The harmonic currents generated along with the operating speed of electrical railroad traction are very difficult to analyze because of its nonlinear characteristics. This paper therefore presents probabilistic approach for the evaluation of harmonic currents about the operating speed of the arbitrary single traction. To use probabilistic method for railroad system, PDF(Probability Density Function) using measuring data based on the realistic h 따 monic currents per operating speed is calculated. Measuring data of harmonic current per operating speed is obtained using the result data of PSCAD/EMTDC dynamic simulation based on an IAT(Intra Airport Transit) in Incheon International Airport. The means(expected values) and variances of harmonic currents of single traction also are obtained by the PDF of the operating traction speed and harmonic currents. The uncertainty of harmonic currents can be calculated through the mean and variance of PDF. The probability of harmonic currents generated with the operating of arbitrary many tractions is calculated by the convolution of functions. The harmonics of different number of tractions are systematically investigated to assess the TDD(Total Demand Distortion) for the railroad system. The calculation of TDD was carried out using Monte-Carlo Simulations(MSCs) and the results of TDD evaluation of the power quality in the IAT power feeding system.

As the corrosion of reinforcing bar in concrete structures exposed to chloride attack is one of main factors to determine the remaining service life, marine concrete structures have to be designed to protect the chloride penetration. Among the durability design methods such as deterministic method and probabilistic method, design method based on the probabilistic theory has been widely studied. However, the most essential material, data of the material properties related to chloride diffusion, are still insufficient. In this paper, the probabilistic distribution of chloride diffusion coefficients and aging coefficients are derived by the experiment and analysis for the chloride coefficients of concrete containing pozzolans, which are generally used in marine structures.
Live load data in domestic office buildings have been collected in a systematic manner. Based on surveyed data, equivalent uniformly distributed load intensities, which produce the same load effect as the actual spatially varying, live load, have been obtained for various structural members (such as slab, beam, column, etc. ). Influence surface method has been employed to compute load effects under real live load, including beam moment, slab moment as well as axial force in column. The results have been examined to find probabilistic characteristics and relationship between influence area and load intensity (or coefficient of variation). The results were also compared with other survey results and found to be reasonable. Based on the probabilistic load models obtained, the lifetime extreme values have been analyzed and compared with current design loads. Tentative equations applicable to decide more rational design loads are also suggested as functions of influence area.
This paper mainly discusses the influence of the aggregate properties including grading, shape, content and distribution on the chloride diffusion coefficient, as well as the initiation time of steel corrosion from a probabilistic point of view. Towards this goal, a simulation method of random aggregate structure (RAS) based on elliptical particles and a procedure of finite element analysis (FEA) at meso-scale are firstly developed to perform the analysis. Next, the chloride diffusion coefficient ratio between concrete and cement paste $D_{app}/D_{cp}$ is chosen as the index to represent the effect of aggregates on the chloride diffusion process. Identification of the random distribution of this index demonstrates that it can be viewed as actually having a normal distribution. After that, the effect of aggregates on $D_{app}/D_{cp}$ is comprehensively studied, showing that the appropriate properties of aggregates should be decided by both of the average and the deviation of $D_{app}/D_{cp}$. Finally, a case study is conducted to demonstrate the application of this mesoscopic method in predicting the initiation time of steel corrosion in reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The mesoscopic probabilistic method developed in this paper can not only provide more reliable evidences on the proper grading and shape of aggregates, but also play an important role in the probability-based design method.
The barcode area extraction from images has been extensively studied, and existing methods exploit frequency characteristics or depend on the Hough transform (HT). However, the slantedness of the images and noise affects the performance of these approaches. Moreover, it is difficult to deal with the case where an image contains multiple barcodes. We therefore propose a barcode detection algorithm that is robust under such unfavorable conditions. The pre-processing step implements a probabilistic Hough transform to determine the areas that contain barcodes with a high probability, regardless of the slantedness, noise, and the number of instances. Then, a frequency component analysis extracts the barcodes. We successfully implemented the proposed system and performed a series of barcode extraction tests.

This paper presents an efficient algorithm for the estimation of damage location and severity in structure using Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN). Artificial neural network has been being used for damage assessment by many researchers, but there are still some barriers that must be overcome to improve its accuracy and efficiency. The major problems with the conventional neural network are the necessity of many training data for neural network learning and ambiguity in the relation of neural network architecture with convergence of solution. In this paper, PNN is used as a pattern classifier to overcome those problems in the conventional neural network. The basic idea of damage assessment algorithm proposed in this paper is that modal characteristics from a damaged structure are compared with the training patterns which represent the damage in specific element to determine how close it is to training patterns in terms of the probability from PNN. The training pattern that gives a maximum probability implies that the element used in producing the training pattern is considered as a damaged one. The proposed damage assessment algorithm using PNN is applied to a 2-span continuous beam model structure to verify the algorithm.
