  • the change of physical properties (thickness, weight, air permeability) and mechanical properties(abrasion resistance breaking load and displacement) of samples were determined after heat exposure by a RPP tester. The effect of exposure time and heat flux intensity on the changes and the relationship between physical properties and mechanical properties were investigated. FR treated cotton Kevlar/PBI and Nomex with different structureal characteristics were chosen for specimens. The changes of physical properties and mechanical properties were calculated based on their initial values before heat exposure. The longer exposure time and the high heat flux intensity the more changes of those properties. Heat flux intensity was more effective on the changes, The showed to be affected by an interplay of shrinkage and pyrolysis products loss. The changes of thickness and abrasion resistance showed to be higher for plain weave fabric and those of air permeabiliyt and breaking load and displacement for twill weave fabric. While FR treated cotton which have high RPP value experienced serious and detrimental changes after heat exposure Kevlar/PBI which has low RPP value showed no high changes. In conclusion it could be confirmed that when total performance of a protective clothing is estimated retention capability of physical and mechanical properties after heat exposure as well as RPP value must be considered.

  • The relationship between the properties of two kinds of calcined cokes and graphitized forming bodies were examined. The microstructures of the forming bodies are already determined to some degree at the stage of baking. Calcined cokes as well as baked forming bodies using the same coke as filler were heat treated at various temperatures and their structural and properties changes with heat treated temperature were studied. The transition in properties changes with heat treatment in forming bodies were observed around $2000^{\circ}C$. The characteristics of the finial graphite bodies are strongly dependent on the properties of the raw material cokes.

  • Partially oriented polyester yarn (PET POY) was treated in the unrestrained state using various solvents at different temperatures. Interactions between PET POY & solvents were estimated by the changes of microstructure, morphology and mechanical properties. The correlation between the changes of microstructure & morphology and the changes of mechanical properties was also studied. TCE, Dioxane, O-DCB, DMF, and BA were found to be active solvents, while Iso-AA and water were found to be weak solvents. PET POY was affected mainly by the solvents when treated with active solvents and affected mainly by heat when treated with weak solvents. Changes by the solvent treatment in microstructure and morphology were : an increase in crystallinity, a change in birefringence, a shrinkage in length, and a change in DSC curve. As for the changes in mechanical properties, findings in the PET POY when treated with solvents were : a decrease in stress-at-break, a change in yield stress, an increase in strain-at-break & yield strain, and a decrease in initial modulus. Changes in microstructure and morphology directly affected the mechanical properties.

  • Electrical properties of electrochromic (EC) InN thin films prepared by rf ion plating were studied. There was a correlation between the electrical properties and the electrochromism in the InN films, particularly, carrier concentration changes were responsible for the electrical resistivity changes of the films due to the electrochromism. These carrier concentration changes were caused by chemisorbed hydroxyl groups and protons. From these results, it was proved that the carrier concentration changes of the InN films was responsible for the electrochromism in the visible and near-infrared region.

  • It is advantageous to use NDE methods to assess the mechanical properties of materials since the conventional method is time-consuming and sometimes requires cutting of sample from the component. The NDE parameters such as ultrasonic velocity and attenuation, electric resistivity, and magnetic coercive force and remanance have been utilized to evaluate changes of material properties due to heat treatment condition. It has been found that changes of materials properties under quenched and tempered/PWHT treatments could not be detected using EMAT and Electrical resistivity methods. However, victors hardness and magnetic hysteresis loop decreased with heat treatment procedures. These results were obtained using 3Cr-lMo-0.25V steel. The magnetic parameters were found to be most sensitive to changes of material properties.

  • Liquid whole egg (LWE) was subjected to high hydrostatic pressure (HHP), a consecutive combination of nisin and HHP (nisin-HHP), or a consecutive combination of ultrasound and HHP (ultrasound-HHP), and functional properties of processed LWE were compared to those of raw LWE. Little changes in foaming and emulsifying properties were observed by the application of HHP alone and the combined process of nisin and HHP. In contrast, ultrasound-HHP combination resulted in significant changes in color, foaming, and emulsifying properties. The maintenance of functional properties after HHP treatment agreed with expectation, because the HHP processing condition had been selected where minimal rheological changes had occurred.

