  • This study was conducted to investigate growth performance, photosynthesis, water use efficiency (WUE), and stomatal conductance ($g_s$) of container seedlings of Liriodendron tulipifera and Zelkova serrata growing under three different irrigation periods (1 time/1 day, 1 time/2 days and 1 time/3 days) for high seedling quality. The root collar diameter and height of L. tulipifera and Z. serrata seedlings were highest with 1 time/1 day irrigation, whereas they were lowest with 1 time/3 days irrigation. The two species showed low drought tolerance. As irrigation period was shortened, biomass and seedling quality index (SQI) of the two species increased. The ratio of height to root collar diameter (H/D) and the ratio of below to aboveground biomass (T/R) of the two species were lower with 1 time/3 days than at other irrigation periods. L. tulipifera and Z. serrata seedlings showed significantly higher photosynthetic capacity with 1 time/1 day irrigation. As irrigation period was shortened, $g_s$ of two species increased, while their WUE decreased significantly (P<0.05) These results show that 1 time/1 day irrigation provides the most optimal water condition for container seedling production of two species and irrigation controlling is very important for growth and quality of container seedlings.

  • Many poultry eggs are discarded worldwide because of infection (i.e., avian flu) or presence of high levels of pesticides. The possibility of adopting egg yolk as a source material to produce polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymer was examined in this study. Cupriavidus necator Re2133/pCB81 was used for the production of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) or poly(3HHx), a polymer that would normally require long-chain fatty acids as carbon feedstocks for the incorporation of 3HHx monomers. The optimal medium contained 5% egg yolk oil and ammonium nitrate as a nitrogen source, with a carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio of 20. Time course monitoring using the optimized medium was conducted for 5 days. Biomass production was 13.1 g/l, with 43.7% co-polymer content. Comparison with other studies using plant oils and the current study using egg yolk oil revealed similar polymer yields. Thus, discarded egg yolks could be a potential source of PHA.

  • To produce ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid by a mold, cultural conditions of Mortierella isabellina IFO 8183 were investigated. It was found that the increase of initial pH resulted in the decrease of the ${\gamma}-Linolenic$ acid content and the increase of the C/N ratio of medium resulted in the increase of the lipid content. Addition of sodium acetate into the medium resulted in the increased of cell yield, lipid yield, ${\gamma}-Linolenic$ acid content and ${\gamma}-Linolenic$ acid productivity. Under the optimum coditions(glucose, $NH_4NO_3$, C/N ratio of 40, pH 6.0, $30^{\circ}C$ and 0.5% of sodium acetate), the following results were obtained: cell yield, 0.347(g dry biomass/g glucose; lipid yield, 0.18(g lipid/g glucose); lipid content, 0.52(g lipid/g dry biomass); ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid content, 60(mg ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid/g lipid); maximum ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid concentration, 347mg/l after incubation of 8 days.

  • A single station representative of the razor clam, Solen (Solen) strictus, on a macrotidal flat, Inchon, Korea was sampled at bimonthly intervals between May 1989 and July 1990 by using a can corer. Estimates of growth rate and annual production of this razor clam have been made using the techniques of cohort growth analysis. Growth rate and production were highest during the first year after spawning and recruitment. The annual production was $2.83g\;DWt/m^2/yr$, mean annual biomass $256.3\;g/w^20$, and a turnover time of 5.00 yea, giving an annual turnover rate (P/B) of $0.20\;yr^{-1}$. The total annual production in wet weight ($33.22g\;WWt/m^2/yr$) appeared to consist of water in live flesh($72.6\%$) and shell($18.9\%$), whereas the dry weight of the soft parts was $8.52\%$, the ash-free dry weight $5.4\%$, and the ash content $3.1\%$ of the total wet weight.

