  • A topological theory has been introduced to explain and evaluate the fractional volumes of system materials, the change of the weight and concentration of monomer molecules, molecular weight distribution, and interaction functions of polymer-polymer and polymer-oligomer, etc. for dispersion polymerization. The previous theory of Lu et al. has offered only an incomplete simulation model for dispersion polymer systems, whereas our present one gives a general theoretical model applicable to all the polymerization systems. The theory of Lu et al. considered only the physical property term caused by interaction between matters of low molecular weight (i.e., diluent, monomer, and oligomer) and polymer particles without dealing with physical properties caused by the structure of polymer networks in polymer particles, while our theory deals with all physical effect possible, caused by the displacement of not only entangled points but also junction points in polymer particles. The theoretically predictive values show good agreement with the experimental data for dispersion polymerization systems.

  • In this study, the influence of pre-treatment(bleaching, mercerization by liquid ammonia and caustic soda) on cotton fabrics were investigated on dyeing Rubia cordifolia extracts. Aluminium Sulfate, Iron(Ⅱ) Sulfate Heptahydrate, Copper(Ⅱ) Sulfate Pentahydrate, Tin(Ⅱ) Sulfate, Manganese(Ⅱ) Chloride Tetrahydrate were used as mordanting agents. K/S value and washing fastnesses of the dyed cotton fabrics pretreated under different conditions were investigated. The K/S values were increased in the order of bleaching, liquid ammonia and mercerization pre-treatment. It was found that the pre-treatment conditions did not significantly affect the color change. The colorfastness to washing of most of all dyed fabrics were over grade 4 regardless of pre-treatment condition.

  • The use of high-strength grout applied for facility foundations and bridges has recently been expanding in offshore wind farm. Wind farm in offshore require bearing capacity for horizontal loads such as wind, waves, and earthquakes. In order to improve the bearing force of the base part, sufficient fluidity and a certain strength should be ensured so that the high-strength grout is densely charged in the narrow space of the connection part. Therefore, in this study, changes in fluidity and strength according to the ratio of PC-based superplasticizer mixed in high-strength grout were measured. As a result, as the ratio of the superplasticizer increased, fluidity increased and strength decreased. However, the strength did not decrease when the ratio of superplasticizer was above a 0.005. Therefore, it was confirmed that the fluidity change was remarkable when a 0.005 ratio of PC-based superplasticizer were added.

  • Currently, according to the climate change, serious damage by Typhoon has been occurred in the world. In this respect, the research on the damage prediction model to minimize the damage from various natural disaster has been conducted in several developed countries. In the case of U.S, various damage prediction models of buildings from natural disasters have been used widely in many organizations such as insurance companies and governments. In South Korea, although studies regarding damage prediction model of hurricane have been conducted, the scope has been only limited to consider the property of hurricane. However, it is necessary to consider various factors such as socio-economic, physical, geographical, and built environmental factors to predict the damages. Therefore, to address this issue, correlation analysis is conducted between various variables based on the data of hurricane from 2003 to 2012. The findings of this study can be utilized to develop for predicting the damage of hurricane on buildings.

  • BACKGROUND: The incandescent bulb and compact fluorescent lamp are widely using as a light sources for daylength extension of chrysanthemum. But, these light sources consume a lot of electricity and have short longevity. A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semi conductor light source. LEDs have many advantages over incandescent light sources including lower energy consumption, longer lifetime. In this study, we investigated the intensity of red light to control flowering of chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum cv. "Shinma") by using LEDs. METHODS AND RESULTS: The red (660 nm) and far-red (730 nm) light were irradiated subsequently to investigate photo-reversible flowering responses of chrysanthemum. The flowering of chrysanthemum was inhibited by night interruption with red light but subsequently irradiated far-red light induced the flowering of chrysanthemum. This photoreversibility, reversion of the inductive effect of a brief red light pulse by a subsequent far-red light pulse, is a property of photo responses regulated by the plant photoreceptor phytochrome B. Four different intensity of red light of 0.7, 1.4, 2.1, and $2.8{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ (PAR) were irradiated at growth room in order to determine the threshold for floral inhibition of chrysanthemum. Over $1.4{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ of the red lights irradiated chrysanthemums were not flowered. The plant length, fresh weight, number of leaves, and leaf area of chrysanthemum irradiated with red light were increased by 17%, 36%, 11%, and 48%, respectively, compared to those of compact fluorescent lamp. CONCLUSION(S): The red light and subsequential far-red light showed that the photoreversibility on flowering of chrysanthemum. The red light ($1.4{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ of red LEDs) and white light (50 Lux of compact fluorescent lamp) have the same effect on inhibition of flowering in chrysanthemum. Additionally, the red light increased the plant height and dry weight of chrysanthemum.

