The location of inspection stations is a significant component of production systems. In this paper, a prototype expert system is designed for deciding the optimal location of inspection stations. The production system is defined as a single channel of n serial operation stations. The potential inspection station can be located after any of the operation stations. Nonconforming units are generated from a compound binomial distribution with known parameters at any given operation station. Traditionally Dynamic programming, Zero-one integer programming, or Non-linear programming techniques are used to solve this problem. However a problem with these techniques is that the computation time becomes prohibitively large when t be number of potential inspection stations are fifteen or more. An expert system has the potential to solve this problem using a rule-based system to determine the near optimal location of inspection stations. This prototype expert system is divided into a static database, a dynamic database and a knowledge base. Based on defined production systems, the sophisticated rules are generated by the simulator as a part of the knowledge base. A generate-and-test inference mechanism is utilized to search the solution space by applying appropriate symbolic and quantitative rules based on input data. The goal of the system is to determine the location of inspection stations while minimizing total cost.
This paper aims at developing an integrated fleet management support system for industrial carriers who usually control the vessels of their own or on a time charter to minimize the cost of shipping their cargoes. The work is mainly concerned with the operational management problem of the fleet owned by a major oil company, a typical industrial carrier. The optimal fleet management problem for the major oil company can be divided into two phase problem. The front end corresponds to the production operation problem of the transportation of crude oil, the refinery operation, and the distribution of product oil to comply with the demand of the market. The back end is to tackle the fleet scheduling problem to meet the seaborne transportation demand derived from the front end. Relevant optimization models for each phase are proposed and described briefly. Then a user-friendly integrated fleet management support system is built based on the proposed optimization models for both ends under Windows environment. A case study reflecting the practices of fleet management problem for the major oil company is carried out by using the system.

Up to the present, the evaluation measures in the production and inventory management have been studied under the pre-condition that the costs for major factors(e.g,. cost of carrying inventory, cost of demand shortage) are given easily, although in practice, it is difficult. The case in which multiple participants have a different viewpoints in production and inventory management has not been studied, in spite of its frequent occurrence. This study suggests a production and inventory model with multiple objectives corresponding to major factors and the related interactive algorithm based on the preference structures of participants. The problem can be solved through a weighting vector generated by an interaction with participants. The concept of equity is also used in order to guarantee the reasonable distribution of group utility in determining the individual relative weights of participants. This study includes the reality of the model and the decision process in the production and inventory management.

Many mid-sized companies in Korean automotive industry have attempted to solve the lack of human power, to control the quality of components, to improve the production rate, and to innovate the manufacturing line. The goals of this study are to analyze the production rate of an automotive component manufacturing line using simulation software, to construct a Flexible Automation Subassembly (FAS) system and to suggest an optimized layout design using FAS line. In this research, the simulation model for manufacturing line was developed and used the realistic data of a medium sized company in Korean automotive industry. To complete this research, a simulation software 'ARENA' was used. This research analyzed the work distribution strategy and cycle time element for production flow and proposed an optimized layout to resolve line balancing problem which would bring the improved production rate.

Fabrication of the hull plate demands a lot of man-hour and a high degree of technology. In recent years, commercial shipping orders have been fallen because of intensifying competition with low price of order and labor cost. In order to solve this problem, a countermeasure such as a cost reduction is required. In this study, we are dealing with the method of supplying the forming information of the hull to the production site. We reviewed studies of hull forming that have been proposed so far to develop a method for providing hull forming information. On the basis of given production plans from the production site of shipyard, we discuss how to convert shell plate to production plan. Then, we will discuss the efficiency of the distribution method through the network about the method of hull forming. Thus, we have modified the distribution method which was proposed before. Finally, we will introduce the enhanced method for providing fabrication information of the hull plate to the small and medium-sized shipyards.