  • In this study we evaluated the availability of hairy vetch in citrus (Citrus unshiu Marc.) orchards of volcanic ash soils. The responses to increasing seeding rates and various growing conditions such as altitude, accumulated temperature, and soil chemical properties etc, were analyzed by means of the seedling establishment rate, weed occurrence ratio, and shoot biomass yield of hairy vetch. Field experiments were conducted at five citrus orchards by altitude from Sep. 2015 to Apr. 2016 in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. Hairy vetch used in the study was 'Cheongpyungbora', developed by National Institute of Crop Science. Seeding rates of hairy vetch consisted of 30, 60 and $90kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$. Results showed that the seedling establishment rates of hairy vetch were quite similar regardless of seeding rates in all fields and weed occurrence ratio at 30, 60 and $90kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ of seeding rates were 11.8, 3.8, and 5.1% (dry wt.), respectively. Both 60 and $90kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ of seeding rates, the weed occurrences were decreased by 96.2% and 94.9%. The nitrogen production of hairy vetch at 30, 60 and $90kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ of seeding rates were 254, 316, and $315kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$, respectively. Both 60 and $90kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ of seeding rates, The nitrogen production were increased by 24%, compared to $30kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ of seeding rate. In these results we were considered that the cost-efficient seeding rate of vetch was $60kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ in citrus orchards. Also, this study showed that the shoot biomass of hairy vetch and various cultivative factors were related and The nitrogen production of hairy vetch had a little bit of positive correlation (R=0.2714) with accumulated temperature and considerable correlations with some items (EC ($R=0.4520^{**}$) and exchangeable K ($R=0.4078^{**}$)) of soil chemical properties. Therefore, we were considered that hairy vetch can be used as a leguminous cover crop in citrus orchards, the calculation formula (Y=4.4097X + 33.594 (R=0.9547)) can be suggested for nitrogen yield of hairy vetch by using the shoot fresh weight (X).

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) on in vitro rumen fermentation at various dose levels of 0 (T1), 100 (T2), 200 (T3), and 300 (T4) ppb in a wheat straw-based buffalo diet. The results show that the truly degradable dry matter, truly degradable organic matter, gas production, microbial biomass production and partitioning factor values in the control group (T1) were higher (p < 0.05) than those of the T2, T3, and T4 groups. The total volatile fatty acids, acetate, propionate, and butyrate values in the control group (T1) were higher (p < 0.05) than those of the T2, T3, and T4 groups. The partitioning factor value in the control group (T1) was higher (p < 0.05) than those of the T2, T3, and T4 groups. The partitioning factor values of the T2 and T3 groups were higher (p < 0.05) than that of the T4 group. There was no significant variation in the partitioning factor value between the T2 and T3 group. The acetate : propionate (A : P) ratio in the control group (T1) was lower (p < 0.05) than those of the T2, T3, and T4 groups. The A : P ratio in the T2 group was lower (p < 0.05) than those of the T3 and T4 groups. It was concluded that different levels of AFB1 contamination in feed significantly affect the in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics. Thus, these findings could help to determine the influences of AFB1 in a wheat straw-based buffalo diet. Additionally, it is necessary to manage AFB1 contamination in ruminants.

  • This study aimed to examine foundational data for container seedling production with the subject of Daphniphyllum macropodum community in Mt. Naejang National Park. To achieve the goal, it investigated the growth characteristics of young tree seedlings growing in places with different light intensity environment. Regarding the growth environment of Daphniphyllum macropodum community, it was typical heavy rain summer climate, and the soil was silt loam with the organic content as 11.42~15.61%, total nitrogen as 0.50~0.76%, cation exchangeable capacity (C.E.C) as 18.92~23.32 cmol/kg, and pH as 4.85~5.58. About light intensity environment changed by research plots, relative transmittance of solar radiation was 71~76% in plot A, 37~42% in plot B, 65~70% in plot C, and 28~33% in plot D. The seedlings tended to be intensively distributed either under the crown of their mother tree or in the slope site, and plot A and C where light intensity environment is relatively more favorable showed 1,550 tree/ha and 1,250 tree/ha. Total biomass production of Daphniphyllum macropodum seedlings was 5.37 g in plot A and 5.29 g in plot C, so they were higher than 4.42~4.51 g in plot B and D with relatively less favorable light intensity environment. The T/R ratio was 1~2, leaf area rate was $139.71{\sim}183.50cm^2{\cdot}g^{-1}$, leaf area ratio was $39.68{\sim}60.66cm^2{\cdot}g^{-1}$, and leaf dry weight ratio grew higher in the range of $0.28{\sim}0.33cm^2{\cdot}g^{-1}$ as the intensity of radiation became less. It is thought that in the generation and growth of Daphniphyllum macropodum seedlings, the intensity of light has more effects than the organic content in soil. And it is also thought that in the application of container seedlings production, light environment management over 65~70% to full sun light intensity will affect significantly the initial growth of Daphniphyllum macropodum.

