Sensitivity-based reliability analysis of earth slopes using finite element method

  • For slope stability analysis, an alternative to the classical limit equilibrium method (LEM) of slices is the shear strength reduction method (SRM), which can be integrated into finite element analysis or finite difference analysis. Recently, probabilistic analysis of earth slopes has been very attractive because it is capable to take the soil uncertainty into account. However, the SRM is less commonly extended to probabilistic framework compared to a variety of probabilistic LEM analysis of earth slopes. To overcome some limitations that hinder the development of probabilistic SRM stability analysis, a new procedure based on recursive algorithm FORM with sensitivity analysis in the space of original variables is proposed. It can be used to deal with correlated non-normal variables subjected to implicit limit state surface. Using the proposed approach, a probabilistic finite element analysis of the stability of an existing earth dam is carried out in this paper.

  • A vehicle cruise control algorithm using an Interacting Multiple Model (IMM)-based Multi-Target Tracking (MTT) method has been presented in this paper. The vehicle cruise control algorithm consists of three parts; track estimator using IMM-Probabilistic Data Association Filter (PDAF), a primary target vehicle determination algorithm and a single-target adaptive cruise control algorithm. Three motion models; uniform motion, lane-change motion and acceleration motion, have been adopted to distinguish large lateral motions from longitudinal motions. The models have been validated using simulated and experimental data. The improvement in the state estimation performance when using three models is verified in target tracking simulations. The performance and safety benefits of a multi-model-based MTT-ACC system is investigated via simulations using real driving radar sensor data. These simulations show system response that is more realistic and reflective of actual human driving behavior.

An Indoor Localization Algorithm based on Improved Particle Filter and Directional Probabilistic Data Association for Wireless Sensor Network

  • As an important technology of the internetwork, wireless sensor network technique plays an important role in indoor localization. Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) problem has a large effect on indoor location accuracy. A location algorithm based on improved particle filter and directional probabilistic data association (IPF-DPDA) for WSN is proposed to solve NLOS issue in this paper. Firstly, the improved particle filter is proposed to reduce error of measuring distance. Then the hypothesis test is used to detect whether measurements are in LOS situations or NLOS situations for N different groups. When there are measurements in the validation gate, the corresponding association probabilities are applied to weight retained position estimate to gain final location estimation. We have improved the traditional data association and added directional information on the original basis. If the validation gate has no measured value, we make use of the Kalman prediction value to renew. Finally, simulation and experimental results show that compared with existing methods, the IPF-DPDA performance better.

  • 입력 단 저장방식의 스위치는 최대 수율을 제한하는 HOL(Head-of-line) 블록킹이라는 단점을 지니고 있지만 구현의 간단함을 지닌다는 장점이 있다. 그러나 현재 VOQ(Virtual Output Queueing) 기술을 이용하면 입력 단 저장방식의 스위치에서 보이는 HOL 블록킹에서 완전히 벗어날 수 있어 간단한 구조로 높은 수율을 얻을 수 있게 된다. 본 논문에서 입력 단 저장방식의 ATM 스위치를 위한 새로운 셀 스케쥴링 알고리듬 PPIM(Probabilistic Parallel Iterative Matching)을 제안 한다. 제안된 새로운 알고리듬은 예약 대역폭에 비례하는 가중치를 각각의 입력-출력 링크에 부여함으로써, 기존의 PIM(Parallel Iterative Matching)이 제공하지 못하는 예약된 전송률 보장이 가능하게 한다. 이 알고리듬을 이용한 ATM 스위치는 높은 수율과 낮은 지연 값뿐만 아니라 지터 성능에 있어 기존의 WPIM(Weighted PIM)에 비해 더욱 향상된 성능을 보여준다.

Cross-Validation Probabilistic Neural Network Based Face Identification

  • In this paper a cross-validation algorithm for training probabilistic neural networks (PNNs) is presented in order to be applied to automatic face identification. Actually, standard PNNs perform pretty well for small and medium sized databases but they suffer from serious problems when it comes to using them with large databases like those encountered in biometrics applications. To address this issue, we proposed in this work a new training algorithm for PNNs to reduce the hidden layer's size and avoid over-fitting at the same time. The proposed training algorithm generates networks with a smaller hidden layer which contains only representative examples in the training data set. Moreover, adding new classes or samples after training does not require retraining, which is one of the main characteristics of this solution. Results presented in this work show a great improvement both in the processing speed and generalization of the proposed classifier. This improvement is mainly caused by reducing significantly the size of the hidden layer.

