  • In the design of super tankers or LNG carriers, which transport a large amount of liquid in the cargo tanks, the structural d11mage due to liquid sloshing is an important problem. The impact pressure from sloshing is most violent when the liquid motion of a partially filled tank is in resonance with the motion of a ship. In this study, the sloshing natural periods of a baffled tank, often installed to reduce liquid motion, is analyzed. A variational method is adopted to estimate the sloshing natural periods for a prismatic cargo tank with baffles of arbitrary filling depth of liquid; the results are compared with Lloyd's Register regulations on sloshing periods. In this study, using an effective liquid-fill-depth concept, sloshing periods for a baffled tank can be expressed by the same form as rectangular prismatic tanks without baffles. In contrast to Lloyd's Register regulations, which can be applicable only to cargo tanks with constant baffle size and distribution, the present results can be applicable to cases of variable baffle size and distribution.

  • A new computer code, named CORONA (Core Reliable Optimization and thermo-fluid Network Analysis), was developed for the core thermo-fluid analysis of a prismatic gas cooled reactor. The CORONA code is targeted for whole-core thermo-fluid analysis of a prismatic gas cooled reactor, with fast computation and reasonable accuracy. In order to achieve this target, the development of CORONA focused on (1) an efficient numerical method, (2) efficient grid generation, and (3) parallel computation. The key idea for the efficient numerical method of CORONA is to solve a three-dimensional solid heat conduction equation combined with one-dimensional fluid flow network equations. The typical difficulties in generating computational grids for a whole core analysis were overcome by using a basic unit cell concept. A fast calculation was finally achieved by a block-wise parallel computation method. The objective of the present paper is to summarize the motivation and strategy, numerical approaches, verification and validation, parallel computation, and perspective of the CORONA code.

  • When the temperature of a structure varies, there is a tendency to produce changes in the shape of the structure. The resulting actions may be of considerable importance in the analysis of the structures having non-prismatic members. The computation of design forces for the non-prismatic beams having symmetrical parabolic haunches (NBSPH) is fairly difficult because of the parabolic change of the cross section. Due to their non-prismatic geometrical configuration, their assessment, particularly the computation of fixed-end horizontal forces and fixed-end moments becomes a complex problem. In this study, the efficiency of the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference Systems (ANFIS) in predicting the design forces and the design moments of the NBSPH due to temperature changes was investigated. Previously obtained finite element analyses results in the literature were used to train and test the ANN and ANFIS models. The performances of the different models were evaluated by comparing the corresponding values of mean squared errors (MSE) and decisive coefficients ($R^2$). In addition to this, the comparison of ANN and ANFIS with traditional methods was made by setting up Linear-regression (LR) model.

  • This study presents a non-prismatic beam element for modeling the elastic behavior of steel beams, which have the post-Northridge connections in steel moment frames. The elastic stiffness matrix, including the shear effects for non-prismatic members with reduced beam section (RBS) connection, is in closed form. A simplified approach is also suggested, which uses a prismatic beam element to model beams with the RBS connection. This method can estimate quiteexactly the maximum story drift ratios of frames with the RBS connection. The effects of reduced beam section connection on the elastic stiffness of steel moment frames were investigated. The selection of a proper model to account for deformations at the joint might have a more important role in estimating the maximum story drift ratios of frames with better accuracy than the RBS cutouts.

