  • A forecast of slope behavior during catastrophic events, such as earthquakes is crucial to recognize the risk of slope failure. This paper endeavors to eliminate the significant supposition of predefined slip surfaces in the slope stability analysis, which questions the relevance of simple conventional methods under seismic conditions. To overcome such limitations, a methodology dependent on the slip line hypothesis, which permits an automatic generation of slip surfaces, is embraced to trace the extreme slope face under static and seismic conditions. The effect of earthquakes is considered using the pseudo-static approach. The current outcomes developed from a parametric study endorse a non-linear slope surface as the extreme profile, which is in accordance with the geomorphological aspect of slopes. The proposed methodology is compared with the finite element limit analysis to ensure credibility. Through the design charts obtained from the current investigation, the stability of slopes can be assessed under seismic conditions. It can be observed that the extreme slope profile demands a flat configuration to endure the condition of the limiting equilibrium at a higher level of seismicity. However, a concurrent enhancement in the shear strength of the slope medium suppresses this tendency by offering greater resistance to the seismic inertial forces induced in the medium. Unlike the traditional linear slopes, the extreme slope profiles mostly exhibit a steeper layout over a significant part of the slope height, thus ensuring a more optimized solution to the slope stability problem. Further, the susceptibility of the Longnan slope failure in the Huining-Wudu seismic belt is predicted using the current plasticity approach, which is found to be in close agreement with a case study reported in the literature. Finally, the concept of equivalent single or multi-tiered planar slopes is explored through an example problem, which exhibits the appropriateness of the proposed non-linear slope geometry under actual field conditions.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate treatment effects of bionator in Class II division 1 malocclusion by FEM(Finite Element Method). The 73 subjects were classified into good result group and poor result group in reference to posttreatment molar relation, posttreatment overbite and overjet, posttreatment profile, and relapse. Pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalograms were taken and FEM was performed. The results were as follow; 1. There was no statistical significance in treatment changes between the sexes, and between the treatment result groups. 2. Treatment changes were not significantly different among the age groups. 3. The effect of treatment period groups on skeletal and dentoalveolar changes were analyzed using ANOVA. Body of maxilla, upper incisor, anterior face, ramus, upper anterior face, lower anterior face and treatment effect were correlated with the treatment period, but correlation coefficients were low. 4. The results of present investigation confirm that Class II bionator can assist in the correction of Class II division 1 malocclusion, mainly due to dentoalveolar changes. 5. There is significant difference in skeletal and dentoalveolar pattern between good result group and poor result group. In poor result group, maxilla was relatively downward and backward rotated, mandible was relatively backward rotated, upper incisor was in relatively lingual position, lower incisor was in relatively labial position.

  • Increasing communication through social media forming impression becomes more important. In this research, how three stimulus can build the impression of Twitter Account Owner(TAO) such as the types of the profile pictures, the types of timeline messages and the number of followers. We analysed the feelings of respondents when they face TAO's formal picture and informal picture, informative message and normal message, the number of followers. We, in addition, measured the willingness of respondents whether they want to develop their relationship online and offline as well. As a result, informative message draws positive reliability and makes respondent want to build deeper relationship with TAO at online. Respondent answered TAO's informal picture was more likable than formal picture and more reliable when informative message and formal picture were provided together. Our study shows that there are actual differences at attitudes of respondents by the types of the profile pictures and the types of timeline messages. Thus, we can conclude that TAOs can modify their impressions at online as they hope to.

  • Wear and rolling contact fatigue (RCF) defects are most important causes of rail damage, and often interaction competitive at present railway track. Head check is one of rolling contact fatigue (RCF) defects, and generally occurs in mild circular curves and transition curves that are set at both ends of sharp circular curves. Wear tends to limit the crack growth of head checks by removing the material from the RCF surface. In order to clarify the conditions of the occurrence and growth of head checks, the authors measured the interacting forces between wheels and rails and the angle of attack of wheelset, and carried out contact analyses using the actual profile data of wheels and rails. The effects of the lateral force, the contact geometry, and the wear rate at rail gauge comer on the formation of head checks were also analyzed by using the worn profiles of actual wheels and rails and the data obtained by a track inspection car. Some specific range of wear rate at the gauge comer was identified as having close relation with occurrence of head checks.

  • The Profile of Mood States (POMS) is the most widely used self-report instrument for the measurement of affect or mood in clinical and nonclinical populations. This paper reports on the translation and testing of a Korean version of the POMS. The translation involved three steps: translation, checking agreement, and panel discussions to arrive at consensus. Then, the Korean version of the POMS was tested with a sample of 47 healthy Koreans who lived in the U.S.; they completed the instrument in the morning, at the beginning of work and in the evening, at the end of work. Internal consistencies for the total scale and subscales were high (alphas = .93 and .94). Face and content validity and the cultural relevance of the Korean version of the POMS were tested through review by five bilingual Korean nursing scholars who were familiar with Korean culture and with the current literature on affect, feeling or mood in both English and Korean. The Korean version of the POMS was then compared with the Haeok Fatigue Behavior Check-list and demonstrated with concurrent validity (r = .87, p < .001). Construct validity was established by demonstrating significant differences between the scores on the Fatigue and Vigor subscales (p < .001) at the beginning work and at the end of work.

