This paper aims to review methods for computing orthogonal projection of points onto curves and surfaces, which are given in implicit or parametric form or as point clouds. Special emphasis is place on orthogonal projection onto conics along with reviews on orthogonal projection of points onto curves and surfaces in implicit and parametric form. Except for conics, computation methods are classified into two groups based on the core approaches: iterative and subdivision based. An extension of orthogonal projection of points to orthogonal projection of curves onto surfaces is briefly explored. Next, the discussion continues toward orthogonal projection of points onto point clouds, which spawns a different branch of algorithms in the context of orthogonal projection. The paper concludes with comments on guidance for an appropriate choice of methods for various applications.

In non-rigid image registration, the Jacobian determinant of the estimated deformation should be positive everywhere since physical deformations are always invertible. We propose a constrained optimization technique at ensures the positiveness of Jacobian determinant for cubic B-spline based deformation. We derived sufficient conditions for positive Jacobian determinant by bounding the differences of consecutive coefficients. The parameter set that satisfies the conditions is convex; it is the intersection of simple half spaces. We solve the optimization problem using a gradient projection method with Dykstra's cyclic projection algorithm. Analytical results, simulations and experimental results with inhale/exhale CT images with comparison to other methods are presented.

This paper presents the mosaic method that the video sequence with shift and rotation information after Mellin Transform. The results are used to compute the projection matrix for each image registration. So before registration, we process camera calibration in order to reduce the image warp by camera and then compute the global projection matrix for image registration for reducing errors from rut image to last image. This paper describes the mosaic method that compute duplication and movement information quickly and robust noise using projection matrix on Mellin Transform.
In this paper, we propose a pulmonary nodule registration for the tracking of lung nodules in sequential CT scans. Our method consists of following five steps. First, a translational mismatch is corrected by aligning the center of optimal bounding volumes including each segmented lung. Second, coronal maximum intensity projection(MIP) images including a rib structure which has the highest intensity region in baseline and follow-up CT series are generated. Third, rigid transformations are optimized by normalized average density differences between coronal MIP images. Forth, corresponding nodule candidates are defined by Euclidean distance measure after rigid registration. Finally, template matching is performed between the nodule template in baseline CT image and the search volume in follow-up CT image for the nodule matching. To evaluate the result of our method, we performed the visual inspection, accuracy and processing time. The experimental results show that nodules in serial CT scans can be rapidly and correctly registered by coronal MIP-based rigid registration and local template matching.
An on-line registration technique is presented to register multi-view range images for the 3D reconstruction of real objects. Using a range camera, we first acquire range images and photometric images continuously. In the range images, we divide object and background regions using a predefined threshold value. For the coarse registration of the range images, the centroid of the images are used. After refining the registration of range images using a projection-based technique, we use a modified KLT(Kanade-Lucas-Tomasi) tracker to match photometric features in the object images. Using the modified KLT tracker, we can track image features fast and accurately. If a range image fails to register, we acquire new range images and try to register them continuously until the registration process resumes. After enough range images are registered, they are integrated into a 3D model in offline step. Experimental results and error analysis show that the proposed method can be used to reconstruct 3D model very fast and accurately.

3D geometric modeling of an object of interest has been intensively investigated in many fields including CAD/CAM and computer graphics. Traditionally, CAD and geometric modeling tools are widely used to create geometric models that have nearly the same shape of 3D real objects or satisfy designers intent. Recently, with the help of the reverse engineering (RE) technology, we can easily acquire 3D point data from the objects and create 3D geometric models that perfectly fit the scanned data more easily and fast. In this paper, we present 3D geometric model generation based on a stereo vision system (SVS) using random pattern projection. A triangular mesh is considered as the resulting geometric model. In order to obtain reasonable results with the SVS-based geometric model generation, we deal with many steps including camera calibration, stereo matching, scanning from multiple views, noise handling, registration, and triangular mesh generation. To acquire reliable stere matching, we project random patterns onto the object. With experiments using various random patterns, we propose several tips helpful for the quality of the results. Some examples are given to show their usefulness.