In 2011, an earthquake and subsequent tsunami hit the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, causing simultaneous accidents in several reactors. This accident shows us that if there are several reactors on site, the seismic risk to multiple units is important to consider, in addition to that to single units in isolation. When a seismic event occurs, a seismic-failure correlation exists between the nuclear power plant's structures, systems, and components (SSCs) due to their seismic-response and seismic-capacity correlations. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the multi-unit seismic risk by considering the SSCs' seismic-failure-correlation effect. In this study, a methodology is proposed to obtain the seismic-response-correlation coefficient between SSCs to calculate the risk to multi-unit facilities. This coefficient is calculated from a probabilistic multi-unit seismic-response analysis. The seismic-response and seismic-failure-correlation coefficients of the emergency diesel generators installed within the units are successfully derived via the proposed method. In addition, the distribution of the seismic-response-correlation coefficient was observed as a function of the distance between SSCs of various dynamic characteristics. It is demonstrated that the proposed methodology can reasonably derive the seismic-response-correlation coefficient between SSCs, which is the input data for multi-unit seismic probabilistic safety assessment.
In this article, the role of spans number and length in fire-resistance ratings (FRRs) of fireproofed steel frames are investigated. First, over a span-lengthening scenario, two one- and three-bay frames under the ISO834 fire are examined. It is shown that the FRRs of the frames rely highly on the changes made on their span length. Second, a building designed for three spans number of three, four, and five under natural fire is investigated. The beams are designed for two load-capacity-ratios (LCRs) of optimum and ultimate. The fire curves are determined through a probabilistic-based approach. It is shown that the structural vulnerability vastly increases while the number of spans decreases. The results show that for an optimum LCR, while the five-span frame can meet the required FRR in 87% of the fire scenarios, the four- and three-span frames can meet the required FRR in only 56%, and 50% of the fire scenarios, respectively. For an ultimate LCR, the five-, four- and three-span frames can meet the required FRR in 81%, 50%, and 37.5% of the fire scenarios, respectively. Functional solutions are then proposed to resolve the insufficiencies in the results and to rectify the application of the standard-based FRRs in the cases studied. The study here highlights how employing current standard-based FRRs can endanger structural safety if they are not connected to structural characteristics; a crucial hint specifically for the structural engineering community who may be not well familiar with the fundamentals of performance-based approaches.
Approximations such as the delete-term approximation, rare event approximation, and minimal cutset upper bound (MCUB) need to be prudently applied for the quantification of a seismic probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) model. Important characteristics of seismic PSA models indicate that preserving the success branches in a primary seismic event tree is necessary. Based on the authors' experience in modeling and quantifying plant-level seismic PSA models, the effects of applying negate-down to the success branches in primary seismic event trees on the quantification results are summarized along with the following three insights gained: (1) there are two competing effects on the MCUB-based quantification results: one tending to increase and the other tending to decrease; (2) the binary decision diagram does not always provide exact quantification results; and (3) it is identified when the exact results will be obtained, and which combination provides more conservative results compared to the others. Complicated interactions occur in Boolean variable manipulation, approximation, and the quantification of a seismic PSA model. The insights presented herein can assist PSA analysts to better understand the important theoretical principles associated with the quantification of seismic PSA models.
In this study the infinite slope model, one of the physical landslide models has been suggested to evaluate the susceptibility of the landslide. However, applying the infinite slope model in regional study area can be difficult or impossible because of the difficulties in obtaining and processing of large spatial data sets. With limited site investigation data, uncertainties were inevitably involved with. Therefore, the probabilistic analysis method such as Monte Carlo simulation and the GIS based infinite slope stability model have been used to evaluate the probability of failure. The proposed approach has been applied to practical example. The study area in Boeun area been selected since the area has been experienced tremendous amount of landslide occurrence. The geometric characteristics of the slope and the mechanical properties of soils like to friction angle and cohesion were obtained. In addition, coefficient of variation (COV) values in the uncertain parameters were varied from 10% to 30% in order to evaluate the effect of the uncertainty. The analysis results showed that the probabilistic analysis method can reduce the effect of uncertainty involved in input parameters.
