The fixed-angle based modified compression field theory (MCFT) was developed to include the slip deformation across the crack, thereby allowing for the non-coincident directions of the principal strain and stress. To investigate the significance of crack modelling on the analysis, a series of tests on beams without transverse reinforcement was predicted by both rotating- and fixed-angle crack models within the frame of the MCFT. The results predicted by the fixed-angle MCFT were comparable to those by the rotating-angle MCFT when the initial crack angle of 45deg. and the related friction law are used.

Objective : The offset connector can allow medial and lateral variability and facilitate intralaminar screw incorporation into the construct. The aim of this study was to compare the biomechanical characteristics of C7 intralaminar screw constructs with and without offset connector using a three dimensional finite element model of a C6-7 cervical spine segment. Methods : Finite element models representing C7 intralaminar screw constructs with and without the offset connector were developed. Range of motion (ROM) and maximum von Mises stresses in the vertebra for the two techniques were compared under pure moments in flexion, extension, lateral bending and axial rotation. Results : ROM for intralaminar screw construct with offset connector was less than the construct without the offset connector in the three principal directions. The maximum von Misses stress was observed in the C7 vertebra around the pedicle in both constructs. Maximum von Mises stress in the construct without offset connector was found to be 12-30% higher than the corresponding stresses in the construct with offset connector in the three principal directions. Conclusion : This study demonstrated that the intralaminar screw fixation with offset connector is better than the construct without offset connector in terms of biomechanical stability. Construct with the offset connector reduces the ROM of C6-7 segment more significantly compared to the construct without the offset connector and causes lower stresses around the C7 pedicle-vertebral body complex.

In this study, the reliability design method developed by Shimosako and Takahashi in 1999 for calculation of the expected sliding distance of the caisson of a vertical breakwater is extended to take into account the variability in wave direction such as directional spreading of waves, obliquity of the deep-water design principal wave direction from the shore-normal direction, and its variation about the design value. To calculate the transformation of random directional waves, the model developed by Kweon et al. in 1997 is used instead of Goda's model, which was developed in 1975 for unidirectional random waves normally incident to a straight coast with parallel depth contours and has been used by Shimosako and Takahashi. The effects of directional spreading and the variation of deep-water principal wave directions were minor compared with those of the obliquity of the deep-water design principal wave direction from the shore-normal direction, which tends to reduce the expected sliding distance as it increases. Especially when we used the field data in a part of east coast of Korea, considering the variability in wave directions reduced the expected sliding distance to about one third of that not considering the directional variability. Reducing the significant wave height calculated at the design site by 6% to correct the effect of wave refraction neglected in using Goda's model was found to be proper when the deep-water design principal wave direction is about 20 degrees. When it is smaller than 20 degrees, a value smaller than 6% should be used, or vice versa. When we designed the caisson with the expected sliding distance to be 30㎝, in the area of water depth of 25 m or smaller, we could reduce the caisson width by about 30% at the maximum compared with the deterministic design, even if we did not consider the variability in wave directions. When we used the field data in a part of east coast of Korea, considering the variability in wave directions reduced the necessary caisson width by about 10% at the maximum compared with that not considering the directional variability, and is needed a caisson width smaller than that of the deterministic design in the whole range of water depth considered (10∼30 m).
Automatic facial expression recognition has many potential applications in different areas of human computer interaction. However, they are not yet fully realized due to the lack of an effective facial feature descriptor. In this paper, we present a new appearance-based feature descriptor, the local directional pattern (LDP), to represent facial geometry and analyze its performance in expression recognition. An LDP feature is obtained by computing the edge response values in 8 directions at each pixel and encoding them into an 8 bit binary number using the relative strength of these edge responses. The LDP descriptor, a distribution of LDP codes within an image or image patch, is used to describe each expression image. The effectiveness of dimensionality reduction techniques, such as principal component analysis and AdaBoost, is also analyzed in terms of computational cost saving and classification accuracy. Two well-known machine learning methods, template matching and support vector machine, are used for classification using the Cohn-Kanade and Japanese female facial expression databases. Better classification accuracy shows the superiority of LDP descriptor against other appearance-based feature descriptors.

In reverse engineering, when a shape containing multi-patched surfaces is digitized, the boundaries of these surfaces should be detected. The objective of this paper is to introduce a computationally efficient segmentation technique for extracting edges, ad partitioning the 3D measuring point data based on the location of the boundaries. The procedure begins with the identification of the edge points. An automatic edge-based approach is developed on the basis of local geometry. A parametric quadric surface approximation method is used to estimate the local surface curvature properties. the least-square approximation scheme minimizes the sum of the squares of the actual euclidean distance between the neighborhood data points and the parametric quadric surface. The surface curvatures and the principal directions are computed from the locally approximated surfaces. Edge points are identified as the curvature extremes, and zero-crossing, which are found from the estimated surface curvatures. After edge points are identified, edge-neighborhood chain-coding algorithm is used for forming boundary curves. The original point set is then broke down into subsets, which meet along the boundaries, by scan line algorithm. All point data are applied to each boundary loops to partition the points to different regions. Experimental results are presented to verify the developed method.