  • Seedling establishment of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is a critical factor in production system and cultural practices. The objective of this study was to identify the components of soybean seedling developments encompassing planting dates and cultivars that respond to emergence, early growth stage and dry matter accumulation. Three soybean cultivars, Hwangkeumkong, Shinpaldalkong 2, and Pungsannamulkong, were planted at Baegsan silty loam soil. Planting date was May 13, June 3, and June 24 in 2001. Sprinkler irrigation was accompanied with 30mm after seeding for three planting dates. Soybean seedlings were sampled at the growth stages from VE to V5. Days to emergence of soybean seedlings were taken 8 at May 13 and 5 at June 24 plantings. Emergence percentage was over 90 at three planting dates. May 13 planting took 33 days and June 24 planting was 25 days for reaching V5 growth stage. Cotyledon number was decreased after V2. Significant cultivar difference was found in cotyledon dry weight until V2 which differed in seed dry weights at the planting times. Leaf and total dry weights of soybean seedlings were not differed from V1 to V3 among planting dates and cultivars. Leaf water contents were generally ranged 78 to 85%. Branch was appeared from V4. Leaf/stem ratio among cultivars was similar at five growth stages and gradually increased from 2.1 at V1 to 2.8 at V5. The results based on this experiment indicated that seedling establishment of soybean was continued from VE to V3 growth stages affecting mainly by planting date and soil moisture.

  • The objective of this study was to find optimal water condition of containerized seedling production of two tropical species for high seedling quality. This study was conducted to investigate photosynthesis, water use efficiency(WUE), Stomatal conductance(gs) and growth performances of containerized seedlings of Eucalyptus pellita and Acacia mangium growing under three different irrigation periods (1 time/1 day, 1 time/2 days and 1 time/3 days). E. pellita showed outstanding photosynthetic capacities at 1time/1day irrigation and A. mangium showed good photosynthetic capacity at all treatments. As irrigation period were shortened, gs of two species increased, while WUE of two species decreased. Root collar diameter and height of two species were the highest at 1 time/1 day irrigation, while the lowest at 1 time/3 days irrigation. As irrigation period were shortened, H/D ratio, biomass and seedling quality index (DQI) of two species increased but T/R ratio of two species showed the opposite tendency. These results showed that 1 time/1 day irrigation is optimal water condition of containerized seedling production of two tropical species and irrigation controlling is very important for growth and seedling quality of containerized seedling.

  • This study was conducted to investigate changes of vegetation and soil characteristics to tidal land of Saemangeum reclaimed land from 2010 to 2012. Soil salinity was 0.16-22.3 dS $m^{-1}$ in the first survey, while the three years later, it was decreased to 0.12-4.22 dS $m^{-1}$. Vegetations were classified as 6 families and 26 species but it was increased to 8 families and 31 species after three years. Numbers of average species in survey site were increased from 7.1 species to 10.6 species. Numbers of vegetation were increased at each survey sites except for survey site 7 : there was decreased halophyte according to decrease in the soil salinity. Biomass production was increased at low production site, and showed highest production in area of dominant vegetation as Phragmites communis. Simpson's dominance ratio(SDR) of main vegetation as Phragmites communis, Calamagrostis epigeios were increased but Suaeda maritima, Salicornia europaea, Puccinellia nipponica and Zoysia sinica were decreased.
