Ultrasonic backscattering profiles of the Zr plates(with a thickness of 1.32mm) with/without Be-Zr alloy layer(with a thickness of $100{\mu}m$) were measured at various incidence positions to evaluate the characteristics of Be diffusion layer. Four principal subprofiles were observed in the backward ultrasound radiated from leaky Lamb waves. The angles and the intensities of the subprofile peaks decreased by the stiffening effect of Be layer. Generation and change of the subprofiles were explained by the acoustical property, collective group velocity and leaky factor difference of the plates under consideration. Backward radiation subprofiles turned out to be an useful method for evaluating thin diffusion layers on plates.
Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (AMX) is a cost-efficient biological nitrogen removal process. The coexistence of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in an AMX reactor is an interesting research topic as a nitrogen-related bacterial consortium. In this study, a sequencing batch reactor for AMX (AMX-SBR) was operated with a conventional activated sludge. The AOB in an AMX bioreactor were identified and quantified using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) and real-time qPCR. A T-RFLP assay based on the ammonia monooxygenase subunit A (amoA) gene sequences showed the presence of Nitrosomonas europaea-like AOB in the AMX-SBR. A phylogenetic tree based on the sequenced amoA gene showed that AOB were affiliated with the Nitrosomonas europaea/mobilis cluster. Throughout the enrichment period, the AOB population was stable with predominant Nitrosomonas europaea-like AOB. Two OTUs of amoA_SBR_JJY_20 (FJ577843) and amoA_SBR_JJY_9 (FJ577849) are similar to the clones from AMX-related environments. Real-time qPCR was used to quantify AOB populations over time. Interestingly, the exponential growth of AOB populations was observed during the substrate inhibition of the AMX bacteria. The specific growth rate of AOB under anaerobic conditions was only 0.111 d-1. The growth property of Nitrosomonas europaea-like AOB may provide fundamental information about the metabolic relationship between the AMX bacteria and AOB.
Recently, magnesium alloys are in the spotlight as a promising materials in the fields of automobile parts and electronic appliances due to their merits representing light weight, high specific strength, damping property, shielding of electromagnetic wave and so on. However, magnesium alloys show a poor formability at room temperature because magnesium has HCP crystal structure with limited slip planes and strong basal texture is formed during plastic deformation process such as rolling and extrusion. Therefore, many R&D efforts have been paid for improvement of formability through grain refinement, texture control and various forming technologies. This paper is giving an overview about recent achievements on control of microstructures, forming technologies and magnesium scrap recycling.
One of the important topics to prepare the up-coming era of so-called ‘hydrogen economy’ is hydrogen transmission. Pipeline is conceivably the most economic way to consistently and safely transport a large amount of hydrogen over a long distance, which may be strongly requested in hydrogen economy era. As a good starting point for the purpose, one might wonder whether conventional API pipeline steels as designed for natural gas transmission can be used as the hydrogen pipeline materials or not. To answer the question, here we performed a series of micro-/nano-indentations together with tensile tests on the hydrogen-charged API X65, X70 and X100 steels having different strength level. In this paper, from the results of tensile tests, the hydrogen effects on the mechanical behavior in the API steels are systematically evaluated.
Kimchi was investigated with regard to the sensory properties depending on ethnic group and processing conditions, and to the relationship between its sensory attributes. Sensory panel scores of American in sourness, pungency and crunchiness were significantly higher than those of Korean. The opposite result was performed in sweetness. There were no significant differences between American and Korean in sensory properties of saltiness, hardness and toughness. Salt content in brine was significantly related to saltiness of kimchi at p<0.001. Sensory panel scores of saltiness in kimchi made with 10, 15 and 20% salt solution appeared to be 4.5, 5.8 and 7.1, respectively. Mean values of toughness were 5.7 at 3 days of aging and 4.5 at 10 days. There were no relationship among sensory properties between taste attributes and textural terms of kimchi.

Debris flow is a representative natural disaster in Korea and occurs frequently every year. Recently, it has caused considerable damage to property and considerable loss of life in both mountainous and urban regions. Therefore, It is necessary to estimate the scope of damage for a large area in order to predict the debris flow. A response model such as the random walk model(RWM) can be used as a useful tool instead of a physics-based numerical model. RWM is a probability model that simplifies both debris flows and sedimentation characteristics as a factor of slopes for a subjective site and represents a relatively simple calculation method compared to other debris flow behavior calculation models. Although RWM can be used to analyzing and predicting the scope of damage caused by a debris flow, input variables for terrain conditions are yet to be determined. In this study, optimal input variables were estimated using DEM generated from the Aerial Photograph and LiDAR data of Mt. Umyeon, Seoul, where a large-scale debris flow occurred in 2011. Further, the deposition volume resulting from the debris flow was predicted using the input variables for a specific area in which the deposition volume could not be calculated because of work restoration and the passage of time even though a debris flow occurred there. The accuracy of the model was verified by comparing the result of predicting the deposition volume in the debris flow with the result obtained from a debris flow behavior analysis model, Debris 2D.

