  • Since railway bridge frequently have a chance of passing train load close to design load, it is necessary to reflect sufficiently fatigue property in early design phase for many structural details. Nevertheless fatigue cracks are reported partly in deck plate girder of railway steel bridge because of the weight and arrangement of axial load acting on railway bridge, the application of improper structural details for fatigue problem etc.. One of main cause for fatigue crack at the welded part of upper flange and web is caused by the eccentricity action of train load due to the difference of center to center spacing between the main girder supporting sleeper and the rail acting train load. For the existing deck plate girder of railway steel bridge, in this study, field survey, field measurement and a series of structural analysis were performed. In addition, the characteristics of structural behavior, the causes and repair/ retrofit of fatigue crack were examined in the target bridge.

  • Slim floor system using deep decks has been developed and employed in Europe to reduce the floor height of steel structures. Although long span buildings involving the issue of reducing floor height are being increasingly built in Korea, employing deep decks in more than 7m long span structures is likely to cause problems associated with excessive deflection. This study is applied to the long-span concrete casting of the deep deck plate usability of deflection due to bending and torsional instability of open cross-section, as a way to improve the problem of cap plates are suggested, and the optimum length of reinforcement and location are derived from theoretic estimation. The cap plates are placed on the deep decks with regular intervals to overcome the instability of open sections, improve the stiffness of the sections and control the deflection at the centers. The improvement in flexural capacity associated with the location of the cap plates and the length of reinforcement are verified through analysis and test.

  • In Korea, older pedestrian accounted for 57% of all pedestrian deaths although a ratio of older pedestrian accidents to total pedestrian accidents was only 25.9%. Though ageing population problem becomes more challenging for road safety, little is know about the behaviour of older pedestrian's behaviour. This study aimed to identify road crossing behaviour of older pedestrian at three-lane unsignalized crosswalks using video image analysis and to compare the behaviour of older pedestrian to younger one by indicators including approaching speed, the number of walking steps and other factors. The results showed that there was a difference of approaching time at kerb, waiting time at kerb, the number of glances at kerb, and the number of glances at crossing between two groups under the situation of car approaching to crosswalks. It also showed that older pedestrian usually spent 1.16 times more than younger pedestrian to walk across the crosswalk with only 84.4% of walking speed of younger pedestrian. The number of steps of older pedestrian for road crossing was 1.12 times higher with 90% shorter steps than younger pedestrian. It was concluded that older pedestrian usually decided to walk across in case of 1.67 times longer headway than younger pedestrian's decision. These results could be applied in road and facility design for better safety of older pedestrians.

  • Purpose: Pediatric burn still generates social problem leading to physical and mental sequelae for ages. We studied to help make a program for the prevention of pediatric burn. Methods: We analyzed retrospectically 2759 acute burn patients under the age of 15 years in recent 5years (January 2000 - December 2004). Results: 1553 males and 1226 females were investigated, with a male to female ratio of 1.25 : 1. The greatest number of burn patients were those with an age of 1 - 2 years(1435, 52%). Scalding burn was the most common cause of injury, which accounted for 1980 (71.8%) patients, followed by contact burns(286, 10.4%), flame burn(229, 8.3%), steam burn(141, 5.1%). Especially steam burn was the second cause of injury in the age under 1 year, while flame burn was the same in the age over 3 years. During recent 5 years, incidence of contact burn increased over twofold despite the others did not changed substantially. Variation of seasonal incidence is minimal and most of the patients(2545 cases, 92.2%) had burns of ${\leq}20%$ TBSA. The median hospital stay was 18.3 days, and the rate of operation was 35.4% with an high rate in electrical burn(70.6%), steam burn(68.8%), contact burn(65%). 27 patients died in this series, which yielded a mortality rate of 1%. Conclusion: We expect that these data will be used as a basis for prevention of pediatric burn.

