  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of mothers education attainment on prevalence of dental caries among their preschool children. Methods: Data were obtained from the third 2006 Korea National Oral Health Survey. A total of 515 preschool children aged 2 to 7 years and their mothers were selected in this study. We used mother's education level as her socioeconomic position and controlled children's tooth brushing frequency, tooth brushing before bed, the frequency of eating snack, and the preventive dental visit. Whether children experienced dental caries or not and the number of decayed or filled or missing tooth surface they had were used as outcome variables. Results: The proportion of children affected with dental caries was 46.21%. The mother's education level affected children's caries significantly (p<0.05) and children whose mother attended less than high school had more possibility of having caries than children whose mother graduated from college or more (p<0.05). This effect was still significant and got larger(p<0.05), even after controlling children's dental health behavior. Conclusion: This study showed that mother's education level affected the prevalence of caries among their preschool children. In addition, this result indicated a need for more definite policy for children's dental health in lower socioeconomic class with general dental education.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep quality and periodontal disease-related symptoms among Korean adolescents. Methods: This cross-sectional study was based on the 16th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey (2020). A complex sample logistic regression was performed to identify the relationship between sleep quality and periodontal disease-related symptoms after adjusting for all covariates. Results: In model II, to estimate the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) for all covariates, students who answered "not at all sufficient", indicating sleep quality, were at higher risk of experiencing periodontal disease-related symptoms than those who answered "completely sufficient" (AOR=1.58). As a result of subgroup analysis, for estimating the AOR adjusted for all covariates in boys, students who answered "not at all sufficient", indicating sleep quality, were at a higher risk of experiencing periodontal disease-related symptoms than those who answered "completely sufficient" (AOR=1.68). In girls, students who answered "not at all sufficient", indicating sleep quality, were at a higher risk of experiencing periodontal disease-related symptoms than those who answered "completely sufficient" (AOR=1.43). Conclusions: It is necessary to formulate health policies that can promote optimal sleeping habits and oral health behaviors among Korean adolescents.

  • Objectives : Arsenic (As) is ubiquitously distributed in the environment and has been known as a human carcinogen. The main source of arsenic exposure in general population is an oral route through As-contaminated water and foods. This study was performed to estimate the daily intake of As from diet and associated factors in Korean adults. Methods : We investigated 590 adults, 249 males and 341 females, with age of 20 years and older, who had not been exposed to the As occupationally. Study subjects were interviewed for demographic characteristics, lifestyles and diets during the last 24 hours. The estimation of As intake daily was based on amount of food consumption and As concentration in each food by using database of As concentrations in 117 food species. Results : Daily As intake was estimated as $56.46\;{\mu}g$/day, $56.60\;{\mu}g$/day in male and $56.36\;{\mu}g$/day in female. As intake was not significant from sex, age group, smoking and alcoholic habits, while was by occupation with the most intake of As in fishery. The daily As intakes was positively correlated with the total food consumption, specifically related with fishes and shellfishes, seaweeds, oils, grains and flavors. About 75% of As intake from diet was contributed by seafoods, such as $32.07\;{\mu}g$/day from fishes & shellfishes and $10.05\;{\mu}g$/day from seaweeds. However, it is necessary to evaluate if the dietary As intake affects on the levels of As in the body. Conclusions : The amount of As intake daily in Korean adults was estimated as $56.46\;{\mu}g$/day, and is determined mainly by diet behavior. The seafoods, such as fishes & shellfishes and seaweeds, is major source of As exposure from diet in Korean.

  • Assessment of perceptions of the community, the determinants and development of their behavior regarding common malignancies, helps in establishing evidence-based activities for prevention and early diagnosis of cancer. However information on this important aspect is lacking in our country. Qualitative methods were here used to obtain information through in depth interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with all categories of identified stakeholders. Most were unaware of the activities of the cancer control program. Even the providers were not fully conversant. All respondents mentioned lack of diagnostic and treatment facilities in government, primary and secondary level facilities. Perceptions of different categories of stakeholders regarding why many community members did not attend screening camps and other services reflect the determinants of community behavior, acting independently as well as in combination. The cancer control program was thought to be restricted only to some private facilities and overcrowded government tertiary care facilities where the visits were time consuming. Almost all the facilities were considered curative oriented. Issues of supervision, monitoring and feedback were inadequately addressed by providers who were inadequately trained in many program activities. The program lacked effective planning, coordination and appropriate implementation at the grass roots level in Delhi. Social mobilization was grossly inadequate, as most of the community members were unaware of the existence of the program. Misconceptions about the risk factors, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment were common amongst community members as well as many of the providers. Thus the national cancer control program in our country needs further community participation and social mobilization. Accessibility, availability, acceptability and affordability of various preventive, curative and rehabilitative activities, as well as intersectoral coordination, training, supervision and monitoring of program activities, all need to be addressed to ensure the success of this important public health program.

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to investigate the frequent diseases among the people who had been treated by collaborative treatment of Korean medicine and Western medicine, and to compare their medical use behaviors before and after the collaborative first-stage pilot project between Korean medicine and Western medicine. Methods : 4,467 patients were identified as the patients who are participated in the collaborative first-stage pilot project between Korean medicine and Western medicine during the period between July 15, 2016 and March 31 2017. We used 28,480 records of Korean national health insurance claim data from January 1 2016 to March 31 2017 to analyzed present condition of cooperative medical usage. Also we conducted a paired t test to compare the percentage of collaborative treatment days before and after the pilot project period. Results : We found that the most frequent diseases treated in the pilot project were the diseases of musculoskeletal and nervous system and then 10 major diseases such as H, K, J, C (D), N, L, E, A, H and F disease codes in order. Also it was confirmed that 14 major and 53 medium diseases are included from more than 90% of total patients. As a result of high frequency of medical treatment in Western medicine or Korean medicine is "administration of Korean medicine", which is same as before and within the pilot project. The ratio of utilizing both Western and Korean medical care for the same disease on the same day by both general patients and patients in KCD-7 disease code group C, G, I, M and S had been increased significantly. Conclusions : The pilot project might change the behavior of utilizing the medical care service by increasing the ratio of collaborative treatment of Western medicine and Korean medicine for the same disease on the same day.