  • The main aim of this research was to investigate the shear strength of non-prismatic steel fiber reinforced concrete beams under monotonic loading considering different parameters. Experimental program included tests on fifteen non-prismatic reinforced concrete beams divided into three groups. For the first and the second groups, different parameters were taken into consideration which are: steel fibers content, shear span to minimum depth ratio ($a/d_{min}$) and tapering angle (${\alpha}$). The third group was designed mainly to optimize the geometry of the non-prismatic concrete beams with the same concrete volume while the steel fiber ratio and the shear span were left constant in this group. The presence of steel fibers in concrete led to an increase in the load-carrying capacity in a range of 10.25%-103%. Also, the energy absorption capacity was increased due to the addition of steel fibers in a range of 18.17%-993.18% and the failure mode was changed from brittle to ductile. Tapering angle had a clear effect on the shear strength of test specimens. The increase in tapering angle from ($7^{\circ}$) to ($12^{\circ}$) caused an increase in the ultimate shear capacity for the test specimens. The maximum increase in ultimate load was 45.49%. The addition of steel fibers had a significant impact on the post-cracking behavior of the test specimens. Empirical equation for shear strength prediction at cracking limit state was proposed. The predicted cracking shear strength was in good agreement with the experimental findings.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the differences of the conchiolin layer, prismatic layer and nacreous layer deposited within the shell of the freshwater family Unionidae. shether they possess species-specific characteristics and differences of the microstructure of these layers, A Scanning electron microscopic obwervations were conducted on seven species. The results indicate that all species possess thin and homogeneous layers within the periostracum. The prismatic layers of these species were composed of ednsely packed prisms. The prismatic layers of the shell in six species were typical shape of prisms. especially Inio douglasiae and Lamprotual gottschei. But, in Unio douglasiae sinuolatus, it was irregular and oblique prism shape. The nacreous layer of weven unionids characterized by possession of three types by lamillae shape: thin and homogeneous on genus Anodonta(0.4 pm size of lamella), Unio(1.3pm) and Lamprotual (1.7pm), homogeneous in shape and irregular in size of lamillae in Lanceolaria(1.0 pm)and irregulat in shape and size in Solenaia(0.2-0.4 pm). The microstructure of the naceous layer may be useful as a taxonomic character at the generic level.

  • To understand the role of hemocytes in the shell repair process, a hole was drilled in the right valves of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, and the repair process was observed. Histological observations suggested that the exterior surface of the shell was repaired by aggregated hemocytes. The nuclei of the hemocytes were cleary stained in the regenerated shell while appearing fragmented after calcification at the $7^{th}$ day. Globular calcium granules were genegenerated from the hemocytic monolyer after 6 days of incubation which were morphologically and chemically identical with those from prismatic shell. Our finding suggested that the repaired prismatic shell was composed by aggregated hemocytes and that their endogenous calcium component might support the nucleation of calcium biomineralization during shell repair.

  • There are a number of practical uses for devices which are capable of piping large amounts of light: illumination of areas where there would be maintenance, safety, or security problems with electronic light sources; piping sunlight into indoor areas for illumination; and the conversion of high luminous efficacy, good color quality, high intensity discharge lamps into more acceptable linear of area sources of light. Prism light guides are hollow structures which pipe light by means of total internal reflectin(TIR). These devices are unique in their ability to combine the efficiency of TIR with the relatively low cost of hollow structure. An important application stems from their ability to transform a point source of light such as an incandescent or discharge lamp into a linear or area source of light or illumination. We report the development of an economical, flexible prismatic film for fabricating the light guide wall. This guide geometries and films are currently under development.

  • This paper presents a method to measure tile position and orientation of a prismatic polyhedral object (of unknown width, length, height, and number of vertices) using machine vision. The width, length, and origin of workplace where an object is lying are defined as Preliminary operation. The edges of an object are detected from captured image using least sum of square error. The information of an object is determined from the geometric relationships between edges. As an user interface, a versatile image processing program is developed in several modules, and renders a very useful 3D measurement at a limited constraints when adopted in automation of production process. The flexibility of camera position from the algorithm developrf can be used for automated pick and place operations and feeding workpiece u: ;ing assembly robot.

  • Most of Commercial Remote Center Compliance(RCC) devices have been designed using deforma ble structures. In this work, we propose another type of assembly devices which generate the compliance effec ts by attaching the compliances (or spring) at the prismatic joints of the griven mechainsm. First, the kinematic analysis for a parallel-type planar 3-degree-of-freedom mechanism is performed using modified transfer method of generalized coordinate. Then, compliance characteristics for the mechanism using prismatic joint compliances are investigated. In particular, when the system maintains its symmetric configuration, the mechanism is show n to have RCC points at the center of the workspace. Finally, sensitivity analysis around RCC points is perfor med.