  • Cavitation related erosion damages on semi-spade rudder generally occur at around leading edge of lower-face and behind gap of lower pintle. To get the idea of gap entrance profile for the latter case, a series of tests with large models has been carried out at MOERI. In the tests, the flow pattern around lower pintle have been investigated and visualized by high speed camera. Additionally, cavitation inception tests and pressure measurements have also been conducted for better comparison. As a result a new model (F rudder) has been developed. The new model turned out to have stable pressure distribution along the surface and so the cavitation inception speeds within ${\pm}5^{\circ}$ of rudder angle were delayed approx. 4 knots in average.

  • Background: Most of cleft lip and palate patients have the esthetic and functional problems of midfacial deficiencies due to innate developmental tendency and scar tissues from repeated operations. In these cases, maxillary protraction is required for the harmonious facial esthetics and functional occlusion. Case presentation: A 7-year old boy had been diagnosed as severe maxillary constriction due to unilateral complete cleft lip and palate. The author tried to correct the secondary deformity by early distraction osteogenesis with the aim of avoiding marked psychological impact from peers of elementary school. From 1999 to 2006, repeated treatments, which consisted of Le Fort I osteotomy and face mask distraction, and complementary maxillary protraction using miniplates were performed including orthodontics. But, final facial profile was not satisfactory, which needs compromising surgery. Conclusions: The result of this study suggests that if early distraction treatment is performed before facial skeletal growth is completed, an orthognathic surgery or additional distraction may be needed later. Maxillofacial plastic and reconstructive surgeons should notify this point when they plan early distraction treatment for cleft maxillary deformity.

  • A 8 kg, 3-year-old male West Highland white terrier dog with a 1.5-year history of chronic, severely pruritic, seborrheic skin disorder was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. On physical examination, lesions were observed on entire cutaneous surface, except for face, dorsum of body, and footpads. Skin lesions were characterized by diffuse erythema, erythematous papules, severe alopecia, hyperpigmentation, and lichenification. Tape strip tests of skin lesions revealed cocci and Malassezia infections. The intradermal allergy tests revealed positive reactions to Japanese cedar pollen, but the non-seasonal clinical signs were not compatible with atopic dermatitis caused by this pollen. Results of hematological examination, serum chemistry and thyroid gland profile were normal. Examination of skin biopsy exhibited hyperplastic superficial perivascular dermatosis with severe acanthosis, excessive keratinocyte mitoses, patchy or diffuse mild spongiosis, and lymphocytic exocytosis in epidermis. Perivascular to interstitial mononuclear cells infiltration was seen in the superficial dermis. Based on the results of examination described above, epidermal dysplasia was diagnosed. Treatments with administration of antibiotics, etretinate, and prednisolone orally combined with topical ketoconazole cream and antiseborreic shampoos had no good results. Following treatment with long-term oral itraconazole at 10 mg/kg daily and chlorhexidine shampoos was successful. However, when itraconazole therapy was stopped, the condition worsened twice within 2 or 3 months. Readministration of itraconazole produced improvement within 4 weeks. This dog has now been controlled periodical itraconazole therapy.

  • Design of web site must include community considerations alongside technical design aspects. The main purposes of this study are to identify the community criteria for evaluating web site and to examine how business web sites include the community factors. To identify the evaluation criteria, the author reviewed recent literatures and made a table showing a summary result(see Table 1). appendix shows a sample form NASDAQ(n=82) and KOSDAQ(n=59) which were evaluated. Using the evaluation from with 189 items(Table 3), all sites were visited and review between August 28, 2000 and September 6, 2000. The auther’s evaluations were done from the perspective of community building in business sector. Table 4, summary data on the results of the study, shows that the level of application of the community concept is very low. Among the listed 18 items, only a few items are utilized at more than 50% level. Less than 10% items are Member Profile, Group Segmentation, Backstory, Forum, Chat, Fact-to-face Meeting, and Collaborative Design. the unbalanced utilization due to the lack of community concept in businesses are found. Korea firms are superior to NASDAQ firms in terms of Bulletin Board and FAQ; But Korean firms are inferior and remain at very low level in terms of Member Login, Education Materials, Backstory, Forum, and Integrating Off-line Activities which are core factors of community building.

  • We present the radial variations of the scale heights and the vertical velocity dispersions in a sample of nearby edge-on galaxies using BIMA/CARMA $^{12}CO$ ($J=1{\rightarrow}0$), VLA/EVLA HI, and Spitzer $3.6{\mu}m$ data. Both the disk thicknesses and the velocity dispersions of gas and stars vary with radius, contrary to assumptions of previous studies. We investigate how the interstellar gas pressure and the gravitational instability parameter differ from values derived assuming constant velocity dispersions and scale heights. Using the measurement of the disk thicknesses and the derived radial profiles of gas and stars, we estimate the corresponding volume densities. The gravitational instability parameter Q follows a fairly uniform profile with radius and is ${\geq}1$ across the star-forming disk. The star formation law has a slope that is significantly different from those found in more face-on galaxy studies. The midplane gas pressure appears to roughly hold a power-law correlation with the midplane volume density ratio (${\rho}_{H2}/{\rho}_{HI}$).
