The East African ionosphere (3°S-18°N, 32°E-50°E) was mapped using Total Electron Content (TEC) measurements from ground-based GPS receivers situated at Asmara, Mekelle, Bahir Dar, Robe, Arbaminch, and Nairobi. Assuming a thin shell ionosphere at 350 km altitude, we project the Ionospheric Pierce Point (IPP) of a slant TEC measurement with an elevation angle of >10° to its corresponding location on the map. We then infer the estimated values at any point of interest from the vertical TEC values at the projected locations by means of interpolation. The total number of projected IPPs is in the range of 24-66 at any one time. Since the distribution of the projected IPPs is irregularly spaced, we have used an inverse distance weighted interpolation method to obtain a spatial grid resolution of 1°×1° latitude and longitude, respectively. The TEC maps were generated for the year 2008, with a 2 hr temporal resolution. We note that TEC varies diurnally, with a peak in the late afternoon (at 1700 LT), due to the equatorial ionospheric anomaly. We have observed higher TEC values at low latitudes in both hemispheres compared to the magnetic equatorial region, capturing the ionospheric distribution of the equatorial anomaly. We have also confirmed the equatorial seasonal variation in the ionosphere, characterized by minimum TEC values during the solstices and maximum values during the equinoxes. We evaluate the reliability of the map, demonstrating a mean error (difference between the measured and interpolated values) range of 0.04-0.2 TECU (Total Electron Content Unit). As more measured TEC values become available in this region, the TEC map will be more reliable, thereby allowing us to study in detail the equatorial ionosphere of the African sector, where ionospheric measurements are currently very few.
Many studies on climate change and its impacts use a single climate scenario. However, one climate scenario may not accurately predict the potential impacts of climate change. We estimated temperature and precipitation changes by 2070 using 17 of the CMIP5 Global Climate Models (GCMs) and two emission scenarios for three spatial domains: the Asian continent, six East Asia countries, and South Korea. For South Korea, the range of increased minimum temperature was lower than for the ranges of the larger regions, but the range of projected future precipitation was higher. The range of increased minimum temperatures was between $1.3^{\circ}C$ and $5.2^{\circ}C$, and the change in precipitation ranged from - 42.4 mm (- 3.2%) and + 389.8 mm (+ 29.6%) for South Korea. The range of increased minimum temperatures was between $2.3^{\circ}C$ and $8.5^{\circ}C$ for East Asia countries and was between $2.1^{\circ}C$ and $7.4^{\circ}C$ for the Asian continent, and the change in precipitation ranged from 28.8 mm (+ 6.3%) and 156.8 mm (+ 34.3%) for East Asia countries and from 32.4 mm (+ 5.5%) and 126.2 mm (+ 21.3%) for the Asian continent. We suggest climate change studies in South Korea should not use a single GCM or only an ensemble climate model's output and we recommend to use GFDL-CM3 and INMCM4 GCMs to bracket projected change for use in other national climate change studies to represent the range of projected future climate conditions.
In this review, we aimed to synthesize the current knowledge on the observed and projected effects of climate change on the ecosystems of Korea (i.e., the Republic of Korea (ROK) or South Korea), as well as the main causes of vulnerability and options for adaptation in these ecosystems based on a range of ecological and biogeographical data. To this end, we compiled a set of peer-reviewed papers published since 2014. We found that publication of climate-related studies on plants has decreased in the field of plant phenology and physiology, whereas such publication has rapidly increased in plant and animal community ecology, reflecting the range shifts and abundance change that are occurring under climate change. Plant phenology studies showed that climate change has increased growing seasons by advancing the timing of flowering and budburst while delaying the timing of leafing out. Community ecology studies indicated that the future ranges of cold-adapted plants and animals could shrink or shift toward northern and high-elevation areas, whereas the ranges of warm-adapted organisms could expand and/or shift toward the areas that the aforementioned cold-adapted biota previously occupied. This review provides useful information and new insights that will improve understanding of climate change effects on the ecosystems of Korea. Moreover, it will serve as a reference for policy-makers seeking to establish future sectoral adaptation options for protection against climate change.