Structural damage detection using modal strain energy (MSE) is one of the most efficient and reliable structural health monitoring techniques. However, some of the existing MSE methods have been validated for special types of structures such as beams or steel truss bridges which demands improving the available methods. The purpose of this study is to improve an efficient modal strain energy method to detect and quantify the damage in complex structures at early stage of formation. In this paper, a modal strain energy method was mathematically developed and then numerically applied to a fixed-end beam and a three-story frame including single and multiple damage scenarios in absence and presence of up to five per cent noise. For each damage scenario, all mode shapes and natural frequencies of intact structures and the first five mode shapes of assumed damaged structures were obtained using STRAND7. The derived mode shapes of each intact and damaged structure at any damage scenario were then separately used in the improved formulation using MATLAB to detect the location and quantify the severity of damage as compared to those obtained from previous method. It was found that the improved method is more accurate, efficient and convergent than its predecessors. The outcomes of this study can be safely and inexpensively used for structural health monitoring to minimize the loss of lives and property by identifying the unforeseen structural damages.
2-Aminothiazole ring as a bioisoster of catechol in dopamine has provided with good oral availability and lipophilic property. Selenium was reported to have an improved antioxidant ability and to reduce the loss of dopamine. 2-Aminoindan, is a rigid form of dopamine, was evaluated as a dopamine agonist with low neurotoxocity. In order to develop a novel dopamine agonist, we tried to synthesize the selenazoloaminoindan derivative that is a hybrid structure of aminoindan and aminoselenazole instead of aminothiazole. 2-Indanone-2-oxime was reduced with $TiCl_4$ and $NaBH_4$ to form 2-aminoindan, which was reacted with propionyl chloride to give 2-N-n-propionylaminoindan (2). Compound 2 was reduced with $TiCl_4$ and $NaBH_4$ to afford 2-N-n-propylaminoindan (3) and it was nitrated and reduced to form 5-amino-2-N-n-propylaminoindan (5), which was reacted with KSeCN, $Br_2$, and glacial acetic acid to give 4,6-dibromo-5- amino-2-N-n-propylaminoindan (7) instead of selenazole ring formation. Otherwise, compound 2 was nitrated and hydrogenated to form 5-amino-2-N-n-propionylaminoindan (9), which was treated with KSeCN, $Br_2$, and glacial acetic acid to give 4,6-dibromo-5-amino-2-N-n-propionylaminoindan (10). Compound 9 was cyc1ized with KSeCN and glacial acetic acid in the absence of $Br_2$ to give 6-amino-2-N-(n-propionylamino)selenazolo[4,5-f]indan (11).

The effect of ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) and alkaline activator on the properties of setting, compressive strength, drying shrinkage and resistance of carbonation was assessed to develop high volume slag concrete, the GGBS replacement rate of which was more than 80 percent. The changes in the concrete as the replacement rate of GGBS increases were as follows. Initial and final setting time was delayed by two and a half hours, and the compressive strength development properties of concrete in early and long term age were decreased. Drying shrinkage was satisfactory as below $6{\times}10^{-4}$ in every mixture, and yet showed a tangible trend by replacement rate. Carbonation was materially increased. Setting time and early strength development property, however, were extremely advanced by the addition of the alkaline activator. While drying shrinkage was improved by the alkaline activator, resistance to carbonation was not.
In the modern society, as the city grows and constructive technology gradually develops, land usage has been sophisticated and three-dimensionalized. Consequently, issues such as property ownership and legal claim over ground and underground space have been triggered, which disclose the problems of using two-dimensional cadastral management system. Numerous researches on building three-dimensional cadastral are ongoing such as defining the right relationship of land space and providing the registration and management scheme so as to solve the imminent matter. It is the chief aim of this study to increase efficiency by analyzing the vocational practices through adding on necessary sections and properties for current registration to original research work. If three-dimensional cadastral management system is once constructed, highly qualified services for citizens will be available by providing accurate land related information swiftly, which can result in inevitable improvement of efficiency at work. Hence, this thesis will suggest the internationally suitable feature model development method in terms of standardization by probing into the factual profession to derive each attributes and properties that are related to three-dimensional cadastral and affix them to the classified item requisites of initial research studies.
