영유아의 교육 및 보육기관 이용과 기관유형선택에 영향을 미치는 사회인구학적 요인 (Use of Early Childhood Care Centers and the Sociodemographic Factors of Choosing an Institute)

  • The purpose of this study is to offer essential information related to early childhood education and care policy. Using the Korea Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS) Vol.5., this study analyzed sociodemographic factors that decide the use and type of institute for early childhood education and care. The following results are obtained: First, it is not easy for young children under three years old to use education and care institutes because of their preference for home care. Second, the mother's job status affects the child's use of child care centers and private institutes for education except for the using of early child education centers. Third, the affecting main factors for the use of child care centers are quite similar to critical factors for use of the private institute for education. Thus, young children using the private institute for education could be interpreted as coming from a low-income class compared with the children using the early child education centers.

사교육 패턴과 학습습관이 학업성취도에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Private Education Patterns and Study Habits on Academic Achievement)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the patterns of private education, investigate the characteristics of private education patterns, and analyze the differences in study habits and academic achievement of youth on the basis of private education patterns. In this study, we used the data from the 2012 Panel of the Korea Children and Youth Panel Study by the National Youth Policy Institute. The subjects of this study were ninth-grade students and their parents. The statistical methods used for the analysis were two-step clustering, Chi-squared test, analysis of variance, and multiple regression. The major findings were as follows: first, private education was classified into three patterns, namely financial investment, time investment, and reduction of investment; and four categories, namely; private education methodology, private education time, private education expenses, and number of youth with access to private education. Second, the statistically significant socio-demographic characteristics of private education patterns were parents' education, parents' job type, father's working hours, sex of children, housing form, and income. Third, the study found that financial investment and a reduce of investment led to better study habits and academic achievement than time investment and no investment. Fourth, private education and study habits showed statistically meaningful effects on academic achievement; in particular, study habits had strong effects on academic achievement. Based on the results, a variety of educational programs for the improvement of the study habits of the youth were suggested.

가계의 재무구조가 사교육비지출에 미치는 영향 - 소득계층별 접근연구 - (The Effect of Household Financial System on Private Education Expenses - Focused on Income Classification -)

  • This study is to investigate the important factor for household private education expenditure. Especially, this study analyzed the influence of financial management characteristics. For this, the income level is classified by comparative poverty and analyzed the influence power The data for this study was "the Korean Labor Panel" conducted by Korea Labor Institute in 2000. The result showed the demographic factors by the income level and financial characteristics have big difference. Also, income level affects private education expenditure. For lower income level, demographic factors affect more than financial factors. This result explained the private education expenditure as luxurious goods. For middle income level, financial factors affect more than demographic factors. This explained the private education expenditure as choice goods. For upper income level, the private education expenditure was explained as investment goods.

민간자격 국가공인제도의 효과 (The Performance of the National Authorization System of Private Qualification)

  • 민간자격 국가공인제도가 시행된 지 5년이 넘었지만, 동 제도의 효과에 대한 검증이 이루어지고 있지 않다. 이러한 현실에서 동 연구는 민간자격 국가공인사업의 전반적 운영현황을 살펴보고, 공인민간자격이 자격취득자에게 미치는 경제적 효과, 경제외적 효과를 살펴보았다. 그 결과 민간자격 공인 후, 자격 취득자의 취업촉진에 다소 긍정적 영향은 있으나, 임금, 승진 등의 경제적 효과는 없었다. 경제외적 효과에 있어서도 고용불안 감소와 같은 심리적 만족은 있으나, 직무수행능력 향상, 인력의 전문성 향상 등과 같은 실질적 부분의 긍정적 효과는 없는 것으로 나타났다.

영재들은 왜 사교육을 받을까?: 초등 영재의 사교육 실태 및 참여 결정요인 분석 (Why Gifted Students Participate in Private Education?: A Study on the Current Status and Key Factors of the Attendance in Private Education)

  • 본 연구에서는 서울, 경기, 인천의 초등학교 영재학급 학생들과 일반학생들의 사교육 실태를 비교하고, 이들 및 이들의 부모가 인식하는 사교육 참여결정 요인을 분석하고자 하였다. 연구결과 영재학생의 95.9%, 일반학생의 94.6%가 현재 사교육에 참여하고 있어 영재여부에 상관없이 대부분의 학생들이 사교육을 받고 있는 것으로 드러났다. 사교육 형태는 '학원 수강'이 가장 많은 것으로 나타났으며, 현재 받고 있는 사교육 과목은 영어와 수학이 가장 많은 것으로 나타났다. 하루 평균 사교육을 위해 보내는 시간은 2~3시간이 가장 많았다. 자녀의 월 평균 사교육비 지출비용은 영재와 일반 모두에서 한 자녀 당 '40~60만원 미만'이 가장 높은 비율을 차지하였다. 사교육실태와 관련된 항목 대부분에서 영재와 일반 학생 간에 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 사교육참여결정 요인과 관련해서는 영재학생의 경우 '학습관련능력 배양' 요인, '학교 성적 관리' 요인, '주변의 영향' 요인 순으로, 일반학생과 일반학부모의 경우에는 '학습관련능력 배양' 요인, '학교 성적 관리' 요인 순으로 사교육 참여 결정에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 다소 상이하게 영재 학생 학부모는 '학습관련능력 배양'과 '진학'을 위해 사교육에 자녀를 참여시키는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과의 함의가 실천적 맥락에서 논의되었다.