  • The phase change electrode board for the bio-information detection through electrical property response of phase change material was developed in this study. We manufactured the electrode board using Aluminum first that is widely used in conventional semiconductor device process. Without further treatment, these aluminum electrodes tend to contain voids in PETEOS(plasma enhanced tetraethyoxysilane) material that are easily detected by cross-sectional SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope). The voids can be easily attacked and transformed into holes in between PETEOS and electrodes after etch back and washing process. In order to resolve this issue of Al electrode board, we developed a electrode board manufacturing method using low resistivity TiN, which has advantages in terms of the step-coverage of phase change($Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$, GST) thin film as well as thermodynamic stability, without etch back and washing process. This TiN material serves as the top and bottom electrode in PRAM(Phase-change Random Access Memory). The good connection between the TiN electrode and GST thin film was confirmed by observing the cross-section of TiN electrode board using SEM. The resistances of amorphous and crystalline GST thin film on TiN electrodes were also measured, and 1000 times difference between the amorphous and crystalline resistance of GST thin film was obtained, which is well enough for the signal detection.

  • This study investigates the temperature change and thermal conductivity for the braking disc of the railway vehicle due to the types of train and service conditions. The temperature change was measured by non-contact Infrared thermometers. Average temperature was measured between $79.32^{\circ}C$ and $104.46^{\circ}C$ due to types of train and service section. In the same service section, the surface temperatures of Saemaul train were higher than Mugungwha train; the reason might have been the average service speed of Saemaul train (83km/h) was higher than Mugungwha train (107km/h), and the weight was similar 39t (Mugungwha) and 39.3t (Saemaul). But the maximum surface temperature was measured on the Mugungwha train; however the difference was not too big with the maximum temperature of Saemaul train. Also, the disc surface temperatures were changed due to the material of lining; metal and non-asbestos, on the same train and the same service section. In addition. the thermal conductivity was tested the thermal conductivities were increased by the increasing of the temperature. The change is too big between $100^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$. But each average value is small. and the mechanical property change is very low. As a result, we conclude that this disc is suitable for usage between $100^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$.

  • In this research, the oil detection method and the characteristic of sensor using the selective reaction of silicone rubber in response to hydrocarbon oil will be described. As a sensing principle, the swelling property of silicone rubber in response to hydrocarbon fuel is used, also a strain gauge is used to transduce the volume change to an electrical signal. The sensor core is manufactured with a strain gauge embedded in silicone rubber by the curing process and experiments for characteristics of sensor core with various oils were carried out. It is shown that the sensor core can be used as an oil spill detection sensor. Also, for the application to the sea area, a buoy type sensor platform is integrated with a sensor core and a strain amplifier and it is tested in the simulated oil spill condition. In this study, it is proven that the integrated sensor can be used for the detection of various oils.

  • In this study, vibrational behavior of uniform pipe carrying a moving medium is studied by using a transfer matrix and the displacement function derived from the conventional beam theory. In various boundary conditions, flow velocity and mechanical property change of the variation of natural frequency are investigated. The Coriolis term in the original differential equation of motion has been ignored in the investigation. This method is used to study the variation of natural frequency with flow velocity for clamped-clamped, cantilevered, clamped-pinned, pinned-pinned, free-free straight pipe element. It is shown that clamped-clamped, free-free pipe have the highest natural frequency and critical velocity values while cantilevered pipe have the smallest natural frequency for the same mechanical properties. From the vibration effects of mechanical property variation, it is shown that bending stiffness and pipe length variation has large influence on natural frequency and critical velocity. Since the order of transfer matrix is not changed with boundary conditions of pipe element, this method proposed can be easily applied to personal-computer for vibration analysis of pipe element. Furthermore, this method can be extended to three-dimensional system by using a coordinate transformation for the analysis of piping systems.
