  • We examined the effect of salt marsh vegetation on the benthic environment in macro-tidal flats at Donggeomdo, Ganghwa, on the west coast of Korea. Nine stations were established along a transect across the tidal flats, including salt marsh, and field sampling was conducted monthly from July 1997 to June 1998. During the study period, environmental parameters fluctuated as follows: salinity, 15.0 to 28.2 psu, exposure time, 613 to 702 hr/m, inundation time, 28 to 117 hr/m, sediment organic carbon, 0.71 to 1.34%, nitrogen, 0.07 to 0.16%, sulfur from 0.07 to 0.22%, mean grain size from 6.3 to $6.9{\phi}$, water content from 19.4 to 44.4%, water temperature from 4.4 to $20.4^{\circ}C$ and temperature of the surface sediments, 2.7 to $31.1^{\circ}C$, in total, seven halophyte species were sampled and found to be vertically distributed across the tidal levels. Carer scabrifolia, Suaeda maritima, Limonium tetragonum and Phragmites communis dominated the upper zone of the salt marsh, Juncus haenkei, Triglochin maritimum and P. communis dominated the middle zone, and Suaeda japonica predominated in the lower area. Principal component analysis (PCA) and non-metric multi-dimensional scaling revealed that the zonation of halophytes was related to environmental variables such as salinity and exposure time. The halophyte communities were likely related to the organic content of the surface sediment.

  • We investigated food webs of a $Salix$ $subfragilis$-dominated wetland in the Janghang wetland in the Hangang estuary, which is very close to the Demilitarized Zone, along the west coast of Korea. Our study focused on understanding sesarmine crab ($Sesarma$ $dehaani$)-related food webs in a $S.$ $subfragilis$ forest. For our study, we used carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes and fatty acid biomarkers. We collected samples of plants, animals, and detrital sediment from four quadrats ($5{\times}5m^2$) set in the $S.$ $subfragilis$ community. Samples were collected from September 2006 to June 2009, except during the winter hibernation period of $S.$ $dehaani$. In the wet season, the sediment showed relatively high ${\delta}^{13}C$ and low ${\delta}^{15}N$ signatures compared with relatively low ${\delta}13C$ and high ${\delta}15N$ signatures in the dry season. Mature $S.$ $dehaani$ appeared to feed on fresh leaves and other carbon sources, such as immature individuals or fish, in addition to detrital sediment, which appeared to be the main carbon source for immature crabs. Principal component analysis of fatty acid biomarkers of $S.$ $dehaani$ showed a clear difference between immature individuals (10-30 mm) and mature ones (larger than 30 mm), indicating that the main food source for immature crabs was detrital sediment, whereas mature crabs foraged plants in addition to consuming detrital sediment. On the basis of our results from stable isotope and fatty acid analyses, mature $S.$ $dehaani$ appeared to feed on detrital sediment and fresh leaves of $S.$ $subfragilis$ in summer in addition to engaging in cannibalism of immature individuals.

  • In the study, the water quality of the Imjin River basin with pollutants of changing characteristics it was determined through statistical analysis, correlation analysis, principle component and factor analysis, and cluster analysis. Among all analyzed data points, the average water quality concentration at the Sincheon 3 site shows high levels of BOD 13.4 mg/L, COD 19.9 mg/L, T-N 11.145 mg/L, T-P 0.336 mg/L, TOC 14.2 mg/L, indicating that Sincheon basin requires intersive water quality management out of the entire drainage basin. The correlational analysis of comprehensive water quality data shows statistically significant correlation between COD, TOC, BOD, T-N water quality factors, as well as finding of high correlation between organic and nutrients. The principal component analysis show that 2 main components being extracted at 81.221% from the measuring station's entire data, while seasonal data show 3 main components being extracted at 96.241%. Factor analysis of the entire data set and the seasonal data identify BOD, COD, T-N, T-P, TOC as the common factors influencing water quality. The spatial and temporal cluster analysis showed 4 groups and 3 groups, respectively, according to seasonal characteristics and land use. By analysing the water quality factors for the Imjin River basins over an 8 year period, with consideration to the spatial and temporal characteristics, this study will become the fundamental analytic data that will help understand the future changes of water quality in the Imjin River basin.

  • In order to clarify the benthic environmental properties as a part of a study on the macrobenthic community in the Chinhae Bay System, water temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen (DO) in surface and bottom water layers, mean grain size (${\phi}$) and sediment organic carborn (SOC) in surface sediment were analyzed at twelve stations during the period from June 1987 to May 1990. A high sediment organic carbon and hypoxic condition in bottom water due to the development of summer stratification and fine sediment texture toward the inner bay were important environmental characteristics of Chinhae Bay. Hypoxic conditions began to develop in the inner bay from May, and gradually spread toward the outer bay in summer with a peak in September when half the bay was affected by this oxygen deficiency. Recovery from this hypoxic condition in the bottom layer was observed from the beginning of autumn together with a disappearance of the summer stratification. Principal component analyses were carried out from the following five environmental variables:mean water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen in the bottom layer and mean grain size, sediment organic carbon in surface sediment. The twelve stations were classified into four areal groups based on the analyses. The division of the areal groups had high correlations to the sediment organic carbon content.