In this paper, a registration method is presented to register partial 3D point clouds, acquired from a multi-view camera, for 3D reconstruction of an indoor environment. In general, conventional registration methods require a high computational complexity and much time for registration. Moreover, these methods are not robust for 3D point cloud which has comparatively low precision. To overcome these drawbacks, a projection-based registration method is proposed. First, depth images are refined based on temporal property by excluding 3D points with a large variation, and spatial property by filling up holes referring neighboring 3D points. Second, 3D point clouds acquired from two views are projected onto the same image plane, and two-step integer mapping is applied to enable modified KLT (Kanade-Lucas-Tomasi) to find correspondences. Then, fine registration is carried out through minimizing distance errors based on adaptive search range. Finally, we calculate a final color referring colors of corresponding points and reconstruct an indoor environment by applying the above procedure to consecutive scenes. The proposed method not only reduces computational complexity by searching for correspondences on a 2D image plane, but also enables effective registration even for 3D points which have low precision. Furthermore, only a few color and depth images are needed to reconstruct an indoor environment.

Projection Mapping, also known as Spatial Augmented Reality(SAR) has attracted much attention recently and used for many division, which can augment physical objects with projected various virtual replications. However, conventional approaches towards projection mapping have faced some limitations. Target objects' geometric transformation property does not considered, and movements of flexible objects-like paper are hard to handle, such as folding and bending as natural interaction. Also, precise registration and tracking has been a cumbersome process in the past. While there have been many researches on Projection Mapping on static objects, dynamic projection mapping that can keep tracking of a moving flexible target and aligning the projection at interactive level is still a challenge. Therefore, this paper propose a new method using Unity3D and ARToolkit for high-speed robust tracking and dynamic projection mapping onto non-rigid deforming objects rapidly and interactively. The method consists of four stages, forming cubic bezier surface, process of rendering transformation values, multiple marker recognition and tracking, and webcam real time-lapse imaging. Users can fold, curve, bend and twist to make interaction. This method can achieve three high-quality results. First, the system can detect the strong deformation of objects. Second, it reduces the occlusion error which reduces the misalignment between the target object and the projected video. Lastly, the accuracy and the robustness of this method can make result values to be projected exactly onto the target object in real-time with high-speed and precise transformation tracking.
It is well known that vital statistics is of great importance as basic data for establishing various range of national policies. Especially, vital statistics is important among demographic information for monitoring and evaluating the population policy, for constructing life table, for making population projection, and for studying various aspects of the society. In principle, the production of vital statistics is based on the registration system. It is, however, still observed that there are some limitations in utilizing fully the registration system due to the inherent problems such as problems in its coverage, accuracies and timeliness. Thus, as an alternative, many countries conduct survey on vital statistics in order to supplement the registration system and obtain in-depth data. Korea is no exception in this aspect. The National Bureau of Statistics carries out the so-called Continuous Demographic Survey. This is a kind of multi-round retrospective survey, covering 32, 000 households and having reference period of one month. The survey has also characteristics of multi-subject sample. Thus, surveys on economic activity status of population, house-hold income & expenditure, and social indicators are together conducted with the same sample. It is, however, found that the survey itself tends to have some quality problems. Especially, the quality problems connected with field data collection are summarized as coverage error, non-response error and response error. Although it is inevitable not to be free from these errors, we should make all our efforts to reduce the errors. The probable schemes pointed out in this paper are as follows : 1) the strengthening formal quality control activities, 2) the review of the survey method, i. e., the combining interview method with mail-sending and mail-back method or pick-up method, 3) well documentation for various cases found in every stage of data collection, and 4) the strengthening the analytical activities. It is, also, emphasized that sincerity of planners and interviewers is the most important factor among other things.
In this paper, we propose an automatic lower extremity vessel extraction based on rigid registration and bone elimination techniques in CT and CT angiography images. First, automatic partitioning of the lower extremity based on the anatomy is proposed to consider the local movement of the bone. Second, rigid registration based on distance map is performed to estimate the movement of the bone between CT and CT angiography images. Third, bone elimination and vessel masking techniques are proposed to remove bones in CT angiography image and to prevent the vessel near to bone from eroding. Fourth, post-processing based on vessel tracking is proposed to reduce the effect of misalignment and noises like a cartilage. For the evaluation of our method, we performed the visual inspection, accuracy measures and processing time. For visual inspection, the results of applying general subtraction, registered subtraction and proposed method are compared using volume rendering and maximum intensity projection. For accuracy evaluation, intensity distributions of CT angiography image, subtraction based method and proposed method are analyzed. Experimental result shows that bones are accurately eliminated and vessels are robustly extracted without the loss of other structure. The total processing time of thirteen patient datasets was 40 seconds on average.
