Model studies on the response of homgeneous earth embankment dams subjected to strike-slip fault movement have been penomed via centrifuge and finite element analysis. The centrifuge model tests have shown that crack development in earth embankment experiences two major patters: shear failure deep inside the embankment and tension failure near the surface. The shear rupture zone develops from the base level and propagates upward continuously in the transverse direction but allows no open leakage chnnel. The open tensile cracks develop near the surface of the embankment, but they disappear deep in the embankment. The functional relationship has been developed based on the results of the centrifuge model tests incorporating tile variables of amount of fault movement, embankment geometry, and crack propagation extent in earth des. This set of information can be used as a guide line to evaluate a "transient" safety of the duaged embankment subjected to strike-slip fault movement. The finite element analysis has supplemented the additional expluations on crack development behavior identified from the results of the centrifuge model tests. The bounding surface time-independent plasticity soil model was employed in the numerical analysis. Due to the assumption of continuum in the current version of the 3-D FEM code, the prediction of the soil structure response beyond the failure condition was not quantitatively accurate. However, the fundamental mechanism of crack development was qualitatively evaluated based on the stress analysis for the deformed soil elements of the damaged earth embankment. The tensile failure zone is identified when the minor principal stress of the deformed soil elements less than zero. The shear failure zone is identified when the stress state of the deformed soil elements is at the point where the critical state line intersects the bounding surface.g surface.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the stress distribution in the bone around dental implants supporting mandibular overdenture according to the number of implant and the type of attachment. Two or four implants were placed in an edentulous mandibular model and three dimensional photoelastic stress analysis was carried out to measure the fringe order around the implant supporting structure and also to calculate principal stress components at cervical area of each implant. The attachments tested were rigid and resilient type of Dolder bar, Round bar, Hader bar and Dal-Ro attchment. The results were as follows ; 1. In 2-implant supported overdenture using Round bar, Hader bar, and Dal-Ro attachment, compressive stress pattern was observed on the supporting structure of implant on loaded side, while tensile stress pattern in unloaded side. 2. In 2-implant supported overdenture using Dolder bar, the rigid Dolder bar shared the occlusal loads between 2 implants in a more favorable manner than was exhibited by the resilient type, while the resilient type placed a more stress on the distocervical area of the implant on the loaded side. But compressive stress pattern was observed in both the loaded and unloaded sides in either case. 3. In 2-implant supported overdenture, rigid and resilient type of Dolder bar exhibited more cross arch involvement than the Round bar, Hader bar, or Dal-Ro attachment. 4. In 4-implant supported overdenture using resilient Dolder bar and Hader bar, stress turned out to be distributed evenly among the implants between loaded and unloaded side, but thor was no reduction in the magnitude of the stress in the surrounding structure of implant contratry to 2-implant supported overdenture. 5. The stress pattern at cervical area of implant was different with the number of implant or the type of attachment but the overload, harmful to surrounding structure of implant, was not observed.
A numerical model that can simulate the nonlinear behavior of ultra high strength fiber-reinforced concrete (UHSFRC) structures subject to monotonic loadings is introduced. Since engineering material properties of UHSFRC are remarkably different from those of normal strength concrete and engineered cementitious composite, classification of the mechanical characteristics related to the biaxial behavior of UHSFRC, from the designation of the basic material properties such as the uniaxial stress-strain relationship of UHSFRC to consideration of the bond stress-slip between the reinforcement and surrounding concrete with fiber, is conducted in this paper in order to make possible accurate simulation of the cracking behavior in UHSFRC structures. Based on the concept of the equivalent uniaxial strain, constitutive relationships of UHSFRC are presented in the axes of orthotropy which coincide with the principal axes of the total strain and rotate according to the loading history. This paper introduces a criterion to simulate the tension-stiffening effect on the basis of the force equilibriums, compatibility conditions, and bond stress-slip relationship in an idealized axial member and its efficiency is validated by comparison with available experimental data. Finally, the applicability of the proposed numerical model is established through correlation studies between analytical and experimental results for idealized UHSFRC beams.