Statistical process control techniques have been greatly implemented in industries for improving product quality and saving production costs. As a primary tool among these techniques, control charts are widely used to detect the occurrence of assignable causes. In most works on the control charts it considered the problem of monitoring the mean and variance, and the quality characteristic of interest is normally distributed. In some situations monitoring of the minimum and maximum values is more important and the quality characteristic of interest is the Weibull distribution rather than a normal distribution. In this paper, we consider the statistical design of minimum and maximum control charts when the distribution of the quality characteristic of interest is Weibull. The proposed minimum and maximum control charts are applied to the wind data. The results of the application show that the proposed method is more effective than traditional methods.
The system under study is a single item, multi-echelon distribution system with a capacitated production facility. All the nodes at the downstream ends are demand-sites, i.e., ordered items are delivered to the customers from the node. Also any transshipment depots in the midstream can be demand-sites as well. For a given planning period, at each of demand-site, demand is forecasted and known. Our objective is to minimize the average system cost per period which is the sum of holding and backorder costs in the entire network. Due to the capacity restrictions, it is difficult to establish efficient distribution planning. To overcome such a difficulty and obtain a reasonable and better solution, we convert this problem into a single machine earliness and weighted tardiness scheduling. We propose a simple but cost-effective heuristic for this problem. The experimental results showed that the proposed heuristic obtained much better solutions compared with another approach.

This paper addresses a mathematical approach to decision making in a real-world material distribution situation. The problem is characterized by a low-volume and highly-varied mix of products, therefore there is a lot of material movement between the facilities. This study focuses especially on the transportation scheduler with a tool that can be used to quantitatively analyze the volume of material moved, the type of truck to be used, production schedules, and due dates. In this research, we have developed a mixed integer programming problem using the minimum cost, multiperiod, multi-commodity network flow approach that minimizes the overall material movement costs. The results suggest that the optimization approach provides a set of feasible solution routes with the objective of reducing the overall fleet cost.
Using GIS and socio-economical data the relationship between human activities and global environmental change Is Analysed from the view point of food productivity and CO2 emission. Under the assumption that the population problem, the food problem and global warming due to energy consumption can be stabilized through managing land use, impacts of human activities such as consumption of food, energy and timber on global environment changes, and global population capacity are Analysed using developed system dynamics model in the research. In the model the world is divided into two groups: OECD countries and the others. Used global land use data set Is land cover map derived from satellite data, and potential distribution of arable land is estimated by the method of Clamor and Solomon which takes into consideration spatial distribution of climate data such as precipitation and evapotranspiration. In addition, impacts of CO2 emission from human activities on food production through global warming are included in the model as a feedback. The results of the analysis for BaU scenario and Toronto Conference scenario are similar to the results of existing models. From the result of this study, the human habitability in 2020 is 8 billion people, and CO2 emission in 2020 based on BaU Scenario and on Toronto Scenario is 1.7 and 1.2 times more than the 1986's respectively. Improving spatial resolution of the model by using global data to distribute the environmental variables and sauce-economical indices is left for further studies.

This study investigates the response of functionally graded (FG) gas pipe under unsteady internal pressure and temperature. The pipe is proposed to be manufactured from FGMs rather than custom carbon steel, to reduce the erosion, corrosion, pressure surge and temperature variation effects caused by conveying of gases. The distribution of material graduations are obeying power and sigmoidal functions varying with the pipe thickness. The sigmoidal distribution is proposed for the 1st time in analysis of FG pipe structure. A Two-dimensional (2D) plane strain problem is proposed to model the pipe cross-section. The Fourier law is applied to describe the heat flux and temperature variation through the pipe thickness. The time variation of internal pressure is described by using exponential-harmonic function. The proposed problem is solved numerically by a two-dimensional (2D) plane strain finite element ABAQUS software. Nine-node isoparametric element is selected. The proposed model is verified with published results. The effects of material graduation, material function, temperature and internal pressures on the response of FG gas pipe are investigated. The coupled temperature and displacement FEM solution is used to find a solution for the stress displacement and temperature fields simultaneously because the thermal and mechanical solutions affected greatly by each other. The obtained results present the applicability of alternative FGM materials rather than classical A106Gr.B steel. According to proposed model and numerical results, the FGM pipe is more effective in natural gas application, especially in eliminating the corrosion, erosion and reduction of stresses.