  • It is very difficult problem to estimate and evaluate the performance of e-government system which scope and size are large and its effectiveness can not be seen shortly but reveals after several years. It is because the previous offline processes can not be transformed to online ones fully and shortly. For such e-transformation cases, the performance evaluation model should be adjusted and modified gradually as time passes. This paper propose new EEM(E-transformation Evaluation Model) model and methodology to evaluate G2B system that is one of large e-government project. EEM model can derive monetary value of e-transformatized business process areas(online areas). It also estimate the expected effect of offline area that is not yet transformed to online. EEM model consists of standard model, verification model and estimation model with some variables such as evaluation year, evaluation area and data type. By using survey data and database data together it can validate the correctness of the model and derive the effect of the system introduction. This paper also propose EEM evaluation methodology consisting of 5 stages and 10 sub processes to evaluate online and offline effect efficiently. To show the usefulness of this study, we evaluate the performance of Korea G2B system named KONEPS which is famous as a successful e-government case in the world by using the proposed model and methodology. The proposed model and methodology can be applied to different similar areas including e-government projects and large scale information system introduction in private sectors. This study can be also used for establishing appropriate policies about e-government project and informatization issues.

  • It is true that there is a possibility of distortion in the statistical surveys or actual surveys depending on which investigator, what purpose, and how research method. Even statistical results are more likely to be 'lying', and statistics on crime or delinquent are sometimes referred to as 'whopper'. There are many reasons for not trusting statistics on crime or delinquent, but one of the main causes is the existence of a hidden crime or an unreported crime. In order to overcome these hidden crime problems, victim surveys or self-report surveys are being used. However, this method also has the problem of underreporting or overreporting depending on the type of crime. Because investigations into crime, delinquency, and deviant behavior are very sensitive, the subjects have a psychological burden. A randomized response model has been developed and used in the field of statistics as a way to induce a true answer to the sensitive content which is burdensome to reveal the experiences of the survey subjects. This technique is a very useful way to solve the problems of victim surveys or self-report surveys. Nevertheless, there are very few cases in the field of criminology in Korea. Therefore, in order to examine the applicability of the randomized response model in the field of criminology, this study used the randomized response model to actually measure the content of prostitution for college students and the effectiveness of the randomized response model was confirmed.

  • The Bunhwangsaseoktop is the oldest stone brick pagoda in Silla Period. The pagoda body is made by piling small brick-shaped stones trimmed from black andesite and the first-story core has a shrine, which is made by granite. In 1915 it was repaired on a large scale, but now is severely damaged. Many kind of the stone decay like flaking, granular disintegration have occurred especially on the granite surface of the pagoda. In this study have been investigated the stone decay type and its cause in relation to efflorescence on the body part. Various analysis show that the deterioration on the granite is due to the same materials that lead to efflorescence on the body stone surface. The soluble salt like sodium nitrate, calcium sulfate and sodium sulfate come from white joint mortar. This salt solution is recrystallized in the outside of the pagoda, but most of them flow down with rain. In This process the porous granite absorbes the dissolved salts with moisture into the inside by capillary action. In order to reduce this problem, therefore, white joint moral is changed with other less soluble materials. And it is necessary to take steps to prevent water from seep into the inside of the stone, because this water dissolves the white joint mortar.

  • The decreased fertility is frequently thought to be problem of cattle production. However, studies figure out that number of these problems is related to bull factors especially in artificial insemination setting. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the fertility status of bull by their estimated relative conception rate of cows that were inseminated by frozen semen from Korean proven bulls. Here we use the non-return rate (NRR) to access the bull fertility whereas, the NRR was define as the proportion of bulls that semen were used to inseminate cows and the number of cows that did not return for another service within 60 days. The data from 54,388 artificial inseminations (AI) were analyzed from 88 KPN semen. The NRRs of highest and lowest fertile bull were 83.81 and 51.33%, respectively. And mean NRR was 68.27%. In comparison to previously reported study, our data shows 17.38% higher NRR and the absolute value of difference in 50%>NRR and 50%