Stress distribution and interfacial debonding process at the interface between a rubber mold and a powder compact were analyzed during unloading under cold isostatic pressing. The Cap model proposed by Lee and Kim was used for densification behavior of powder based on the parameters involved in the yield function of general Cap model and volumetric strain evolution. Cohesive elements incorporating a bilinear cohesive zone model were also used to simulate interfacial debonding process. The Cap model and the cohesive zone model were implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS). Densification behavior of powder was investigated under various interface conditions between a rubber mold and a powder compact during loading. The residual tensile stress at the interface was investigated for rubber molds with various elastic moduli under perfect bonding condition. The variations of the elastic energy density of a rubber mold and the maximum principal stress of a powder compact were calculated for several interfacial strengths at the interface during unloading.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of excessive occlusal loading on stress distribution on four type of cervical lesion, using a three dimensional finite element analysis (3D FEA). The extracted maxillary second premolar was scanned serially with Micro-CT. The 3D images were processed by 3D-DOCTOR. ANSYS was used to mesh and analyze 3D FE model. Four different lesion configurations representative of the various types observed clinically for teeth were studied. A static point load of 500N was applied to the buccal and lingual cusp (Load A and B). The principal stresses in lesion apex, and vertical sectioned margin of cervical wall were analyzed. The results were as follows 1. The patterns of stress distribution were similar but the magnitude was different in four types of lesion 2. The peak stress was observed at mesial corner and also stresses concentrated at lesion apex. 3. The compressive stress under load A and the tensile stress under load B were dominant stress. 4. Under the load, lesion can be increased and harmful to tooth structure unless restored.

Elastic and elasto-plastic stress analyses of AlN/Cu and AlN/W pints produced by active-metal brazing method using Ag-Cu-Ti insert-metal were performed with use of Finite-Element-Method(FEM). The results of stress analyses were compared with those from the pint strength tests and the observations of fracture behaviors. It was shown that a remarkably larger maximum principal stress is built in the AlN/Cu pint compared to the A1N/ W joint. Especially, the stress concentration with tensile component was confirmed at the free surface close to the bonded interface of AlN/Cu. The elasto-plastic analysis under consideration of stress relaxation effect of Ag-Cu-Ti insert possessing a so-called 'soft-metal effect' showed that the insert leads to a lowering of maximum principal stress in AlNiCu pint, even though an increase of the insert thickness above 100$\mu\textrm{m}$ could not bring its further decrease. The maximum pint strengths measured by shear test were 52 and 108 MPa for AlNiCu and AlN/W pints. respectively. Typical fractures of AlN/Cu pints occurred in a form of 'dome' which initiated from the free surface of AlN close to the bonded interface and proceeded towards the AlN inside forming a large angle. AlN/W pints were usually fractured at AlN side along the interface of AlN/insert-metal.

The deterioration of concrete structure due to corrosion of the reinforcement has created big financial losses on the overall industries. The volume expansion of the corrosion products causes internal pressure to concrete wall around reinforcing bar. If the maximum principal stress induced by internal pressure exceeds the tensile strength of the concrete at any point of time, a crack forms at any point of material. Therefore, in terms of life assessment of concrete structure, it is very important to predict the amount of corrosion products which induces initial concrete cracking. With this objective, this paper proposes the critical amount of corrosion products at interface between reinforcement and concrete using finite element analysis. If an actual survey of corrosion rates could be made, the model might supply information for condition assessment of existing concrete structure. As the mechanical properties of corrosion product and instantaneous geometry of corroded steel are considered in the analysis, the value obtained will be more realistic.
A practical constitutive equation with sufficient generality is proposed for porous materials to deal with plastic pore compaction and pore related strain-hardening. With an application of this proposed model, finite element calculations are executed for the compaction of a porous material. Results show powerful potential of finite element method in a quantitative investigation of the process of the compaction. Special attention is given to the process of unloading during which the development of tensile principal stress may lead to phenomena such as lamination and end-capping.
In this work, effects of hyper-elastic rubber material properties on the indentation load-deflection curve and subindenter deformation are first examined via [mite element (FE) analyses. An optimal data acquisition spot is selected, which features maximum strain energy density and negligible frictional effect. We then contrive two normalized functions. which map an indentation load vs. deflection curve into a strain energy density vs. first invariant curve. From the strain energy density vs. first invariant curve, we can extract the rubber material properties. This new spherical indentation approach produces the rubber material properties in a manner more effective than the common uniaxial tensile/compression tests. The indentation approach successfully measures the rubber material properties and the corresponding nominal stress.strain curve with an average error less than 3%.

This study aims to assess the effect of postulated seismic loads on the structural integrity of a spent nuclear fuel dry storage facility. Firstly, three-dimensional modal and response spectrum analyses were carried out. With regard to the latter analysis, the effect of incident angles against two horizontal and one vertical response spectra was also considered. Results showed that even though two critical locations were predicted at the longitudinal axis central part of upper flow path as well as the end discontinuity part of upper and lower flow paths connector, their maximum principal stress values were less than the tensile strength. Moreover, since the influence of vertical angle was 87% higher than that of horizontal angle in particular, which should be carefully handled to demonstrate integrity of the facility.