  • Staphylococcus species have a ubiquitous habitat in a wide range of foods, thus the ability to identify staphylococci at the species level is critical in the food industry. In this study, we performed rapid identification of Staphylococcus species using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). MALDI-TOF MS was evaluated for the identification of Staphylococcus reference strains (n = 19) and isolates (n = 96) from various foods with consideration for the impact of sample preparation methods and incubation period. Additionally, the spectra of isolated Staphylococcus strains were analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) and a main spectra profile (MSP)-based dendrogram. MALDI-TOF MS accurately identified Staphylococcus reference strains and isolated strains: the highest performance was by the EX method (83.3~89.5% accuracy) at species level identification (EDT, 70.3~78.9% accuracy; DT, less than 46.3~63.2% accuracy) of 24-h cultured colonies. Identification results at the genus level were 100% accurate at EDT, EX sample preparation and 24-h incubation time. On the other hand, the DT method showed relatively low identification accuracy in all extraction methods and incubation times. The analyzed spectra and MSP-based dendrogram showed that the isolated Staphylococcus strains were characterized at the species level. The performance analysis of MALDI-TOF MS shows the method has the potential ability to discriminate between Staphylococcus species from foods in Korea. This study provides valuable information that MALDI-TOF MS can be applied to monitor microbial populations and pathogenic bacteria in the food industry thereby contributing to food safety.

  • In this study, we investigated the residual properties of tebuconazole-treated pigs. Twenty pigs were treated with different concentrations (0.25, 1.25, 2.5, 12.5, and 25 mg/kg bw/d) of tebuconazole for 28 d. Blood biochemistry, histology, and residual levels were analyzed using the VetTest analyzer, Masson's trichrome staining kit, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, respectively. The final body weights were not significantly different between the control and treatment groups. Alkaline phosphatase, blood urea nitrogen, cholesterol, and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase levels were significantly different from those of the control after exposure for 14 d. However, alanine aminotransferase levels showed changes only after exposure to pesticides for 28 d. The biochemical parameters were separated during the experimental period (14 d versus 28 d) by principal component analysis. Based on variable importance plots, blood urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio, blood urea nitrogen, glucose, and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase are candidate biomarkers for tebuconazole exposure. The residual levels were observed at T4 (12.5 mg/kg bw/d) and T5 (25 mg/kg bw/d) in the liver and fat tissues, respectively. Fibrosis increased in the liver, kidney, and fat tissues, depending on the tebuconazole concentration. In conclusion, the residue limits of tebuconazole and the physiological changes caused by dietary tebuconazole in pigs provide important information for establishing maximum residue limits of pork and pork products.

  • Waxy corn (Zea mays L.), which contains homozygous mutant alleles for the waxy1 (wx1) gene, is widely consumed as a snack food in Asia. This study evaluated sixteen agronomic characteristics of inbred Korean waxy corn lines to aid development of high-quality waxy corn cultivars. The plant materials studied were 177 inbred waxy corn lines developed by the National Institute of Crop Science, Rural Development Administration, Republic of Korea. For the tested lines, days to tasseling and silking averaged 77.69±2.22 days (with a range of 56-97 days), and 81.12±7.56 days (66-99 days), respectively. Plant length ranged from 88 to 237 cm (averaged 164.88±22.67 cm), ear length averaged 11.75±2.52 cm (5.0-18.5 cm), and ear width averaged 2.94±0.68 cm (1.4-4.5 cm). The number of rows on each ear of corn averaged 12.22±2.22 (7-32 rows) and the kernel number averaged 24.30±4.22 (9-37 kernels) per row. The crude protein content was 12.05±1.53% (8.90-21.80%) and total starch content was 69.27±5.74% (49.5-83.9%). Principal component analysis revealed that ear width, grain length, ear length, days to tasseling, days to silking, percentage of ear setting height, and total starch are features that allow distinction between the 177 waxy inbred corn lines. Hierarchical cluster analysis identified twelve waxy inbred lines that produce tall plants and have a short silking period. These lines may improve yield among quickly growing corn varieties.