  • The effects of opening, carding, and repeated drawings on single fiber and bundle cotton characteristics were studied by employing $Mantis^{\circledR}$, $AFIS^{\circledR}$ and HVI Testers. Some of the significant changes in single fiber properties were found to be due to process parameters as well as the changes in the fiber crimps, parallelness of fibers within HVI beards, and the actual changes in the tensile properties of the fibers. The study showed that the HVI test data taken just prior to spinning had the highest correlation with the yam tensile properties. Based on the study results, we point out the potential of HVI for future quality and process control in spinning by recommending a set of expanded HVI output that is more scientific and comprehensive for the future control needs.

  • Buckling capacity of compression members may change due to inadvertent changes in the member section dimensions or material properties. This may be the result of repair, modification of section properties or degradation of the material properties. In some occasions, enhancement of buckling capacity of compression members may be achieved through splicing of plates or utilization of composite materials. It is very important for a designer to predict the buckling resistance of the compression member and the important parameters that affect its buckling strength once changes in section and/or material properties took place. This paper presents an analytical approach for determining the buckling capacity of a compression member whose geometric and/or material properties has been altered resulting in a multi-step non-uniform section. This analytical solution accommodates the changes and modifications to the material and/or section properties of the compression member due to the factors mentioned. The analytical solution provides adequate information and a methodology that is useful during the design stage as well as the repair stage of compression members. Three case studies are presented to show that the proposed analytical solution is an efficient method for predicting the buckling strength of compression members that their section and/or material properties have been altered due to splicing, coping, notching, ducting and corrosion.

  • Purpose : Forward head posture (FHP) is one of the most common postural malalignment of the cranio-cervical region. Previous studies have reported that FHP might affect both temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and cervical muscles, but still remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to compare the changes of craniovertebral angle (CVA) and muscle properties after smartphone use in healthy individuals with and without FHP. Methods : Fifteen healthy individuals aged 18 to 22 years were included. CVA was evaluated using Dartfish motion analysis, and the subjects were divided into two groups according to their CVA: a FHP group (n = 7, CVA less than 48 °) and a control group (n = 8, CVA more than 48 °). MyotonPro was used to measure muscle properties of masseter, digastric and sternocleidomastoid muscles (SCM). Each subject underwent 15-minutes of smartphone task (web browsing or video watching) in relaxed sitting posture. CVA and muscles properties were assessed both before and after the smartphone task. Results : There were significant changes in post measurements of CVA between the groups. Masseter muscle showed significant differences in pre and post measurements of all muscle properties, and digastric muscle showed significance only in muscle tone. Amount of changes (post-pre), however, showed no significant difference in this study. Conclusion : 15-minutes of smartphone task did not affect CVA and muscle properties of masseter, digastric and SCM in both groups, however, there were significant changes in pre and post measurements of CVA and some muscle properties of masseter and digastric muscles. Therefore, CVA, masseter and digastric muscles might be significantly changed in a heavy duration of smartphone usage more than 15-minutes. Further studies are needed regarding duration of smartphone task, assessments in other various TMJ muscle groups, and participants with pathological FHP conditions.

  • Tencel is a high quality cellulosic fiber, which is controlled and processed by an environmentally sound route. But, the point about tencel and the reason why it achieves its unique touch in its finished state is that it is a fibrillating fiber. That means it can take a great deal of punishment during the finishing process, which raise the fiber to produce the characteristics handle, without destroying the cloth. The aim of cellulase treatment is to improve appearence of tencel, plus the fiber ends protruding from the fabric surface. But enzymatic hydrolysis can weakens the fiber ends and changes the properties of fabrics. This study examined about the changes of properties according to several conditions and effect of cellulase to fibril of tencel. The results are as follows. The weight loss was occurred, tensile strength was decreased, softness was increased. And cellulase treatment reduced amount of fibril.