Objective: To estimate the projected cancer risk attributable to diagnostic cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) performed under different exposure settings for orthodontic purposes in children and adults. Methods: We collected a list of CBCT machines and their specifications from 38 orthodontists. Organ doses were estimated using median and maximum exposure settings of 105 kVp/156.8 mAs and 130 kVp/200 mAs, respectively. The projected cancer risk attributable to CBCT procedures performed 1-3 times within 2 years was calculated for children (aged 5 and 10 years) and adult (aged 20, 30, and 40 years) male and female patients. Results: For maximum exposure settings, the mean lifetime fractional ratio (LFR) was 14.28% for children and 0.91% for adults; this indicated that the risk to children was 16 times the risk to adults. For median exposure settings, the mean LFR was 5.25% and 0.58% for children and adults, respectively. The risk of cancer decreased with increasing age. For both median and maximum exposure settings, females showed a higher risk of cancer than did males in all age groups. Cancer risk increased with an increase in the frequency of CBCT procedures within a given period. Conclusions: The projected dental CBCT-associated cancer risk spans over a wide range depending on the machine parameters and image acquisition settings. Children and female patients are at a higher risk of developing cancer associated with diagnostic CBCT. Therefore, the use of diagnostic CBCT should be justified, and protective measures should be taken to minimize the harmful biological effects of radiation.

This paper proposes a planar projection DV-hop location algorithm (PTCDV-hop) based on the LED semi-angle at half power (SAHP, which accounts for LED SAHP characteristics in visible light communication (VLC)) and uses the DV-hop algorithm for range-free localization. Distances between source nodes and nodes positioned in three-dimensional indoor space are projected onto a two-dimensional plane to reduce complexity. Circles are structured by assigning source nodes (projected onto the horizontal plane of the assigned nodes) to be centers and the projection distances as radii. The proposed PTCDV-hop algorithm then determines the position of node location coordinates using the trilateral-weighted-centroid algorithm. Simulation results show localization errors of the proposed algorithm are on the order of magnitude of a millimeter when three sources are used. The PTCDV-hop algorithm has higher positioning accuracy and stronger dominance than the traditional DV-hop algorithm.

A modern MEMS resonator is a micro-scale structure operated over a high frequency range. In order to predict its resonant behavior in a design process, High-frequency response analysis (Hi-FRA) is demanded. Algebraic substructuring (AS) is known as a fast numerical technique to construct an eigenspace for FR and frequency sweep (FS) algorithm efficiently solves the frequency response system projected on the eigenspace. However, the existing FS algorithm using AS is developed for low-FRA, say over the range 1Hz-2KHz. In this work, we extend the FS algorithm using AS for FRA over an arbitrary frequency range. Therefore, it can be efficiently applied to systems operated at a high frequency, say over the range 230MHz-250MHz. The success of the proposed method is demonstrated by Hi-FRA of a checkerboard resonator.
Existing methods to process continuous range queries are not scalable. In particular, as the number of continuous range queries on a large number of moving objects becomes larger, their performance degrades significantly. We propose a novel query indexing method called the projected attribute bit (PAB)-based query index. We project a two-dimensional continuous range query on each axis to get two one-dimensional bit lists. Since the queries are transformed to bit lists and query evaluation is performed by bit operations, the storage cost of indexing and query evaluation time are reduced significantly. Through various experiments, we show that our method outperforms the containment-encoded squares-based indexing method, which is one of the most recently proposed methods.
In this paper range measurement systems are designed using an ultrasonic sensor and a camera. An ultrasonic sensor provides the range measurement to a target quickly and simply but its low resolution is a disadvantage. We tackle this problem by employing a camera. Instead using a stereoscopic sensor, which is widely used for 3D sensing but requires a computationally intensive stereo matching, the range is measured by focusing and structured lighting. In focusing a straightforward focusing measure named as MMDH(min-max difference in histogram) is proposed and compared with existing techniques. In the method of structure lighting, light stripes projected by a beam projector are used. Compared to those using a laser beam projector, the designed system can be constructed easily in a low-budget. The system equation is derived by analysing the sensor geometry. A sensing scenario using the systems designed is in two steps. First, when better accuracy is required, measurements by ultrasonic sensing and focusing of a camera are fused by MLE(maximum likelihood estimation). Second, when the target is in a range of particular interest, a range map of the target scene is obtained by using structured lighting technique. The systems designed showed measurement accuracy up to 0.3[mm] approximately in experiments.
Using the two-dimensional Wulff plot, the equilibrium shape of a sapphire crystal was investigated as a function of surface energy anisotropy. Depending on the relative values of surface energy for various facet planes, the projected shape of equilibrium sapphire was determined to be rectangle, parallelogram, hexagon or octagon. The results are compared with the experimentally observed shapes of internal cavities of submicron range in sapphire single crystals.