Face recognition has recently become one of the most popular research areas in the fields of computer vision, machine learning, and pattern recognition because it spans numerous applications, such as access control, surveillance, security, credit-card verification, and criminal identification. In this paper, we propose a simple descriptor called an ECSP(Extended Center-Symmetric Pattern) for illumination-robust face recognition. The ECSP operator encodes the texture information of a local face region by emphasizing diagonal components of a previous CS-LBP(Center-Symmetric Local Binary Pattern). Here, the diagonal components are emphasized because facial textures along the diagonal direction contain much more information than those of other directions. The facial texture information of the ECSP operator is then used as the input image of an image covariance-based feature extraction algorithm such as 2D-PCA(Two-Dimensional Principal Component Analysis). Performance evaluation of the proposed approach was carried out using various binary pattern operators and recognition algorithms on the Yale B database. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed approach achieved better recognition accuracy than other approaches, and we confirmed that the proposed approach is effective against illumination variation.
This paper is concerned with modeling of a ductile fracture criterion for sheet metal considering anisotropy to predict the sudden fracture of advanced high strength steel (AHSS) sheets during complicated forming processes. The Lou−Huh ductile fracture criterion is modified using the Hill’s 48 anisotropic plastic potential instead of the von Mises isotropic plastic potential to take account of the influence of anisotropy on the equivalent plastic strain at the onset of fracture. To determine the coefficients of the model proposed, a two dimensional digital image correlation (2D-DIC) method is utilized to measure the strain histories on the surface of three different types of specimens during deformation. For the derivation of an anisotropic ductile fracture model, principal stresses (𝜎1,𝜎2, 𝜎3) are expressed in terms of the stress triaxiality, the Lode parameter, and the equivalent stress (𝜂𝐻, 𝐿,) based on the Hill’s 48 anisotropic plastic potential. The proposed anisotropic ductile fracture criterion was quantitatively evaluated according to various directions of the maximum principal stress. Fracture forming limit diagrams were also constructed to evaluate the forming limit in sheet metal forming of AHSS sheets over a wide range of loading conditions.

The method of photoelasticity allows one to obtain principal stress differences and principal stress directions in a photoelastic model. In the classical approach, the photoelastic parameters are measured manually point by point. This is time consuming and requires skill in the identification and measurement of photoelastic data. Fringe phase shifting method has been recently developed and widely used to measure and analyze fringe data in photo-mechanics. This paper presents the test results of photoelastic fringe phase shifting method for the stress analysis of a curved beam plate. The technique used here requires four phase stepped photoelastic images obtained from a circular polariscope by rotating the analyzer at 0˚, 45˚, 90˚ and 135˚. Experimental results are compared with those of ANSYS and calculated by the simple beam theory. Good agreement among the results can be observed.
In this study, stress difference between isotropic and transversely isotropic rock mass, and planar principal stresses at the periphery of the tunnel in the rock with various ratio of anisotropy were determined theoretically. Stress differences between isotropic and anisotropic calculations at crown. side walls and floor of a tunnel with assumed stress states were analyzed and compare each other by $FLAC^{2D}$, a finite differential element method. As a result, magnitude and direction of principal stresses in the case of ignoring anisotropy were different from those of anisotropic cases, whatever the stress state was. Stress difference increased as the ratio of anisotropy increased. Direction or anisotropy affected stress difference, especially in the cases of anisotropic directions of $45^{\circ}\;and\;135^{\circ}$ of counterclockwise from x direction.
The fracture toughness of two species, Pinus rigida MILL and Pinus koraiensis S. et Z. grown in Korea, was investigated by means of single edge notch beam specimen for the six principal systems of crack propagation in wood. The values of the fracture toughness for the LR and the LT systems ($K_{IC}$LR and $K_{IC}$LT) were found to be similar to each other and about 8 times greater than those for the other systems ($K_{IC}$RL, $K_{IC}$TL and $K_{IC}$TR) in both species. The results indicate that the characteristics of fracture toughness in three principal directions of wood (L, R, T direction) are quite different from those of bending strength for the responsible direction. To predict $K_{IC}$ value based on the variation of specific gravity, the experimental values of $K_{IC}$LT and $K_{IC}$TL were compared to the predicted values by published relationship between $K_{IC}$ and specific gravity. However, there were 10 to 25% differences between the former and the latter.
