dam, a large dam upstream of the Imjin River in North Korea. In order to prevent such flood damage, Korea is constructing the Gunnam Flood Control Site in 2010 to prevent flood damage. However, even after the construction of the flood control zone, the flood control capacity is only 20% of the maximum water level of the Hwanggang dam. This study used LAHARZ_py program to calculate flood damage area in the northern part of Gyeonggi province. As a result, when the discharge of Hwanggang dam exceeding the flood control ability of Gunnam flood control zone occurs, damage to Yeoncheon-gun and Paju-si of Gyeonggi-do was expected. This study will be useful as a material to prepare for flood damage.

  • Wrenching climatic changes due to ecocide and global wanning are producing a natural disaster. Coastal zones have been damaged by typhoons and accompanying storm surges. Severe waves, and destruction of the environment are adding to the severity of coastal disasters. There has been an increased interest in these coastal zone problems, and associated social confusion, after the loss of life and terrible property damage caused by typhoon Maemi. Especially if storm surges coincide with high ticks, the loss of life and property damage due to high waters are even worse. Therefore, it is desirable to accurately forecast not only the timing of storm surges but also the amount water level increase. Such forecasts are very important from the view point of coastal defense. In this study, using a numerical model, storm surge was simulated to examine its fluctuation characteristics for the coastal area behind Masan Bay, Korea. In the numerical model, a moving boundary condition was incorporated to explain wave run-up. Numerically predicted inundation regimes and depths were compared with measurements from a field survey. Comparisons of the numerical results and measured data show a very good correlation. The numerical model adapted in this study is expected to be a useful tool for analysis of storm surges, and for predicting inundation regimes due to coastal flooding by severe water waves.

  • The 24 January 2020 (Mw=6.8) earthquake with epicentre in Elazığ (Sivrice) on the East Anatolian Fault Zone caused loss of life and property. The information was given about the seismotectonic setting and regional seismicity along this fault zone and aftershock activity and ground motion data of this earthquake. Earthquake parameters were obtained for five different earthquake stations which were closer to the epicentre. Horizontal and vertical design spectra were obtained for the geographic locations for each earthquake station. The obtained spectra for the earthquake epicentre were compared with selected appropriate attenuation relationships. The damages after earthquake were evaluated via geotechnical and structural aspects. This study also aims to investigate the cause-effect relationships between structural damage in reinforced-concrete and masonry structures, respectively. The lack of engineering services was effective on the amount of damage in masonry structures. Insufficient reinforcement and concrete strength, dimensions and inadequate detailing increased the amount of damage in reinforced-concrete structures. Importance should be given to negative parameters that may weaken the defence mechanisms of structures for earthquake-resistant structural design.

  • The government enforced 'Act on the acquisition of land for the public undertakings and compensation' commenced on the 1st of January 2003 to faithfully protect the property right of people and to scheme the effiecient drive of public works by systematizing the procedures and the standards of compensation and reforming irrational systems. The previous act regulated to compensate a rightful person of fishery right, who is in a nearby area of public works enforcement zone for actual loss according to the level of damage. On the contrary, as for the fishery damage happened at the outside of public works enforcement zone, the act regulates to compensate for a loss when it is actullay occurred and affirmed. So, the related act was amended as, so called, Post Factum Compensation. With regard to the Post Factum Compensation regulation for the fishery damage occurred at the outside of this public works enforcement zone, many objections and problems are raised as it is not clearly understood of the nature of the fishery compensation. However, this paper is not intended to mention the right or wrong of the current law, but to discuss the problems or remedies of 'Act on the acquisition of land for the public undertakings and compensation' after examining cases of public works which was enforced for the fishery compensation within the current law.

  • A Lahar on the volcanic area is one of the important hazard that can cause the loss of life and property damage. In order to estimate lahar hazard area at Ulleung Island, we simulated lahar inundation area using Laharz_py. We assumed 400 m of additional elevation for DEM to draw proximal hazard zone of Ulleung Island that H/L ratio were selected 0.45 and 0.5. And lahar volumes for simulation were estimated to 30,000, 50,000, 70,000, $100,000m^3$, respectively. In the results, 5 streams are located near a proximal hazard zone, Jeodong (east), Sadong and Okchon (southeast), Namyang (southwest), and Chusan (north), Nari basin is also considered that has a possibility of lahar during downpour. The results of this study can be used as basic data to make a hazard map for reduce the damage that can be caused by volcanic hazards occurred on Ulleung Island.

  • The materials of sculptured stone property around the Hyeonleung Royal Tomb in Guri consist mainly of high weathered of granitic rocks with magnetite-series. Deterioration characteristics occurred highly with microorganism, soil inflow and black contaminants at the burial mound zone. As a result of deterioration evaluation, stone surface around the burial mound zone show serious comprehensive damage of soil inflow (50.5%) and lichen coverage (47.6%) which are the major damaging factors, and there are about 8.6% of biological growth noticeably in the north side. Surface contaminants and the discoloration had the complex causes. Gypsum occurred between joints of stones and the major contaminant type, darkening which was analyzed organic bodies caused discoloration. From result of ultrasonic velocity measurements, there are mean value of 2,195 m/s with highly weathered (HW) grade. Most of the stone properties showed 4 to 5 weathered grade. Therefore, it turned out that sculpture stone properties require conservation treatments. To remove soil accelerating damage factors and lichen occupying high percents, the cleaning process is necessary and consolidation, rejoining and filling are needed as well. Also, consideration on removing conservation materials containing Ca and e fflorescence is required and retreatments need to be considered.