  • Temporal and spatial variations of water quality were investigated in the Cheonsu Bay of Yellow Sea, Korea from 2010 to 2011. Water samples were collected at 16 stations and physicochemical parameters were analyzed including water temperature, salinity, suspended solids (SS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO), Chlorophyll a and nutrients. Spatial distribution patterns of all survey items were not clear among stations but the bimonthly variations were distinct except the bottom water of the suspended solids. The trend analysis by principal component analysis (PCA) during 2 years revealed the significant variations in water quality in the study area. Spatial water qualities were discriminated into 3 clusters by PCA; station cluster in the surface water 1, 2~11, and 12~16, the bottom water 1, 2~7, and 8~16. Annual bimonthly water qualities were clearly discriminated into 3 clusters by PCA. But tend of cluster in the surface and bottom water was difference, period most of the research was low in nutrient. Ecology-based water quality criteria was a good level of grade II. Bimonthly results are shown as III grade(normal) at June and August, II grade(good) at October and December and I grade for February and April. Water quality was showed by the input of fresh water same as those of Kyoungin coastal area, Asan coastal area, Gunsan coastal and Mokpo coastal area in the Cheonsu.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among perceived health status, self-esteem, self-efficacy and health promoting behavior, and to determine the predictors of health promoting behavior in post-mastectomy patients. The study, a descriptive correlational study, was done with structural questionnaires. A total of 51 post-mastectomy subjects from C university hospital in Kwang-ju, South Korea completed mail-in self-reporting questionnaires during a three month period from March to June, 1999. The data were collected using Lawstone's(1982) perceived health status scale, Rosenberg's(1965) self-esteem scale, the modified self-efficacy scale(Shere et al, 1982), and the modified health promoting lifestyle profile (Walker et al, 1987). The data obtained were analyzed according to percentage, mean and standard deviation, principal component analysis, varimax rotation, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. The results were as follows: 1. The health promoting behavior measurement resulted in six factors. Each factor was labelled as follows: self-actualization, nutrition, stress management, exercise, health responsibility and interpersonal support. The total percent of variance explained by the six factors was 58.4%. 2. The mean score of health promoting behavior was 85.92(range 58~117). The scores of six factor were nutrition 3.20, self-actualization 2.59, stress management 2.58, interpersonal support 2.58, health responsibility 2.49, and exercise 2.34 on a four point scale. 3. When the score of health promoting behavior factors were compared by general characteristics. Factor I: self-actualization, differed significantly by the frequency of pregnancy (F=3.06, p=.037). Factor II: nutrition differed significantly by drinking experience(t=-2.26, p=.028) and the pre- or post stage of menopause(F=2.69, p=078). FactorIII: stress management differed significantly depending on regularity of mensturation(t=-2.12, p= .042). FactorIV: exercise differed significantly by type of religion (F=2.49, p=.072), marital status(F=5.03, p=.010), and feeding type (F=2.64, p=.036). Factor V: health responsibility differed significantly by regularity of mensturation(t=2.18, p=.037). 4. The total health promoting behavior score was significantly related to self-esteem and perceived health status(r=.610, p.006; r= .378, p=.006). The score of selfactualization also corresponded with selfesteem and perceived health status(r=.556, p=.001; r=.343, p=.013). 5. The predictor to explain the score of health promoting behavior was self-esteem, which accounted for 37.1% of the total variance. The predictor to explain the score of self-actualization was self-esteem, which accounted for 30.9% of the total variance. The score of nutrition was primarily affected by both premenopause and drinking experience, which accounted for 13.1% and 9.5% respectively. Finally, the score of exercise was dictated by marriage, Buddhism, no experience of breast feeding, which accounted for 17%, 9.8%, & 5.2% respectively. In conclusion, self-esteem is the main predictor for health promoting behavior in post-mastectomy women. These findings suggest a need for nursing strategies which promote self-esteem in such patients.

  • Seasonal variation in species composition of fishes in the eelgrass bed in Angel Bay of the southern coast of Korea was determined using monthly samples by a beam trawl from April 1998 to March 1999, A total of 39 species, 2,065 individuals and 8,930 g of fishes were collected during the study period. The fish were composed of the small-sized resident species and the juveniles of Leiognathus nuchalis, Pholis nebulosa, Spgnathus schlegeli and Sebastes ineinis predominated in abundance, accounting for $60{\%}$ of total number of individuals. The number of species and biomass were low from December to March when the water temperature was low, The biomass increased by the catch of a large number of L. nuchalis and S. inemis in April and May when the eelgrass grew fast. The fish numbers decreased in June and July when the adults of the resident species declined after the spawning. A large number of juveniles which had released in spring occurred in August. The biomass of fish decreased from September, and a few number of fish were collected in winter. Species were grouped into four by cluster analysis: the warm season group including P. nebulosa, S. schlegeli and L. nuchalis, the cold season group including Chaenogobius heptaoanthus and Platycephalus indieus, the group of fish species occurred during the growing season of eelgrass such as P. couoides, S. inermis and P. perooides, and the group of fish species occurred during decaying season of eelgrass such as S. cirrhifer and H. coronatus. Principal component analysis indicated that seasonal variation in species composition was determined by the water temperature and standing crops of eelgrass.
