The analysis of learners' difficulties in programming learning (프로그래밍 학습에서 학습자의 어려움 분석)

  • Programming is excellent tool on realizing ideas. However students often complain of difficulties due to requiring the strict programming grammar and the highly thinking. Although various researches have been conducted to teach the programming easily for students, it should precede the analysis of what and why programming concept is difficult for learners. In this study, we analyzed what and why the programming concept is difficult for novice learners in basic programming education. Based on the results, we suggested: improving problem-solving skills based on accurate understanding and internalization on the programming concept, on reducing error between thought and execution results through the creation of sophisticated algorithms and on offering a variety of troubleshooting experience, establishing strategies to think freely for problem-solving process, and promoting the effectiveness of the learning through the learning procedure design.

  • Using robots in the programming classes may help to induce learners' interest and motivation. However, simple introduction of new media, such as robots, may cause to increase learners' interest level temporarily, but also may give cognitive overload and offense against learning motivation. We developed a robot programming course to induce intrinsic motivation and to reduce cognitive load for learners in the programming education. And then, we implemented the developed course in college programming classes and analysed the educational effects of robot programming learning on novice learners' flow level. We found that robot programming course was helpful in enhancing novice learners' flow level. Especially, the element of 'autotelic experience', which explains an intrinsic motivation, was higher than conventional programming course group. It means that the developed strategies for robot programming course provides positive effects on learners' intrinsic motivation.

Development of Python Education Program with Computational Thinking

  • In this paper, we propose a python education program that applies computational thinking for non-majors and programming beginners. In this study, we focus on the basics of program logic, breaking away from the difficult grammar and memorization-oriented programming education. And by applying the problem-solving procedure of computational thinking, we propose an educational program that allows non-majors and programming beginners to learn programming easily. In this paper, an 8-week educational program was applied to middle school students with little text coding experience. and through a post-satisfaction survey, it was found that their confidence in programming increased, and they were able to apply computational thinking could be applied to life and other subjects. Although the importance of programming education is being emphasized, it is expected that it will be used as a useful educational program when composing program education for non-majors and beginners in programming for learners who still find it difficult to learn programming.

  • This paper discusses an application of mathematical programming techniques in the paper industry in determining optimal parent roll widths. Parent rolls are made from the reels produced at wide paper machines by slitting them to more manageable widths. The problem is finding a set of the slitting patterns that will minimize the trim loss involved in the sheeting operation. Two programming models, one linear and one mixed integer linear, are presented in this paper. Also presented are the computational experience, the model sensitivity, and the comparison of the optimal solutions with the simulated operational data.

  • This paper concerns the issues involved in development and use of manufacturing simulation software using the Object Oriented Programming System(OOPS) in a computer integrated manufacturing environment, with particular emphasis on large scale integrated circuit fabrication. We introduce OOPS and compare it with existing simulation packages as well as general purpose languages. Our implementation of OOPS shows numerous advantages over the other programming systems. Based on our experience, guidelines for devloping manufacturing simulation systems in OOPS are discussed.

Development and Application of an Online-based Arduino Programming Experience Program

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and apply an online-based Arduino programming experience program. In this study, the program was developed and applied based on the contents presented in the ADDIE model and Lee's model. The results of this study were as follows. First, two types of educational program were developed for online use by students of the free semester system. Second, the program content included practical materials such as teaching websites and video lectures. Third, the developed program was applied a total of three times in the school environment and when the student did not attend school. Fourth, analysis of student satisfaction confirmed that the students were satisfied with the development program. The content of this study will serve as a reference for instructors who plan online-based hands-on activities in places where instructors are not readily available, such as islands or mountainous areas.

  • This study examines the changes in learners' positive/negative perceptions of classroom experience and actual utilisation of AI chatbots in response to the recent changes in education trends caused by generative AI. AI chatbots were utilised in web programming classes for six classes of engineering students over two semesters. The learners' experience and usage were analysed from the beginning of the semester through surveys until the submission of midterm and final examination reports. The study's results indicate that the chatbot enhanced learning by providing Q/A feedback and solving practical problems. Additionally, the perception of the chatbot improved from midterm to the end of the course. The study also drew meaningful conclusions about the issue of community disconnection (personalisation) in the classroom and how to use it as educational software. This research is significant for the development of generative AI-based software.

  • It has been reported that programming education has a positive effect on 'improvement of problem solving skills' within the domain of information subject. Improvement of problem solving skills through education programming was confirmed through various variables, such as gender and programming method. This study aims to investigate the proper programming method of each learner by dividing the characteristics of learners according to their characteristics. To achieve our goal, we chose 62 S high school students enrolled in a programming class as the subjects of our study. The results of this study conveyed that project preference and gender can affect the achievement of the individual, whereas programming experience can affect the achievement of the team. This study provides suggestions of how to pursue a programming class according to learner characteristics as well as indicate which characteristics we should take into account.

  • In recent creativity becomes a new request in the knowledge and information age. Robot programming education is an effective teaching method for improvement of creativity. Existing robot programming tools includes text-based or GUI-based development environment. Most of programming tools provide a simple tutorial system without interactive activity for beginners. In this paper, we propose an online robot programming education system based on web2.0, which embedded collaborative code creating tool, interactive tutorial chat and video conference tool to support collaborative code creating via web 2.0. Knowledge sharing tool allows users to share their collaborative source code. Besides, it makes users gained the experience and knowledge of program designing efficiently.

  • In accordance with the 2015 Revised Practical Curriculum, software education for elementary school students will focus on making software and not using software. Therefore, we must revise the computer education curriculum at national universities of education to include classes on programming. In this study, I surveyed computer education students to learn more about their programming experience as well as their understanding of and necessity for software education. Based on results of the survey, I found that students had a strong understanding of software education and that they recognized its importance; however, students who had not experience related to programming education had a weak the understanding and necessity for software developing education. I suggested that software-related courses should open as a major subjects at the universities.