희소 신호의 복원을 위한 확률적 배제 기반의 직교 정합 추구 알고리듬 (Probabilistic Exclusion Based Orthogonal Matching Pursuit Algorithm for Sparse Signal Reconstruction)

  • 본 논문에서는 희소한 신호의 압축센싱를 위해 확률적 배제에 기반한 직교정합추구 (PEOMP) 신호 복원 알고리듬을 제안하였다. CoSaMP, gOMP, BAOMP 등의 알고리듬들은 매 반복 단계에서 새로운 atom들을 support set에 추가할 뿐만 아니라 부적절하다고 판단되어지는 atom들은 삭제하기 때문에 우수한 신호 복원 성능을 보인다. 그러나 반복 과정 중에 support set의 구성이 국소 최저점에서 벗어나지 못하여 신호 복원에 실패하는 경우가 발생하는 단점을 가지고 있다. 제안된 알고리듬은 매 반복 단계에서 확률적으로 임의의 atom을 배제하여 support set이 국소 최저점에 빠져 있는 경우 그곳에서 탈출하는데 도움을 준다. 모의실험을 통해 PEOMP가 기존의 OMP 기반의 알고리듬들과 $l_1$ 최적화 방법보다 신호 복원 능력 관점에서 우수한 성능을 보임을 확인하였다.

SHM-based probabilistic representation of wind properties: Bayesian inference and model optimization

  • The estimated probabilistic model of wind data based on the conventional approach may have high discrepancy compared with the true distribution because of the uncertainty caused by the instrument error and limited monitoring data. A sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm-based finite mixture modeling method has been developed in the companion paper and is conducted to formulate the joint probability density function (PDF) of wind speed and direction using the wind monitoring data of the investigated bridge. The established bivariate model of wind speed and direction only represents the features of available wind monitoring data. To characterize the stochastic properties of the wind parameters with the subsequent wind monitoring data, in this study, Bayesian inference approach considering the uncertainty is proposed to update the wind parameters in the bivariate probabilistic model. The slice sampling algorithm of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is applied to establish the multi-dimensional and complex posterior distribution which is analytically intractable. The numerical simulation examples for univariate and bivariate models are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. In addition, the proposed Bayesian inference approach is used to update and optimize the parameters in the bivariate model using the wind monitoring data from the investigated bridge. The results indicate that the proposed Bayesian inference approach is feasible and can be employed to predict the bivariate distribution of wind speed and direction with limited monitoring data.

Probabilistic Model for Performance Analysis of a Heuristic with Multi-byte Suffix Matching

  • A heuristic with multi-byte suffix matching plays an important role in real pattern matching algorithms. By skipping many characters at a time in the process of comparing a given pattern with the text, the pattern matching algorithm based on a heuristic with multi-byte suffix matching shows a faster average search time than algorithms based on deterministic finite automata. Based on various experimental results and simulations, the previous works show that the pattern matching algorithms with multi-byte suffix matching performs well. However, there have been limited studies on the mathematical model for analyzing the performance in a standard manner. In this paper, we propose a new probabilistic model, which evaluates the performance of a heuristic with multi-byte suffix matching in an average-case search. When the theoretical analysis results and experimental results were compared, the proposed probabilistic model was found to be sufficient for evaluating the performance of a heuristic with suffix matching in the real pattern matching algorithms.

  • In this paper, an efficient target speech detection algorithm is proposed for the performance improvement of multi-input speech enhancement. Using the normalized cross correlation value between two selected channels, the proposed algorithm estimates the probabilistic distribution function of the value from the pure noise interval. Then, log-likelihoods are calculated with the function and the normalized cross correlation value to detect the target speech interval precisely. The detection results are applied to the generalized sidelobe canceller-based algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm significantly improves the speech recognition performance and the signal-to-noise ratios.