The Impact of Housing Prices and Private Education Costs on Fertility Rates

  • The Study analyzed the effect of private education costs and housing prices on the total fertility rates in 16 metropolitan cities in Korea from 2009 to 2021, and estimated the contribution rates of each variable on the decrease in the total fertility rate. Using a dynamic panel data model considering the time series correlation of the total fertility rates, the total fertility rates for the year was positively (+) affected by the total fertility rates of the previous year, and the increase in apartment sales and Jeonse prices in the previous year reduced the total fertility rates. In addition, the increase in private education costs per capita in the previous year was analyzed to consistently reduce the total fertility rates.

공교육과 사교육에서 교수자의 교수방법 분석 (The Study of Comparison on Teaching Methods between a Public education and a Private education)

  • 본 연구는 공교육과 사교육에서 수학교육이 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지를 이해에 의한 수학교육을 강조한 Richard R. Skemp의 이론에 기초하여 알아보고자 하였다. 이 연구에서는 학교교사와 학원강사의 교수방법을 비교하였고 교수자가 사용하는 교재분석도 병행하였다. 그 결과 학교와 학원에서 사용하는 교재 모두 학생들이 관계적 이해를 하기에 충분한 교재는 아니었지만, 학원교재보다 학교교재가 학생들에게 더 적절하였다. 그리고 학교교사의 교수방법이 학원강사의 교수방법보다 학생들이 관계적 스키마를 형성할 수 있도록 하는데 도움이 되었다. 이와 같은 결과를 통해, 이해를 바탕으로 한 수학교육이 학원보다 학교에서 이루어지고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 따라서 학생들은 이러한 사실을 인지하여 학교에서의 수학교육을 신뢰해야 한다.

개발주체별 자연휴양림 시설물의 차이 (Differences in Facilities of Natural Recreation Forests Developed by Public and Private Bodies)

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the difference in facilities of natural recreation forests developed by public and private body to answer the research that what is the difference in development of natural recreation forest between public and private developer\ulcorner After reviewing the literatures, developer's decision-making and motivation of investment, and the planning process of natural recreation forest, we had constructed th conceptual framework and have found the hypothesis of this research. Using data on development status of natural recreation forests and questionnaire surveying of 625 visitors from 9 among 72 natural recreation forests in Korea, We analyzed the data through the comparison of quantity of facilities per 1000 visitors and logistic regression method for quality of facilities. We have found that 1) the six facilities have been turned out to be statistically significant in determining the difference of public and private recreation forests. i.e., infrastructure including roads, maintenance and information and lodging and evacuation, indoor education, outdoor education, and shopping, 2) public recreation forests are well equipped such basic facility as roads, maintenance and information, lodging and evacuation while private recreation forests are well equipped such facility as indoor education, outdoor education, and shopping, and 3) the importance of such facility as roads, maintenance and information, lodging and evacuation, outdoor education, and shopping have been turned out to have 1.99, 2.26, 1.99, 3.01 and 2.24 times more important than that of indoor education, respectively. We can conclude that public recreation forest seems to be equipped with the facilities for sound recreational opportunities for general public, and private recreation forest turned out to have more facilities for pursuit of profits, installed basic facilities for user convenience and service, and special facilities for attracting user and raising revenue. Using the results of this research, we can make a guideline for a market positioning, and standards and provisions of natural recreation forests. We suggest that the relationship between user-satisfaction and recreation facility is needed to be examined in the future research.

Autonomy, Incentives, and School Performance: Evidence from the 2009 Autonomous Private High School Policy in Korea

  • Improving the quality of school education is one of the key policy concerns in Korea. This paper examines whether providing schools with adequate autonomy and incentives can meet the policy goals by looking at a recent policy reform in Korea. In 2009, the Korean government granted autonomy to certain private high schools on the condition that no financial subsidies would be provided to the schools. Because the autonomous private high schools cannot receive a subsidy, they have a strong incentive to meet parental demands because schools failing to meet these demands will lose students and will have to close. Applying the value-added model to longitudinal data at the student level, I find that students entering these autonomous schools show faster growth in their academic achievement than their peers in traditional non-autonomous schools. These results suggest that providing schools with autonomy and incentives can be a useful policy tool for improving school education.

Having Private Cancer Insurance in Korea: Gender Differences

  • Background: As coverage of public insurance is not sufficient to cover diagnosis or treatment of cancer, having private health insurance is important to prepare for unexpected expenses of cancer. The purpose of this study was to assess factors associated with having private cancer insurance, considering gender among the socio-demographic factors and health behavior. Materials and Methods: We used data from the 2011 Korea Health Panel, which included 10,871 participants aged 20 years and older. Socio-demographics, health behavior, and perceived cancer risk were the independent variables and having private cancer insurance was the dependent variable. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with having private cancer insurance. Results: The variables relating to middle age, higher education, higher household income, married men, and the perceived cancer risk groups of 1-10% and 11-30% were significantly associated with having private cancer insurance. Additionally, females who had private non-cancer health insurance were positively associated with the dependent variables (OR=1.36; 95% CI=1.17-1.57). Education, smoking status, exercise, and perceived cancer risk possibility were significantly associated with having private cancer insurance only among women. The men lowered the overall percentages of those having private cancer insurance (OR=0.53, 95% CI=0.45-0.63). Conclusions: We found that there were significant differences between men and women who had private cancer insurance. Women with private cancer insurance are more likely to follow precautionary health behavior than men. This could be interpreted as resulting from masculine ideologies. It is important to make males recognize the seriousness of the cancer risk. In general, household income was highly associated with private cancer insurance. These results reveal an inequity among the buyers of private cancer insurance in terms of economic status level, education level, and health condition.
